The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

An absolute gem. This is a masterpiece. The main characters, the plot, but the best part is the authors writing which always manages to pull at the readers heartstrings.

Thank you so much for translating this.

This is my first time MTLing and I already read spoiler before so... yeah...

This is that kind of story where you'll cry a lot... You'll get annoyed a lot but there's many sweet and funny things too. I like Shizun! MC is a bit annoying... #cough# and dumb #cough# but he grows up so much in the end. There's so many Misunderstanding between MC and ML but their relationship will progress... With so many heartache... Well, it's hard for me to say it. But this story is beautiful and ML... more>> (is uke/shou) is beautiful and the ending beautiful too <<less

u'see, I just knew this novel for less than a week. and instantly engrossed in the story. my God huhuhu Shizun...
but before I write review, lemme say this
Spoiler

MO RAN YOU f*ckEN IDIOT. THIS s*upid DOG!! HOW CAN YOU THAT BLIND!!?? ALSO SHIZUN, PLS DON'T HIDE FEELINGS LIKE THIS. YOU BOTH ARE IDIOTS I'M SUFFERING HERE AAAAAAAAA.

*cough* okay, i'll save the full review till I finish reading. say, this one looks hilarious but the amount of knives are definitely higher. also the misunderstandings are, wow, so plenty that it's not even funny. I'm pretty sure I'm very annoyed with Mo Ran (gong/MC). who's the s*upid dog, certainly him. honestly, Shizun/Chu Wanning (shou) is too good for him. but strangely I'm waiting how he finally made things right. he's idiot dog, but still redeemable. it's quite rare for me. whenever I see s*upid characters in a novel, i'll lose interest and just drop it, never look back.

the mystery/plot is actually engaging. but for some reason I feel that it's kinda overshadowed by roller coaster of feels. eh I'm not even in half. so the thought can be changed.

but this novel has 300+ chapters. welp, the struggle is still long. and I don't wanna ruin the a̶n̶g̶s̶t̶fun so I don't read spoilers O<~<
Spoiler

oh author-san, just kill me already. I'm dying with the feels.

For me, absolute masterpiece. Why? Traditional Chinese mythology, poetry and dao teachings made into a book - this is beyond words... Peerlees.

Redemption arc - heartbreaking.

Absolutely astounding plot.

And desire written like nowhere else.

This book is my fav by so far.

I found this novel because several were talking about it, and even started to read Manhua and I finished it up to date then I tried start the novel. I'm only on chapter three but I want to get one thing out of the way.
Alright, I just want to say that the English translation for this is very confusing to me. The main characters name is mo ran but the translation I keep finding is the ink burning, I looked up in the fandom and I know that is what his name translates to, but it bothers me. I can deal with the translation saying master instead of shizun, which I find odd because it's in the title. But everyone else's name is not translated like this.
This was probably a s*upid thing to write but I'm wondering if there is an accurate translation out there? I could wait for seven seas but I'm invested enough that I want to read as soon as possible. If there isn't an accurate translation at the moment I suppose I can deal with 300 + chapters until then.

I 'm just writing this review because I see some have some misunderstandings about the novel. And I 'm sure they didnt complete the novel. From the novels I have read till now this is one of the best. At first I wasnt interested in this cause I thought the title was kinda silly and the summary was nothing much..... seemed like the typical rebirth series. I read it only because I heard that it was getting made into a drama. I dont regret reading this. Just know that this... more>> is not what it looks like in the beginning there is more into it. So if you like angst give it a try and try to complete it if you start reading. The story will keep getting dense.
Little introduction to the characters

Chu Wan Ning..... He is a guy who looks cold and intimidating but is warm at heart. One of the top powerful cultivators in the novel with three spiritual weapons. Became a Grand master at a young age and is an elder at the peak of life and death. Have only 3 disciples cause of the reason mentioned first. Have a thin skin so even if he want to do some things like comforting he will hesitate and try to make it look like he didnt do it.

For example a scene from it (read it only if you want to not any important spoiler from the plot)

When the disciples were going back after their lesson he notices that they were really happy but thought that their happiness will fade if they see him so he hides himself and puts a barrier above the kids so that they wont get wet in the rain.

A nice and strong guy......

Mo Ran

This is the guy you are gonna hate at some point. Like the title he is kinda dumb. Not gonna talk much about him cause you gotta experience this yourself.

"Hey sir i've been looking at you for a long time. Why are you ignoring me ? "

"I dont know anyone here but just from looking at you, I like you the most. How about I worship you as my shizun ?"

" Chu Wanning, I hate you to death but I only have you left "

Yea that accelerated very quick.

Xue Meng and Mei Hanxue

I love them...... Xue Meng is shown as an arrogant and proud son of heaven. He is talented and hard working. Just calls everyone dog except his parents, his friend shi mei and shizun. He just transforms into a quail infront of his shizun and he respects him a lot. And Mei hanxue is a flirty guy and yea Xue Meng gets annoyed by him easily. But their relationship gets better.

Tbh I kinda shipped them but..... its fine....

Shi Mei

Really nice. Respects his shizun. Just beautiful ~ Not that strong tho....

Ye Wangxi

This person is strong and dedicated general. One of those few people who was really hard for Mo Ran to deal with and someone he wouldnt want to make enemies with. I really loved this character.

This was a pretty awkward review... I know.... But trust me and read until the end. It will hurt.... so if you are not comfortable with angst maybe you can say bye bye ~ <<less

Where do I begin...

Well first, do not be fooled by the title and description like me. If you thought this was going to be a cute and fluffy novel, you thought wrong. This is way far the opposite of that spectrum... and that is one of the reasons I absolutely love this!

This is not a story for everyone. Plenty of scenes can be distressing for a lot of people so I advise those who planned to read to check the trigger warnings which is available in the translation. Please heed... more>> them as the scenes are very graphic and explicit and includes below -

Spoiler

blood, death, non-con, dub-con, r@pe, heavy angst, etc.

[collapse]

That said, if you still plan to continue reading, try to approach it with an open mind and finish it till the end before making your judgment.

At the beginning, the story feels like it's going to be one of those time travel fix-its where the main characters go back to the past and right their mistakes and to an extent, it does do that but not really in a way you expected to.

Overall, the plot is amazing! Not once did I guess what was going to happen next. It really will take you on a rollercoaster ride full of ups and downs and twists and turns. The emotional moments were done great and even the mini-arcs were set perfectly for you to take a break from the revelations and mysteries going on and although it may seem random at first, those mini-arcs really set up and provide some character development.

After you finish reading the story, you realize that hints to the mystery being unfolded have been scattered all over the story already and again, it was so hard to guess what was going to happen next!

The main characters are very well-written. They are, by no means, perfect people but their flaws are what make them amazing characters. Chu Wanning is one of the best characters I've encountered in danmei. At first, he comes off as the usual strict and stoic type filled with righteousness and what-not but he is unexpectedly naive in a lot of matters. His struggles against his weakness and how he overcomes them as well as how he struggles between his ideals and his love... it's just so good.

Mo Ran... where do I begin with this dumb man. Plenty of people are probably going to hate him whether or not that changes at the end of the story who knows. He tends to assume other people's words, reactions and feelings which contributes a lot to the misunderstandings going on. Granted, Chu Wanning really doesn't make it easy for him. Mo Ran is so stubborn that it takes the end of book 1 for him to realize that he was wrong about his Shizun. That said, I really love his development throughout the story. Does he redeem himself? It's up to the reader

RanWan. I have never believed that love is something 'good' or 'pure' but I always believed it is unconditional and to love and to be loved unconditionally is a toxic kind of love. That's what this is, a toxic love. But just because it's toxic, doesn't make it any less true. And it's also what this is, a true love.

They have gone through unimaginable things, they have hurt and be hurt by each other, the things they have done for each other produced such terrible consequences and yet they continue to accept, forgive, and love each other and that love transcended multiple lifetimes. Chu Wanning honestly deserves better than Mo Ran but he doesn't want anyone better, he wants Mo Ran and that's what matters. And that's why I absolutely love this couple!!!! <<less

Worth all the angst tbh. I'm grateful I actually became interested and tried reading it, it is super duper worth it. It's worth all the tears I shed due to the angst lmao (there's also fluff too though).

Imo I think in terms of relationship progress and romance it's better than MDZS. I even think overall in terms of characters and plot it's better too. It's more intriguing in a way and more bloody then MDZS. Also no characters are actually good or bad. Both MC and ML did wrongs and... more>> they really are portrayed as imperfect characters which I really appreciate. If you are bothered by the r*pe tag, there is a reason why it happened and the plot twist is very very good. Little details here and there really pop out later on as there is a reason why things happened the way they did.

Overall a 4.85/5 it's super duper good, to the point I'm actually considering buying the hard copy. Y'all should check it out, the angst and tears is super worth it. Also if you are a fan of pining, mutual pining and longing this is super recommended for you. Also its very much a HE.

Spoiler

In the extra after the ending they spent time together in like a secluded forest, and spend a rather mundane life there after all the sht they went through. Also there's smut in the extra.

[collapse]

Highly recommended, y'all should try and read this at least once, it's super immersive and a very interesting read. Also, though heavy it isn't super heavy to the point your head hurts and you can't understand anything (although it isn't a light read either). Go check this out and read it (。•̀ᴗ-) ✧ <<less

Really quite just at the start of this novel (Chap 39) but had to come and make a remark. So I have read endless reviews about how tragic and dog blood and vicious and angtsy etc this novel is. Why does no one mention that some parts are just absolutely hilarious!? I mean... the author's notes and some of Mo Ran's thoughts had me guffawing out loud at 5 am. So far I am on the "LOVE IT" end of the spectrum. Anyway back to reading and realizing it's good... more>> I can enjoy the humor for now 'cause then there is going to come the pain everyone is talking about. Ohhhh boyyy. <<less

Whether this novel is good or bad, there are endless discussions. Because it covers sensitive themes and it doesn't shy away from diving into detail. What I can assure you is that it will shackle you to read until the end and think about it endlessly at night. Hell, it even got into my dreams.

Characters

Both of the main characters are emotional wrecks

  • Chu Wanning - 9.5/10 - Happy little tree painted by Bob Ross-
Tsundere driven to the extreme. You probably had a period in your life of sheer... more>> coldness (probably in your teens). Chu Wanning feels like a very relatable character. He will not accept help, will not forget and though it seems he does not forgive, it is more to him than meets the eye.

He has reached a point where his reputation is well known by everybody. He hates himself and wants to change his attitude, but doesn't know where to begin and is aware that society will criticize him for changing.

There is a lovely dissonance between what he feels and what he shows, which leads to lots of conflicts. What I didn't really like about him is that he sometimes happen to lose consistency
Spoiler

, like when he cries for like 30 chapters straight. I'm not saying he is not allowed to show emotion, his character evolves a lot, but sometimes he gets too far from his mold

[collapse]
.

  • Mo Ran - 8.5/10 - hot king of hotness, did I mention he is sexy, very much so, and he has a huge shlong
Mo Ran doesn't knows much about emotion, doesn't understand himself, his feelings and the feelings of people around him, and doesn't even know that many words. Feels refreshing to have such a s*upid protagonist that the author doesn't simp ove- OH NO HE IS HOT. And we have to be reminded of this several times. Yes the part where Chu Wanning reads about his d*ck size is funny, but we don't need to be reminded of his sausage every few chapters.

What I like about him as a protagonist is how unreliable he is to the reader. Just when you thought you knew him quite well, you learn another thing about him that you never expected. That happens to the very end of the book. You think you know him, that you spent enough time with him. You never know him well enough.

  • Other characters- this story surprisingly holds very well its first two thirds with only 4 important characters. Xue Meng and Shi Mei seem like basic characters that do their job well and don't need several layers in order to work- but they get their own arcs later on! I was very pleasantly surprised.
There are only a handful of supporting characters, and they are well fleshed out. Also if you think there are not enough female characters (a sin of the genre, not this book in particular), you will be pleasantly towards in the end.

Action& Plot- Awe-Inspiring, Heartbreaking, h**ny

This book excels at sending you in a faraway place and stealing your thoughts away. The worldbuilding is great, exactly what one loves most about fantasy. This book has the most BEAUTIFUL celestial description passages I've ever read, and it's flexing them throught several parts of the plot- "Jincheng Lake was frozen without traces of snow, as if there were jewels made of glass across the sky and earth, the Milky Way itself fallen upon mere mortals, falling stars seen as far as ten thousand miles, a scene peerless in magnificence. It was as if one had truly journeyed to the end of humanity, to a world covered in beautifully untainted snow."

Sometimes I don't know if I'm reading Chinese or western fantasy- there are dragons and giant wolves, underworlds and dimension switching, immortality seekers and soulmates. I can feel the author's passion and everflowing imagination for regarding faraway concepts.

One think I was wondering while reading was whether Mo Ran was gonna adress the elephant in the room -his rebirth- and face his demons. Once this happens, it will feel like everything before that was just filler haha.

There are 2 kinds of people. Some want high stakes, save-the-world stories and other want more character driven and personal stories. This book managed to have it both ways. First two parts are more fun, random shenanigans and personal quests, while the last one is high staked.

The one thing I didn't like-
Spoiler

Mo Ran's degeneracy in his previous life just did not have to be due to an evil flower. Those fantasy devices belong in lazy stories with bad character development and motivation. Mo Ran needed no explanation or influence for what he has done- it was 100% in his character. He has already been fleshed out. It was believable and understandable.

I know the flower just amplified the hate that was already there, but it just felt like a big slap to the reader's face. Make it a story about the humans' condition, about how even the best-willed people can fall into darkness. Make it feel like he could be real. This "flower" worked at characterizing the villan at the expense of our protagonist's credibility.

I don't want a "he was good all along" protagonist. There is no trouble with having a degenerate as our MC.

[collapse]

Ending impressions- Walt Disney is rolling in his grave

Spoiler

I was hoping for a bittersweet ending. But it was the happy ending disney shit, suddenly and out of nowhere. Most of the plot twists were brilliantly foreshadowed, but hoho not this one. There is a simple solution for this- cut the last 2 chapters. You got the perfect ending right there. But no, we must please the yaoi fangirls.

(also, Mo Ran not only lives, but he is bipolar now. Which made the whole dramatic parting between Shizun and Taxian-Jun kinda useless)

[collapse]

Conclusion- still a 10/10

I have been harsh in my review because you must be harsh with the people you love- just like Chu Wanning almost beat Mo Ran to death in the beginning. In truth, this story destroyed me mentally with how much I love it. I have read two thirds of it machine-translated because I just can't wait 16 years (yes I calculated) for the translation to be done.

This book rendered most of the books I've read until now kinda useless- it is simply that thought-provoking and better form all points of view. If gore and s*xual themes don't upset you, then it is something you totally must read in this lifetime.

Yes, it is not perfect. But if it makes you care so much about it to the point you love to hate it and love it again, then it desreves a clean 10.

BONUS- translation: sadly, the translation is as of now in a limbo. I see that novelupdates has removed the main translation and doesn't even have links to the machine transaltion. Also, I don't like the main translators' attitude. I will gladly buy the books when they are officially out in english. The documents were locked form downloading and I couldn't even extract a few quotes. Right now, even if it changed my life and view over some themes, I feel like it's not destined towards me, the english speaking audience.

Let's hope that the drama adaptation will bring it to light and we will someday have it on our shelves. Until then, if you plan to read it, the internet is fortunately still full of links and gateways. <<less

I am crying every few chapters in this book. I have to put it down because it's just too much. Too many feelings.

I will admit that I'm emotional, but not that emotional. But apparently it doesn't apply to this book.

All the characters are great.

And novelupdates has really spoiled me. The translation is so, so good. It is only translated till 149, but I couldn't wait so I tried to read other translations. Bad, is being generous. Idk, they're too clunky. So, here I am, waiting for further translation. (Too bad... more>> I can't read Chinese). <<less

This was the only novel I was inspired to finish reading completely as this is a masterpiece. Everything I wish to have in a chinese novel is here.. I usually get sidetracked or didn't get to complete as I lose interest in the middle.

Nothing compares to this novel, iam sad the live action won't follow the story completely.

As much as I love Mo Ran I hate Taxian Jun, I might be the only one who doesn't like him as the emperor, but Mo Ran Ran literally gives hope that the... more>> worst people can change thier ways.. I love it takes a lot of time for them to confirm each other's feelings which is also my favorite thing.. <<less

This novel may be a bit difficult to read for those who are more sensitive to violence, gore or non-con elements. I usually don't read much with non-con, but this novel was so well written and so complex that it wasn't hard to overlook, mainly because they weren't really romanticized. I would encourage readers not to let these elements deter them as this story is honestly quite a masterpiece.

I was really impressed by the character development, especially with the MC who starts off as a truly horrible person. The author/story... more>> does not sweep any of his evil-doing under the rug like a lot of other stories do. When he is reborn, he is still initially a jerk and very immature, but there's such a natural progression to his character. He definitely starts out with the emotional intelligence of a rock, but by the mid-point, I think anyone who reads this will agree that this is one of the best character growths that's ever been written in this genre. MC confronts his past mistakes head-on, and as his worldview expands, he actively changes himself. And not just for the cliche reason of "for the person I love" but because he truly regrets his past actions and recognizes the depth of his mistakes. Would definitely recommend giving it a try! Also can't wait to see how this will all be translated to screen when the live-action drama is released. <<less

I’ve been debating whether to read this for a while. Reading so many reviews & comments about how heartbreaking it is was deterring, to say the least. But I wanted to read it before the drama aired so here we are.

I was trying to slowly develop this review while reading because my memory sucks but as I read further, I found myself deleting a good chunk of my review. There were too many twists and revelations that kept changing my thoughts on the characters and the overall story. I understand... more>> why so many people say this one is painful. There’s a lot of suffering, a lot of misunderstandings, a lot of death, and a lot of secrets untold.

You’ll build up your own judgments while starting this novel and come out with a whole new understanding of the characters and why they did what they did. Death was a main topic in this novel so by Book 3 I was pretty numb to it until some of my favorite characters died. But this novel has the TRAGEDY tag so I should’ve been more prepared.

All the characters came to live in this book and I got attached to a lot of them. Sect leader Xue, Madam Wang, Xue Meng, Nangong Si, Ye Wanxi, Mei Hanxue and even...

Was a beautiful way to end the story. There is so much more I could say but no words can explain the emotional rollercoaster I just went through. I've finished reading this story months ago. Can't believe I didn't review. Rude😒

I've forgotten my exact thoughts on it then, but I still remember my view on it.

This story is a MASTERPIECE!

... more>> The misunderstandings. The knives. The action scenes. Smuts. Mysteries.

This author loves these two: misunderstanding and knives. Poor Casts😔

Anyways, I feel like Taxian jun is underrated. My poor baby. Give more love, people!

I love all the characters.

Chu wanning in my imagination is pure and just... so good.

Moran is great.

I ship Ximei and Mei Hanxue, Ji and Mei Hanxue too😂

I love how all the characters, villians and others, all have back stories to them.

I still can't get over it but 400+ chapters ain't a small journey to run back to quickly again, maybe later😂

Now, what I'm waiting for is the drama adaptation. They better give this masterpiece justice.

Did I mention that I love those action scenes?😭

Also, I can't imagine the characters, especially Chu Wanning without the drama casts in my brain.

Characters I'm looking forward to? All, but Taxian jun the most. My baby. I know that venerable one is an as*hole BUT that venerable one is also a victim people! Hatred flower. Remember?😡 <<less

Okay, so this is the first time I'm going to review something here so I feel like it will be kind of a mess - even more because I love this book a lot and I rarely know what to say when commenting in English...

2HA is not for the weak-hearted, and maybe even for the strong ones it won't be very easy to taste, but it was an amazing read for me. It took me some time to start reading it - because I confess reading the content warnings and... more>> the tags had scared me at first - but after I started it, I could not stop. The trigger warnings don't sugarcoat it (there's a lot of heavy stuff in it) but I was able to read through it and I don't think Meatbun romanticized any of the violent things on it...

I finished reading it very fast (the MTL was a pain, there's only so many 'ink burn' you can read without losing concentration, but I couldn't wait for a human translation haha) and it broke my heart so much but also mended it so well that I cannot stop myself from loving the whole thing - even all of the pain it brought me hahaha It was funny and fluff and ughh so many good quotes from these characters that I learned to love.

I don't know how to put it into words how much all these chapters were well developed, how the main couple convinced me about true love, but ahhh they really did. I loved Meatbun's writing (their author notes were very funny as well) and for me Mo Ran's character development/redemption arc was one of the best (and most heartbreaking) ones I've ever seen. I love him! Chu Wanning was everything to me as well...

Spoiler

Everytime I stop to think about how their love saved each of them in the two lifetimes and how after it saved the world it blows my mind... don't even get me started about their soulmate weapons HAHAH

Anyways, I just think this book is really good, and I really recommend it - if you can deal with the heavy subjects on it, of course! Ranwan invented love! <<less
