Qi Ye is a really good novel, one of my favorites for sure.

  • The cp’s dynamics are really interesting, and sweet.
  • Wu Xi, ah I love him. His pining towards Jing Qi really makes this novel so good.
  • The Politics were not hard to understand at all, which was enjoyable to read.
  • Jing Qi is a really fun MC, quite different from your typical MC.
  • Zhou Zishu’s backstory is a bonus.

I have mixed feelings about this one, It started out strong and interesting but further on I realized that I am not really all that attached to the plot or characters. I love anti-heroes, even straight up villain protagonists (up to a certain extent) but despite this novel teeming with those, I just felt detached to any of them or whatever plot they cook up for that matter. Perhaps it is because its in the MC's POV which would make sense since he is supposed to be detached?

I have mixed... more>> feelings with the cp. I actually enjoyed their development as friends better because when it came to romantic development, the ML kind of ruins it for me. The gap between his usual demeanor and his (admittedly, mild) yandere tendency just makes me want for MC to swat him away like a naughty dog. Not helping is MC treating him as kid. Overall though, I like them enough as their own characters and together but kind of like in a 'oh nice' side cp way.

That said the prose and writing is really beautiful and evokes gorgeous imagery. It's probably why I dragged myself to finish it because even though I did not care for the fate of most of the characters or the setting, the prose is still really enjoyable and would often make me feel a twinge of emotion.

If you like politics and can get past the detached way the story is told then you will probably enjoy this one a lot more than me. <<less

Priest's books never disappoint, aaah my heart was in my throat at the last few chapters of the book. Chance of redo in life, Royal political intrigue, a complicated love triangle, and so lovable Characters. I read this after tian yeke and I gained in-depth understanding of the Characters. Also the dirty filthy side of royal politics, like they are supposed to be good guys but.. What is right, what is wrong, it's so hard to decide. Even the scummiest Character has his moral upstanding point, even the good Characters... more>> had to get their hands dirty in this game of throne. <<less

One of the most wonderful things this book does is telling us that fate is not at all a deciding factor of life!

Jing Beiyuan, fated to be entangled intimately with Helian Yi for 7 lifetimes, spends 6 of them being at odds with him because of a simple mistake by a Soul Reaper that turned their bond to that of enemies. For his 7th life, returning and reborn into the same body as his 1st life time - things have inevitably changed. After all that talk of fated bonds, in... more>> the end his own feelings have cooled, and his expectations lowered.

Jing Beiyuan, wanting to live a simple life this time around, finds that he cannot truly do so. The relations he has with Helian Yi notwithstanding, there are new players in the game that weren't there before. And his centuries cold heart, in front of a little spec of unwavering honesty and forthrightness, slowly begins to warm once more.

Priest always manages to write such beautifully complex characters. Each have their own desires, own paths to walk and end to meet. No character can be painted with a single shade of black or white either. In the end, it is a story to be told, with each person playing their part. And regardless of how memorable the story may or may not be, it is still a compelling one, if only beacause of Priest's distinguised writing style.

The translator's done a wonderful job as well! So a big kudos to them too!

Ok... so I liked it. Well, I think I did it. Honestly, I had quite a back-and-forth relationship with this novel.

To start things off, I did not read this due to the new craze over Wen Kexing and Zhou Zhishu after Word of Honor came out this year. I actually came across this novel whilst working my way through various popular danmei novels. Lord Seventh intrigued me with the apparent highlight of palace politics.

The plot was interesting. The whole court politics and the morally questionable actions that each character did... more>> to help Helian Yi get the throne were both intriguing and horrifying. There was no clear definition between what is considered black or white. I didn’t know whether I could truly root for a character.
Spoiler

I was in tears when Liang Jiuxiao discovered the horrible things that his sect brother had done to the Jiang family when he had become so attached to Jiang Xue. It was even worse that Beiyuan, Helian Yi and Zhou Zhishu were playing and making jokes with Jiang Xue, knowing what they were going to kill her and her family.

[collapse]

The romance was conflicting. The relationship between the two was very sweet. And the undying trust and puppy love that Wu Xi had for Jing Beiyuan was endearing. However, I couldn’t really tell when Beiyuan actually started to like Wu Xi as more than just a cute kid, or if ever did. He constantly compared Wu Xi to a child and even before they had s*x for the first time he chose to commit because he considered Wu Xi to be pure and innocent in comparison to him and he wanted to defile that. It was almost like Beiyuan was tolerating Wu Xi since he was a better option than returning to his original love, Helian Yi. Although, there was a gradual almost definitive point where you could tell that Beiyuan was more open to the idea of a relationship with Wu Xi and leaving the city for Nanjing.

I loved almost all the characters and I really enjoyed the extras as they added another perspective to the story. It also provided closure to Beiyuan's previous lifetimes. <<less

I really liked it.

I can’t say that the characters are lovable, most of them are awful people who does bad things for “the greater good” and don’t feel guilty about it.

But even if they aren’t the kind of characters that inspire you to be better and so on, they are pretty intresting. Tho I think as smart as Jing Qi was depicted to be, he could have find better ways to get the same reaults.

My favorite character is probably Wu Xi, I couldn’t predict his actions and he made me... more>> laugh a lot.

Yet I am a sucker for scheming, politics, court drama and that kind of stuff so I ended up getting hooked up with the plot.

I enjoyed reading it so maybe you will too if you give it a try.

Priest is really good. This is my third novel by her. The reason why I like her is that the romance is slow build so it's like reading a politics novel with romance as seasoning.

Spoiler

I read Faraway Wanderers before this one and this novel explains Zishu's actions in FW. For example, the reason why he felt so guilty about his past deeds. And I really hated that part here in this novel. Poor kid (cries). Anyway, the characters' interactions are worth reading and some are funny. Especially when the ML comes out. I thirst for more interactions between MC and ML but then this is Priest so I kind of expected minimum interactions.

It's a good story, intriguing and different. The characters are good, especially the main couple; in my opinion there are a couple of things that could be explained better or just better introduced, 'cause that war at the end was just too rushed and ... more>> Jiuxiao's death was completely ignored, I know that it will be explained in tian ya ke (at least is what I hope), but he was originally a qiye's character so I thought it would be explained here not there. Anyway, Qi Ye is worth, as all of Priest's works. <<less

I enjoyed this significantly more than I'd expected. I like Priest a lot but the summary sounded like it would put me off. I'm glad I was wrong. Jing Beiyuan has my heart now.

Translation is excellent, too.

Thank you for your translation!

Well, this one is a bit tricky. I was so excited when I started reading, but somewhere in the middle I wasn't anymore. I liked MC at first but by the end of the book not so much, same with ML and their whole relationship. I probably expected something else. Plotwise, it wasn't that bad I guess. I really really wanted to like this novel but I feel like this is the worst I read from Priest so far. Gonna keep it at 4* for now... more>> but it's more like 3, 5* for me

First off, I appreciate the translation by Chichi as I'm sure ancient Chinese prose must have been difficult. I found the novel to be a melancholic piece, with a multitude of characters intertwining with their fates. Although the ending is HE, there were some incidents in the novel that left me with an unresigned feeling. Do give this novel a read if you like the works of Priest.

hehe I would rate it a 5 except it started to lose me by around 40-ish chapters

It starts out kinda slow but it creates a sort of unique intrigue among all the characters. It starts from the MC, Jing Bei Yuan being reincarnated again. The way the CP is developed seems very natural and the characterization makes the characters seem very much real. Usually I'm a stickler for angst and drama so this story probably seemed way too tame for my tastes but its still pretty well written.

Although there's some... more>> angst between MC and Helian yi.... he's......
Spoiler

not the ML and the ML makes everything better in the end, the ML's Wuxi btw and Wuxi always treats his Jing Bei Yuan best so :))))) but there's so much fluff and its not even the type where it seems bland even, like it's all written super in-character and not like the type of fluff you've seen like 100 times already, like there's this one scene where Wuxi just waits outside JBY's door cuz they got into a "fight" and the reconcile in a very realistic and consensual way, not papapa like some other..... more questionable novels like to do........ and avoid communication.... Oh right on that note communication is honestly written so well, like there's no dumb misunderstandings that last for like 30 chapters and make ya just think, , , , , why the f*ck r they so dumb, ya none of that

[collapse]

So if ya want a nice calm, sweet story with a twinge of some drama and lots of fluff and pining, this one's for you. <<less

The only reason why I read this story is because of the translator’s recommendation when I was going to read the translation for Faraway Wanderers. This story provides some backstory for Faraway Wanderers and contains spoilers for Faraway Wanderers. Honestly, I am so glad that I read this story! I found it to be a better story than Faraway Wanderers. (This may be because I had no expectations for this story?)

It’s well-written with a tightly-woven plot. This is a more serious story (i.e. Not fluffy) with some humor... more>> that is heavy on plot, centering around the fight for the throne. The premise of the story is really interesting too: The MC Lord Seventh and the Crown Prince are to have fate for seven lifetimes. Their love in the first lifetime was thwarted by an accident. Now, on their final lifetime together, the MC gets to relive his first life again and hopes to survive.

The romance is slow moving, and the prose is beautiful. The translator Chichi does an above and beyond job here as there are a lot of references to Chinese literature. The characters and the premise are really memorable such that I think this story will stay with me for a while. A solid 5 stars. <<less

Honestly this is my favourite book of Priest's. She has this unique style of writing charaters whom simply describing as "morally gray" is not enough. It's the questioning of everything and never really coming to the answer but choosing a "way" in the end that makes her characters so very relatable. There is this view of true love where you never stop loving a person, this very view is what makes a lot of people l presume love danmei with all their backs put into it and my back is... more>> also very much invested in danmei for that reason too lol. But in this book there is something different and only now looking at some reviews and considering re-reading it do l realise what that is.

Spoiler
[collapse]

That's what l realised today... our MC is just someone who chose to love themselves <<less

So I read this almost 2 years ago but writing the review now. First of all, the only reason I read this was bc I wanted to finish the prequel of faraway wanderers.

Now, I enjoyed this but I have to admit, I skipped all the political parts bc it just wasn't interesting. Hence my rating is more around 3.5 than anything.

Interesting novel. MC, Jing Qi, is a genius strategist who is fated with Helian Yi, crown prince, for seven life times. This is his seventh reincarnation, the second time as a human and it's a rebirth to his first life. The other lives were also linked to Helian Yi but MC was non-human (animal and even a plant once).

MC is able to rebirth due to special means. He has his memories of his past lives and wants to take a different path. Due to the butterfly effect, ML, Wu Xi,... more>> comes to the capital and their super slow burn romance unfolds.

Spoiler

Wu Xi was an underworld entity in his past life. He had given up all his cultivation to allow MC to have his rebirth. Wu Xi felt responsible because his mistake indirectly led to MC's death in his first life.

Loved it but it just had something missing. There was lots to do with the plot that I felt went unexplored - loved that the political machinations were done well and I enjoyed the smartness and wholesomeness of the villains but the love story part - of the author was even attempting it - had so much potential (just imagine how much plot there is between an enemy crown prince, a crown prince, and a prince-of-another-surname triangle at a time of flux). The character settings also seemed to waver as... more>> we got closer to the end. Highly recommend though. <<less

This is a slow paced, political-heavy book with an indescribably melancholic atmosphere.

Starting with an unforgettable first chapter, the story is very well written till the very end.

It is filled with some multi-faceted, grey characters and moral dilemmas. It is thought provoking and manages to portray realistically the complexity of human beings, dealing with different themes like greed, love, justice, lust, devotion, ethics etc.

Even though the book definitely has some cons, like the romance development that I personally found a bit sudden, it is definitely a rewarding read that deserves a... more>> chance.

P.S. A big thank you to Huang ''Chichi'' Zhifeng for the fantastic fanmade translation that definitely made me enjoy the book to the fullest. <<less
