Fake Slackers

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

After class placements were decided, the school’s two infamous ‘problem youths’ not only shared the same class, but the same desk.

They’re clearly good at studies, but pretend to be slackers. Fakers from head to toe who just keep walking farther down the path of their performance.

Heard through the grapevine about the two big brothers who always fight over the last place in class.

Basically, this is a serious comedy. About the little matters of growing up.

This story is basically all about daily school life. It has a refreshing vibe to it. This is a first slice of life I've read, not regretting it a bit. Author has has done a great job by both highlighting the real life instances and the relationship development between the protagonists.

It's simplistic yet light hearted approach towards eveyday situation is refreshing.I liked the protagonist and the love interest's interactions and their relationship development.

The side characters appear almost at every paragraph. Which I found a bit irritating.

The ML is a gentle... more>> character, and MC's a fierce and silent one. Both are badass. <<less

ah, how do I begin to explain how much I loved this novel.

  1. The characters. Our protagonists are high schoolers 17 and 19 years old when we meet them, and they actually feel their age, even if they're more mature than their peers, they're still youngsters learning about life, making mischief and just being lost without knowing what they're gonna do with their lives. Another important detail is that this also applies to the rest of the class 3, they're so freaking adorable!
  2. Their relationship. As I said, they're very young, and this is their first love, they're learning how to treat each other but they also show that awkwardness of the first, the excitement, all those overwhelming feelings of being on your first romantic relationship are there, which in a way is a very innocent situation, I just feel very proud of them. They also grow together and support each other, they fight, they bicker, but they also talk and listen when they need to solve a problem.
  3. The plot. It was so attractive to me, two geniuses faking being slackers? Oof, bring it on! And it was cute, but I feel it was solved too fast, I would've loved a bit more of conflict and spicy stuff, this doesn't mean it's bad, not at all, it was a very light reading, and I enjoyed it.
So yes, in my opinion, there were minimal details that were lacking but so minimal that I don't care and give it 5 stars just for the sole reason that reading He Zhao and Xie Yu being in love made me so happy and fulfilling, so much fluffiness and zero angst. AND THE EXTRAS, JFC, I CRY!!!! THEY'RE MARRIED!!!!

Heum... stopping at 83 currently because I want to binge read it later, but so far I LOVE the characterization, the pacing is sometime too slow but it is a slice of life and I do love the characters and their relationship dynamic so much.

So often in danmei you have either a memorable MC or a memorable ML, it's not hard for me to count the danmeis where the main couple are both someone you root for, related too and get equally attached to both but so far, I LOVE... more>> THEM BOTH EQUALLY?!?

Also all the characters in this novel feel alive, not just the main CP, but even the side characters felt real instead of plot inducing, and you just ended up in love with all of them, and I say it, even though the plot is slow, it's very reminiscing and nostalgic for your high school days, I'm really looking forward to finish reading it!

[Edit COMPLETE]

finish it and it is the one of the best modern danmei I read, I definitely recommend this if you're someone like me who's never get bored of reading campus romance, I love the slight power play between both of them and MC calling ML 'ge' whenever it serve him is some grinning inducing shit, like I wish it was a bit more spicy but it is a high school romance and that's what fanfiction are for

i really love our MC though, I think he made me realize how much I actually adore his type, more a kuudere than anything else, he's a cool-headed and calm MC but love teasing, silent but will fight u if u insult his loved ones and ML is god, attractive so so attractive, sorta of a dumbass with no taste (relatable) but a very smooth and genius one? lol! the plot doesn't really have that kind of climax but I guess it come from being a slice of life and it is fun and wonderful! definitely memorable to a fault! <<less

When you're pretending to be a slacker and your boyfriend is also a slacker so now you're worried your boyfriend will grow up to become a truck driver except he's actually pretending to be a slacker and is also worried you'll grow up to become a truck driver.

I love this. Fake Slackers is like eating cold ice cream on a hot day. Seriously, this novel put a smile on my face and left a hole in my heart when I finished it. This is one of the few novels I... more>> wouldn't mind rereading, and for good reason. If you like slice-of-life, fluffy relationships, and school-life plot, why haven't you read this yet? <<less

Where can I find the extra chapters? I don’t know what happened to the step brother and step father.

I enjoyed this novel so much. The author took their time to establish each characterization, it made the confession scene worth it.

This is a fantastic novel, very lighthearted and sweet. Although it contains some sad elements, I must admit that I expected this novel to be darker and sadder, but it was still enjoyable.

This is a story about two genius students competing for first place, that is, first place at the bottom. They both have their own reasons for doing this, which will be explained further in later chapters.

The main character is quiet and cold, whereas the male lead is outgoing and affable. I adore their dynamic and chemistry; they perfectly... more>> embody the 'grumpy × sunshine' trope.

All of the characters in this are hilarious, and they help to lift the mood significantly. This story captures the essence of youth in high school students and their struggle to enter the real world.

This story is primarily about high school, though I honestly thought and wished that the personal lives of the main character and male lead would be included and discussed more.

I love how close the class became; you can tell the difference between their interactions in the first few chapters and the last few.

Overall, a fun and cute novel that would be great for some healing. The pace is also reasonable, neither too fast nor too slow, and the developments feel natural in some ways.

Though if I had one criticism of this novel, it would be that the transition between POVs and scenes can be quite confusing; this is a multi-POV novel where you can read other characters' thoughts, so you have to pay close attention when reading because you might get lost when it switches. <<less

Adorable. That is probably the best way to describe this. It may be because I just completed high school too, but I could bond with the characters and the feel of this novel way more than I usually do with other novels. A very simple and sweet story, not deep or heavy, easy to read. It's one of those novels I'd read just to feel happy on a bad day.

The Plot:

It's not supposed to be heavy or deep, and it really doesn't need to be. I love it the way... more>> it is. It's so simple and cute, the development and pacing is just perfect. It doesn't feel dragging or too long. Really really love it.

The Characters:

I love them. I love all the characters. Everything is so high school kids-ish I love it. They're dumb, they're smart, they're struggling, they're happy. Very very well portrayed. Even the pressure of entrance exams is so on point, it is such a huge struggle, and the pressure makes us all break down so many times. Really really really well written characters. The side characters all have their own characteristics and don't just exist to get the CP together.

Relationships:

I don't usually make a different section for this, but bear with me I really need to talk about this. The bond between the CP is amazing, I don't even need to talk about it. There's no excessive drama, no big confessions. They bonded together slowly over time, and fell in love. So beautifully written.

The relationship between the MC and his mother, and all the other people from Black Water Street is also written very beautifully. The bond they form even though all of them are so different from each other is so lovely.

Last but not the least, the bond between the classmates is probably the best written here. I love how all of them warm up to the two "tyrants" of the school,
Spoiler

even going as far as to try and help the CP hide their relationship from others. It's hilarious really.

[collapse]
It is just beautiful watching them all go from silly second year kids to actually a bit more mature adults while still being a little goofy and mischievous. Really just read it for their friendship.

TL;DR:

Read it please, it's adorable. Simple, cute, makes your heart warm up. Give it a try! <<less

It's pretty good. Not much fighting or other drama. The friendship, class relationship and teachers is also very nice, very heart warming. It kind of reminds me of reborn with an old enemy on the day of our marriage because of that part.

I like how MC and ML are straightforward with their feelings. Their love is so very cute and did u know, they got married in the extra!!!!! (Audio drama covers half of 1-3 extra, extra 1-3 novel u need to pay, 4 is available if u search for... more>> it hard enough)

The time they stopped being slackers was so amazing I kept having butterflies. It was so exciting to read that part. It leaves u wanting for more sigh. Im kinda sad it ended so fast. <<less

To be honest, there were many times I want to drop this novel. The pace is too slow at the beginning. However, this hillarious ML made me want to stick around. He cracks me up with his self confidence. Even the teachers could not help but find him amusing despite his bad grades. And when he got together with MC, what else, they are just cutest. I love all their banters and flirting. With ML, I found MC got more interesting. Don't forget their classmates. Haha, they are so loyal... more>> to backup the two of them. But, there are things that I wish the writer could do more:

Spoiler

The conclusion with MC and ML's stop being fake slackers is kinda... flat. I thought it will be more emotional and I get it. Maybe the writer didn't want to drag it. But I think it could be done much better than that.

No further details for ML's family??? But ML obviously missed his sister.

OKay okay okay, this novel is great! 10/10 I love it (I might have hit 4/5 by accident, but I mean 5/5). Honestly I don't usually read books that have much to do with reality, but this one is great. I love our MC Xie Yu and our ML He Zhao so much. They are the best. All the side characters are so great and loveable too. The story is quite simple but very interesting and fun. I obviously wish it was a little longer and went more into detail... more>> of their later lives, but I did have a good ole time trying to find the extras (I think I found them), and glimpsing their future lives. The novel is great!

It's about our two little tyrant slackers Xie Yu and He Zhao. They both have suffered through something (no spoilers here) and are hiding their abilities. Their reasons for hiding their genius intelligence were quite well done and I can really see someone doing something like that, especially with their personalities. They're great, gotta love them. The two both act occasionally like tyrants, and can 100% be terrifying if they so choose, but they aren't usually like that. I love how everyone in class 3 came to love them. I just really like all the character dynamics. Everything is great! I have very little to complain about. I mean I wish the author went a little more in depth at settling the step brother issue, and I wanted to meet He Zhao's dad. I mean a lot of the stuff with He Zhao seemed to be resolved more simply and wasn't completely brought into light. I also wish we got a little more content after the MC and ML revealed themselves, the story ended a little quickly, but almost everything was brought to a close.

The story!!!! The story was great. It is well written, the concept of having 2 geniuses act like idiots for half the story is great. And they're so good at it too. After ML and MC figure each other out, ML corrects MC occasionally and he's like, no don't take out the homework we "didn't do." Honestly it is hilarious. They are actually very believably dumb. I love it. And I like their attitudes, how even when people know they are smart, they still don't care. Haha, this novel is a pretty quick read. I read it in 3 or 4 days, but I probably spent all my free time reading.... Anyways the story is very amusing. It is quite light hearted and although some things about the MC and ML make you want to cry and give them a hug, they aren't really glorified and I think they are well written. I like how the author doesn't dwell on it, so it really fits into the story. Every few chapters, something new is happening at school so it doesn't get boring. Although some of the mentions of time and what not don't completely match up, but I also don't like in Asia, so I don't know what school schedules are like for them. But the story is great 10/10.

Side Characters!!!!! They aren't forgotten. They don't always play a huge role, but they are quite funny and they are often involved in the story. I also like their dynamic. It is great. Sometimes I wish Mr Study Rep learned of the Question King's Gods identities. I also wish they did more with the App and the *spoiler.* But it was still great. I also really like the main characters. Their personalities fit quite well together, I don't really want to explain though. The two have a good and healthy dynamic. They are so cute. He Zhao is so nice, I love his ego. He is so confident and egotistical and friendly, how can we not love this talkative bastard. Xie Yu, our ice princess, is great too. I like how the author didn't overdo his icy persona. He can be flirty if he wants to be. He can be an arse, he can be funny, and he is quite nice (albeit silently). They're great. I also like how Xie Yu's personality is explained *thumbs up*.

Uh ROMANCE. The romance is great. MC and ML were buddies pretty quickly on in the story, I mean Xie Yu looked like he was going to beat the ML to death half the time, but he didn't mean it. It's also really funny how Xie Yu still fights He Zhao even after they start dating. They aren't super touchy feely all the time and aren't like, cry my boyfriend isn't here. They love each other, but they aren't 100% dependent on them. They have a very healthy highschool relationship. It is quite the realistic way to write a highschool romance, even checking if the other person is serious about it first. And they aren't dramatic and showy about it. They are like romantic best buds. And they even stay together later in life (you'll find it in the extras, if you can find em, but I won't continue to spoil). They even wait till Xie Yu is of age to do.... yeah. They're so cute, they kiss sometimes and hold hands and aren't obnoxiously sticky. I like how the way their love for each other is written. Although, I am personally not someone to get into relationships, especially when you're in highschool, but Xie Yu and He Zhao's relationship is quite realistic. I love He Zhao's cheesiness and his confidence in it and how Xie Yu thinks he's an idiot (no matter what), but still loves him. I LOVE HOW THE AUTHOR DOESN'T EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY LOVE EACH OTHER AND WE JUST KINDA GET IT!!!!!!!!! I also like how they are willing to do anything for each other. When they still thought the other was s*upid, they both wanted the other to get better grades. Even earlier on, they still hoped the other would do better. They just wanted to be together!

God I love this novel. It isn't my favorite because I am still into very unrealistic sci fi and fantasy novels, but I love this novel of 2 geniuses acting like fools for 100 chapters. 10/10 would recommend. It is gold. BEAUTIFUL. I love <<less

This is a good romance/school life. The novel practically exudes the kind of youthfulness (that I wish I had), and captures the school life and teenage years really well. The romance is also nice, though rather slow, but no forcing, and it's quite comforting to read.

might come off as cliché or not a very outstanding plot, perhaps, to some readers. Both ML and MC are quite OP, so skip this novel if you don't like OP characters. "Genius Protagonist" is also in the tag, so don't complain 'bout that if you finish reading it. It seems that some people also don't like the slow moving plot line, focused on the school activities rather than the romance at first, so it really depends on the reader whether the book is good or really good.

Last thing, the characters are really well done. No flat characters, no overwhelming amount of characters to the point where I can't even remember the ML's name, and their personalities are really bright, like not the cheerful kind of bright, but more like colourful, or something like that. I also love the teacher. Wish I had a teacher like that before. Probably coulda been a better student.

Anyways, I'd definitely recommend this book and please excuse my bad English. Have a nice day. <<less

This was such a comfort novel. The author was able to write a high school atmosphere so GOOOD and I just had so many feelings towards the end when the cast graduated.

I love the main couple so much and I love how comfortable they are with each other. Xie Yu and He Zhao as individual characters are so wonderful and their transition into becoming friends and later boyfriends is so endearing and made all the more so as they are accompanied by their humorous but lovable classmates.

  1. This was my first modern BL novel I read before this I only read the historical ones. So it was a new experience for me. I really liked how MC and ML were on equal level (not like other novel's where the uke's are protrayed a little weaker than the Seme) . I also liked how ML was funny and out going person while the MC was not (I understand you Xie Yu). Most importantly I like their relationship with their classmates. It makes me remember my days when I was with my classmates preparing for the exams to get into a good college. (But the exams got cancelled due to Corona virus and it's a pity I didn't get to say proper farewell words to my friends)

The character of Old Tang made me remember my homeroom teachers who were really understanding and encouraged us to study hard but at the same time to enjoy life.

Overall the book was according to my liking and I loved it. Maybe I will comeback to re-read it again in the the future.

a great novel. I didn't even realize it ended till I got to the last chapter, it still felt too little!!!! as great as the novel was, my review for the most part will contain my personal opinions on what I felt was a bit lacking. alo possible spoilers ahead, read at ur own risk.

first of all I just want to say that there is nothing realistic about this novel what so ever.... it annoys me when ppl say that cuz in reality ppl dont purposely get such bad grades... more>> for such reasons and actually coincidentally happen to be in the same school... not hating/judging but I mean-it ain't realistic.

i do love all characters as well as the whole budding romance and fluffiness, but I did hope that I would see a bit of internal-struggle within the two teenagers about being gay or confessing to the other. This IMHO would have given the book more life, made readers feel more apart of the novel since im sure everyone/most ppl have had that 'identity' struggle. WHO AM I? WHAT AM I GOING TO BECOME? IS WHAT IM DOING/FEELING WRONG/RIGHT? AM I MAKING A MISTAKE? SHOULD I GO FOR THIS?

something I found vexing in this book is the MC's whole family situation. I mean him getting bad grades was to protect his mom from harsh rumors/criticism since he didn't have the ability to do so.... but after he straightened his grades, the issue with the step-bro was never mentioned again, even if he was the main reason behind it?! it's a huge glaringly annoying plot-hole IMO!!!!! Not only that but I felt that the step-dad was not mentioned well enough, the same with ML's dad.... tf did he do?Are they rich/poor/ok? basically their back-story is so blank.i would have liked to know a lot more about these side-characters who are closely related to MC/ML. like MC's aunt/god-mom was mentioned so much but we still don't get her significance of her role, what happened with ML mom+sis, the MC dad.... heck! tf was up with that teachers back story?!?

basically this is a sweet slice-of-life, high school years of youth kinda story it doesn't leave a huge impact if you've read many similar BL novels before, you know apart from both leads being smart+tyrants who hide their true abilities and the MC being the cold aloof one and ML being the seemingly laughing devil, nothing too special. nut it still creeps into your heart slowly bit by bit and completely traps it in,

i really enjoy our MC being the tease and not typical scrawny delicate MC-shou

i also especially loved that studying app/game part of the ovel, it was very unique and interesting. its a pity tho that it wasn't as explored on as I would have liked it to be. But again apart a few plot holes and some vague happenings that dont affect the main story line. the whole book is great.

translators have done a great job too, thank you author, thank you translator! <<less

Recommended to read! This novel seemly very ordinary, but still was able to leave a deep impression.

MC and ML are both well known to be tyrants in the school, are put into one class and it marks a new beginning of a memorable school year.

MC is cold and aloof, very stingy with words, saving his warmth inside for the few people he truly cares about. ML is very outgoing, witty and likes to go bullshitting always. Both of them have their own back stories which have led them into their... more>> current eternal firsts from last. From the annoying the other and being annoyed relationship, the MC and ML find themselves already fallen in love. After they solve their problems, they come back with their glorious marks regaining their lost selves, carrying the hopes for a better future with each other. The supporting roles played an indispensable part in the novel as well.

But the plot had some parts where it was not concluded well. Some things were left unexplained. Except for that the novel was great with loads of fun. <<less

I am filled with just endless praises for this novel. I remember starting it a while ago, and then getting bored by the first few chapters and never finishing. But am I glad that I revisited because truly, this has to be one of favorite high school coming of age stories. The two leads have the best chemistry with each other, and with a premise as hilarious as two study gods masquerading as slackers, it really couldn't have been anything but amazing.

There were moments I was literally on the floor... more>> laughing, especially when the two of them finally figured out that they were both pretending the whole time. The build up to that scene was perfect, and the way they both reacted was just too funny. The classroom dynamics as well were so amusing, and all the individual side characters had their own quirks that made the novel feel that much more real. Beyond the main characters, it's always so nice when side characters get their own development without taking away from the main plot line.

Both ML and MC are such interesting characters as well. ML emanates himbo energy, a favorite for me, and he's absolutely whipped for the MC. He finds everything that the MC does endearing, and he's a very loyal friend and loving boyfriend. He's also completely shameless with his affection for MC, and is just such an inherently good person behind all the jokes and bluster. I really liked that he also had more to his personality than just simping over the MC, as he had his own reasons for faking his slacker persona (which is revealed a little later on in the novel), and had moments of emotional vulnerability spread throughout the novel as he confronted his past.

The MC is one of those characters where I really wonder if anyone like him could exist in real life haha! He's cold and very blunt on the outside, but has a hidden tenderness and caring inside. Your typical tsundere. His reasons for faking bad grades is discovered pretty early on, and his inner thoughts are quite funny, like when he thinks about how he needs to work on developing his slacker persona more when he sees ML slacking off haha! I always do love a tsundere though, especially one that can break out of the shell occasionally and speak his wants and feelings aloud as does this MC.

I really liked how the relationship development of the two leads progressed, with both of them slowly starting to become more conscious of each other, their feelings growing more ambiguous as they spent more time with each other. The two of them treated each other differently than all their other friends from the very start, and it was so sweet the little ways they would initiate contact with each other and check in on each other even before they started dating. I wouldn't call this a slow burn necessarily but the development is very natural, and they're both able to recognize their own feelings and take initiative. Once they get together,
Spoiler

ML is constantly h**ny from MC calling him gege, which was too funny as he would bluntly just say "I'm hard" every time lmaoo. And even though MC liked to put up a cold front, he was just as hot blooded for the ML haha they're a perfect match.

[collapse]

This is such a wholesome story overall, with the perfect blend of romance, humor, and slice of life goodness. I just loved how these two boys fell in love and supported each other, and though one is clearly more open to expressing his feelings than the other, the relationship felt very mutual and genuine. Really, really love this novel!

Also ML's dad kills me, with

Spoiler

the birthday and then the relationship acknowledgment videos. The fact that the bad gift giving was also passed down to ML... MC receiving that abomination of a gift on his birthday and having to pretend he liked it was too good. The things MC does for love hahaha he really softened up his heart for the ML.

I'll start by saying I read this a while back so I don't remember all the details. I also read it while I was around the same age as the characters, in my last bit of highschool, so maybe I'm a little biased.

Overall, most of the reviews are right. This story is fundamentally all about that good old highschool experience, medium burn (not immediate love, but not too slow), very fluffy and optimistic. This novel excels in slice of life humor and character interactions. The plot is not very interesting,... more>> but I find that a little refreshing. There's many highschool romances that twist you upside down and leave you dizzy with all the love triangles, squares, side couples, secrets etc., and leaving the reality of being a teenager behind. This one is very straightforward, the most unrealistic thing being the main characters' absurd level of intelligence and how close their class ends up being to each other and their teacher.

One of the main positive points for me was how even if the main couple are "flawless" geniuses, in the end they're still teenagers. They can make dumb decisions, be dramatic or get stuck in their own heads because they're not mature yet. But it doesn't come off as annoying, and in the end each misunderstanding is cleared. Overall, the characters are A+ with satisfying growth by the end.

If I had any complains, it would be that it gets too sappy for my taste at times, particularly towards the end. It has a very hopeful coming-of-age feel that is so sweet it's cloying. I did love the extras, though, to the point I even cried a little at the last one with the bittersweet feeling of a parent watching their child leave the nest: happy, but wishing our time together was a little longer. <<less
