With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

First of all, I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone. Those who rated this novel so lowly didn't even reach at least chapter 300, especially with that particular long bad review. How dare you, you don't even know the main antagonist! People, you are missing the spice of this novel by dropping it so early. Patience is a virtue. I am glad that I stayed because honestly, this is one of the best chinese novel I've ever read! So, please give it a chance and read until the... more>> second volume.

Some people might think that the novel's slow pace and different POV's are boring, but I think otherwise. Rather, it gives us time to familiarize with both the characters and the world. The characters, specially, seems alive and not just mere characters. We can differentiate them just by their thoughts; they have strengths and weaknesses; they have their own personality, humors and social circle which is in my opinion, very difficult to do as an author. Furthermore, the description of their appearance was so intricate! I am simping with Amon all the time when I read the word monocle. Not to mention, character development. As for the world, it's very well depicted into words, it's beyond my capacity to explain and describe. It's just too vast and mysterious that it makes me feel like I'm in their world too. With that said, I would like to thank the translators for their wonderful work!

Overall, I just want to rant about those people who writes bad reviews but didn't even read the novel properly! Grrr. Please don't believe them.

Also, LoTM don't have romance. No harems! No simps! It may be biased, but I think this makes LoTM more better than other novels that focuses on romance too much. Though I do ship Amon and Klein ahehehe. <<less

This novel is absolutly amazing.

Pros

  • The characters. I really like nearly every character, almost all of them are fun and get sufficient character development. The main charcter is also great, he's intelligent, he's fun and he doesn't feel s*upidly overpowered. I also like that it actually matters that he is reincarnated.
  • The world. The world is mysterious, well built and the powers are also fun to read about. I also really like the lovecraftian elements.
  • The plot. Without going the extremly spoiler-y route I'll say that's it's very good. It's mysterious, has good twists and keeps you interested.
Cons

  • The ending. Yes, I know that there will be a sequel but c'mon, the ending wasn't good. It was abrupt and left a lot of things in the dark in a bad way.

My feelings towards lord of the mysteries are quite complicated.

On the one hand, the worldbuilding, lore and overall the complexity and realism of LoM's world is leagues above most if not all every other chinese webnovel I've ever read. Even without reading the novel, just looking at the wikia will give you an idea of how deep the world is.

Characters make reasonable decisions most of the time and there is rarely anything forced. No s*upidity common to most web novels.

On paper, this is the novel of my dreams that I... more>> should be praising to the heavens.

Yet, on the other hand... Even after 400 chapters, my feelings towards LoM are... kinda indifference? I just can't bring myself to care about any of the characters. Not even the protagonist. Whatever he does, it feels like it doesn't matter. No matter what happen, it feels like it doesn't matter. From a rational point of view, the characters are great; but I can't empathize with any of them.

If I had to use one word to describe my experience in reading LoM, it would be "soulless". The quality of the writing is high enough that I kept reading it and I can't easily pin point what is so wrong about it, but on the other hand, I never got excited when reading it or looking forward to the next chapter. Sometimes, I don't even read a chapter for several days; sometimes, I force myself to read 5 in a row thinking I might get engrossed. At this point, it's just when I have literally nothing else to do, I go read a chapter or two of LoM and that's all about it.

Part of why I'm so indifferent is that while, put nicely, the power system is deep and complicated, put badly, it's made in a way that the author can introduce any random new thing and it still makes "sense" by the power system. If the author needs the protagonist to be able to do X thing, he will just introduce a ritual that allow him to do that thing. What, that ritual was never mentioned! Idiot! The world is deep and the depth and mysteries know no end!

The interactions between different powers and items is also totally random and up to the whim of the author. Ultimately, if the author says "it works", then it works. If he says it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. It makes it hard as a reader to be engrossed into the battles or the power levels because it's all up to what the author (and the plot) needs.

The beyonders (ie : people with people) always seek to become stronger but no one know why they do so. It seems like a high risk high cost low reward matter.

The plot is, put nicely, deep and complicated. Put badly, it's kinda random and it's whatever the author say goes. Chapter 200 - 400 feel like a succession of "side stories" rather than a coherent whole. Which, don't get me wrong, is very realistic. For example:

Spoiler

Protagonist randomly accpet journalist task in protecting him when going to the slum. Then they randomly ask a guy to look for information on strange happening. That guy tells them girls have been kidnapped recently. Protagonist randomly decide to save them. That case randomly involve a lot of powerful people, so we spend 10+ chapters saving the girls. End of the mini arc; Next side quest please.

[collapse]

I'm exaggerating a bit but when I look back on the last 200 chapters I've been reading, it's really how the novel has been so far to me. Stuff happens, protagonist randomly sees it, randomly decides to take part in it, and then once it's done time for the next side quest. Even if those "mini-arc" are well written, I think I would appreciate bigger arcs more.

Most important point though is probably the MC relationship with other characters which make the whole thing so "soulless". MC is always in a disguise, and he doesn't form any true relationship with anyone. Any relationship he has with anyone is based on lies and deceit, and he cuts this relationship as soon as he can. The personality of the MC is also always the one from the disguise he currently has; so ultimately, who is the protagonist? <<less

I just want to ask. Is this only until 1430 chapters? No continuation whatsoever? Is this still ongoing? Hahahhaha

i hope for the next installment to come faster!!! Hhahah

this novel is so good. I was daunted by the 1400+ chapters but in a blink of an eye, I finished 30 chapters. The plot is amazing! This makes you think and analyze how the characters did what they did.

"Lord of the Mysteries" is undoubtedly one of the legendary novels beside "Release that Witch". What makes it most entertaining is it's unique cultivation system which unlike any light novel I have ever read. Beside the abilities of both protagonist and other characters are very amazing and unique. The story line is also extremely unique and portrays a vivid description. In short the novel is extremely descriptive and immersive. This novel is on a completely different level that it no longer can be called one of the best rather it... more>> is one of the legends. <<less

Easy 5 stars because it is just that good. I have long known that LotM is a good novel based on my experience of reading his other work, Throne of Magical Arcana, but this one is just next level. In my honest opinion, this novel is, if not the best, top 3 in my list.

The universe of LotM is so expansive and well-crafted that it does not come as a surprise that there will be 2 more books in the LotM universe. The lore, culture and portrayal of the different... more>> societies is also one aspect I like about the novel. Pacing can be slow at times but it is worth it, trust me. MC is likeable and his "lampooning" is one of my favorite things about him. The side characters and a few of the antagonists are also really interesting and well-developed. Words cannot fully describe how much I like this novel and I would just advise you to give it a try. The 4.7 rating on NU is justified, in my opinion. <<less

Overated novel. The plots are good, worls building is excellent. But the thing is, the story is dragged way too long and filled with too much information.

Let me make an example, the characters way of thinking are ridiculous. They could imagine all sort of mystical things from a small clue as a piece of paper. For instance, if the MC ever find a dog sitting by itselfnon the road, he will immediately think of the reason why its owner left it there. The reason could be that its owner... more>> is possessed by a ghost. And the devil ghost could be king of dogs, the Dog King. And then we will link the Dog King with a god existence to make a conclusion that this Dog King could be Jesus. And finally, he claims that Jesus's hidden identity is Budda.

This novel could be a master piece if this ridiculous type of "detective thinking" scene is reduced. <<less

Very well written and enjoyable read specially the lampooning and dry humor. The only problem is some parts are repetitive and I catch myself speed browsing through letters sometimes instead of reading intently as some parts will not matter anyway.

Will be waiting for part 2 and 3.

A quite good story roughly in the focus of 'weak to strong' and 'kingdom building'- but different.

Do note that although this is marked as 'completed', it is more 'abandoned at an ok stopping point'. For some reason the author posted a bunch of related shorts after, the last of which was definitely quit incomplete.

That aside, I googled and found a few Chinese originals of this, and google translated the author's notes. He posted 2 chapters of notes where he explains a bunch of stuff- but mostly his plans & intent... more>> to do a sequel. Well, that didn't happen yet- so...

'You are forewarned'...

Anyway- the review:

The Good:

  • Story is overall quite well-plotted, builds over time, and is composed of many characters with pretty good development. Not simply a 'get more power & stuff' grind (though that is there).
  • Worldbuilding- this is a different fantasy background from most stories, and the author's use of 'discovery' to piece together the (certainly planned in advance) details of the world and paths works fairly well.
  • Secrets- rarely do I see a story with 'secrets' that aren't 'I'll get to that later' bs or 'forced mystery just cause' nonsense. This is a pretty well-thought-out journey into discovery.
  • Author makes the thought process of the MC and situational developments frequently intelligent & occasionally clever.
  • Story covers a pretty wide range of situations and events- far from solely focusing on 'combat stages' and 'excuses for a battle with a guy'
The BAD:

  • I have more bad than good- that does not mean in any way that the story is not still great- it just does quite a bit of 'noticeable stuff'.
  • 'Convenient things are convenient'- MC is pretty plot armored, and stumbles into success/resolves things with 'just as I planned' way too much.
    Spoiler

The worst offender is the 'magical grey fog' which is the pivotal monkey wrench for solving too many 'problems'.

    [collapse]
  • Slightly too many characters- it's not unmanageable, but you likely won't remember everyone dragged back in/mentioned later.
  • Many people have an alias, a secret, belong to a different organization, or all of the above (x2 or x3 in a few cases). This can make for a LOT of details to follow.
  • Exposition- though mostly interesting, there is entirely too much of it. This is, unfortunately partly due to the influence of a popular writing style in China which embraces 'tell, don't show' for various reasons. I will stress that mostly the story does 'show, don't tell'- and that the style issue is seemingly for 'flavor' (though it adds 'extra' text no matter the reason).
  • Exposition in the middle of dialog- means you get to wait for a response in a discussion-- and sometimes scroll back up to find out what the prompt for the response was to, since it was 'so long ago'.
  • Exposition used to force justification- the author chose a path, and decided to 'explain away' other choices, or 'oversimplify a complex thing' to make it seem like his path is best. Either way- you're reading a bunch of extra stuff. Lots of ruminations & speculations.
  • Pacing- it's not too bad, but obviously it could be better (without so much fluff).
  • Cliche villain motivations- are always a thing, but considering how many other characters were given more depth- it's a shame the villains didn't get some of the same care.
    Spoiler

This is pretty much most of them- at least the dieties- they all act like about 'the same guy' (except Amon- who's 'the same guy' but more clever & has a monocle)

    [collapse]
  • Fake relationship teases- No idea why the author wants to pretend.
    Spoiler

The MC's not interested in getting involved with anyone- probably through the whole book (only 2/3 through at this point). So many authors in Asia make these 'they like me, but I'm pointedly uninterested in women' (because inconvenient/etc) characters. It's a baffling social statement.

    [collapse]
  • Fake relationship teases- why the MC doesn't enlist some characters is baffling.
    Spoiler

Specifically why some potential Tarot club members go uninvited (the pirate captain who loves to teach seems like a gross oversight to me, and I can't figure it out). This is also a 'misleading roster' issue, as all 22 seats never get filled

    [collapse]
  • Killing anonymous people for impact- Arguably 'some people gotta go' to be 'realistic'. That said, there are plenty of groups (besides those controlled by the MC) that could try to protect people, but somehow don't manage.
  • 'You didn't like that guy, did you?' writing. Let's just say be prepared to 'miss' a few good guys.
  • 'I'm not used to my world' writing- The powers introduced as the story develops gives a wide range of potential and possibilities to actions chosen by large, powerful organizations. This 'ability to do stuff' conflicts to a large degree with the 'state of the world' because it could only get there (in many cases) by those powers not being utilized (or in other cases, their potential use ignored). This doesn't mean 'the story is wrong' as it is- just that some processes and situations would be different, or the organizations would evolve more task forces/procedures to handle particular abuses. In short- 'too many evil gods corrupting too many people so easily, (in any random place) ' should have destroyed the world already without some better procedures/oversight. That's just the most extreme case. A LOT of powers are super problematic in ways that are neglected by the story if you give it any thought. This doesn't make the story 'bad'- it just shows that 'large scales' are hard to balance. It's common to follow what you're told to focus on, and not try to imagine 'the rest'.
  • 'Power creep' As the story progresses, power levels get more and more powerful, till 'OP' isn't the end, and 'silly to think there's a counter' is almost where things go.
    Spoiler

Eventually you get 'scripted' what happens and why (more exposition) - but it honestly could go any way with so many powers with so much flexibility, and magic items to boot. The last two volumes have some particularly convoluted 'cleverness' in some battles- and it's best to go 'yeah ok' than to second guess it...

    [collapse]
  • There are several powers utilized throughout the story which are varying degrees of 'too powerful', and make the story less plausible in those areas.
    Spoiler

Some power levels have defenses/offenses/abilities which should go virtually unchallenged- the worst of which is 0-08, a pen which allows the writer to 'direct actual events like narrating a story', where the characters involved do not realize they are 'actors' at the time. The pen's 'curse' of 'being intelligent and trying to use it's own power to try and kill it's wielder' is implemented in a ridiculous way, and reduces the tone of the entire story. Though the item is presented as not omniscient or omnipotent, it's kind of hard to imagine not being able to succeed with such a tool- or die if not careful. It ends up being an overblown forced-plot vehicle, degrading most of the otherwise great plotting and writing.

    [collapse]
  • The BIG main McGuffin
    Spoiler

    Big spoiler- RUINER class
CLOSE IF YOU DON'T WANT THE STORY RUINED!

The main reason everybody does anything is 'for power' or 'fear of other's power', and the main threat that influences everything is a few super-powers that apparently have nothing better to do than hang around outside the planet, waiting for a shield some guy put up ages ago to decay over aeons, that way they can invade. That may not sound unreasonable because 'cliche villains are cliche'- but remember this is a world where the 'lower leveled' powerhouses can 'only' create matter from nothing, (and sometimes life, too (some on accident and a few on purpose)) - but the super-powerful guys who are a huge threat (because 'evil') want this planet to screw over, instead of just... I dunno- finding another or making their own. It's pretty 'prop-up' as a pre-made motivation- but also quite dumb. This may sound like a random nit-pick- but the MC literally makes a whole city of (almost) 'indistinguishable-from-real' residents 2 levels before becoming a god. Other power channels can convert life to other lifeforms, pop babies out almost on demand, and even 'envision' nearly-real creatures. Makes the more powerful baddies sitting around twiddling their thumbs seem petty.

    [collapse]
  • Mind control- yeah, the author doesn't realize how powerful this is. In a story, losing agency is a ruiner in most stories, and 'protecting' it from being obvious becomes different elaborate machinations to hide the plot armor.
  • Time travel- Another OP 'neat trick' that is way under powered. I admit the author's versions are 'weaker variants'- but they're still crazy OP and 100% under used (and they're used a lot).
  • Deus ex Machina: Even though the story is about gods and their powers, doesn't mean abuse isn't still possible.
The Different:

  • One of the rare 'highly developed' world visions I've seen. If not for all the 'exposition' and 'convenient resolutions' this would easily be a top tier story.
Overall, this is well worth reading so long as you can mind the weaknesses it has. <<less

This novel so underrated that I only found it after it's translation completed.

Among all novel I read since 10 years ago this is ranked 2nd (Coiling dragon 1st, because it's a memorable story and my 1st novel).

Everything about the plot, characters, worldbuilding, mystery, power system, etc are perfect for me.

If there's something lacking, it's the author cant complete the whole story yet. Though I'm satisfied with overall ending of this novel.

I took a long time to pick this up. The reason why I procrastinated so much, is due to all the misleading descriptions of the novel leading me to believe that this is a novel about a weakling controlling the lives of very powerful ppl as some kind of puppet master. Boy I was wrong, Klein becomes reasonably strong like 200 chapters in & crazy overpowered half way through. Yeah sure there is a lot of intrigue & scheming, but Klein fights a lot & he is crazy strong..

As for... more>> the webnovel itself, it's very well written, it's comparable to something like the Dresden files series, perhaps better. The only big negative I can think of is the complete lack of romance..

What's especially cool is that in other Chinese webnovels, all the combat is like cultivation level 5 guy goes up against cultivation level4 guy that has some cheat that makes the fight fair & that happens like hundreds of times before the novel is over, however in LoTM every enemy has very unique powers that are earth shatteringly strong later in the series and how those powers interact with each other is very interesting. The main villain of the series is also pretty damn awesome.. (But then again all villains are in this novel)

The best thing for last: NO FILLER, NONE!. <<less

This is the first novel on this site that has prompted me to write a review. If you have not read this, I would reccommend jumping in for the first 2 books (200 chapters per book, I think book 2 concludes around ch 400) with no expectations.

The novel is ambitious with it's worldbuilding and setting the scene for what is probably the most extravagant steampunk reskin of a typical xianxia I've ever read. A fun read regardless for the first two books with an appreciation for horror. Just temper your... more>> expectations per the usual standard of stuff on this site. (this is the only reason why this novel is rated so highly)

Book 3...

Spoiler

Thus begins the bloodborne fanfiction phase. It never really stops either, just continuing to snowball out of control. I honestly thought this novel was written sometime in the early 2000s-2010s given how detailed the setup and cast of characters as well as overarching plot, something I haven't really found in current instant wish-fullfillment power-levelling fantasy series.

I really wanted to like this series, and I really did like some parts. MC overthinks himself and is a bit of a coward, pre-planning and just barely scraping past plot-armour excuses to come out as victorious in the end. He has moments of character building that were insightful and solified what kind of person he was. Most action sequences are genuinely exciting and I got to a point where I was invested in seeing how characters interacted. Some bits actually made me laugh too (not the constant references to curly-haired baboons though, what is up with that). The female characters have slight depth and are guided by their personal motives, not MC's dick. (Just realised MC is celibate the whole series. Wild.) The power increments are believable to begin with, and are reasonably well adjusted to his difficulties. I was actually a bit sad at the sad parts (Dunn, Daly, the interaction with the siblings at the end of the first two books), and celebrated with the characters on their victories. The antagonists at the end gave me a very clear sense of dread every time they were so much as mentioned and were real threats to MC. The Bloodborne fanfiction parts are great, the constant extremely vivid descriptions of body parts falling apart and writhing maggots really adds to the atmosphere and tone. Rose Shepards' disgusting damage reduction mechanic working by vomitting out flesh and blood to mitigate damage and then being able to eat the scraps of blood and flesh off the floor to recover is shown and gets me every time. The marionette town Utopia appearing as a 'horror story' to the masses is interesting but knowing the reasons behind why it exists is great. The sense of 'otherworldly horror' just continues to increase, which is great if that's your jam.

Here's the but: It kind of sucks near the end and the lack of a fulfilling conclusion doesn't help. No characters are given an arc that doesn't feel somewhat shallow and incomplete (except the ones who die lol). They get introduced with a backstory, a motive and a vague path two steps forwards... and then nothing? Nothing past that extremely obvious character growth throughout the series?

The ending being a set-up to the sequel just makes the ending feel half-hearted, incomplete.

Reasons why I wouldn't reccomend this.

Spoiler

Towards the end of the series as the plot and the suspicious ass-pull feelings intensify, the divisions between major arcs fall flat and the train just does not stop. It turns into this 'high-level' set-up, where everything and anything is above the understanding of the masses, and it reflects that in how it's written: wordy and dense. I found myself stalling from reading the last few chapters because it was an honest struggle to read.

This makes it even worse that not everything is cleanly concluded at the end. I regret having expectations due to how good the end of book 2 was. It stays consistently barely interesting but it never reaches the peak again.

What is up with the Demoness sequence. Why does the author put so much emphasis on 'he he men turning into women. he he women are actually men!!'. Why is this sequence such a joke and the Hunter sequence (women > men) is just glazed over once? Why would you write in such a sloppy setting only to pitifully attempt to write in someone trans? There are literal outer gods and MC spends a moment trying to puzzle out if the god would be a woman or a man. Are you for real? Just write more paragraphs of how sexy and pure Audrey is instead of trying your hand at this. The author even writes in someone gay to be immediately used as a joke, then is never seen again after the 'jokes' are over. Just don't bother lmao. Stick to generic power-levelling and 'witty' provoking banter.

[collapse]

Please sir, may I have some closure.

[collapse]

Overall, not a perfect series but a very fun ride at the start. There are too many things later on that prevent me from strongly reccommending it past book 2. Good for a time killer but if the wordy descriptions and overload of worldbuilding are too much, it's not worth it in the end. Just read it up to a point you can be bothered with, it doesn't get much better. <<less

It's a very solid novel. Definitely better than 99% of the other CN web novels out there. However I feel like it didn't live up to its full potential. For example

  • There are many interest side characters but the author did flesh them out enough. Instead I felt he introduced too many extraneous characters when the part of those characters could be given to the "main cast" to flesh them out more.
  • Some very interesting story concept but again the execution is lacking. I can't get into details because of spoilers but the author definitely should have shown more than tell.
  • Again, a lot of interesting villains but lacks development. We only see the actions of the villains through the eyes of the protagonist but the story would benefit much more from the POV of the villain sometimes.
  • Pacing could use a lot more work. Some arcs were amazing while others ended too abruptly
There are also many loose ends that haven't been resolve. Many story threads that didn't have an ending yet. Hopefully part to of this novel solves that. Overall it has been a very enjoyable read. Certainly could use more polish but I have been reading Cuttlefish' works for quite sometime now and you can definitely see the improvement in writing, unlike some authors - cough, cough, IET, cough, cough. Looking forward... more>> to part 2 of the novel. <<less

First of all, kudos to the author and the translator for their meticulous descriptions. The world-building is really the thing here. But that's not the only thing you will get here, there are other great things as well, characters with their own story, mysteries stockpiled and waiting to get uncovered, and much other stuff. Really there are many good things, compared to the other cliché CNs, that you will find inside this. It's a book, crafted with much thought and thorough research. But it also falls short of many things.... more>> What I would write will be my own experience, like why I started reading this book, and why I am dropping this (for now). If I went on to critically analyze this, I am sure I will not be able to do a better job than the people who have already done so. There are many good reviews here, so I will just share my experience, which will be subjective and full of errors. So keep this in mind before reading this:

I started reading this book just not because of the people's reviews about how good the world-building is, how well planned the power level system is, how good the characters are. I started reading this because I have read the author's other works before this, and liked them to some extent. And the major problem most of his previous novels share is that, although there are many characters with their own stories inside his books, they are just that. I mean a character in his book comes with a personality and sticks with the same personality throughout the whole book, there is hardly any change in their characterization. They might be shown to gain some worldly experience and "grow up", but, at the core, they remain the same. Yeah, basically what I find troubling in his books is that it feels like I am looking at a bunch of 1D characters with each possessing their unique traits but never really evolving in any other way. They are there to serve one particular purpose, nothing more than that they do. Characters in his stories do get some character development, but they get it in a really wrapped manner. If you look at them at the end of his stories, you will find that nothing really changed with them, just their situations changed, but their personalities will remain the same, more or less. They might have changed their places, or must have become a bigshot, but in the end, they remain the same, even after all the supposed "character development" they get. Nothing really changes with most of the characters in his book. To summarise: they are useless after a point, and if they appear again, they only induce a headache.

After reading his other books, and realizing this flaw, I thought the author finally decided to cut this out with the-

-thing, which he has applied inside this book. But, nothing really changed. It's still the same, no matter how they act, the characters still remain the same. It's like they are meant to follow a certain route throughout the story. No one really escapes out of the rules and characteristics that the author has decided for them from the beginning. They remain the same.

Though the author really outdid himself with all the world-building and all the mysteries and foreshadowing. But if this is good, so is this bad. With him trying all these things from the start, it really feels like a drag to read this. Like a real drag. If a certain someone's aim is to read this book with the intention of cooling down, then think twice, if you are not careful enough with this, you might even get short-circuited with all the information author throws at you. It feels like hell sometimes. If you read reviews about this book thoroughly, then you might find many people complaining about how slow is it at the beginning, and also many people clarifying how it was the need of the hour, how it was done to accomplish an excellent world-building. Well, both are right. It is a drag at first, and it is a drag for a reason, but it is still a drag nonetheless. Before reading this, I read many saying that this story will shift gears from this chapter onwards, or from that chapter, or from the start of this volume, or from that volume. But be it at the end of volume 1, or volume 2, or at the stage of volume 3, where I am at. The story never really picks up the pace. It does, at some point, but they are nothing but some short outburst and the result of long build-ups. And the build-up, believe me, is a real drag sometimes. Like a real drag, sometimes. You have to read tens, if not hundreds, of chapters of detailed information before you get to anything substantial enough to enjoy.

At the end of volume 1, I thought, ok from this point, it will be fun because other people have said so! But boy, I was left disappointed again. The story only goes on to do more world-building, and it sometimes seems like there is no end to this. Like it does pick up some pace, but you know, it's never really enough.

The things the author has explored inside this story feels too real sometimes. Like many things he writes about are way too easy at certain times to connect to. But like I said before, here too, as many times, characters are used but they never really grow out of their shell. There are many rare instances where some character really does more than they are supposed to do. In the end, even after a character is introduced with their own viewpoint, motives, and personality. They all feel kinda superficial to me. I never really managed to immerse myself in the story, the details are thrown out so much that before I really get into the story, I am awakened once again by the thunder of the tidbits that the author has a fetish to insert inside between events, conversations, or randomly, to inform us how much he knows about the times he is writing about. Like for real, there is no stopping the author, he can go on with his rants about the ambiance for paras before he stops, and the things which he can write about in a line are sometimes there to occupy a major part of your screen when you read the story. Even after all this, the story is good enough to read if you don't mind these long summaries of his research in between your reading experience, and are a fan of the same. Else, it is a big turn off at times.

After finishing volume 2, I proceeded on to read volume 3 with great zeal. I was told in this volume the MC acts like an adventurer at sea, a pirate hunter, and really embodies a great personality, his name being Gehrman Sparrow. But then again, it was really like nothing I had envisioned, here also most of the time all I got to read was details. Like all the old stuff about where this place is located, what was it like before, why it became like this, etc, etc. The story moves forward, but the pace remains the same, slow like always. And the character I was anticipating for so long turned out to be no more than a tsundere. Like cold face but so soft at heart. Like the MC never really changes, he acts and dons all the type of disguises but he never really changes internally, well that's the case for where I am at. He remains the same 'kind-hearted' MC throughout. And for what I was expecting from Gehrman Sparrow, it was ruined by the actual personality of MC, which I believe will never really change. In the end, I never really got to see the craziness I was expecting from Gehrman Sparrow, it is all superficial stuff at this point for me. The novel, at this point, just feels like more of a collection of different kinds of well-structured PowerPoint slides, than an immersive story.

So, I am done reading this coursebook. I have almost completed half of the book, but apart from the details, and some climaxes, and characters who never really grow up, I really got nothing much. I am fed up now. I will try reading this again, but surely it will be with no expectations, I will read it with nothing but a desire to finish an unfinished book.

So it is, my review. Finally, I would say that this is a gem for those who like diving into details, and is a pain for those who seek more climactic moments. So, definitely give it a try, it will help you recognize which one you are. <<less

Sorry bad grammar.

A 4.5☆ story

First, don't worry about naive tag, MC will not make idiotic mistake like many naive MC out there. Most of times MC are cunning and manipulative, so his naive side not too strong. He is mature and still have human feeling, not become cold-bloodedmu*der maniac or hot blooded chick maniac.

... more>> A dark story full of madness. The villain not some idiot-mob just to make MC look mighty or amazing, they're madman.

There are no repetitive face smacking idiot.

No YOU DARE JUNIOR!!!!

No brainless YM

Still no Romance

Have filler, but needed for story dev.

Side chara not easily forgotten.

Funny misunderstanding, like OL (sasuga Ainz-sama XD)

MC Not OP (not yet ofc)

MC power :

Spoiler

MC have personal space, that make him nearly omnipotent (again nearly) but have many limitations. MC can resurrect a couple times (3 times)

[collapse]

Highly recomend for everyone that have no trouble with dark story and a bit filler. <<less

Definitely worth a read, even if it's not your usual cup of tea. The story excels in what it aims for, a mystery based novel with a side of supernatural powers. The only thing I'd criticise it for is that the MC figures out most things almost instantly, so if he gets a certain clue it basically unravels everything up until the next. There isn't much of reflecting in terms of going back to things and rehashing them to discover more, but that is a minor issue. Highly recommend.

Wow. It has been a very long time since I found such a great read. The world building, plot, and characters are amazing, and the translation quality is impeccable. It is like a regular, quality English novel that you might find in print form.... Almost can’t imagine that it was translated from Chinese! This series is so great that I wish had a printed version to collect and store away on my bookshelf for future rereading.

There is an actual plot, and actual mysteries to unravel. Characters grow and change. There... more>> is tragedy. There is helplessness. Yet there is also hope. There is also kindness. We get a glimpse of people from different backgrounds struggling to survive, struggling towards a better future. And our protagonist, in the midst of this chaos, still holds onto his core ideals even when the world has gone crazy.

This series will make you laugh. It will also make you cry... buckets and buckets of tears. But you’ll keep coming back for more, because the characters and the world feels so real. <<less
