Lin Jie is the owner of a bookstore in another world.

He’s kind and warm-hearted, often recommending healing books to customers who are going through a tough time. From time to time, he secretly promotes his own work too.

Over time, these customers begin to respect him greatly, some even frequently bringing local specialties to repay his favor. They often seek his professional opinion when it comes to selecting books, and share their experiences with this ordinary bookstore owner to people around them.

They respectfully and intimately refer to him using names such as the “Demon God’s Lackey”, “Propagator of the Flesh and Blood Gospel”, “ ‘Corpse Devouring Sect’s Rites and Customs’ Author” and “Shepherd of the Stars”.

The world building and characters in this novel is great! Every characters and their roles introduced are oftentimes significant and interesting. I've always loved it when a book incorporate the caste system and uses it effectively.

The author commit foreshadowing excellently. The end point of every plot turns may not shock the readers, but it will still gives one an unexpected feeling of sorta not knowing how it got there. Although, the ending feels a bit—just a tiny bit—rushed, it is still ended perfectly and within expectations in my opinion.

I picked up this novel due to the title and after reading this, I just feel like there's no more perfect title than this lol I wouldn't mind another book on Boss Lin as the ending is quite open.

Finally, the brain tonic used in this book can probably drown everyone in the world. There are times where my suspension of disbelief couldn't hold on. Still funny though. <<less

Man this is entertaining, it's well written, has great characters and an interesting world.

I love the MC and his uniqueness, although the disconnect between his understaning of things and everyone else's might potentially get old after a while.

I would give 4.5 stars right now, and I think it will keep the quality all the way to the end.

... more>> I want more.

Edit: It did get old after a while, I'll take it down to 4 stars.

It seems like nothing can go wrong, and I'm not very excited about the current "arc".

Also (spoilers for where I'm at)
Spoiler

What happened to the sister of Muen's assistant? Did she just die by having her brain exploited for the tower? Did the author forget? I cared about that, and it hasn't been mentioned in far too long even though the culprit has been "defeated".

It is an interesting story, often reminds me of Lord of the Mysteries albeit toned down in the plot aspect. Reading this was a pleasure, but there are some lackluster qualities that mainly revolves around the fact that it is in a comedy undertone.

Being that this is a misunderstanding trope type of story, you're likely to find more absurdities in the entire scheme of the plot, where characters interact as if they are walking in eggshells whenever MC-kun is related to the scenario, to lucky deus ex machina that continues... more>> to plague this fairly light story.

Although I did find this entertaining, I do think there are things that could have been done better. <<less

I've decided to write a review to dissuade readers from the negative reviews. This novel starts as a "misunderstanding" based novel similar to popular ones like "To Be A Power in the Shadows". But it goes so much further than that. That's because this world feels alive.

The world building is spectacular, and each of the warring/friendly factions is interesting to observe. This is the clear thing that drew me into this novel. It's clear that this author isn't just focused on cheap gratification and has actually spent time to build... more>> out a world and setting, along with the characters that inhibit it.

On that note, let's talk about the characters, as each of them is individualistic and worth remembering. Key characters play amazing roles and have their own ambitions, as their lives get intertwined with MC's.

And the best part is that this story blends the parts without the MC, along with the mystery and intrigue of the MC himself, to present an enjoyable read to readers.

Overall, the best CN novel I've read haha. <<less

The story doesn't really go anywhere, but it's more of a slice of life novel anyway. I enjoy it a lot, and it makes for very easy reading. It's not some great epic, or amazing story though. It's very character focused rather than plot focused, which is nice, as the plot is definitely the weak point of this story.

Give it a read, but don't expect it to be great, and it won't disappoint you.

Always have liked the “misunderstanding” type novels (not referring to harem) and this novel does does it extremely well. It is one of the best wn I’ve read. To top it off, Hosted Novel’s translations are always very good and easy to read.

For now it seems to be a fun little story, you just have to accept that the MC is a bit dense and very motivated to live an easy life without too much thought haha He is a bit of a weirdo, but not a bad person. And he is still completely oblivious to anything supernatural going on as of now (besides the existence of the entity that transmigrated him and the bookstore), while others already start calling him a God. The side characters carry the action, but they are... more>> not that deep yet, but I'm still interested how that will develop. The comedy is light hearted, just don't think too much.

But the translation is good, so thanks! <<less

I was surprised when I saw this novel pop up in my search and thought, what on the hills!! Didn't I just bypass you right now? Then I found that they are two different novels but amazingly similar. Too d*mn similar, ... more>>
Spoiler

the novel title (just 2 words different in English and 3 in chinese but if you look at the meaning of the original names they are actually one word apart) , the shop goods, MC personality, the way he interacts with the others and even his first customer was a female (female hunter).

Also for someone who was just betrayed by her comrades, isn't she a little too comfortable with this stranger she just met? She even dared to drink the tea he gave her.

[collapse]

I shouldn't be surprised as I have seen many writers that have a unique definition of the word "inspiration". Just don't know who inspired who, the other one doesn't have a release year in its NU page.

I'll stick to this one a little to see if there is any difference between the two

It's the usual OP shop owner trope.

This time he's selling books and misunderstanding his clients (and powers) in a dark-fantasy mid-late XIX century world, good translation that flows pretty well and some interesting conflict between side characters early on so it feels promising, the comedy it's not really that funny but it isn't a boring read either.

Compared to other similar works (like Black Tech or Gourmet of Another World) it seems like it will have similar strong points in the world building, side stories and character design but what has... more>> been shown of the MC so far makes me think that maybe for once the MC will not be a total block of wood that drags the story down.

It's pretty early to rate and since it is a chinese novel it might be necessary to wait for 100 or 200 chapters to be translated to get a real feel of the story but for once I want to trust my gut and say 4 stars. <<less

This novel puts a lot of focus on the customers of mc's bookstore. It does a good job at giving us an idea of the powers that are residing in the city where the MC lives. Through these people and their stories we get to know more about the world. That is not to say that the MC doesn't get his own moments.

I have little to say about the misunderstandings, they aren't that funny but they aren't bad either. I do have something to say about the horror though. It... more>> isn't the kind of scary horror that makes you unnerved like in My House of Horrors or Plague Doctor. Rather it is more supernatural than horror.

I think that a major flaw in this novel is that the author doesn't know how to write better characters. They all, including the MC, feel kind of flat. However this is still an interesting novel.

The author wrote a Q&A after the end of volume 1 and therein he stated that:
Spoiler

the misunderstandings are a core component of the story and that he doesn't intend to change it anytime soon. There will also be a main female lead so romance might come into play later.

It's a fun read.

The clueless bookstore clerk transmigrator handing mundane books to otherworlders... who grasp arcane tomes of mind-rending powers from still oblivious clerk.

It's a nice read througout, although the last 100 chapters or so turn more gory when MC slowly realizes his influence on the world. Ending isn't fully exhaustive either.

... more>> Still, although genre composition fluctuates which might dissatisfy people, pacing is excellent, never dragging the plot needlesly to pad the content, and generally not shortening the sub-plots too much.

It could really use a few bonus chapters to properly revisit all the secondary protagonists. <<less

Nice novel. There are parts I am wondering what is happening or even if necessary but the reveal at the end and the explanation clears a lot of things. I am surprised people calling the ending rushed. It was actually great. It explains everything, and ties up the story nicely.

The last scene is one of those things that it is left as a nice little touch for the readers. I don't think if it is intended to be used for part 2.

There is not a lot of webnovel masterpieces but this one clearly is one of them. The story is always funny and interesting, the ending was masterfully written, I've got no complain about it and it might be the first time in all the reviews that I have done with a finished novel.

The story is amazing... Until the last 50 or so chapters.

Then the plot has become extremely rushed. For some comparison imagine if all the events in the first 350-400 chapters being compressed into 50 chapters. That's the amount of content and plot devvelopment that happened in the last chapters. Very rushed and the ending is almost not satisfying. Which was disappointing.

Also some plot points were dropped.

Due to that I can't give it 5, but 4 but only due to those amazing first 350 chapters.

Easily one of the best novels on this website.

It's crazy because this is a misunderstanding comedy, yet the characters and setting (lore/universe/worldbuilding) feel so f*cking real and alive. It's really just so well written. Everything feels incredibly well thought out, as if you are jumping into an established universe already.

And I personally love misunderstandings anyway, so to combine it with such great writing is amazing. Such a good series.

Even if you don't like misunderstandings, this is worth reading just for the worldbuilding/mystery aspect. It's really so cool.

Protagonist is transmigrated to another world that appears similar to 80s-90s earth with some slight differences and spends a few years just running his bookshop without meeting anything else supernatural. He is a kind person who only wants to sell books and gives life advice as a hobby.

He occasionally has customers, who after sweet talking them with vague fortune teller style life tips, he sells them books that to him appear to be books from our planet but to the customer are eldritch tomes of OPness. The entity behind the... more>> bookshop makes him not know this.

The customers misunderstand his vague life tips to be mysterious omniscient powers due to them not believing he could just be a normal person as he has tomes of such power and is so easily giving them away. And the tomes are always useful to the person to seal the impression.

As of around chapter 200 he is aware of the supernatural in the world but is still ignorant of his customers being supernatural themselves. He interprets things in the most positive light when he hears about them.

He has gained a very high level power due to a lucky gift from a customer, and his own kind personality, and as such doesn't consider any of the supernatural events he has been involved with to be as impressive as they actually are. <<less

I'm really enjoying this novel! I binge-read the entire thing until I caught up and then carried on reading it with every release. I love the element of mystery that comes with the bookshop. The worldbuilding is amazing and every single character is so unique and fleshed out.
