I’ll Be the Male Lead’s Sister-in-Law

Description

Today, I am a substitute for your fiancee. Tomorrow, I’ll become your sister-in-law!

Mu Mingtang is the substitute of the male lead’s first love. After she lost her family, she was adopted by the Jiang family and eventually became engaged to the male lead, the Prince of Jin.

Understanding very well that she was only a substitute, she removed her claws and fangs and turned herself into an imitation of the Prince of Jin’s first love. She couldn’t speak or laugh as she wished, she was prepared to live in the shadow of another woman for her entire life… until one day, the real Miss Jiang returned.

The real Miss Jiang was reborn. When she learned that she was the male lead’s first love, she immediately returned to fight for her engagement and identity.

In order to please his first love, the Prince of Jin gave the substitute to the Prince of Qiyang, who had become a dying madman. She was just a low-quality fake, anyway. If she dared to anger his first love, he would turn her into a childless and powerless widow for the rest of her life.

Mu Mingtang, the target of their mockery, finally snapped: Okay, since you gave me to another man, I’ll make you bow and call me sister-in-law!

However, none of them expected the Prince of Qiyang, the God of War, to actually wake up!

Xie Xuanchen is the son of the late emperor. The whole world once trembled beneath his feet, but one day, for a reason unknown to even Xie Xuanchen himself, his nature suddenly changed. He became cruel and bloodthirsty, leaving his father with no choice but to pass the throne to his uncle.

Eventually, Xie Xuanchen was unable to resist the illness and fell into a coma.

When he woke up again, there was a beauty standing before his bed, looking at him in surprise. Then, for the sake of his domineering little princess, he revived his name as the God of War, reclaimed the throne, and united the world.

I once captured the world to satisfy my own ambition. Now, you are the reason for my ambition.

There were a lot of stuff that bore me out in this novel, like the romance, for example. I have no problem with slow romance but atleast give me a satisfying one, alright? Not only is the romance in this novel slow, but it is also unsatisfying. The villains were horribly shallow, and I couldn't feel the thrill because everyone is scared of ml.

Spoiler

Jiang Girl has already lived two lifetimes but still s*upid. You couldn't feel any threat from the villains. Everyone also fears the ML and no one comes to bother him, so everything was at most predictable to me. The physician said that ML would die after the new year so emperor was like "its not a bother to wait for more since i've already waited 2 years" then after that, ML was still alive and healthy but the emperor didn't bother making a move until like 5 months later bruh. Author rarely switches perspective and is always focused on the leads, so you wouldn't feel that the villains are plotting something new.

[collapse]

I got really bored around chapter 99 and although I know the next chapter a war would happen, I'm not really curious about it anymore.

Spoiler

Well nothing new, ML won the war because his opponent underestimated him even when knowing he's the god of war and many beirong people suffered under him just a few years ago. I mean dude, who tf acts arrogantly so like this as a commander?

Also, the emperor who seemed to care so much about his reputation sent off ML with 3k troops against a hundred thousand. Idk why the author likes to put almost everything in the pov of FL also. It's just so boring since all she does is worry. It would be better to put the story in pov of ML or the emperor for a while for a change, why does it always have to be in the pov of FL who does nothing ??

[collapse]

There were so many glaring plotholes in this novel that was impossible to ignore, so I could only give this a flat 3.0

Completed because I don't like dropping novels i've read through halfway. <<less

I've read until chapter 48, which is the 198th chapter translated, and so far I consider this one of the best novels from the author.

The characters are well defined and interesting, with past full of hardship and yet still capable of being kind to each other and feeling hope. The relationship between the leads flows organically, they marry pretty soon in the story and although intimacy is still a little bit far off, their interactions is 80% of the book and it's sweet and funny at the same time. They... more>> have such a fun rapport with each other, it would be easy to read a book just about their daily lives.

Plotwise: No chapter is useless and something important happens in each one of them. The mystery unfurls slowly and it's really a mystery what exactly happened to the ML and why.

Unfortunately it seems that it's dropped? I hate to read MTL but I don't know if I can wait for someone to translate the rest (if it will ever be translated).

Also, their first encounter is one of the most romantic ever, my old heart warms whenever I think about it *-* <<less

I’ve mtled this and it is a good read.
No dog blood. Not much misunderstanding. Both protagonist are straightforward.

If you like OP ML, this is for u.

Also I like their journey from being at top then suddenly life pulled them down and they both supported each other on climbing again.

the only thing I’d nitpick is the way translation is like modern language instead of the actual timeline. Other than that, it’s good 👍

I came into this not having much expectations having read the reviews but now that I have read it, first the translation before moving onto reading it from JJWXC with my rusty Chinese because I couldn't wait... It doesn't necessarily seem like plot holes.

Spoiler

For example, someone pointed out that Jiang Mingwei despite being reincarnated, hasn't done much but I think that's because people forget that her experiences and knowledge of the original timeline are hazy at best given that she spent years away in Beirong. Unlike other transmigration stories, she is working with essentially no information besides bits of clues she overheard. All she knows is Xie Xuanji becomes the emperor and that Xie Xuanchen passes sometime before the war. As a foreign concubine, she would have little experience being the wife and how to manage the household, especially since she was pampered by her family prior. On top of all of that, she was remarked by her own mother to not be very sensible outright, and we can infer that she is pretty brainless with how she routinely needed to be coaxed by her own parents. I think, actually, the biggest clue of how s*upid she is was that she even eloped to begin with in the original timeline, as if she is unaware of how foreigners, or concubines are treated. I don't know why people feel dissatisfied with her character as if she failed her potential when she was explicitly written to be someone that shallow and insipid.

And that is okay, because in real life, people can be that s*upid. Not everyone is a complex, conniving human being. If anything, I enjoyed her being so useless because it plays with the transmigrator trope where one typically essentially manipulates everyone else for their own agenda.

[collapse]

I don't think this book is one that you are even meant to take seriously, given how overpowered ML is, and how well-established he was by the age of 19 despite being sick for 2 years... So he essentially did all that by 17. I think it's funny that besides all that, both ML and MC are just teenagers. I liked how both their characters and their relationship developed and how they played off each other. I do think some parts were too draggy, and the ending was a little rushed but otherwise... I enjoyed it. <<less

I really like the way they communicate, ML like to teased the MC, making her pissed off, and he was like 'yeah I'm a pain in the ass, but what you gonna do about it, you still love me so much', he's the most clingy and shameless ML I ever know.

Spoiler

The part I don't like is, there this one time the ML was drunk, and he doesn't recognise the MC and they had s*x. I don't like they had s*x that way, someday random girl can make ML drunk and slept with him idk. Or is it I read / translated wrong?

I'm not gonna rate this but I'm dropping this because of how they handled the mental issues:

Spoiler

ML is supposed to be a mental patient. When the FL unlocked him, ML injured (but for sure I read killed) the soldiers guarding him. I felt disappointed that the FL didn't feel remorse or didn't think through her actions (that a lot of people got hurt). Yes, it's bad he's chained (current emperor chaining him for nefarious reasons) but as a mental patient that goes berserk it should have been a precaution. I hoped that the author could've somehow added a physician character to advise them when it's okay to unchain him. And not the FL feeling "oh poor you, let's unchain you and AFTER you injure everyone I'll be the one to stop you" Pssh!

[collapse]

I don't know how they do solve this but from reading the other spoilers it doesn't seem like it... <<less

I came to read this after finishing 'I Became the step mother of my ex husband', because that novel just made me feel like I was watching a drama similar to Story of Ming Lan (albeit less complicated). But this story completely differs from the former and in a good way.

I finished this by mtl (as the translation is still ongoing but my binge reading a*s couldn't wait) , which was fairly understandable and the flow of the story is so nice that I didn't even notice it was mtl-ed... more>> half of the time.

Now about the plot, I have to say that it was fairly written and focuses more on character development rather than power struggles and all, we get to meet our main leads, both of whom are very much beaten up by their respective lives and once their lives intersect, they begin to heal each other and grow our of their past and move on. I absolutely adore the relationship between the leads and enjoy their banter so much, and thus I am willing to not be discouraged by some small plot holes.
Spoiler

Like how the Emperor just sits around doing nothing to our ML after the New Year Banquet, maybe this can be explained by the fact that they found 'assassins' previously and there were some border tensions, coupled with the fact that ML was much better than before and the Emperor couldn't really focus on him much. My only doubt was how ML proceeds to out and socialize with others and people don't bat an eye like dude was indeed famous for his 'crazy' episodes of killing and people would p*ss themselves if he was anywhere near them and then suddenly they all forget about his previous actions as of it was all a hoax

[collapse]

About the relationship between the leads, man it's too sweet and adorable.
Spoiler

It's the troupe of ML saves young girl who is the FL and later on she decides to repay him with herself. Bleh. Don't be mistaken, the story gives a nice and cute charm to this overused plot and it's so adorable that it made my cheeks hurt from ginning. ML previously saved the FL when her hometown was attacked and she had always admired him so when she finds out that the infamous crazy guy she married was actually her saviour, she decides to wholeheartedly try to save him. ML saved her when she was at her lowest point and FL in turned dragged him away from the clutches of death and despair that he had subjected himself to. I love how the ML having fallen from his peak suffers from despair but slowly regains hope to live. The leads both support each other, trust each other and rely on each other and if that isn't the definition of wholesome then idk what is. It's very much understandable how and why the ML's obsession (in a really healthy way) for the FL began.

[collapse]

It was a very good read, and I'd like to thank the translator for working hard to provide us with good translations. <<less

I finished this novel by MTL, and it didn't matter. While not perfect, the characters and story were great. I loved the interdependence of the MC and the ML's near obsession for the FL. I would love to see this novel turned into a series or movie. It was that good!

3.5/5

Love this couple especially the ML. He's a total badass but when it comes to FL, he's soooo childish. He's always acting cutesy and dotes on her alot though sometimes, he can come off as being bipolar.

Some parts of the novel don't make sense eg the part where he's supposedly mad and chain to his bed with super heavy reinforced chains and heavily guarded by the emperor who wants to kills him unsuspectingly. However, after FL picked the locks of the chain and freed him, the emperor no longer locks... more>> him up and they can walk about the mansion freely? Then later after New Years, the emperor didn't try new plots to kill him but left him alone for months???? Maybe the emperor has amnesia lol

I think this book would be better if we had seen the 2nd ML (original ML in the title) get some faceslapping. <<less

Loved this! ML and FL have such a sweet relationship, and no misunderstandings! They have great communication and trust. And the plot is paced really well, and never got boring. It's has more than just romance, but the other elements never overshadow it and it's not complicated at all. I completed the novel with MTL and it was surprisingly readable, and very easy to understand! It also isn't dragged out, it's a nice (relatively) short read. I also loved the extras at the end!

ML and FL also end up having a really cute son!

It's romantic and fluffy, with a solid storyline and character development/world-building.

10/10 recommend.

This is a novel worth Mtl-ed, the plot is not boring cuz the writer did a good job in mixing love story and politic story well. I love both leads, they really have a good chemistry, and I love how their relationship slowly build up into a mighty wall.

Ps. The male lead is so OP, but I still adore him cuz he can turn into a drama queen instantly when FL in sight LOL.

Forcing myself to continue reading this because it is a decent story but...

Here are some cons:

1. I don't know if its because of the translator or the author's writing style itself but the words used in this Ancient China setting is too modernized and makes me feel uncomfortable when reading the novel. For example: "It's okay I guess" was a sentence used by the ML in one of the chapters. It just felt jarring and weird. Some things like car instead of carriage. Lights instead of lantern was also pointed... more>> out by another reviewer. It's just the way some sentences are phrased that made me think of the characters in this novel as modern actors just acting in an Ancient China movie.

2. The story drags on for far too long with significant details and storylines. It could be the translator cutting one original chapter into several chapters making it seem even more draggy.

For example, FL and ML find out there's a suspicious spice ball in their living area and someone then dies. Suspicious things are happening and you'd think the story will go onto schemes and truth-searching but no, the author then writes about the reborn girl's (she's technically not oriFL so I'm just calling her reborn girl Jiang Mingwei) problems with oriML (Xie Xuanji) and the concubine at home. After that its them playing games at a courtship meetup. Games!! Why do I need to spend several chapters reading about FL and ML playing games together when there's something far more serious still going on.

Author just loves to write about scenes where FL and ML can talk and deepen their love for one another and thus throwing dogfood all around. It is nice to have the romance but it is pretty slow as well. I guess I am just disappointed and sad that the scheming and mystery regarding ML's illness then becomes a sidenote and its merely written into the story when its convenient.

It is just a drag and makes me think that the ML is making no effort to do anything. I feel that author should have written some behind-the-scenes kind of espionage or scheming by the ML to figure things out.

3. The antagonists are far too dumb imo. Especially oriML who is so narcissistic thinking our FL likes him when he's just a tool for her to have a good life initially before he threw her away.

4. THE REPETITION!!!! It's as if the author thinks the readers have goldfish memory and have to be reminded of things over and over again. For example, Song guy who made our ML mad and then his prime minister father punished him. We got the info he got punished and a few chapters later, the same points are repeated despite having little to do with the story. Another example is Xie Xuanji thinking, oh Mu Mingtang really doesn't love me and really loves Xie Xuanchen, oh I don't know how to feel about this. Goddamn this repeats so often.

Anyway I'm holding on first in hopes that it'll get better. <<less

Ok, this couple/ CP is the cutest!

Overall they plot is a bit more fresh than usual. The main character is not the one who travelled back into the past and the ML is also dead in that future so you don’t really know what’s going to be in store for them. I actually quite like the MC’s personality, it feels more like a proper character than just a trope.
The romance is not rushed and it’s nice to see it develop slowly.

My main problem with it is it’s sometimes difficult to understand the time scale of... more>> this, it gets confusing at times as they make it seem like a longer time period was passed when it was less. It’s a bit difficult to wrap your head around it.

my other complain is the side characters can often feel 2 dimensional with similar personalities. Not as bad as most other novels but don’t expect well formed side characters <<less

Still on the early chapter but let's talk it down a little bit.

The main plot is interesting but the story build is NG. There is too many loophole, unrealistic personality, scene, ect. The plot is written orderly and clean but not a bit this whole story could make me feel engrossed to the story. I can't feel the connection with any of the character. Sometimes I feel that the author tend to give details on wrong part and ignore the main part.

But as I said the main story or plot... more>> is interesting. It could be just a matter of taste.

Spoiler

miss jiang

It's clear she is a dropped character. Mean that her only purpose in the story is to build the story without her being able to be portrayed as a real characters. Her personality so far is too monotone. There is a bad human, but even bad human had their clear reason to act that way and sometimes they could not always bad, there is a time where they'll be sad, kind, weak, angry, and such. Emotion is a complex way and so far I couldn't sense this from her character.

[collapse]

Spoiler

MC

Idk how to feel about her, she has a good foundation and setting too but with how I see the whole novel at early chapter, I truly doubt the author will be able to bring out her character. I love the basic complicated emotion she had when she is in that Jiang family, how she had to suppress her real characters for the sake survive in there, but the whole writing really couldn't bring that feeling out. Instead of able to felt the conflict, the author just send her back to her original characters in a no time. This is where I felt sad on how the author didn't detailed some part of the story, but then write to much narrative on the thing isn't really important.

[collapse]

Instead of a life story novel, it felt like a children story where the emotion only being portrayed with one or two characteristics. Like the wolf is bad, the sheep is weak th grandmother is kind and such. <<less

MTL readability: good.

I've read several of the author's books. This certainly is not a poorly written book, but I prefer some of her other works. The characters here are not as well-defined and the romance left something to be desired. I think if I hadn't read her other books, I would have loved this book. Nevertheless, I did enjoy having an OP ML.

A few of her other good books are: It's Better to be Empress Dowager; I Became My Ex-husband's Stepmother; The Crown Prince in the Pendant; Greetings, Ninth Uncle.... more>> That was written in order of preference. I love, love the MLs in the first two books. <<less

I immediately give it a five star because this novel deserves this.

I love everything on this novel. The character, antagonist, flow of the story, plot, everything is a chef's kiss to me.

ML is really such a lucky bastard. He met MC on his darkest days and he could stand up because he have the reason to live. He wanted to be with her together with their kids until old age.

The uncle of the ML (which is the Emperor) is an a**hole. A chicken who's pretending a dragon—how 'bout I turn... more>> you as a fried chicken?!

Okay, the son of the uncle... I kinda pity him (not really). You check it out of why is that. I kinda tired of telling spoilers.

Best ML character development!

Having seen all those stories with arrogant powerful and invincible ML's that only are vulnerable when it comes to the MC, I feel this is way better in comparison. Well our prince An, does have some of those characteristics too, but in view of the whole picture, you can see a man struggling with himself, depressed when sick, and hopeless about the future, turn into someone with hope, ambition and love. I have had experiences with people who are very sick, or have been bad injured, and... more>> go through a tough time with their feelings and emotions while they are sick. It doesn't matter what kind of people they were before, sometimes illness changes them so unrecognisably. They become vulnerable, self-deprecative and all sorts of things they were not before. And the journey of recovery and healing is just so much more than about physical health, it requires new found confidence and courage. This story just did so much justice to the portrayal of sick people in stories. Our great god Qiyang is extremely strong and scary, but even he is not invincible with illness. This is worth reading for this point alone.

Not the best writing ever, but it has its strong points, and I love it for that. <<less
