For this novel to be written in 2009, I must say it was definitely ahead of its time. There were really no annoying misunderstandings between the main pairing that have you yell out in frustration and the whole novel was quite humourous (Even at the most serious of moments). Feisha's shamelessness and wittiness is a rare thing I find in novels, especially in ones written in the 2000s. His shameless is probably even more than that of Wei Wuxian's.

The plot was not always centered around Feisha nor the ML, but... more>> actually around the other side characters too. Their (ML x MC) romance was only a minor thing for at least 3/4s of this novel tho, so if you're here for the BL... boy.. I have something to tell you.

Did I also tell you that there are other lovely side couples in this novel too? The relationship between the MC and ML is a slow slooow burn romance, but the side couples (
Spoiler

mainly Gin and Hughes

[collapse]
) are at times pretty steamy.

I do find that the ending of the novel was a bit rushed, but the 26 chapter extras are sure to keep me entertained. (already read 6 extras when I wrote this review) <<less

First off, I just want to say that this novel is SO INCREDIBLY AMAZING! It's so good and if I have to compare (please note that this is MY OPINION, opinion should be respected unless it can hurt one's feelings) I'd compare this to MXTX's Mo Dao Zu Shi, or Grandmaster of the Demonic Cultivation. Perhaps, this novel might score more for me and let me tell you, I LOVE MDZS, so to say that I'd rate SH more than MDZS says a lot!

This novel is so CRAZY and it's... more>> a whole masterpiece and I'm very upset and disappointed that it's underrated. So underrated that if you Google Spirit Hotel, nothing about the novel will show up, no fanarts or whatsoever.

This novel has the PERFECT AMOUNT OF comedy, so funny that you can't help to re-read it and just ROLF. Even without context, it's still so funny! The Main Character is a whole comedian and he's a whole different than your average MC. He is very like able and gets along well with ANYONE and it's just so good. Feisha is super intelligent as in speaking and thinking, so smart that it would cause him trouble like arriving death door but he is always rescued by the ML so that's the romance.
The romance is just too sweet, not only the MC and ML romance were shown, other sub couples are shown too and it's jist AHH TOO ADORABLE!!!

The translators worked hard and had explained every puns the novel had too and it's so great. I really hope everyone who comes across Spirit Hotel gives it a read because it's just marvelous! And if you need someone to talk to abt Spirit Hotel, I got you. *Coughcough, @meinuto on ig, coughcough* <<less

This is one of the wittiest, most hysterical books I have ever read. I cannot remember the last time I laughed out loud while reading.

The protagonist is mischievous and clever, making the very best out of a unique situation. He essentially exists to create drama and matchmake - either of which he can be described as good or not-so-good at depending on how you look at it. The story is primarily slice of life, following the daily antics of Feisha and the crew, with some fantasy and adventure elements thrown... more>> in. The romance is very slow, picking up towards the end of the story, but the ML is caring and protective throughout, though he wears a cold facade.

The only thing to dislike is that there is a major plot that is introduced fairly early on, that doesn't have too much of a payoff or followup. <<less

MC is probably the most shameless MC I have ever read. When it comes to debates he probably will win most of the time because he is very sly. It's quite funny that he keeps mouthing off people that can actually kill him and those people are royalty, angels, and devils lol

ML is this typical cold person but was thawed by MC. Tbh he is quite boring on his own but combining him with MC is just hilarious.

The plot is somewhat.... lacking I guess? It was good in the first... more>> half but when the ending came I was like.. was that really it? I feel that the ending would have been more satisfactory if the author could have explored more. The characters and the setting was really rich. There were also some unanswered questions like

Spoiler
    • What made the MC so special that he was granted immortality?
    • Why could he talk to metatron?
    • Why wasnt able to talk to metatron when ML went back in heaven?

Overall, the story is nice. Kinda wish it was longer though. <<less

I absolutely adore this novel. It has everything I love: slow burn, shameless and smart protag, and emotionally strong MC.
Spoiler

God I love Feisha. He's such a refreshing character. Funny, shameless and emotionally strong and when he discovers he has feelings for Isefel, he goes for him without fluctuating like other mcs. Also I like that he teases Isefel and is enthusiastic in their relationship. I'm tired of reluctant relationships and s*x in bl it always does me dirty like the MCs don't rly want to be in a relationship so to find an MC that is very certain about being in a gay relationship and didn't have to be pressured into it is everything. All of this is to say I live SH and most of Feisha and I'm genuinely happy that he's happy because let's be honest he deserves it. So kudos to Feisha and Isefel for having one of the most consensual and wholesome relationships in bl.

I've never snickered and rolled in my bed in laughter so much before, while reading a novel. The MC is endearingly shameless and the banter with some of his coworkers are... (admittedly) a little more fun than his interaction with ML. But their dynamic compliments each other all the same. Once you find out who ML is, that is.

I like that the other characters don't fade into the background and have distinct personalities of their own that shine and don't get overshadowed by the main CP. Hells.. even the... more>> side CPs get a lot more action than the main. But it's ok, I'm looking forward to reading the translated extras for some fluff. <<less

One of my favorite stories. I've couldn"t stop laughing, does MC is shameless? I don't think so, but I can already admit that he has guts. Really he have sharp tongue but also soft heart. It's great how he find his place and after all most of creatures on Noah Arc wish him well even if they don't say that. Definietly reccommended

The live slapstick comedic interactions between MC and others are always hilarious and the MC never misses to surprise you with his sharp-witted remarks as well.

For instance,

Spoiler

"con him, duh. So long as he has ears and a brain, I'm confident I can talk in circles till his head spins" - Feisha

Simple but it still drags you to another chapter waiting for what unexpected things MC will make.

Honestly hilarious story. The yaoi is still not in development though we can see minor hints of it. But the humour and Feisha's shamelessness makes up for it. The translation is good quality.

The humour in this made me laugh more times than I could count. Definitely a good read.

Feisha's character may not sit well with everyone but for me it was a bit.

:/ sry for not giving this a perfect score... but this is one of the few novels I read myself! So kudos to SH for actually interesting me! Lol the story is pretty ridiculous, but it gave me a good several laughs as I read. The only problems I have with it are the sometimes weird/unclear language and the overly cunning MC! Now, it may just be my inexperience in novel-planet, but often the long, clunky sentences left me in the dust whenever the MC had a "brilliant plan" or... more>> was trying to explain something in general. I guess I just like simple, English-like sentences, but SH wouldn't give that to me sometimes? Otherwise, I suppose the convoluted-ness of this story is part of the humor, like a ridiculous soap-opera, and it does that well. <<less

Fun and entertaining, it is a quite simple story and it surely has much more humor and sense in the original language, because when you use so many references and word games, many are lost in translation. There’s something he hates about this story, and I think the extras should be that, extras. If we ignore the more than twenty extras (without wanting to read them all) and we stick to the main story this is lame everywhere. There are a large number of subplots that receive no conclusion or... more>> explanation, they are simply ignored halfway through.
The main character, although funny, has a somewhat strange personality, suddenly surrounded by magical creatures but the only concern he has in the head is his salary...
I would recommend this book if you want to laugh for a while or if you are looking for a book where everyone is gay and couples are everywhere. <<less

3.5/5

Read Michelle-08’s review; I agree with much of the same.

What I liked:

  • I haven’t laughed out loud so much since my first read of SVSSS
  • Seriously, Feisha (MC) is shameless and a COMEDY GENIUS, he is cringe but he is free~
  • Liked the world-building; it wasn’t very much but there didn’t need to be since the focus is on the characters and the humor. But the world of Noah’s Ark, a honeymoon to Hell, and solving riddles in the faerie world was really fun
  • Loved Feisha + Isefel (ML) as a couple since I think their personalities work well together, but I agree with other reviews that while we could clearly see the crumbs of clues of Feisha’s growing feelings for Isefel, the sudden revelation that Isefel has fallen so deeply in love was startling
Why it’s not a 4 (a re-read, for me) :

  • Important plot points were dropped too quickly while nonsensical, inane stuff was focused on too much. Example:
    Spoiler

the battle at Genesis, the big boss Baal, the LITERAL BLACK HOLE OF TIME AND SPACE

    [collapse]
had some AMAZING build-up but then Feisha passes out or doesn’t go with the group or doesn’t see the action and the whole thing is wrapped up OFF SCREEN
  • Thank god there was an extra that explained
    Spoiler

the 180 degree character shift in Shamal after his kidnapping

    [collapse]
because it literally wasn’t mentioned at all
  • I personally care about characters just a tiny bit more than plot... but with the holes in the logic for both, what should’ve only taken me a week to read took me 3 weeks since I was dragging my feet
  • TL was weird sometimes. The angel and devil names changed every other chapter and it was clear some of the more obscure Chinese idioms and puns did not get any sort of localization
Not a re-read for me, but certainly a hilarious time with fun characters in a fun world.

Many reviewers said this was a hit or miss, and after reading the reviews I guess I can see why. It was kind of surprising though, because years later this is still one of my favorites.

This is probably the type of reader that will like this novel: someone looking for something very comedic, with a shameless MC, hilarious and sometimes cringey situations, and not much romance at all. You pick this up, if you don't like the humor or settings within the first few chapters, it's probably best to drop... more>> the novel, because the tone won't change until almost the very end. It's more about the characters and their silly antics, and not the world, plot or their relationships.

Feisha is probably top 3 MC for me still. I was grinning this entire novel. Even the scarce moments between him and ML in the end made it feel even more sweet to me. Most novels I've read were more heavy and this one had very refreshing themes. There was a tiny bit of angst at the end, which was an addition I welcomed. <<less

lol it was hilarious and I screenshotted literally half the book... good pairing tho I kinda wish Antonio had more screen time. He's literally a perfect guy sigh... Isafael too but he's taken. Can I please get Antonio in my life? Also idk why but Isafael felt kinda bland most of the time, tho he started getting a personality at the end.... oh wait, ik why but now you don't teehee~

Side ships were hella cute I liked some a lot more than our main couple. [ Ahem... HUGHES AND GIN... more>> ]

Feisha Shi is an icon I live up to, and I always strive to be as shameless as he is. He can be a lil annoying sometimes but eh, still funny as hell for a light read.

There was a lot of potential for the side charas but they stayed in the background, majority of the conflicts involved romance which filled my nosy, gossipy heart full of joy. The serious aspects were chucked aside to who-knows-where. <<less

this was generally a lighthearted and enjoyable read. I enjoyed the humor and the wordplay and I love reading about the more reflective parts -- the characters' views on relationships/life. But I think this book (it's self-published) could have done with a good editor. The author's language is awkward at times and there are typos/grammatical errors. There are times when I really have no idea what a word or sentence means, and I end up translating by guessing at its most likely meaning, lol. Sometimes, even my friend, a native... more>> Chinese speaker, can't parse the meaning. <<less

this novel really is a hit or miss like one of the commenter says. The way the story is heavily dependent on romance of the not only on the MCs but also on the side characters is a little bit unsettling. Feisha is a great character but aside from him the others are lacking when it comes to fleshing out each individual character. ML is also a bit bland.

im not usually the type to drop something when im reading but this is an exception. I'll drop this for now but... more>> I'll make sure to continue this maybe after reading one or two novels <<less

Currently reading while I'm writing this review, but ngl, the side characters are not likable at all. Sure, they're funny, but they just all (maybe just a small handful are civilized) dislike the MC for no damn reason, even if he's helping them. So much for the different races and their peace and harmony. Sure, they're all more powerful than the human being, maybe that's why they look down on MC, but still, even after they got "closer", you'd think they treat him as an equal, or a "friend"... but... more>> noooo. Well. Anyways, this is just me getting things off my chest. Will updates once I've done reading this.
Oh, and those, expecting to get into romance for the MC and ML at the start, get ready to be disappointed cuz I'm at chapter 30 plus, and MC and ML barely interacts. It's more of the side couples stuff.

Update: 4.5/5 okay as much as I was ranting on earlier, and almost dropped at around mid 30 chapters or so, at 40, it gets soo much better. Or maybe cuz my rant helped me get things off my chest lol. To note, this is extremely slow burn, but you get snippets of gushy romance and it's sooo cute. The interactions between the MC and ML is perfectly cute. Though, another thing to note is that even though this is comedy, the translation from chinese to English doesn't really do the comedy justice, sure, some parts are still funny, but this author uses alot of chinese puns and jokes that only native speakers know of. I know chinese, so some parts make sense though I'm not native, therefore, it just goes over my head.

It picks up around 80 or so, and the action is really good! The last few chapters even got me sniffling. For the extras, they're really endearing slice of life chapters which I adore. <<less

The novel is quite good. It's story plot is amazing. The characters are also interesting. And of course, MC is really playful and shameless. His journey of life after becoming a hotel employee is filled with supernatural stuff and naturally dangerous but is the best, especially when he realizes his love towards the ML. His friendship with other characters is nice and he even knows how to support them when in need, and they also help the MC in their own way .

Thank You for the translation.

It's a light-hearted romcom
the romance starts late, but the extras make up for it, the comedy had me in tears

just keep in mind that it isn't romance focused for the MC n ML, it starts quite late, but the pining is quite cute to read
