Grabbing Your Hand, Dragging you Away

I am a princess, moreover, I am a fool of a princess.

Born in the imperial palace, my appearance is as average as that of the white radish and cabbages in the fields. Throughout the four seasons of the year, my face is always displaying a dull expression, eyes forever shrouded in haze.

But in reality, I know of the secrets within this palace.

Including hers, his, and theirs.

Just leisurely living my days comfortably in the palace like this, I firmly believe I can continue to play dumb to the end.

Taking your hand, dragging you away. Not leaving, you say? Very well, close the doors and release the hounds. (Expressionless face)

I really enjoy this MC, much more than I thought I would. We see things from her POV (her side monologues are the best), and she's clearly extremely perceptive, even the small things she notes in passing, she uses to play a larger part later in her analysis of the events and people around her.

Spoiler

I am 20 chapters into this and my OTP is the MC and Ying Lu, and I don't even like yuri. F*#@ the rest of them, those two are the only ones so far who deserve to be happy and I want them to be happy together, along with Xiao Hei.

Edit: (12/8/17)

Spoiler

Now at chapter 65, another reviewer said this, but it's true: the truly wonderful people are all the siblings. I also agree that the MC should just gather her twin, Ying Lu, He Xing Yan, and Bai Wei together and run off to a happily ever after with them, along with Xiao Hei and Xiao Bai. They're the only ones who deserve happiness! Although I do feel some sympathy for He Lian Chen, I don't like how he treats women.

I did not like the story, the protagonist play a s*upid person but never stop playing to be s*upid. I was thinking the MC would be scheming and do thing in secret but no she is but an object that is taken left and right even by people she don't know.

The majority of the story is about how the MC think but it has no incident on the story because she will do the fool event if her life is in danger.

My first time to write a review.

This novel brought to ecstacy to continously read it. The MC, Ah-Lan, is depicted as a fool princess but in fact she doesn't want to involve with the others. She knows many secret but stayed like a fool for a long time. The real reason she acted like this will be told in the story.

The ML is your everyday black-bellied one, not everyday, but just like other novel with black-bellied ML. He is likeable and also has his own agenda.

Other male leads, they are... more>> quite good but ambitions over clouded what is important to them and thus can't win over our MC. Well, the ML already took the first start, so the others are late to begin with.

The story will show how Ah-Lan decided to face her problem in her past life. She started to trust the ML and will believe him.

Romance is good, although some might find it slow, but it is good for the development.

Some side stories will reveal the people which MC interacted with, you will see their thoughts after the MC died in her past life.

Overall, the MC isn't your ordinary ruthless Chinese FL, good story with good romance.

This is my first review, so I might be not that good <<less

Yeah, this is a good read. It's fun and also *just a bit* emotional novel that makes you think/see how cynical a person can be when you go through what the MC experienced. It's simple but impacting.

There are also times you'll feel irritated on how indifferent she can be to a person or situation but mostly, I just find the MC hillarious ?

As expected from xiaoxiaomei, the projects she picks up are really good and the quality TL is superb! ?

Loving this unique take on the transmigration genre which is a guilty pleasure. The way the MC is so uncaring of the overbearing male characters is kinda hilarious as they go all mysterious and menacing when all she wants is a carefree, full-of-food life. Looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

This is an unconventional transmigration story, about a girl who was hurt in her past life, then transmigrates and decides to just ignore all the problems surrounding her and live happily as a 'fool'.

She's a very cute character, and is not like other MCs. She's no Mary Sue, and doesn't have the conquer-the-world mentality. However, her 'foolishness' and 'ditziness' make for a wonderfully sweet character. The chapters are of satisfying length, and best of all the translation is done wonderfully.

I didn't enjoy this story as much as some of the other readers; it felt kind of pointless to me. FL pretends to be s*upid, is not breathtakingly beautiful, but all the males fall hopelessly in love with her and develops a possessive desire to own her. Despite this,

she is ultimately able to elope with the ML so easily. The ending was rather anti-climatic, with the FL and ML living happily and freely. And the three emperors just able to let go of the treasure map. Like for real?

And there was no resolution for any other characters, except two side stories for a sister and ex-boyfriend who hardly appeared in the main story. Towards the end, I was just reading for the conclusion, and kept asking myself, what was the point of this story?

There is a lot of this novel that individually would really annoy the heck out of me (mostly in the tags, so I'm not going to hide this behind spoilers) :

  • Something resembling a reverse harem (I can't even stand a love triangle. At least it only resembles one haha)
  • Female lead needing a lot of rescuing (a LOT)
  • Many men obsessed with the MC (read the tags.... and add on this is ancient times where women are commodities)
But somehow, all together, it really fit for me. The tags are... more>> not a joke. The MC appears to be apathetic for most of the novel, and there are reasons why. We see things completely from her perspective- which is trying to hide behind a "don't care about anything" mask to protect herself. You can't be quick to judge anyone in here
Spoiler

(except maybe the OG family)

- whether they give a good or bad first impression. There's actually a lot of depth to uncover. I found the writing style to be very charming- there's a lot of details that are missing that may have enriched our understanding of the different characters, but it really worked out here. There's a lot of emotion in between the lines. And while you should take the tags seriously... this summary.... Let's just say that the entire novel is actually quite emotional and a lot heavier than I expected, especially considering how light hearted the summary is, and how nonchalant the POV seems to be. Some of the scenes just hit hard. <<less

It should be highlighted that there's a comedic undertone throughout the story from beginning to end (at least until ch. 82). Really hilarious without being nonsensical or immature. There's a lot of cultural background for many pranks mentioned in the novel, but the translator really put into a lot of effort to convey the meaning behind them.

Don't expect much brain or action input from the MC because she's truly lazy, which oddly enough doesn't take the charm from the plot because she holds many secrets from many of the characters... more>> and doesn't overreact through most of the difficulties. Enjoy reading this novel! <<less

Tbh, I never liked this kind of passive FL, however, I kept thinking that perhaps she'll be strong sooner. But no, I really can't keep going. From all the love interests, they look very possessive of her, but they're more interested in power. Between power and her, they'll choose the former. It's like they're toying her emotions and made her like an amus**ent, a taste of peace or someone to confide to. And the FL was indifferent to that. She's just like go with the flow. So what if she... more>> knows a lot of secrets? It's just that. I can feel her exhausted feelings though. She's indifferent but somehow, she gave the feeling of being tired from everything, that's why she became numb. However, knowing that and accepting that are two different things. I don't like how passive she was. She's pitiful (for me) but she doesn't care about that. Truly, with or without the FL, the love interests will still have an in depth character. They'll live without her. I think, the FL's main role here is being the narrator. Anyway, I really can't go on. Can anyone tell me who she ended up with? All of the love interests are scheming and too exhausting, so who won in the end?

Spoiler

So it turns out Yuwen Rui's the ML? I mean, he definitely has the advantage, even the FL's affection (albeit not that much). He's not bad, but the fact that he got engaged with the FL's twin sister and then there's quite a lot of peach blossoms surrounding him is still a no to me. I think it's too taxing.

[collapse]

Tbh, I kinda have a thing with male yanderes (only in fiction, alright?), but the thing is, they have to be loyal to the FL. Not acting obsessively with the FL but still being connected with other women. <<less

Guys.... I really dont understand how is this good. All characters really got into my nerves. Why are they so obsessed with MC?? And why can't the author just make MC keeps acting like fools to get her watches more gossips (bcs tbh I think this is the only interesting thing in this story) ?

I have to say all those men really dont have any redeemable quality bc I think the author had never really tried to make their character more interesting other than being obsessed w MC and being... more>> smart (and somehow have an oh-so-sad past story). <<less

As with my more recent review format, no ratings, just my thoughts.

For some reason, I keep coming back to read this novel. Sure, it's not a perfect story. It has many flaws, but despite them, I enjoyed this story. I think for me, the type of protagonist the MC is appeals to me. She is mostly a passive observer of the world, and doesn't do much to actively influence it. However, she is acutely aware of her surroundings and the action that unfolds. This leads to an interesting story.

The main... more>> flaw (I think) about this novel is the number of kidnappings that happen. It must be a crazy life to be kidnapped so many times. To be honest, I think it might be because that is the most threatening to the ML, but seriously, it's a lot of kidnappings.

Overall, a good read and would recommend. I don't think I've quite found another novel than has such an 'observer' as a protagonist.

Addendum:

I've finished reading the novel again. Still the banger I remember it to be. I have to say though, FL has the walls of Jericho built around her heart at the beginning of the novel. Her attitude kinda reminds me of 'To Be a Virtuous Wife' and 'The Job of an Imperial Concubine' - basically, the philosophy is 'prove your sincerity'. I am a little disturbed on the number of times she was kissed against her will, and it still stands that there was way too many kidnappings. The most straightforward character, also FL's only true friend is one of the best in the novel. Once again, a recommendation if you enjoy this kind of novel. <<less

This was a great book- I ended up binging it in two days. The main character is likable and pretty. As the description says, she puts on an act of being foolish but is still quite intelligent. The story sort of happens in chunks in different locations so you can get to know different characters deeper as she stays with them. There are a few people who like her so it’s more than a love triangle, but it’s not outrageous to the point of throwing away a nation as some... more>> comments would have you believe. Also, the male lead I felt was pretty clear from the beginning, and I like his overbearing character a lot. My only complaint is that I personally felt the ending was a little weak, but it wasn’t terrible by any means. I would recommend this book. <<less

i loved the start. MC is hilarious to me. I laughed alot. I also cried alot since her back story and her emotions, experiences and thoughts are heavy on my heart. The point of view that the story is written from is perfect since its like your inside the mc's mind while she herself sort of views the world as a detatched person since she doesnt want to care about anything since caring would cause her to be hurt which she doesnt want anymore. Other novels tell a story and... more>> you are a reader. But the MC here is more humanand you experience things with her since she is analyzing stuff and judging the actions of those around her and those assesments are shared with the reader. <<less

This is the first that I’ve read with so many male leads. The thing about this is also the female lead does not show any reaction to which she like the most until nearing the ending. I guess it’s how it is as she was betrayed in the past life, now all she wants is having a man who loves her and her only.

Gosh this novel is the reason why I got interested in c novels.

Pros :

MC has the emotionless chara settings. You don't get to see a lot of those. And she isn't helpless, sure she might not be powerful or smart but that makes her very relatable and human.

... more>> The ML. Boi I was panicking over who the ML was. She got a good taste.

The ending is satisfying. They got together and cleared the misunderstanding. They traveled around and met MC ex from the modern world. Ex was desperate for MC, MC be like um chill anyway so

Cons :

I had my rose colored glasses on for this one. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel.

A lot of novels have outstanding female leads who have deep, tragic backstories or innocent female leads who experience hardships when they meet the male lead and grow with their lovers. And that's fine—every author has their way of making characters come to life, cliche as the setting might be.

What I really enjoyed about Ah-Lan is the realistic approach the author takes to what is clearly a deeply traumatic death. She needed time to come to terms with how miserably she ended up dying, but taking... more>> that time to recover did have consequences (her having the reputation of a fool). Ah-Lan clearly suffered, clearly had to fight to leave that mire of suffering, and she didn't have to be outstanding or widely admired to do it. I'd just like to commend this detail because it's not the kind of attention that female leads usually get that will help you pick yourself back up from such an affair, but personal strength of will. And Ah-Lan showed more of that strength of will when she chose to trust and love again.

Spoiler

But then again, Yuwen Rui really showed his sincerity :)

[collapse]

I have to admit that I don't trust male leads anymore ever since I finished reading Jianghu's Road is Curved.

I enjoyed the translation. In my opinion, it kept the original language's flavor, but just enough for immersion. The grammar is okay, just a few typos here and there that you can easily ignore since you just want to know what happens next.

Another thing I liked is the side characters. They're not cookie cutter and each of them can star in their own novel.
Spoiler

Just that, this one is about Ah-Lan and since it's it's about Ah-Lan, then clearly, it's also about Yuwen Rui.

[collapse]
So tough luck hahaha

It's not a perfect novel, but in my opinion it is a well-written one. It's not overbearingly intense or dense, and it isn't too light-hearted either. It has a nice combination of both light and dark that adds to the depth of the emotions the characters are experiencing. <<less
