My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting

Qiao Shao, who worked hard to stay up all night and study, was first in class — if you count from the bottom.

He Shen, who was able to get a perfect score even when he slept all day, in a rare display of kindness, bought a bottle of drink to comfort his s*upid seatmate.

Then he saw the messages popping up on Qiao Shao’s phone—

Dad: Don’t panic, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Dad just ordered a new sports car for you.

Granddad: Grandson, there’s no need to hurry. It’s alright even if you didn’t do well in your exam. Granddad bought a new yacht for you, come and take a break.

Grandpa: Grandson, don’t cry, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Grandpa’s billions-worth of properties are all yours.

With a blank expression, He Shen threw his 2.5 Yuan worth bottle of drink into the tr*sh.

Hold your horses! Comfort?

This was way better than I expected!!
I thought it would be a fun and light read. It was fun, but the story was actually quite interesting and intense. I even cried a little when they found out the truth about their past 😭. Although that part was sad and made me feel a little apprehensive, the rest of the novel was angst-free. A really sweet hurt-comfort love story. Totally recommend this one 💗

Don’t let the dead links message discourage you from reading— it’s still readily available on Chrysanthemum Garden, and it is well worth the read!

I personally don’t tend to read long reviews, so I’ll try keep this short, but when I say this I really mean it: this is one of the all time best BL novels I have ever read.

The characters, plot, writing, etc.. Everything about this is absolutely incredible and I find myself incredibly inspired as a writer every time I decide to re-read it, and I will forever... more>> be the biggest fan.

This novel touches on so many important, unique, and emotional subjects, and every scene is tackled incredibly well. The emotions the writing evokes within each moment are so on point it has me ready to kneel & call the author laoshi to beg for even a sliver of her writing ability.

As a reader, I found myself immediately attached to the unique and realistic characters from the very first read through, and even many times later I still manage to get caught up in the novels flow and accidentally stay up way too late re-reading.

The novel is also incredibly well translated, and the beauty and complexity of the story is still evident despite it being a translation. It’s evident that the translator put a lot of effort into the translation, and I’m grateful to the translator for giving us foreign readers a chance to experience this novel because MLT-ing it just doesn’t work ;;

I would ramble more about the actual plot but A) this is too long already, & B) I don’t want to spoil it, because it really would never hit the same as actually reading the novel.

So, if you’re a fan of BL, a fan of romance, or just a fan of literature in general— this novel is a beautiful work everyone should read at least once. <<less

I'm not sure what I expected from the novel based on the summary, but it gave me pleasant surprises with every chapter.

MC is my baby boi and the most adorable MC I've ever encountered. His characterization makes him someone you really want to care for, but also want to root for his development and transition to adulthood. I legitimately felt like a 3rd grandfather wanting to dote on him.

The ML and MC interactions were also adorable and pretty realistic at how soft it started before snowballing to lots of affecting... more>> before their confession.

But the creme de la creme of the novel is how amazing the side characters and roommates are. Even though they are secondary character, a lot of work was put into making them have unique traits that mesh well into the plot. I kept laughing at their interactions and seeing friends and classmates just joshing around. It's these moments that fill in the world of the novel and kinda highlight that what the MC and ML have is special and and exists only for themselves.

Highly recommend the novel. This is definitely going to be a reread for me. <<less

Just an ordinary and dull novel. No chemistry between the MC and ML. They overemphasized the MC like 'he looks like a girl', 'if he was a girl', I love effeminate boys but the how they describe it just straight exaggeration. It seems like im reading a straight novel not a BL. They should jusy made this straight novel then. The only character I really felt like is the bestfriend Chen Su. But disappointed cus the author didn't really give him justice, his side seems rushed and there's an ambiguous... more>> side couples, they also didn't given enough justice. The main story should just ended earlier than 100 and just give the remaining chapter to the others. <<less

tbh I was not expecting anything from this novel BUT! The experience this novel gave me is worth mentioning here.

so when I first start reading it I thought the MC is soft cute naive and easy to bully shou but he's not !! I thought ML is super op and that it was too much but again its not!!

the things and behavior they show absolutely have reasons behind them. I would like to say to those who haven't finished the novel and just reviewing it half way is wrong, if... more>> you want to then atleast you should read full story (i was like that too ozzzz)

anyway lets move on to the characters, besides MC and ml, other side characters have their persona. And I absolutely like grandpa, grandad and da qiao.

so its a novel thats worth reading !! <<less

Not bad! Very fluffy and cute.

Tbh I like those type of story where the MC or ML has some type of past trauma then the other party helps them to get over it and stuff. Super heartwarming hehe.

Overall the plot was good and the romance was awesome. Not too fast and not too slow!! Super loving too :)

Highly recommended for those that likes to read cute novels ~

Super sweet and fluffy story. In general I really like stories about mutual healing and finding new family and friends and this novel is just like that.

I loved MC and ML. MC has really awful past which affected him terribly and caused psychological problems, ML is genius but has bad family situation. Apart them there are really cute and nice side characters I loved every member of MC family. MC and ML friends are very good too despite some of them having huge brain hole.

I also like that author showed... more>> how parents can affect their children and how important their love and support is. Some characters in this novel have really difficult relationship with their parents and are affected greatly.

In spite of fact that novel includes some dark themes like abduction, psychological problems, bullying and etc it is really light read and full of dog food (mostly because of ML and his crazy remarks, he just loves to tease MC). There are moments that will make you laugh to, especially ones that involve MC father.

I wouldn't say that this novel doesn't have any flaws, but all in all it is really nice story worth reading. <<less

A very sweet and lighthearted school novel. It has some angsty/sad moments because of the MC‘s and ML‘s past, but everything gets resolved in the end. Their relationship is beautiful and smooth sailing. All the side characters are likeable and funny (especially MC‘s family). I read it in one go!

ONE OF THE BEST SCHOOL RELATED NOVEL I'VE READ SO FAR!!

The misunderstandings, the ML's antics, the fluff, the slow burn romance that is definitely worth it, how the characters dealt with their psychological problems and most of all the familial love especially maternal love made this so special to my heart. I was always laughing in the first part and then comes the second part where the past unfolds which is reaaaalllyyy bittersweet because for one it really hurts to see their suffering because of trauma and two it's really... more>> nice to see them together with friends and family (MC's side) to deal with it.

*sigh* All throughout the story I feel like I'm watching my own children. I cheer for them, I cried for them and I was so happy for them.

This is definitely a must read!!! And this needs a higher rating!! <<less

In this novel, all of the important characters are either currently hurting or still in the process of healing but what matters is that they aren’t alone anymore because as the story progressed, they found people whom they can depend on when they are in their lowest and most painful times. I will always love this story. I realized a lot and I’ll read this over and over again.

I've finished reading this a month ago but I just want to put my review here to encourage everyone to read it... more>> since it's really good. The pace when I read this novel is good. It's simple yet deep and I loved it very much! I saw negative comments about MC and I disagree. I mean, I didn't see anything bad at him. Yes, he can be judgmental at times (as far as I can remember) but given his past?? I can't remember any major negative impact that resulted from him being judgmental. Besides, it's kinda nice to see flawed characters. They feel more human than those almost perfect ones.

Here's my review (actually me recounting the plot so it contains MAJOR SPOILERS. BEWARE!)

Spoiler

This novel is one of the best novels I’ve read and it also became one of my favorites. The main character, Qiao Shao, is a cute and kind boy who had gone through a traumatic experience in the past. He was abducted by a mentally ill lady and was locked up in a room inside a parking lot for an entire year and was fed foods that will cause you to vomit because what do you expect from a lady who’s not in her right mind? Qiao Shao was chained and was alone with the lady. Imagine how creepy and terrifying that is. I will certainly go insane if I was in that situation, what more is there for Qiao Shao who is only a kid at that time? After a year of staying in that room, the lady died and Qiao Shao freed himself and went back to his family’s company surprising everyone. Of course, the poor child developed a trauma that didn’t only affect him mentally but also manifested physically and socially. Sometime later, his mother died and it became a huge impact on Qiao Shao. His father, Zongmin, is also in no healthy state. His son was gone for an entire year then suddenly came back looking so devastated. Not only that but his cherished wife passed away. Imagine the pain he has to carry and still be able to appear strong and all for his son and his company. Good thing is that Qiao Shao met He Shen, our male lead. He Shen’s past is also very sad. His mother was just a trophy for the Xie family to use and display. She then brought a genius and gifted child to the world which is He Shen. Due to him being exceptionally intellectual, his grandfather expected him to perform only the best and thus created a robot—a machine. He was told that if he wants to protect his mother, then he should do what his grandfather wants. A cruel man indeed. Both of the main character’s childhood might be full of scars and bittersweet memories but fortunately, fate decided to make them happy and thus their love story begins. The side characters were also lovely and are experiencing problems of their own.

This is a wholesome school life + misuderstandings + sweet love + doting family + funny mess of a novel.

A definite reread novel in my opinion. And I didn't have a lot of notes, so its an breeze to read, I remember feeling relaxed but not bored. Its a slice of life kind of novel, not really grounded in reality but has healing effect on the readers when you get past the school boy first love romance and deal with life and trauma.

I just love family love.

Not really my cup of tea, but not so horrible that I didn't want to finish it, because I wanted to find out what would happen... however, after finding out, it was rather anticlimactic and unsatisfying.

The tone and pacing in this book are really strange to me. For the tone, it has such a light, frivolous, and comedic tone, but then it is also extremely over-the-top dramatic. The MC and ML both have huge past trauma and are still being affected by it, but the narration tone is like... lalala,... more>> everything is so happy and funny, but wait let's just drop in a line out of the blue to attempt to shock you and make you weep but instead is just awkward and out of place.

For the pacing, it was dragging out so long, and it was very apparent that the author was just trying to add more content to generate more views (they even basically implied that in the author comments on some of the chapters). Hints kept being dropped but without revealing the whole picture of what happened in the past, so I kept reading, wanting to find out. Then after it finally was all revealed, the characters had one big cry, and then everything was fine and dandy because the power of love heals all. I felt like the reveal and resolution could have been way more in depth, while the leading up and hinting could have been much shorter.

In terms of the side characters, they are mildly interesting but failed to live up to their potential as characters. In other words, the author didn't give us enough about the side characters to make reading about them worthwhile. Yes, each character did have personality, a backstory, and insecurities, but all of them had all their problems solved so quickly and suddenly that it felt like such a letdown. Basically the solution all the side characters' problems was, "I suddenly realized that I have just had the wrong mindset about my whole life, but now that I have realized this I can be at peace with my past demons, " without very much actually happening to cause this realization.

I think the main draw for someone in reading this would be for the fluff. It's very cute and fluffy, which is not really my thing if there aren't a solid plot and literary devices etc. to back it up, but I can see how someone who likes fluff would really enjoy this story. <<less

This is so sweet that my teeth are having cavities right now. All of the character are likeable and funny.

Sometimes, you don't realize the exact moment when you fall in love. You will just one day open your eyes and say, "ah, this person, I really like!".

The only rant I have is that after Qiao Shao recovered his memories, it is as if he already forgot all his traumas. I'm happy for him but it was not easy to just accept it just because you're older compared to that time you encountered the trauma. It was supposed to be gradual but I guess this works too, it didn't really matter. Just kind of bothered me a bit.

Father Qiao also needs to focus on his mental health now. He needs to face the present. : (I hate this part, I'm kind of hurt that they all lost someone special.

It's is a light hearted story. Good for a light comfort novel, where you're served quite a bit of dog food. But it's not too cloying.

Doesn't have much of a plot, but isn't boring. Alas, which story doesn't have has it's own twists and turns. This also has it's own.

Need something light, engaging but also poignant at times to keep things grounded? Here’s one. Some horrifying things do happen in the characters’ pasts, but the pace and tone mean that the knife isn’t plunged in too deeply. Has some saccharine sweet moments. Also has some unexpectedly deep thoughts on how to overcome situations beyond your control. The character types are familiar but work well.

4.8/5 ☆ Slice of Life. This novel fills my heart with so much feels — an endearing read that really makes the characters feel so real and human. No angst, a very light and feel-good read! I love how the MC and ML suit each other so much and how they go & grow through what they go through <3 Funny, fluffy and would def recommend~ (pls pls pls read it! The summary undermines the beauty of the overall novel QAQ) A very satisfying read with characters you grow fond... more>> of, both the MC and ML actually became two of my faves out of all the other novels I’ve read!
