Fu Li was a yaoguai from the countryside who had never seen the world. After entering the city, his biggest dream was to become a civil servant and leave his name in historical records.

However… He didn’t have a university degree. Not even a high school graduation certificate.

So, even a yaoguai would not be able to find a good job if they didn’t study well.

this book is rly a hidden gem, if I havent found it on mtl I wouldnt have found this book at all which is such a waste because this book is so good!!!!

The book starts off with Fu Li (MC) in the human world working off jobs introduced by the Demon Alliance. He meets Zhuang Qing (ML) many times (bc of the other demons) before officially working in his office which is the Monster Administration Bureau.

But do keep in mind that the romance is extremely slow. ML only figures... more>> he has feelings for MC in later chapters (either 80/90+) and they officially get together in Chapter 116/118. Cant remember HAHAHA. &Amp;& I like how MC is 4000 yrs old and ML is only 2000+ yrs old, the MC always treats ML as a young child and himself as the adult in the earlier chapters; nvr failed to crack me up HAHA

I don’t want to spoil too much but please give this a read, u definitely wont regret it. The raws are not hard to understand at all, the only thing u have to google about would be the demon’s species. <<less

Oh, my heart...my auntie heart.

It squeezed and tightened when reading this.

This novel place great emphasis on time. How time continues to flow, how civilizations grow, and how the Universe watches the world spin.

... more>> The yaoguai, once prosperous beings of the world, are now decreasing; Humans taking their place.

What was really heart breaking was the reunion of Fu Li's family.

Although the mountain has disappeared, his elders did not.

Aside from the slightly angst bits, it was enjoyable seeing the relationship development between Fu Li and Zhuang Qing. It was very silly but very sweet.

Nevertheless, this story us not without its flaws. Given the great momentum the author gave to Fu Li's secret, I expected the climax to be more impact full. Im not sure how it could be more impactful but it was lacking given Fu Li's lack of emotional cognition for most of the novel.

Nonetheless, I liked how the novel made me think a bit more philosophically.

This novel is a great read.

5/5

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
    • MC that is good natured, have nice personality yet not a pushover. He's a bit naive but not s*upid, I totally like this kind of MC. He's also powerful but not OP, it's perfectly balanced considering his background.
    • ML is cold and aloof at first glance but apparently just a bit arrogant and stingy haha he'll become smitten to MC later on and appreciates MC strength, he doesn't realize that he already fell for MC, I mean he's super tolerant at MC. I like his character because he's an upright person and cares for MC so much.
    • Side Characters are top notch, liking that MC and ML got their own friends and precious people around, the interactions are just funny and heartwarming
    • For the plot and stories are good, not that groundbreaking but the way author wrote it made the storytelling flow smoothly, there are also lots of morals teaching with some of chicken soup
    • Honestly MC and ML relationship and interaction are just so sweet, sprinkled with some comedic undertones that made it's not overly sweet or overwhelming.
    • There's some angst too in the story, so it made everything felt balanced. I appreciate that part as well because it made things more rewarding in the end
    • Ending is perfect, I'd like to see more extras about their life but it ended on a good note
Overall this is an amazing novel, 5/5! I'd love to re-read this when it's fully translated. MTL is pretty readable as well.

I finished reading this novel at the beginning of the year and I love it! This novel is one of my favorite novels! Our MC is naive and s*upid because he just 'woke up' and doesn't know the outside world. If I'm not mistaken he slept for 2000 thousand years. MC has 'known' ML for a long time, and I was moved by how ML really liked MC and waited for him. ML should have been destined to be king but because of his heartbreak, he didn't want to. But I am very happy because finally they got together and ML's wish came true. The identity of the MC monster was extraordinary and I was sad towards the end. MC is very funny because he is 2000 thousand years older than ML so he thinks ML is a child. Oh yeah, and don't forget the MC family on the mountains. Even though our MC is naive but he is not a saint, if he takes revenge then the monster race will end!

This novel is really nice to read.

All the characters are really 3d. Usually, in my eyes, any MC that is even a little bit "naive" or "dense" come out as s*upid to me, but in this case, the author made the character really well. The MC looks at the world with pure eyes, perhaps being a little dense and not knowledgeable about the ways of humans, but he never seemed s*upid or overly dense to me. So no 2d or flat characters (even for the side characters), and it makes... more>> the story and plot really vivid. The romance is also really nice, though it happens in the rather latter half of the novel, so it might seem a little bit lacking in the first half, but it's really good when it starts rolling. The romance and plot is also really well balanced, and I think it's perfectly fine this way, though perhaps some people will think there isn't enough fluff or CP-ish moments (Or rather, the CP-ish moments are pure fluff and it may feel like it's a daily life of husbands married over a decade rather than dog food scattering of newlyweds). There were also some comments on the novel saying the shou and gong aren't really "clear", so you can see rather than focusing on CP-ish moments the author chooses to focus on the plot and "eternal love" or something like that. (My English sucks please don't take the eternal love part literally I just don't know the exact translation for it)

Its also an interesting novel if you're interested in Chinese mythology, and even I, a Chinese, learned quite a few myths or legends I didn't know while reading this. The author implies that we ourselves are living in a world while the Chinese myth thingys are doing their own thing like in the novel, and I think it's quite interesting to think about.

Anyways, I'd definitely recommend this. Sorry for the bad English and have a nice day. <<less

Rating : 10/ 10

  • It's a MUST read..
  • It may seem a bit slow at the beginning, but in my opinion this pace is absolutely perfect for building up this one.. The plot is wholesome.. The ending is satisfying.. But it'll make the readers crave for more..
  • The protagonist is simply a jewel.. Although he doesn't this modern world that much, he isn't by any means s*upid or boring.. Instead his innocence and strength is refreshing..
    Spoiler

Fu Li, the protagonist was brought up as a rabbit by auspicious yaos.. He slept for two thousand years when his mountain was destroyed and his guardians disappeared.. He came to live among the humans after waking up and had an ambition to go to the university and become a civil servant..

    [collapse]
  • The protagonist is strong.. Super strong to be precise.. But not OP in a cliched way..
  • ML is so rich that he has embedded his house and car with gems, and yet so stingy that he even charges his subordinates the petrol fare for giving them a ride.. He is strong but isn't the typical tyrannical boss..
  • ML changes little by little under the protagonist's influence and gradually falls in love with him..
    Spoiler

Zhuang Qing has loved Fu Li since his previous lifetime, but has forgotten all about it after reincarnation..

    [collapse]

  • There is no love at first sight, no unnecessary fluff, no unhealthy possessiveness, no burning passion, which is also why it's one of my most favourite novel now..
  • All of the characters, be it the main ones or the small fleeting ones, each one of them perfectly fits and contributes to the plot.. The flow is really smooth..
  • I totally wanted some extras at the end.. Oh well.. This type of ending is kind of poetic that leaves you with the imagination about their future.. So no complain about that..

Translation is very well done so kudos to the translators.

As for the novel itself; I don't know where to begin. I had high expectations given that there is not a single review that is less than five stars. If this is 5 stars, than what is TGCF, MDZS, QJJ etc... ? 8*?
My conclusion is that I'm simply not the right demographic for this novel. It is written for early teenagers I think.

The first ~100 chapters are boring and very predictable. The last 40 chapters are much better compared to... more>> the former. But still,

Spoiler

the moment you are wondering whether FU LI is gone for good or not, he is already back! There is no tension whatsoever.

[collapse]

there are plot holes

Spoiler

At the beginning the novel gives the impression that FL is poor, has to beg for burial money from MC but turns out he can get mountains of gold from his qiankunbag. Doesn't make any sense.

[collapse]

Another thing I struggled with is how I couldn't really visualise them main characters of this novel in my head. This didn't happen to me before and I don't know if it is the actual lack of description other than being tall and thin or is it because of my boredom while reading this that my brain didn't register those descriptions.

I like to binge read novels but with this one I had trouble doing that. I finished it nevertheless, given the good feedback.

Lastly, I would have liked to see more romance. It was almost non existent.

I know my review might be contradicting the rest and I suggest you to give it a shot if you are in doubt. But don't expect much plot, romance, or what not. <<less

AAAAAAA THIS IS SO CUTE OHMYGOD AUWKHSOXMEHDKXIMSHWOXMH THIS AMAZING BRILLIANT AAAAAAAAA!?€??2? Sure enough, 4.8 star rated novels are a whole different breed like what actual DAMN??

the synopsis is a bit misleading, its very badass actually. Very action-full and supernatural packed!!! I think the uni life part gets mentioned only a few times LOL

just to be clear, MC may seem like your typical naive s*upid MC in the first chapter and from the synopsis, and I thought that too, which was why I was reluctant to read this BUT REST ASSURE... more>> HE'S NOT HES ACTUALLY SUPER STRONG AND I LOVE HIS CHARACTER SO MUCH!???

the world building is amazing, and the integration of cultivation, traditional, and mythical things blends in so well with the setting of the modern world. The author has a subtle emphasis of the passage of time, like how slowly throughout the millennium, the great yaoguais who used to rule the world gradually disappeared as the human civilizations thrived. As we read on, we get to know the history behind this world and also uncover the backstory of our MC (and ML hehe) ; as well as see how the MC - an ancient yao who had woken up 2 thousand years later to a modern world - slowly becoming acquainted with daily human life. They work at a yao bureau thingy that takes care of yao in the modern era and keeping them a secret from humanity (?) they also take care of the threats like evil yao and demons. IDK KINDA LIKE A YAOGUAI POLICE/GOVERNMENT?

the romance is so wholesome omgomgomg I LOBE THEM SO MUCH HUUU!!!! I LOGE THEIR INTERACTIONS?? Since MC is like 4000+ years and ML is just 2000+, MC likes to treat ML as a kid and ML gets you're-too-young/minor zoned a lot its so funny, , , their romance progressed pretty slowly in the beginning, they were just friends, but when the confession happened it progressed really fast, no unnecessary "hm i'll have to think about it" or something, just BOOm!! Quick, simple, no misunderstandings.
Spoiler

ML realizes feelings around ch80-90 and they get together around 119 I think

[collapse]

MC is so helpful, he likes to support yaoguais in trouble and also remove anything that could be a threat to the current yao community. He's an ancient yao so his cultivation is very strong. He's kinda like an 'old' elder, also super gentle, humble and a cutie, !! Hes no pushover though, his fighting skills are superb! ML IS MY FAVORITE!! Hes so cute like HAHAHA? Hes a dragon, so he's very powerful and rich, but also a bit stingy. He works very hard. He also has a bit of tsundere-ness LOL doting behind the scenes, , I love them hehe. The side characters are all very 3-D and has personalities too, I especially like kunpeng and MC's elders they bicker a lot its so cute.

overall, heck yeah this novel deserved it's 4.8 rating, not to mention the amazing translations and super fast uploads as well. Brilliant read :) !

The cover and description are a bit misleading! The novel is really badass!I thought it will be abt a yao leading normal daily life trying to get to uni but it's not! It's a fun filled adventure story, very sweet and touching. And it really teaches u things about life. The story itself might not be one of the most unique out there but it's def not cliche too. Most importantly the closure is quite satisfying.

Read for the fluff but not the plot.

You thought that this story was about a yaoguai struggling his way to become a great person in human society. No it was chinese digimon playing house in human world.

It was so boring from time to time. After Fu Li show his power. The lack of faces laps was over.

Fu Li has multiple personality , can't tell his smart, or dumb but he's no innocent but they keep showing that he is. I CANT PINPONT HIS CHARACTER SETTINGS. He's kind and nice that's... more>> it.

Also this whole civil servant thing is unrelevant. More like a gimmick for Fu Li as a goal to move along the story.

Romance should've been much earlier not near the end. Alot of filter chapters ruins the story.

The thing I like best for emotional point of FL reuniting with his elders that's the highlight. Previous life thing had no impact because FL wasn't even bothered really.

I see people gave 5 stars for the fluff and their relationship.

But other people don't get misted, you will not like the plot and will get bored if you're here for the story instead <<less

P.S. The links are not completely dead, just go to Chrysanthemum Garden's website and follow the instructions to get the password. It's worth the trouble because this story is very fun, very cute, very sweet! Goes right down like a quality milk tea, without the chewiness of boba or many complex flavours.

There is very little suspense and the stakes are relatively low for a novel with this kind of premise, but the scenes are rendered well and the philosophy is sound. Reading it was a smooth and pleasurable experience even... more>> if it's not something I'm raring to consume a second time. Four stars. <<less

Welp, this novel is one heck of a treat for me. I don't understand why not many people are talking about it in the group I entered but I really highly recommend this one.

Although it doesn't really conform to the title, it's still an incredible read with a lot of actions, fluff, humour, and you know, understanding of the human (and yao) nature.

I love the adorable, innocent yet powerful MC along with the stingy and cute ML. Their interactions bring a lot of color.

This novel is... amazingly cute (or cutely amazing?).

I actually skipped this novel several times because the title didn't met my aesthetic. But now that I have time to rumage through my unread novel recommendations I found that this novel is so cute and heartwarming that I regret not reading this sooner.

I'm not really good at describing the novel, but— the combination of cultivation and modern settings in this novel is not weird at all. All the characters (be it the main, side or passerby) got their own allure.

Anw, the author's... more>> style of writing is great, and so far, the translator also done a good job in presenting this cute gem. I hope many people also notice this gem. <<less

MTL up to Chapter 112 then skipped to the end.

Overall, it's a heartwarming story, no intrigue, no revenge no scheming, just pure daily life of cultivators in modern era.

The romance development was turtle slow. Because the MC was super dense and naive. He's also OP, lucky coincidence happen to him all the time.

Thankfully he's not the snobbish type of protagonist who often looking for trouble. He's exactly the opposite, helping others no matter where he goes.

A HE story.

Updated: Finished reading translator's version. As another reviewer wrote, it's very cute and heartwarming. Similar to American urban fantasy novels, a secret government agency polices hidden shapeshifters amongst the human population.

In particular, animal spirits ("yao"), have cultivated until they can shapeshift to human and develop super powers. The MC is Fu Li, a gentle, humble, law-abiding yao who awakens from his 2, 000 year sleep and enters a human city for the first time. As he learns about the human world and tries to make a living, he also learns... more>> about the great changes in the other yao. The MC shows unusual flashes of power and his animal form isn't revealed for a long time.

There is a Bureau that protects, legislates, polices, judges, and punishes the supernatural population to maintain order and allow them to secretly co-exist with humans. The ML is the cold boss of the Bureau, super powerful and ethical.

The world building was really good, the romance was well-paced, every story arc was well done and ended

, and I liked the large cast of Chinese mythological characters, including the grim reapers/yinchai. Little things, like the lobby painting, the little sparrow, the old myths, the little girl, etc., all come up again in the story, so the story is very well plotted.

The translation is excellent, and this author is one of my favourite authors. Her characters are complex and well-written. There are no lazy stereotypes in her novels.

The entire cast is a joy to read. <<less

This was a fantastic reading. I devoured story in 2 days because I just couldn't put it down.

MC Fu Li, can be said to be naive, but definitely not s*upid or innocent. His naivete is only because he was away from the world for 2000 years. He is resourceful and extremely powerful and hella adorable. Esp his original form.

ML Zhuang Qing is OP as well. Their relationship growth is just too beautiful.

Overall a feel good story with a bit of lahgh out loud comedy and some dramatical moments with a... more>> touch of cry-happy tears towards the end.

Definitely 100% recommend this read <<less
