Smiling Proud Wanderer, as a novel, is an incredible shame. Such a well thought out piece of writing with incredible depth in politics, interesting world-building, and some fantastic characters, is marred by the complete incompetence of others. Like many of Jin Yong's works, the storytelling in Smiling Proud Wanderer is fantastic. There is always something that is dangled in front of you, and you keep reading because you want to know. Coupled with a series of interesting and creative scenarios where the bigger picture is always in the back of... more>> your mind, there are many reasons for you to keep reading through all four volumes. The story twists and turns. Characters are written very deeply and their motives, which are present and hinted at from very early in the story, come to fruition even volumes later. Unexpected events are frequent, and these events come from a wide range of characters who all have their own merits. Almost every character, besides the MC, that is. Linghu Chong is one of the most unintelligent, frustrating, and naïve characters that I have ever seen in a story. He is at times completely incapable of even putting 2 and 2 together when the writing is on the wall, seemingly because his incompetence is required for the story to progress. He is a stain on what is otherwise a fantastic piece of storytelling, and a very big one at that. If character density is something that frustrates you, you will not like this novel. At all. If it's something that you can look past to see the solid storytelling in an interesting world that Jin Yong has created, this novel is a good choice. <<less

Masterpiece and milestone. If you didn't read it yet, you're nothing. Someone pissed of this story. They'll be regret after grown up. Don't be in their shoes too. This world has no regret medicine yet.

BTW, there's a fly in the oil. To fully comprehend this novel, you've to have knowledge of the tumorile politics of the world around 1960s. By that time, there were lots of power factions. Each nation leader backstabbed each other. Politicians of each nation did that to their nation's too. Peasant had to be on one... more>> side, so that they could die in peace.

No one lived peacefully and carefree from the power of smile-while-killing wind. Jin Yong distilled this world/national bad wind into this novel.
Yes, world class.

So, brace yourself, prepare your mind, dive in!

Not recommend for budding reader who think he/she knows everything in the world from reading through the internet, and your backyard is the end of this world. <<less

I do not care what grandfather of wuxia author is... the protagonist is so s*upid sometimes I want to punch him in his dumb face. And it’s so annoying that he whines and cries about his little martial sister all the time... fk her!!! And sometimes he’s such a goody two shoes that I wonder what he is... martial artist or fking saint. And in late chapters when he had already learned badass martial arts he still got defeated and humiliated by some granny.... so lame. I so much prefer... more>> (most) xianxia heroes than this type of guy. <<less

My review?

As in many other reviews, I can tell you that the storyline and the world (worldbuilding) is great, but the main character is really boring... I mean... he is maybe fitting for a 'MC's Senior Brother' kind of role... but for him to be the MC... it really destroyed the story for me...

Anyway, the main reason I am leaving the review is to note the chapter after which I dropped reading the novel (about 15 months as of the date of posting) so if I ever want to torture... more>> myself more, I know where to continue from, because NU doesn't have manual chapter number input, and they allow bunching together multiple chapters in a post... I would really like if they change one of those things. (as a programmer, I assume it would be easier just to add a manual chapter number input in the system...) <<less
