This has been a really nice ride, no constantly fumbling protagonist and the road the novel is taking is favorable to most people.

Hoping for more~

I'm actually pretty surprised with how low the rating is for this novel. It definitely has generic "isekai" tropes, such as "swords and magic, " "OP main characters, " "magic school, " etc. However, for me personally, what makes this novel so unique are the characters that are built around this "generic overused" tropes. The character building is definitely top tier for me, and while the setting is only usually a few places, it just adds on to the feeling of being part of the story. The setting is well... more>> described, which is able to paint a clear image in my mind. The places have a clear role that they play such as the demon forest, the school, the straw hut in the demon forest, etc. But of course, the main form of attraction for me was the characters and the fight scenes.

The characters have well developed personalities instead of just being "hollow" characters just there to be background noise behind the MC. The relationships all start sour, but eventually, are built into something more then just "friendship;" each character that interacts with the MC all have different pathways and stories of how they all manage to come together and become friends. It's not just the type where the MC shows off his power and then BAM, friendship established. You can clearly see the trust that forms between the characters, and in that same way becomes the thing that usually causes a rift between these bonds. (You'll understand when you read the novel.)

The fight scenes are one of the best well fleshed/thought out fights that I've seen in all forms of novels. The fact that I can picture the image of the MC evading paper-thin close claws and blades and the MC flawlessly parrying attacks and compressing qi into his katana before launching a devastating slice towards beasts that cleanly cuts into two halves goes to show the amount of detail put into it. I can feel and hear the clashes of metal, shards flying actoss the battlefield, feeling of exasperation when the blade slightly touches the mc's cheeks. The visual imagery when the MC twists from his feet to his upper body to evade attacks, and the feeling of adrenaline each time the MC keeps breaking through his limits. Some people may think it's repetitive, but for me, each fight scene is different from all the others; the MC usually uses the same techniques, but the way the author describes how the MC uses them to its fullest potential constantly forcefully keeps my attention, constructing a beautiful detailed scene into my imagination.

Some other people complain about his overpoweredness, but it's not like it was just given to him, he had to work super hard for it, to the point where basically everyday was a life or death situation for him. He always has the upper hand on all the students in the academy, because for 2 years, this mf has been fighting demon beasts that basically can kill him with one shot, as well as the constant sparring and training between his master and himself, honing his skills, techniques, experiences, and decision making to its finest. Compared to all the students in the academy who usually just spar and practice, the MC, who has a handicap of the ability suppression, is literally on the verge of death and exposed to extremely high levels of danger every single day.

I hope that I managed to get some people's interest into reading the novel, because for me, this is a top tier novel. Even if you feel like a particular part of the story is boring or cringe, I personally think it's worth it to keep reading onwards to see how the MC will move on; its a slow race, it takes a while but the satisfaction after he makes it is unworldly.

Major spoilers ahead: just me ranting about people complaining over dumb shit.

It seems like people are complaining about how the MC is "obsessed" over Lisa, the ex-girlfriend that dumped him. But in my opinion, it's quite justified; losing that trust/love between each other when you've basically spent your entire life with them is heartbreaking.

"Bro, omg just get over it, it's not hard." Remarks like this just doesn't make any sense. Some people have little attachment to their loved ones, and some other times, it's the other way around, and if it's the latter, it's fcking difficult to "just" move on.

I do have to admit, the fact the MC somehow managed to kill a dragon is kinda bs. But it is what it is. MC just managed to make a miracle. Some other people also describe the MC as some "undecidesive" "p**sy" "overpowered" MC. But just like before, I personally think it's justified. For one, his weakness to make a choice usually makes sense. For example, the time when he wasn't sure if he wanted to unleash his chains to save somia. People don't seem to understand that the dragon living inside him is literally trying to tear his soul apart and kill everybody. Maybe people just think that he should just do it and deal with it later, which clearly shows that they think the MC will just be able to solve it via plot Armour. (While him killing the dragon is due to plot Armour, the fact that supposedly he'd be able to solve all problems just based on plot Armour is f*cking ret*rded.) <<less

I've read the manga version and came here. There are quite many differences between the two but what I like is that MC's depression and suicidal tendencies seem real. Though him throwing away everything for his ex-lover might seem unreal, the constant bullying and ostracization is the main cause of MC's social anxiety and I can relate to that. The way the rumours just destroy your social life is also true and him using training as a coping mechanism is quite well fit. I have gotten too obsessed myself in... more>> my coping mechanisms to keep away the dark thoughts so that's also quite realistic.

I do have to admit that MC is a Gary Stu and is a bit too forgiving and good natured but I think that it isn't that bad because his kindness amidst all that shows his integrity.

Of course some of the drama between the MC and his ex is cringe but let me tell you that people don't listen to you and believe their own version of the truth. So while I do think it's ridiculous that the ex didn't listen to him. The friends leaving him part I can definitely relate cause of personal experience.

I also like that this has realistic character development and relationships.

All in all I would rate this story a 3.5 because it has a good portrayal of depression. Let's see if it maintains its quality later.

I have rated it such because I personally relate to MC's experience kind of so there's definitely a personal bias. <<less

This novel is soo disappointing, first of all, the author is ret*rded, not as an insult but reality.... more>> This shitty novel clearly tells how the school use the meritocratic system, and at first the MC was weak as a loli, but afterwards he can release his ability suppresion and be as strong as a dragonslayer, but for some ret*rded reason the MC won't use that ability, except when no one is around. And yes, even though his best friend betrayed him and framed him, it was not his fault, because that pu*sy bit*h MC deserved it. You know that even the most miserable and smallest people have a little bit of pride or MAN'S PRIDE, but no, he doesn't have even a little bit of pride, he victimize himself, and likes to feel as a tragic character, being bullied, insulted, and even when someone is hurting his pride, he has a extasis face (fuking masochist), and when he knew that his best friend betrayed him, he didn't do shit. /Spoiler] There's still more shitty things that he did, but im already tilted after reading this shit. <<less

This story takes a lot of patience as you have to put up with the drama, the suffering, and the struggle MC goes through. The early volumes may be a drag and may not make much sense but I guarantee the satisfaction that follows will be worth it. The second arc is the best part of this novel and the conclusion the MC arrives at is hype. However, the novel ends too soon and the ending doesn't have enough closure for a lot of characters. In conclusion, this novel is... more>> an unpolished gem but a good story and if you want a polished one, you should probably check out the LN version which is also starting to diverge little by little from this one. The early plot makes more sense for the LN version.

Heavy-handed and repetitive drama, side characters have but a brief moment to shine when they are introduced, then they dissolve in a faceless "Friends" blob. This blob moves as one, thinks as one and ultimately serves a role of being a background flavor, talking only in times when MC needs emotional support during the fight.

Also, I need to mention how repetitive the writing is.

It is very repetitive.

... more>> Like, super-mega repetitive.

Repet...

You get the idea.

I can't believe it, but this drama about "MC being falsely accused of cheating" introduces harem undertones not far into the story. If this is not a fatal flaw, I don't know what is.

It might seem like I hate it, but actually I liked it a lot in the early parts and these positive emotions still hold up against all the bad things. I hope it gets better? Lol no, no way. I only hope that manga (which is very good by the way) does better. <<less

never get too attached to mc's life or u will suffer like me. Plot-intresting for me, mc-hmm good, powerful, mentally weak (even I got mentally weakly and could hear my heart beat every time lisa comes, seriously I just wish him to kick his childhood friend kim or something and get it back with lisa its too painful). Not a fan of tragedy due to my weak mental and I get too caught up with their life but still cant leave the novel wish he could be with lisa I... more>> dont need anything else at least make MC get rid of kim and become friends with lisa its too painful to handle. This has been one hell of a rollercoaster story. The story is a passive one in the sense that instead of the MC actively trying to change things, he more or less let things happen first and then just deal with it. Whether or not that fits through one's taste is dependent on the reader.

As for those wandering about what happens between MC and his childhood friend

Spoiler

And yes, they do reconcile however, it's on a bittersweet note. Was it the best way for them to reconcile? Personally, I don't think so, but if asked, then it fits rather well into the story narrative.

In a more specific sense, they split up at the moment of reconciliation. She is thinking about going back home to recollect herself and the end between them went on something like this:

"With that feeling in mind, she turns her back on Him as he's leaving.

The road of the two breaks up here.

But she was content with that. The feelings left by a loved one are firmly in the back of her chest.

With that feeling in her heart, She's certain she'll meet him someday, and by then, is likewise strong enough to stand by his side.

At the end, the red-haired girl took a new step, feeling the teardrops spilling from her eyes.

[collapse]

P.S. I'm just in the mid part of Ch/Vol 7, and I'm unsure if they do meet again sometime soon, but I don't think they will anytime soon considering the phrasing of their parting. <<less

I think this is the first time some of these tropes have EVER been pulled off successfully in a LN.

The characters all seem to act their ages. The old GF, harem candidates and best friend all seem like they could be real people. I understood and sympathized with the old GF.

Power suppression is done tastefully too. He has clear reasons and doubts to not use his power and they make sense. His thought process is very logical and understandable (even if based somewhat on emotions)

My only issue is the... more>> plot is a passive one, concerning our MC's mental/emotional state. Meaning that he waits for events to happen and then experiences growth. There isn't a clear progression or ultimate goal to aim for (but not quite SoL)

Massive Romance spoilers:

Spoiler

So nearly 100 chapters in and we still haven't resolved the Old GF conflict. Basically the GF was tricked by their other male friend from their home town. He used a disguise ability to convince the GF the MC was cheating and steal her. GF's new female friend was also convinced which made it easy to isolate and convince her. A 16~ with a broken heart is ofc going to have long standing issues with the MC when conditioned to absolutely hate him.

However. WHO THE f*ck, actually cares about cheating in this massive school. Even if she is super popular your average student/teacher shouldn't care. Especially in a school that is an ultra-competitive meritocracy.

Okay, let's get serious:

This novel is, in a way, a let down. The cringiness is very high. Way too high, even. But I did not think it's a waste of time reading this. The story itself is quite enjoyable and character's conversation feels humane to me. Maybe quite a few of you guys came here after reading the manga version so just ignore my ramblings but allow me to say this: the MC's ex is practically a s*upid who*e to me. How in the actual f*ck did she choose to... more>> believe some friend of her over her own boyfriend which is also her own childhood friend? Is she ret*rded? Fine, I know she was fooled, but why did she not suspect even a thing others said? Is she a 3rd grader or what? MC's life is practically ruined by those people. Sure, fine, typical, but at least decently written.

And the MC? He's broken alright, however, has had some personality development but a bit too little. To be honest, hope he moves on someday and just forget about that childhood friend of his but what can I say, he's a simp. <<less

so many people recommended this novel after the manga had end so I give it a try. I keep reading this sh*t till CH7 in the hope that it would getting better later and end up in disappointment.

story - MC fighting --> serious injury and go to hospital --> his friend go to visited him and tell him how reckless he was --> MC have a nightmare --> his friend worried about him --> MC feel anxious about every thing (big or small) --> MC don't wanna hurt his friend... more>> --> MC fighting --> repeat this vicious cycle
the only salvation is the back story of Tiamat very interesting

romance - basically non existence. I don't wanna insulted the author but I think he should get a love life or atleast research about them
the MC and Iris - *iris done something even just talking normally* and the MC = *panic* and keep stuttering his word like a little b*tch, THE END, and keep repeating this type of scene over and over again (of course nothing that can be called romantic have happened so far). Despite he had date his ex-lover who is considered to be the most beautiful women in town for a very longgggg time
Mars and Tima - *Tima crying* / Mars *PANIC* THE END! For f*ck sake!

comedy - basically non existence (even couting Feo and the cat girl)

fight - MC keep telling himself that he almost all out of Ki --> keep using it --> and telling himself again

character development for the f*cking entire story (till CH7)
the MC - before = I FeEL AnXiouS (every f*cking chapter), I don't wanna hurt my friend (LOL)
after Lisa arc = I won't run away from anything again, but still act like a little bit*h despite he's the f*cking dragon king slayer and already proved to everyone in the school that he is the strongest of all of them (his own power and did not released the dragon power) I don't know if the author know about self-confident or not
Iris - mY ChEsT HuRT
Somnia - e-hehehe (ノ≧ڡ≦)
Mars - I am so weak
Tima - Ai (Iris) , Mars-kun ●﹏●
Shiina (elf girl) - wHaT iS THIs FeELIng

the role of the MC's friend - they have only 2 jobs for the entire story
1. Personal ambulance car for MC to used. When the MC fight end and he collapsed (every single time), they carried him to the hospital and nursing him
2. Keep telling the MC how reckless he was and the MC end up like a rag again and again

they keep repeating this 2 jobs till the present. This is all these people have done in this story by far <<less

If you've somehow started reading this, read until chapter 7. C6p24 is the peak of this series and is worth it.

It started off really good, first 3 chapters were interesting to read. It went downhill during c4, c5. Tr*sh pacing, shitty side stories and something that should've happened before c4 was stretched to c7.

characters were okayish. Some were well written and others were straight up generic 'too good to be true' characters. MC is a ret*rd and a lot of stuff makes no sense. He can defeat strongest dragon but... more>> is last in his class? Cringe.

romance was just okay.

I recommend reading manga instead of the WN. <<less

This novel is in desperate need of an editor.

Other than that, the plot is fine, and characters decent. The world building is a bit wonky, but I'll just pass that off as something that was lost in translation.

3/5. REALLY needs an editor.

Well, story wise this is great. It has depth to it, the depression and all those negativity seems real. The character development is also great, the only thing I didnt like is how it became a harem later on.

At the start, the one nasty rumor that destroyed his social life is him playing with many girls. So when it became a harem its just cheapen the whole thing for me.

i was hoping he get a good girl, just that one girl that can return all his love and his hard... more>> work. But hey, japan and harems cliches was almost never separated so, its a 3/5 for me. A for effort tho, the start to mid was hella good im not kidding. <<less

The MC although kind of bit your "weak willed, and s*upid" kind, is understandable. I certainly do what he does if I got into his position.

MC deus ex'd for his op ability, there were better ways to make it happen but it was braindead. MC has a constant problem of not confronting his problems. This drags on forever making to a long unnecessary drama, fixes at end of c5. There are ways to make a deprecative MC but the author fails to do it right. Problem is the other people his group become indecisive about confronting him for months avoiding the problem just like the MC. Story would be better without the harem as well... more>> feels unnecessary. MC is also way to forgiving to what others done to him making a pushover.

Fights are crowded with too many named characters so the writing makes it seem like people are standing still doing nothing until they randomly pop up for 1 attack. An 11 year old girl is all coming along to fights for whatever reason. During any team fights he outshines his friends even rank A's while having ability suppression. His ability suppression makes him 10th rank but he fights like a high A class fighter, might as well as get rid of the plot point when he's able to match A rank fighters even with ability suppression. <<less

a huge letdown for me bcs many people said in manga that this is good

the annyoing this author seem keep delaying MC suffer

the story just revolved on nozomu running away from his real problem even though he already promised to his teacher he will get rid that, I get it if not for like now 6 volume on running away again and again if the suffering he got just last for maybe 3 or 4 volume I get it and can move... more>> on for next thing

Spoiler

but this MC is so simp he cant forget the ex that already mad at him without MC single time explaining to her

i mean dude she is not worth keeping if she didnt want to talk the problem with you and just trust her so called friend and never single time research the truth by herself

The story kinda too far-fetched.. Cringey af.. You know this was fiction from how the author spun the story, it feels kinda forced so just kinda hard to immerse.. Apart from that, I guess the flow kinda decent and had nice tension going on like the battle atmosphere.

Pros

  • The premise and story building was pretty good
  • Good monologues and insight to situations from different characters
  • Many interesting characters
Cons

  • MC is bullied to the point where it's tilting to read his victimization because of his reaction to it
  • MC is beta because
    Spoiler

he could solve all his problems by communicating, but thinks he doesn't deserve help from others. He is actually so broken mentally that it's hard to read the novel at this slow pace.

    [collapse]
  • Pacing is slow - sometimes this is okay, but going through an entire arc and the MC doesn't grow makes it really depressing. Example: MC saves friend; MC obtains more guilt for saving lives
Prediction

Spoiler

My guess is one of the MC's friends will be put into a very unsavory situation and the readers will have to cope with it until the MC is pushed to the very edge for a volume climax - all for 'growth' and 'trauma'. This would be fun to read if the MC's actions were written more logically.

[collapse]

TL;DR

If you are familiar with how beta japanese characters are sometimes, then maybe you can get through this.
