Immortal arts, magic weapons, magical powers, and the boundless spiritual qi between heaven and earth vanished into obscurity overnight, and all exorcists turned to mere mortals.

Three hundred years later, the Five Hus traversed the pass, it was a prelude to an era of great turmoil in China. They heralded the end of the world, where thousands of drought fiends stalked the night —— the collapse of the Divine Land is imminent.

Fortunately, within this long, dark night where silence had fallen on all magic, a lone star still glistened brightly on the horizon.

The Heart Lamp appeared, illuminating the vast expanse around it. A sixteen-year-old young man, who will end his life on his twentieth birthday, embarked on a journey to reclaim the spiritual qi of heaven and earth that had been sealed away —— only four years remain.

The road ahead was filled with countless thistles and thorns, and it seemed improbable for him to succeed.

————

Chen Xing: “The important thing is that I’m the last exorcist in this world, yet the only magic I am capable of is emitting light. What can I do?”

Wait patiently then. When the Dinghai Pearl reappears on earth, the uncertain trajectory of everyone’s fates will be completely disrupted before converging once more.

Chen Xing: “Could I be partnered with a more normal Protector Martial God?”

Isn’t your Protector really skilled in fighting?

Chen Xing: “He is good at fighting, but when he loses it he’ll hit even me……”

There’s nothing that can be done about that, you can only blame yourself for losing yourself to lust.

An interesting, well written novel, with an excellent pacing. The main characters' personalities and interactions are a pleasure to observe. The author managed to show a gradual, believable and comfortable progression from enemies-strangers to aquintances to friends to something beyond, without using any overdone tropes such as extreme possessiveness, jealousy towards anything breathing, obsession, unwelcome body contact at every turn, etc. The mystery of the plot unfolds step by step, without overwhelming with action or information, yet everything that happens is meaningful and serves to progress the plot or develop... more>> the characters. <<less

One of my favourite books ever, honestly. Initially I wasn't really sold on it, reading the description, but giving it a chance was one of the best decisions I ever made. The characters, plot, humour, dogblood, the educational value in how rich this book is in historical and philosophical references, I feel like it was written with me in mind lol. I can't recommend it enough and only wish its fandom was larger (´Д`)

If I could describe Dinghai in one word then it would be chaos but in a good way. This story, to me at least, is quite unique. How can a story feel serious but also like don't take it that serious at the same time? Anyways, overall, Dinghai is really good. It's just a fun read with crazy adventures, solving mysteries, and just trying to save the world. But it really does surprise you after finishing the first volume. We have a great set of different characters like Chen... more>> Xing having a pure heart but is all over the place and Xiang Shu who acts like a tsundere but is a little soft on the inside. The ship is so adorable yall so dont worry too much about it. For the shippers out there, the ending will be worth it so keep fighting and pushing!! This story is a slow burn with an emphasis on the word slow. Was I screaming and close to ripping my hair out from frustration? Sure... but it was worth it. There were some parts that made me feel depressed but it's not really angsty until like the second half of the whole novel. It might seem like just comedy and having fun adventures but the second half hits somewhere in my heart. I can't really describe it without spoiling anything so read it for yourself. The only negatives are the slow burn like I mentioned before and the descriptions on the dynasty and time of events. The translators did an amazing job at describing them but it still confused me. I wouldn't say it's super important but it does give you a headache when trying to understand. Anyways, Dinghai is amazing and it feels like a crazy roller coaster full of events and emotions. It might seem a little bit all over the place in the beginning but it's honestly so fun and just a nice read. <<less

This is one of the best novels I've read. All of the characters are so well written. The MC Chen Xing, is especially loveable. He's simultaneously smart and a bit of an air head. He's adorable and his heart is so full of warmth, he is the figuratively and literally the light in a world gone dark. Not to mention he's hilarious! The supporting cast are all quirky and so well fleshed out too. I'd honestly be surprised if there's anyone out there who's read this novel and didnt end... more>> up loving pretty much all the characters standing by MC's side.

The storyline is very compelling -- I love the world-building in this. Also the adversaries the MC faces are nothing to scoff at-- from the demon king to fate itself, you really feel the struggles Chen Xiang faces. The romance between Chen Xing and Xiang Shu is definitely a slow burn, but it's so real. I love the way they bicker but then will do anything to save the other.

I came across this novel because I watched Tian Bao Fu Yao Lu first. Knowing what comes after this novel definitely changes the experience, but I'm so glad I decided to read this. This novel is such a gem. <<less

Great plot and great story as expected from author Fei Tian.

MC is hillarious and focus on strange things. ML is half Han half Hu, a great Chanyu. I love how this novel gives different vibes and new perspective for me, as other Chinese novels usually just throw Hu people to become their enemy without giving their reasons or backgrounds.

I also love Xiao Shan, his interaction with MC is so funny and like a mom and son. I like it when MC tied Xiao Shan like a melon to him🤣🤣

The plot is very progressive, and the comedy is solid. The premise of the novel is also fairly unique for xuanhuan/wuxia. Characters are pretty cool as well, and I like the MC.

There aren't too many flaws in it I suppose, but I just never really got into it. Might be my own situation, as I read this a while back when I was in a sort of depressive state haha, and it was a speed read too (and since the plot progresses really quickly, it quickly became confusing and hard... more>> to keep up). Still, reviews are supposed to be subjective, so this is my take on it. <<less

This is sooo slow burn (but with a reason) and it just hits different. In most novels, I don’t genuinely ship the main characters, I just accept them as a pair. But with this novel, the interactions were so cute I was about to scream.

This is really good work. The plot is amazing, the characters are interesting, the writing is beautiful, and the peace of storytelling is perfect. It is pretty long and has many characters, but even though I always have problems remembering every detail or character name in this novel, I remember everything. It was so gripping that it was impossible to forget anything. There were so many events and plot twists that I felt a bit dizzy, but this is exactly what makes this novel so good.

It is labelled as a... more>> comedy. I wouldn't say that this is a comedy. There are many funny scenes, but there are also many sad moments. The author swiftly switches from sad to funny and then to philosophical scenes. This novel is full of many different human stories that arouse different emotions. Sometimes the story was too sad and melancholic, and sometimes it was so funny that I couldn't stop laughing. It is like real life—sometimes happy and sometimes sad. It was very well written; it is a bit angsty, but not to the point where the reader goes crazy because of the worry. So I wouldn't say that this is a comedy or light reading.
Characters are really interesting. MC is a clever young individual, but sometimes he gets sidetracked. I swear he has ADHD. He gets distracted really easily and often misses important details, but he is clever when it counts. I love that one moment he acts silly and the other moment he opens his mouth and says something so wise and poetic that he amazes you. The synopsis also stated that MC is lustful; this is a baseless accusation (not really). He just loves to think about how beautiful his family protector is; his protector is amazing; his protector is clever; even in the middle of the battle, he won't forget to point out how amazing his protector is. He just likes his protector too much. I love ML too. He is wild, too smart, and aggressive. The description says that he often beats up MC, which is not true; most of the time, he is just threatening MC that he will beat him up. Which is slightly better. But he cares too much about MC and isn't willing to make MC suffer. In general, ML has an aggressive character and is easily irritated; he himself knows about it but can't control himself, yet he is more patient and gentle with MC.
This novel is too plot-oriented. This is one of those novels you can't surmise or explain. Its plot is complicated. There were too many events. It is well-written too, so it was a true joy to read it. Characters step by step investigate different events and are getting closer to their goal. To simplify the plot,
Spoiler

for unknown reasons, one day, 300 years ago, all magic disappeared, so MC, who is the last great exorcist and has only magical artifact that don't require mana to work, is trying to bring magic back and restore the previous world order. Apart from that evil good who was defeated a thousand years ago but wasn't annihilated completely, he is trying to be resurrected. On top of all of that, MC is going to die when he turns 20; he is already 16 years old, so he has little time left. In only four years, he must bring magic back and kill the evil god.

[collapse]
So the novel is action-packed. Because of that, romance seems to be scarce, but I think there was a perfect amount of MC and ML interactions.

The romance is sweet and lovely, but only towards the end. It is slow and a bit frustrating. But at the same time, it was very nice to read about. The MC and ML relationship is complicated. They have tacit understanding when they are on the battlefield or scheming, but in terms of feelings, they are too clueless. Most of the time, they can't tell what the other one is feeling or thinking, which is frustrating for them and for readers as well. It sounds awful, but the author wrote it very well, so it is still enjoyable to read. You can tell that both of them like each other, but still, most of the time, they argue, ML threatens MC to beat him up, and MC gets upset, so they have a cold war and ignore each other. At first, it was hard to understand why they liked each other, but later, the author slowly explained their feelings, and you finally understood why they fell in love and why they were perfect for each other. It's just that MC knows that he's going to die; he can't start a relationship at this time; it would be too selfish, but still, he likes ML. He has all these pent-up emotions that he can't express properly and has nowhere to vent, so instead he just enjoys annoying ML. On the other hand, ML feels a bit rejected because of one small incident, which gave ML the idea that MC would reject his feelings
Spoiler

MC rejected another suitor; ML overheard it. I thought it was perfect; there would be no misunderstanding, but I was wrong. The reason MC used it for rejecting was too close to ML, and he thought that he himself would also be rejected. We readers and MC too find out about it too late

[collapse]
and MC's actions, when he disregards his well-being and strives all the time to sacrifice himself, drive ML crazy. So both of them are frustrated and argue all the time, but don't be afraid; they will get together; they will be very sweet but also keep arguing; they can't help it.
Side characters are amazing too; no one, not even a single one of them, is normal, but they are lovable. At worst, you will have mixed feelings about them. I guess this is one of the reasons why this novel is so good. It has an interesting plot and characters who have crazy interactions, which make the story even more fascinating.

To be honest, sometimes I was too worried about MC and ML. I knew that the novel had a happy ending, but sometimes I was too engrossed in the moment and became nervous because the writing was too good. The novel is too good.
For readers who love good adventures and supernatural stories, this is for you. It is long, but worth every minute spent reading it. It never becomes boring. The flow is perfect. <<less

This novel was so good. I just loved the dynamic relationship between the two characters. I initially picked it up after watching the trailer of the donghua and since I didn’t want confusion, I decided to give it a go and lord!! It was worth it. The character growth was so well portrayed especially with Xiang Shu. From being a romantic stone to being a romantic softie. The weight the characters placed in their love was a lot. For me it is a highly recommended novel and it is one... more>> of my favorite reads. <<less

Rating: 5 stars

I really can’t explain why I enjoyed this novel so much; the premise, comedy, and execution were just fun in a “you don’t have to think too hard about it” way.

The characters are relatively simple but still fun to watch; their development and relationships are one of the highlights of the novel. As for the plot, ... more>>

I found book 1’s conclusion to be a little underwhelming in its simplicity, but the other 4 books to be much more interesting and well-paced. I was (surprisingly) on board with the time travel aspect of book 5, and found it to be refreshing and well utilized (it corrected all of book 1’s faults lol).

[collapse]

I do think that some character dynamics,

were frustrating and not fully fleshed out, but the novel does improve with time and by the end of the story, I was fully on board.

In the end, Dinghai Fusheng Lu is a breath-of-fresh-air novel that doesn’t overstay its welcome and provides a great ride of a read; it’s a masterpiece in its own right. <<less

EVERYONE REALLY SHOULD READ THIS MASTERPIECE!

It’s definitely a ride that I will never forget and how I wish I can forget about everything, so I can read it and experience the thrill once again.

Fei Tian really did a wonderful job in describing the pain, joy, sad and a bit of angst (because of the slow burn romance between MC and ML) for all the characters. Even the side characters also leave a huge impact once you have finished the novel.

Kudos to the translator team for did such a good job.... more>> I’m so gonna miss everyone and Exorcist Department : ( <<less

This novel seems magnificent to me. The author knows how to take you on a trip to different settings. I love the MC, although I love the ML there are some things that do not convince me of his attitude.

This story is a gem with all my favorite tropes!

The setting and characters are so rich and full. Not to mention there's so much romance and URST. Its a slow burn, but the best kind that teases you. I also can't help but love the MC and his comedic attitude literally had me laughing, (also the ML is just a big jar of vinegar).

I also love watch the main CP grow as they overcome their biases. Even the side characters are all important and only add to the story.
