This is freaking good. If you don't really sure whether to try it or not, I would suggest giving the manhwa a go first. The manhwa is called "Magic Emperor". If you like the manhwa, then you gonna love the novel as it gives you more enjoyment and a lot of content. I love the MC attitude and the way he present himself. He's arrogant, cunning and he sure as hell know how to troll his enemy to death.

Just to preface this review, I just want to say; if you're looking for content like "Harem", "Overpowered Protagonist" or "Evil Protagonist"; you will not see it in this novel.

Throughout reading this novel, you will come to see that the protagonist is NOT the strongest character in this world. There are many other people who are stronger than him even though he was reborn and "conveniently" gained many powers. The novel actively shows you that there are other beings, creatures, people, and groups that are stronger than him, however; what... more>> he lacks in strength, he makes up for in schemes and trickery.

The main character actively schemes throughout the story, challenging the so-called "smartest" sages in the story and winning against them with his plans. He punches up against those above him and kicks back down those beneath him, which is usually overconfident people that think they're stronger than him.

The reason my rating wasn't completely perfect is simply because I find the whole "randomly getting OP powers" very cliché when it comes to "Overpowered Novel" tropes, which isn't what the novel is about. Of course, I view it in a certain way of being lucky; because there will always be a universe where somebody just randomly stumbles upon OP powers, ESPECIALLY when they are the main character of the story. Even then, I still can't excuse the plot blatantly buffing the main character just so he can keep up with the strength of his enemies.

I also find the pacing somewhat unusual, with the start being very slow-paced (which is normal for this novel) and taking its time to completely develop the story so that during the climax it will pay off. But near the end, it slowly becomes a little rushed, especially compared to the previous pacing of the story.

Spoiler

I would also just like to say, for the people complaining that the main character isn't really a "Demonic Cultivator", you are absolutely correct. Halfway through the novel, a subplot develop about Zhuo Fan (the protagonist) using his second chance at life to rewrite/stray from his demonic path to become closer to the Dao; because how can you become completely emotionless/demonic, if you don't know what emotion is?

[collapse]

Overall, for my first novel; it's pretty creative with the concepts it introduces and I find it very fascinating. Hell, I even made an account just to leave a review. I DO NOT recommend this novel because it is SO GOOD that once you run out of chapters to read, you will feel a sense of emptiness and boredom. <<less

The MC is a demonic cultivator at a high cultivation level : apparently one level from the Saint level. He discovers and starts studying a demonic inheritance that will let him advance to Saint maybe beyond, but is betrayed by his disciple, and attacked by a group of hypocritical righteous cultivators who want the inheritance for themselves. Rather than let them take it, he destroys it and himself. Using a technique from the insurance, he takes over the body of a young servant in a decimated clan on the brink... more>> of bloodline extinction, and finds that he is unable to abandon the obsession of the servant, which is to protect and serve the clan.

So far the story has focused on the MC quickly leveling up using the demonic inheritance and using his scheming and extensive knowledge of alchemy, arrays, and cultivation to protect and advance his clan.

In terms of strengths of the novel, there's nothing much to rave about : the writing is acceptable, and the MC knows a lot and is good at scheming. It's ok as a time killer, but there's no serious originality to the novel that stands out or that really mitigate the weaknesses.

In terms of weaknesses, I see several :

- the MC openly flaunts his knowledge to manipulate much more powerful clans into becoming supporters of his clan. Given the amount of backstabbing and selfishness exhibited by these clans, and the general might makes right approach of the world in which the novel is set, this is unrealistic. Those clans would simply compel him to give them all his knowledge on pain of death. This obvious point never seems to be considered or addressed by the author.

- the MC is supposedly a world class demonic cultivator who rose to the top through his scheming and planning, but is constantly being surprised and out schemed in fights. Something as simple as someone wearing armor under their clothes has broken his schemes, left him unable to react on the spot, and most unacceptable of all, made him give up hope and accept that he lost. This is inconsistent with the way the author consistently characterizes demonic cultivators as the most dangerous because they put their all into a fight and are willing to do whatever it takes to win. He gives up on his life way too easily. This has happened several times so far, and is always solved by someone popping out of the woodwork to save him.

- the MC is unbelievably dense when it comes to women showing attraction to him. Somehow he's a master of reading peoples' intentions in all situations but romantic ones, where he becomes a fool. This is played for laughs, but the uneven characterization is more annoying than it is humorous.

- the side characters are flat. Not much to say here : they have surface level motivations and are dumb when convenient, smart when the MC needs to be almost killed, and otherwise blend into the background. Especially the many women who crush on the MC, who once they are introduced, quickly lose all sense of individuality and become part of the undifferentiated and interchangeable mass of females yearning after the MC.

- the world building is nonexistent. The MC goes places and does things, but the scale and geography and description of wondrous portions of the world are all missing. <<less

Usually I dont do reviews cause im too lazy, but seeing the low rating on this novel and the comments it got I had to do a review to make things fair.

This novel is not a masterpiece alright? Its a really great novel nontheless, we got our reincarnated demon emperor who plays his part most of the time, and also something that I really liked was that he slowly changes from a demonic emperor to a more "human" belieable character with emotions, he started caring for the luo siblings (the... more>> clan that needs to survive) and a lot of other seconary characters.

The guy who commented why matters being a demonic emperor when he's clearly a s*ave. This guy clearly didnt read past chapter 3, he's not the s*ave of anyone. As he reincarnated in a body that was not his, he had to make the "master" of his previous body survive, and that's all. He commands all the respect, and its basically the head of the clan in the novel. Everyone laughts it off cause he's a steward but everyone knows that if he wanted he could be the head of the clan.

So while there are clearly things that may bother most people, like useless secondary characters/love interests. Plot armor and whatnot. I must say that this is a clearly above-average cultivation story. The MC is clearly an arrogant ass and a believable character. Also the interactions he has with his enemies are funny af

If you're looking for something like Fang Yuan from reverend insanity, this may or may not be what you look for. Cause he's evil but only to his enemies while also tend to become a litle too atached to the people he cares about. Personally I like this kind of character cause he's not a machine but others may not feel the same.

All in all I consider this to be quite good, it has the same problems that your average cultivation novels has, but with the bonus of the clearly better interactions with characters and also some of the characters dont feel as bland as in other novels. Plus zhou fan is a badass, just read it <<less

The usual cultivation novel, but with the main character being reincarnated as a servant. OP protagonist slowly gaining power while killing those above his rank, but as a servant raising his clan to glory. He ignores women though, which is a bit annoying.

My expectation was already low but what a surprise the quality is even lower. MC is a devil cultivator but author still tried to paint him in limelight somehow and justified his kills with random shit. Whenever he kills "he is a born devil cultivator' but whenever with girl "but you will know he is trustworthy" when this mf blantanly lie so many think. Girls droped onto him left and right by just a slight interation, and with him scolding or cursing her to boot.

P/S: I don't usually do cringe... more>> woke stuff but holy this novel is sexist as hell. <<less

This is a story about a 7 year old ADHD boy who was born two decades ago and still thinks flipping the middle finger at folks is still cool. Lol. I guess I got into this novel not knowing it's basically a parody. But I guess I'm still reading it, though the guy acts like an 11 year old who just discovered his p**is at some points, at least he doesn't do it all the time like most harem novels, which barely makes this a good read. Only difference from... more>> this novel and most harem novels is that the guy constantly has meets with unimaginable beauties at every turn of his feet, but he's basically a void of feelings and cares nothing about them, but the author keeps throwing him more and more as the story goes along. So expect every arc he teams up with a new beauty who will fall in love with him, sometimes they even get so obsessed and annoying they will be kept around for ages, making you wish the protagonist would just randomly flick his sleeve and kill them off. <<less

I like this story, got exactly what I wanted from the genre. To be honest the bar is not too high because there is so many novels where the enemy of MC is a completely s*upid young master with hurt pride because of no reason, that any novel in the genre where the characters are remotely human like with individual thinking proces is a blessing.

And I also love a good power fantasy 🤌

This novel is quite interesting, and overall, it's a read I very much recommend if you're interested in xianxia and cultivation. Let me explain why.

There are several reasons as to why I recommend this novel, and the first is it's MC. There are definitely moments in where he comes off as hypocritical or a do-gooder, despite being a supposed "demonic emperor", but he is written extraordinarily well when it comes to Chinese cultivation novels. The novel does intrigue very well, and that's where the Zhuo Fan comes in as a... more>> smart character. He makes level-headed and cunning decisions in relation to the narrative, and while he may not come off as a 1000 year old emperor at times, it is apparent that he knows when to back off and lower his head when he needs to, despite having unbridled arrogance. It's the person that stands last that wins, and he encapsulates that saying a lot. It's not a hot-blooded, never losing sort of character, that most readers look to in these sorts of novels, but one that comes off as actually cunning.

There are many twists and turns in the plot that you really wouldn't expect coming from a poorly translated CN novel, and I found them delightful.

The second reason has to do with the above. While the narrative and prose - which are likely lost in translation - leave much to be desired, the author writes political intrigue extremely well. If you can glance past the poorly done cultivation parts, the world is there for you to immerse yourself in. The world, at least as of Chapter 187, is capable of capturing my interest and makes me wonder as to how things will end up. If I had to sum it up, the world doesn't revolve around the main character, like it does in the vast majority of media. It's the story that revolves around the main character, not the world. Each faction has their own goals and plots that tie into each other's with their different relationships, and it's interesting to see how it turns out.

While this novel is interesting and a good read, it's nothing amazing though. I would still recommend it, so yeah.

Edit: Came back to lower my rating a bit because of the almost unbelievably cliche cultivation parts and scenes. It's so bad I was forced to come back and do this. <<less

A decent read.

In a nut shell - stereotypical xuanhuan with an emphasis on schemes. The plot and twists are no where near the level of Reverend Insanity, but the MC is still somewhat refreshing from the typical hot blooded protagonist. There is a romance tag but its not very well written with 1.5 dimensional females and an uninspiring list of simps after the dense MC. The female lead will have a personality change where she goes from cold and aloof to naive and gullible which seems just lazy writing. The... more>> story has 90% of the chapters in the lower domain which also shows the poor pacing of the novel and a rushed ending.

Still, I would rate this novel 3.5/5. The MC is charismatic and the plot somewhat coherent but it doesn't have any standout hooks over say Meng Hao (ISSTH) 's money grubbing personality and brilliant side cast or Fang Yuan (RI) 's brilliant mind and amazing Gu system world building. I would definitely read the manhua first and if it appeals to you, then go for the novel. <<less

I read this novel after reading the manhua. It had huge potential as the MC keep on out-smarting all known evil-doers (schemers). At first it was interesting even till now the Manhua is great going but reading the advance novel chapters it turned out to be quite ordinary at later stage.

**Spoiler Alert**

Here I am going to give some spoilers for later chapters which I did not like or to be precise I felt it was riddled with plot holes and my insights into it

Spoiler

First If you follow manhua then you already know the basics of the Yuwen empire. There are three 3 schemers at the beginning 1. 7th elder of Hell valley 2. Leng of Reagent estate 3. Zhuge the prime minister

After the beginning of the story the 7th elder of hell valley fell victim to the MC (Zhou Fan) and started true journey towards the greatest Housekeeper afterwards as he was noticed by various factions in the novel (story) / Manhua. ---- this was great start to show how powerful MC is as well as his past life knowledge and shrewd brain. I don't know others but I do like this kind of plot and getting kind heart lass Ning'er too

Then battle with Reagent estate at Drifting flower city and beating them there along with other power was quite satisfying. The climax to this arc came when He subdued Yan Song (vicious Pill king) and then Li.... (something -forgot the name) the outer elder of the reagent estate ---- this arc was very good with few love bits with Chu Qingcheng

----then time leap ---- 5 yrs --- mean while he get to know the Gu santong (baby Qilin) which later help him

Next arc was the battle in the Beast mountain and here The housekeeper of reagent estate (Leng) plays very vicious role along with Qingtian almost got the girl Ning'er (though she died to make MC go mad). This arc you will feel MC being slightly soft heart and did some irrational things ---- but My observation it was well calculated as he gained more than he lost here though at the end of the arc he became cold heart vicious MC we know

---- True growth period of Luo clan came ---- as they became the 8th greatest clan at the end of the arc

Then some BS thing happened and you will find the Emperor to be quite formidable thinker and schemer. This is the arc where down fall of the story started. If emperor was so much formidable he would not have been pushed around too much but later they show so much resource and man power with the emperor that you will find it unreasonable that he hardly ever used it.

a) Emperor was able to use Gu Santong against MC (though MC stole the thunder as Emperor did not know connection between MC and Gu Santong) ----then question is why never used him before as he was hell lot of powerful

b) Emperor had two elders (divine dragons) around Zhuge (prime minister) they are Yin-Yang elders with mask beside Zhuge but he never tried to collect evidence against only to use them after Zhuge revolted with quanrong people

c) Emperor had a deal with Quanrong people too --- why make a troublesome deal while you could simply deal with them as they can not threaten Yuwen empire as there are three supreme sects that protect it from land change. This was again became the downfall of emperor as the deal crossed the bottom line of the sects

d) Emperor killed the most loyal Dugu zhantian (the wad god and one of the pillar) due to some kind of misguided plot as Zhuge fell and no great house hold remained so he thought to kill him (part of the deal with Quanrong people) ---- as I find this to be too much BullSh*t why? --- first, Dugu Marshall was loyal and he was fighting quanrong for the empire. Second, he broke his ties with Luo for the empire. Third, why make deal with quanrong while you could simply destroy the Zhuge with the two beside him and still use Dugu to fight quanrong and if he died its okay but why plot against some one who is hardly part of court politics

e) Emperor tried to create chaos in the empire itself for some selfish reason yet pretended to be a benevolent king --- really kill your subjects who did you no harm and leave the one's that tried to go for your head --- this emperor was too much of an idiot

This killed the mood and many bullsh*t popped out by this arc too like MC not progressing in cultivation even if years pass by while others go like rocket while MC says he is doing this for foundation --- 500 chapters yet still profound heaven level cultivation but could fight 2 level higher (etheral level) 0000 what about the past memories forgot to use them MC ???. Luo clan became his burden but still okay as the story makes him the greatest housekeeper but why the masters of the household so lousy not doing enough even after 10 years of real world experience (MC mostly vanished during earlier days)

Author keep on introducing love angle then throws it away after some time. Please fix your mind whether you want love angle or not --- So many potential love interest, some chapters wasted on their relation building (mostly MC trying to deceive them) but still after some time these girl get someone else (Dandan of Drifting flower example, Ning'er doubtful, Chu Qingcheng was used by MC then again became love potential)

Story became too much political and the world remained practically the same at the start of the story to the end (500 ch of my reading). Growth in the story was highly neglected (personal opinion)
