One day, I – a high schooler – found a paperback in the hospital. The “Disease Coexistence Journal” was its title. It was a diary that my classmate, Sakura Yamauchi, had written in secret. Inside, it was written that due to her pancreatic disease, her days were numbered. And thus, I coincidentally went from Just-a-Classmate to a Secret-Knowing-Classmate. It was as if I were being drawn to her, who was my polar opposite. However, the world presented the girl that was already suffering from an illness with an equally cruel reality…

Don't be fooled by the ambiguous title, just read the 1st chapter (not prologue) before you decide on anything else.

I just read till the lastest TLed chapter in one go and I'm still feeling it... Moved, stirred, as though my heart has been lured in by the fragrance of a hook the novel threw. The throbbing that aches from being caught on the hook yet irresistibly so.

Hats off to the translator for working on such a deep and intricate novel, I'm sure it was hard work to bring forth the... more>> subtle feelings between the lines. It also makes me want to read the novel in Japanese to get a feel of how the conversations actually flowed...

Spoiler

Not recommended for those who want to stay faint-hearted.

Alas, the prologue spoilt some of the enjoyment of the story for me. I would strongly advise against reading chapter 0 unless you want to know how it ends (though I haven't read till the last chapter).

I can't recommend this novel enough. It's an incredibly moving tale of a boy who has no care for those around him meeting a girl whose life revolves around interactions with other people. The chapters are slow but highlight the details in every one of their interactions, and those small details are what makes reading the novel such a breathtaking experience. Every word in the novel is meaningful and every sentence said by the two lovely characters contribute to the beauty of the plot. The ending is pre-determined because of... more>> the girl's illness, but the way the author (and the amazing translator) executes it sends a rush of emotions into my heart every time I re-read it. I wouldn't say that it's a sad ending, though, so I would still recommend this novel to those who shy away from sad stories. It's truly a wonderful read that will influence future readers to re-evaluate their perceptions on life and what it means to live. <<less

Literally made an account to rate this. Really loved this novel. Very good storytelling, told through the thoughts of one side and action of both. Brings a lot of life to the characters. Slow and sweet, words cant describe how much I enjoyed it, thx for the ride author.

From the very beginning of the novel we are made aware of what is going to happen. This is a pretty short romance that will most likely stir your emotions. If you have watched the movie, I still think you should read the novel. Although the movie does have some things that novel doesn't and some better parts, overall the quality of the novel is just a bit better, making it worth the read. All in all, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is a really good romance novel that... more>> you definitely should read. <<less

Note I read the official translated version.

Probably still my favorite story. I've read the LN, manga, and watched both movies (Live action and anime). I think I shed tears still everytime I read/watch any version. The blossoming friendship between the MCs and how it builds to a really raw emotional peak was very satisfying if not still sad.

There is an epilogue story that continued a bit in the future was good for some extra closure.

In all I'd recommend this in all mediums its available in. I think I'd rank them... more>> LN>Anime>Manga>Live-Action <<less

Stop! Please stop my tears. I was just sitting in the corner balling my eyes and freaking my mother out. They just wouldn't stop comingggg.

*sniffles* Anyhow, this book was fantastic with 10 chapters that were long. I really could put myself in the protagonist's shoes, especially his love for books. The thing that got me was the beautiful platonic relationship between the MC and the FL (?). Pure friendship between people of opposite genders need to be emphasized more! This marvelously displayed it.

In my humble opinion, this book did a... more>> beautiful job of portraying the feelings of the MC and how relatable he is.

The fact that he didn't go to her funeral was all the more perfect. It was him and it would have also been me in those circumstances.

At moments in the beginning I found the FL annoying to the point I didn't understand how he tolerated her, but there was beautiful character development that stole ma heart.

Finally, her

death was perfectly executed.

The author had a clear of vision of the theme for his novel and wrote it in, seamlessly emphasizing it. This couldn't have been better. I was shocked and upset and wanted to hurl my meal, but it was just the right thing for the novel. It was satisfying.

In the future, my metric for friendship is going to depend on how much I wanna eat their pancreas. <<less

I read the book in Japanese and definitely enjoyed it.

However, I did reference the translation here a few times while reading and noticed that the translation unfortunately does have errors particularly during conversation e.g. One example in c2: お洒落 has to do with being fashionable, not drowning in alcohol (the conversation is reshaped to fit the mistranslation).

Praise to the translator for making the novel more accessible to interested readers, but I'd recommend reading the official translation if possible.

It may be a short story of just 10 ch, but it took me more time to finish than a 100 ch story (since I was crying most the time and reading the same para again and again ah...).
I mostly avoid stories with tragedy setting coz I hate it since it makes my eyes puff every time but I also love it so so so much and this one is just umm... what we all call as masterpiece?
I would say the total story is perfect. It just doesn't... more>> bring in rebirth or parallel universe or any such extra fitting just to soothe the readers.
The ending can't be more perfect than this.
Of course what I really want is HE but I am sure even though it is not really a HE, I am happy that this the ending at the same time sad that this is the ending.
I know I am full of contradiction but u will also know what I am happy and what I am sad about once u read it.
Oh god... I am just not sure why such good books are not always popular.
I hope many will read this one (maybe just my selfish wish that many should cry like me reading this wonderful one or maybe I just want to share something I loved so much to everyone).
But friends I am sure reading this will bring u more memories, thoughts, happiness, etc etc etc
Last but not the least, my heartfelt thanks to the translator who translated such a wonderful work in the most amazing way with all the deeper thoughts conveyed even in the translated part.
And to the author I think u made what u want and what u wished for, I forever will love the characters and remember them (while I know when remembering I would be like a fool crying and smiling at the same time).
Anyway have a good day to everyone who read my.... idk what is that anyway thanks :) <<less

I actually saw the anime first (with my friends) and it was truly heartbreaking for me. I gave it 4/5 stars (4.5 actually) because:

  • I felt the plot progreasion was a bit rushed somehow, especially the scene surrounding her d*ath.
  • I feel like the author could've milked the plot more for gut-wrenching, tear-inducing scenes but it got abruptly cut off near the end because of the plot twist.
  • No one ever anticipated that plot twist, which was as equally as devastating and as brilliant.
  • It makes you really think what could've been if it didn't happen, which is phenomenal since the novel really teaches us how fleeting life could be and no one really knows when they're going to d*e.
  • Yes, the ending was inevitable and we all knew that it was coming. But the author worded the story in such a way that it's still heartbreaking, we're still emotionally attached, and that we're not ready to let go no matter how you guard your heart against it. It's as if we're actually watching a loved one (be it a friend, a family member, etc.) slowly lose their life before our very eyes.
Anyways, I still loved the anime (and by extension, the novel). It's that kind of novel or show that really makes you sit back and think about your life choices, y'know?

Wow. No words. This was gorgeous! Incredibly beautifully writing with a heart wrenching story. I don't cry easily when reading but I cried throughout the entire story. And the translation is truly top notch. What makes this such a masterpiece is the character development of the ML. How he slowly grows as a person and learns to be human. Honestly, I'm speechless after reading this.
