As a translator, I really have mixed views about this novel. I really loved it when I first read it, but then as time passed, the novel slowly deteriorated into a chaotic mess that no one really knew how to take in. In the end, everyone (koreans) began to hate this novel, and throw insults at it. I still love the novel, as a first korean wuxia novel that I ever read. But if I were to look at it now, I think I’d place it more along the “mediocre”... more>> pile. <<less

Unusual, but really good. Deserves to be in the top 10 of all Asian LN.

There are also intense fights from time to time, especially as the novel goes on, but it doesn’t have continuous mind-numbing tension like PMG or ATG, which is great and adds balance.

There are many factions that are introduced and dynamics between characters that are developed, which slows the pace down a bit.

Too bad the translation speed is slow, since the story is getting really good right now.

Impressions as of Ch. 50.

King Shura very much reminds me of Ze Tian Ji and Jiang Ye (both by Mao Ni). The writing is languid and unhurried. The author doesn’t try to elicit violent feelings within the reader, rather the prose flows to show simply what the characters are feeling by simple and effective dialogue. You don’t get an overall sense of anxiety or tension that you find in other works like Against The Gods.

The author is building the scenes and the world patiently, never throwing a huge wall of... more>> info-dump. There is no reason to throw paragraphs about levels or geography because ultimately the series is about the MC crossing paths with a handful of important characters after entering the martial world. Of note is the official illustrations (usually one per chapter) at the translator's site.

But 50 chapters in I’m not sure how the story would end in 307 chapters according to the info sidebar. Which is fine because I enjoy looking forward to the next chapter.

Don’t let the word “maths” detract you from reading this, it’s just a label. It can be called Dao or leylines and the effects is the same. Basically the MC is gifted with an ability to perceive things as they are in numbers and formulae. An anime simile would be Shiki’s Mystic Eyes from Tsukihime which sees lines instead of numbers. Anyways it is a plot device for the MC, like Chen Chang Shang’s prodigious memory in Ze Tian Ji. The reader doesn’t need to think too much about the mechanics.

There isn’t much action thus far, and in what there was the MC wasn’t even directly involved as he is still a ‘normal’ person as yet.

The translation is good.

However, now that I know the quality of the writing (which admittedly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea), I do wish the translation is a little faster, or that I decided to read when there were more chapters. <<less

62 chapters in and the main character has yet to practice martial arts or really interact with anyone beyond his teacher.

Great novel with a different view from the usual xianxia novels. It focuses more on the intelectual side and shows what can be done with brains instead of brawns. Translation still in the early stages and the story plot doesnt move as fast as other xianxia where the protagonist gains power overnight. So hopefully we will get to see a very interesting prota.

One of th emost under rated novels here. I'm gonna keep this short. There really is no novel that explains and uses formations like this. The character and premises are wonderful. The translator is awesome and I read ensj's review of it myself and I guess rn, there's very few KN being translated that's similar to this. Most of the KN we have here are post apocalypse. This is a breath of fresh air.

It's a great wuxia series. Most webnovels feel very rushed to me, but, despite the MC having the standard superpowers of infinitely fast strength growth and op special techniques, the author somehow makes King Shura's pace feel natural.
Unfortunately, the series has been dropped by Seonbi Novels. The translator says that he plans to come back to in in February, after he's done college applications, but we all know how reliable that is. He's said that he doesn't mind if another group picks it up, so if any Korean-speakers read... more>> this, please help! <<less

Awesome stuff
character building is step by step with the story, viewpoint isn't from the mc's only
awesome tidbit details and a little bit romance (as of ch.82)
basically the story focus is not only the MC, like usual xianxia and wuxia (ofc it's not, the novel is not considered as one anyway...)
Worth the Read ! it comes with a beautiful drawing of chapter scene also!

One of the best novels out there. The story is not fast or slow, just perfect. We have an MC that is developing, slowly, in our eyes and we can root for. Unlike other novels is not about training and then getting strong but about using smarts + getting strong slowly but cool-y?

However, the translation seemed to be stopped since it's been 2 months since a new ch has been translated. I don't know if is dropped or not.

I like the MC even the translation a bit slow (when I like a story, I really hope the translation is fast). It's fun to read. I like the strength, luck and cool+cold act of the character Cho Ryu Hyang when he is still a kid. I read the story many times while waiting for the update. What special of this story is when he solve all fights with mathematics which is uncommon in the martial type of novel. So it feels a new breath feeling brings by the... more>> author. However, the story progress is quite slow, until 100 chapter, the story is still around the young+kid age. I'm waiting for any challenge when he comes to the teen or a young adult man. His teacher is so cool and likes to play around his disciple. So the relationship between this teacher-disciple is quite cute for me. And other relationship (the teacher's daughter) cannot say too much, it still in early stage. <<less

4/5 review (if not for the side stories, I would have given it a 5/5)

This story starts of a bit crazy but gets awe-mazing after every chapter. It is not the typical story I would read, but this story is freaking great.

Seems like art museum written into pages, the writing is beautiful but not without meaning within it's context. Like art, it's never perfect nor is everything in textbook here (missing dynamic tension, flowing viewpoints) but what he does have works well with it, so I look forward to every chapter.

The translation is great, however the story in itself is more info dumping then a story. There writer doesn't seem to get the concept of a story needing tension. For example when the MC's father gets visited by an unknown man in the middle of the night, I the reader is like *yawn* due to the storytelling. Its not a bad story, however the telling of it ain't very good.

I intensely dislike this writing style. It's a style of writing a story very slowly, while covering basically every little detail of world-building. It sounds good on paper for some stories, but it is annoying to read.

This novel includes every single POV of every single character, and the amount of content we see from the main characters POV is annoyingly low. The main character will suddenly talk to someone new/important, then the story will very abruptly switch to some random person's POV so we will have to wait 10+ chapters... more>> to what happened to the main character. Almost all of these POV changes happen within the time frame, and theres quite a lot of repetition.

Aside from that, I despise how the author randomly decides to dump plot whenever theres a mildly interesting situation. It's like watching a movie, but whenever theres a action scene it forces you to solve a bunch of math problems. Why would anyone want to watch it?

Due to the horrid writing style, theres never any tension. After all, the POVs just going to switch whenever theres something important going on, so you either barely pay attention to the other POV or just forget what happened previously. I genuinely don't understand why you would write a story this way.

Overall, this story might've been interesting, but the writing style absolutely ruins it. The constant POV shifts and plot dumps ruin any interest I might've had in this story. The story at the start was pretty good, but the story started to become very diluted in various character's POVs. I don't recommend this novel. <<less

The story was built on very interesting premises, not merely physical power-up but also a lot of mind games. But the pace can be boring at times. And the character building is a bit confusing; up to the most recent chapter (56), I'm still confused on who is who, apart from the main protag and his teacher.

Want to talk about fast paced novels? Well here it is.. Within 30~ chapters we get to meet everyone needed to be met in this novel and more some.. Watching the MC become stronger and stronger just because hes a genius.. Okay not the worst, but the story's first 30-40 chapters is like watching a movie on 2x speed. The amount of detail is not great due to this and it just feels like you are getting just the jist of what you would want to know. I do recommend... more>> this as it is a interesting concept in a XianXia novel and all that jazz so give it a whirl. <<less
