Centuries ago, Daoist Jing Yuan died from lightning. A millennium later, he comes back to life, but discovers that the stars have shifted and the world has transformed by leaps and bounds.

Marketplace: Selling herbs for 10 coppers each, alleviates fevers and detoxifies, reduces swelling and relieves pain.

Jing Yuan: Isn’t this the main precious herb used for Foundation Establishment Pills?

Auction house: Advanced level cultivation method starting at 30,000 spirit-stones!

Jing Yuan: Isn’t this the tr*shiest cultivation method you could find anywhere on the streets?

Art gallery: “The 100 Influential Figures of the Cultivation World”

Jing Yuan: Aren’t these my good friends A, B, C, D and old enemies 1, 2, 3, 4?

Bookstore: “Jing Yuan: A Biography“, “Memoirs of Jing Yuan“, “An Intro to Daoist-Master Jing Yuan’s Legendary Life“, “Honored Master Jing Yuan Teaches You How to Guide Qi into the Body“, “The Seven Habits of Founder Jing Yuan”

Jing Yuan: ?? Isn’t this me? Wait, when did I gain seven habits?

The companions he once journeyed with have long passed away, and not even 1/10 of the formerly glorious cultivation legacies remain. Yet, in this world without him, his legend still exists. This kind of feeling, is a bit embarrassing…

I love world-building and kinda slow life vibe of this story. MC and ML are OP but that's okay. For me, even though romance starts quite late but the story isn't boring at all because I enjoy MC's journey along the way.

Plus, after ML realizes his feeling for MC, he flirts very actively and he is thick-skinned enough that it makes MC goes speechless several times (lol).

The only complain I have is the ending. It's too abrupt and some plots ain't revealed yet.

I'm about to finish it, but not yet because it breaks my heart to end it. 10/10, highly recommended.

This is one of my favorite novels, and while it doesn't follow the principle of Chekhov's gun, it manages to catch me with every arc.

This will always be my favorite lead - Jing Yue is not a naturally patient, hard-working or talented person, but his many years of experience lead him to adopt a calm attitude when he is facing a problem. He is not just a protagonist, he is a leader... more>> and behaves as such. He keeps calm, listens, rewards those who deserve it, and punishes very severely those who don't. As in one chapter he said: "if you want to win, you just have to follow me, but if you follow me, then know that I don't tolerate disobedience; those who disobey will be punished". Jing Yue, in turn, is a kind person who knows compassion and camaraderie. He is neither ignorant nor naive, he can be fooled once, but never twice.

Some things the novel focuses on is the Dao such as following the principles of your path, not being trapped by the demons in your heart, to follow the causal relationships with which the heavens work, not to be presumptuous because if you want to achieve something, you have to put all your effort into it, not just cut corners: high-level techniques are useless for those without a solid foundation, perfect the foundations, build slowly but surely, take your time to get things done...

This is the sense of calm that the novel conveys to me, I think that even if not all the threads were completely connected and some points were for fun more than the plot, all of them added together give you the feeling of enjoying life, taking things easy, that you don't need to rush to get immediate results, that you don't need to be talented to reach the top and understand the constant change by which the universe is constituted.

The protagonist died in his first life while cultivating because his technique was too advanced for him. That "too advanced" was in the spiritual sense. He was not mentally prepared, and it is that exchange of ideas and acceptance, his evolution throughout the novel and understanding in each of his techniques that is what touches the heart. While there was a "final enemy", I don't think that was the point of the novel at all, but rather closure for some missing points. I think the real closure was understanding his techniques. <<less

This is a tiring novel to be honest. What I admire is the setting of this novel, it was a vast universe, certainly what you would expect from a xianxia novel.

The beginning was pretty exciting, the middle part was tiring to read (especially because I was MTLing them), that I felt relief when I come towards the end.

Although I said it was tiring, the plot was arranged nicely, uncovering hidden plot here and there while building it for the last climax, which was the end.

MC was already strong (in term... more>> of knowledge but not physical strength) and he became more stronger while always disappearing to another realm every time something happen. Maybe because I read too much novel with witty MC, that I feel this MC is a bit bland (but I still like him as a calm beauty). But looking from a different aspects, MC is fit with his character because he already live for so many years. This novel focused mainly on the cultivation part, so the romance between MC and ML is very very slow. Basically there was not enough dog food to be fed to the reader. However, their interactions are definitely heartwarming.

Another thing I appreciate was that this novel does not dwell on face-slapping too much, because MC is magnanimous and wise (and soft-hearted). Maybe that's why the villains are not memorable at all throughout the novel. One last thing, the only one who move the story forward is not the MC or ML or whoever it was, it was Jiji!

I'd give this 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 4.

Excellent translations by iso

The novel is basically a mix of a Xianxia faceslapping novel with BL... and the ship hasn't even sailed after 77 chapters. I think it's starting soon, but man... this is slow burn for sure.

I also feel like the pacing is a bit wonky (some things happen suddenly?), but I guess you could call it episodic? I think that the MC lacks a clear goal besides "get stronk, improve sect, beat up the yao, " so the... more>> topic/what's going on jumps around a lot. Also, there aren't really interesting side characters, and I have difficulty differentiating them/remembering them. I think I can remember like 2 of them by name, haha. A lot of side characters seem to get forgotten after their "episode" ends. Makes sense since you can't lug around this weakling once you get stronger, but it makes it hard to form an attachment to anyone besides the MC/ML.

I think the MC is reasonable and strong without being overpowering, but... he's kind of bland imo. He's not a bad/cringe MC, but he's not very interesting. Also, I feel like everything goes too smoothly for him? That, or the author can't convey that there's a crisis. There hasn't really been a hype moment in 77 chapters (even in the serious action scenes and life-threatening moments).

The MC's "pet" is also a little annoying (Kinda like Paimon from Genshin Impact :v). I appreciate that the bird's ride-or-die, but his dialogue (modern day knowledge/comments) is pretty inane imo. Not a big deal overall, but it's just another thing that bothered me. I feel like the author slapped in the bird to ensure that the MC wouldn't just be cultivating in silence or talking to himself, haha.

Lots of faceslapping and Xianxia elements with a side of romance so far. I can see the tropes, haha. The novel tries to be self-aware with the bird's commentary pointing out tropes, but it's... still pretty much the same tropes. They aren't executed in an exciting way either... just executed normally.

Not a bad read, but I'm having difficulty getting interested in it. Maybe readers who haven't read much xianxia (and don't recognize the tropes) would like it. <<less

I have to admit this was one of the best novels I have ever read. It was quite long but I enjoyed every single chapter. It had quite a lot of world building, the characters were well written and the interactions between them were a good balance of serious and funny. All in all, 5 out of 5 for me.

I really can't read anymore due to the second-hand embarrassment I feel. So far, it feels like the MC is the typical ML from a cultivation novel. I just can't get over whenever he spouts these embarrassing lines. It also feels really dull because there's not really a goal he has. What is he trying to do now that he's reborn? It feels like he's just drifting around aimlessly.
