Fake Saint Of The Year

[The Eternal Scattering Flowers: Fiore Caduto Eterna] is a game ill-suited of being known as a galge, as the main heroine would – regardless of the chosen route – meet her demise.

Fudou Niito, a resident of Japan, went to bed dissatisfied with the ending of the game. When he next awoke, he found himself in the body of the game’s hated fake saint, Elrise.

Confused, but with an understanding that Elrise’s actions would spell disaster for many lives in the future, he took advantage of the situation and acted to change the course of history.

As a result, despite her rotten personality, Elrise was adored by those around her as a perfect saint. Furthermore, the game itself was intrinsically linked to his original world and changed accordingly to suit Elrise’s actions. Without any knowledge of what the hell was going on, the fake saint Elrise continued to alter her fate.

A saint on the outside, but a man on the inside.

The transmigrator was a piece of sh*t and the person he transmigrated into was also a piece of shit. A combination of sh*t and sh*t would cause an accident – to create the greatest fake saint sh*tshow of the year!

I liked this, obviously not life changing literature but was light easy to read and fun in a trope-y way that was enjoyable.

While the MC is genderbent and girl crazy/slightly pe*verted it’s not to a point where he overtly takes advantage or is super creepy to anyone.

While the story is pretty predictable it didn’t feel drawn out or boring getting to the ending. The side stories and extras were also extremely enjoyable and helped to tie up some loose ends.

Overall this is a pretty well done OP protagonist with a... more>> great affect on their surroundings, and decent outside pov to appropriately ooh and ahh, which is satisfying. It’s a good read if you go in with light expectations. <<less

The novel is amazing. The author seemed to have a clear view when writing this story; he set up many things to be explained and explained them all. Not only that, but the character development was fairly good too!

Amazingly well-written story and great translations.

It was so funny! I love the author-sama’s sense of humor.

No wonder the rating is so high here! Let me contribute to that too hehe - 5 out of 5 stars ⭐️

The story is overall good but there are elements that drag it down. Several parts feel like they could be edited to have greater effect. It's short at only 89 chapters but there's still a bunch of unnecessary/pointless infodumps and repeated information. There are some developments that should have been foreshadowed or at least hinted at before being brought up abruptly, while others feel like the author spoiling their own story.

A few examples:

During one scene the action stops so the MC can internal-monologue about how she's wearing an mp-restoring flower... more>> on her head, then detail exactly how much MP each petal restores even though she's never actually used it. It's later used by another character in a fight but makes no difference in how that fight plays out.

A hugely important part of the saint/witch dynamic is nonchalantly spoiled early by the MC thinking to herself. In a later scene this info is later dramatically revealed up to other characters who react with appropriate levels of shock/horror. Shouldn't this have been revealed to the reader at the same time? Just because the MC knows in advance doesn't mean the reader has to.

The MC is OP in both magic and swordsmanship. She spends several paragraphs talking about how she invented a spell that lets her copy other people's swordsmanship in addition to training herself to be able to handle the demands it places on her body. She never actually fights with a sword, in all the fights she only uses spells.

Most of the story is told from the MC's perspective but there are sometimes POV shifts which repeat the last chapter as seen from someone else. Some of these work well, others are 80 percent the same other than the MC's dialogue sounding classier.

Finally the earth plotline is overcomplicated and takes up too much time considering the simple and inconsequential conclusion. Nothing in this story necessitated a sideplot concluding in an entire chapter explaining timeline mechanics. <<less

Since the other 5 star already say a lot about this masterpiece, I'm only gonna summarize my review of the good thing this novel has:

  • It is unique. Reborn as the villainess is the norm nowaday, but male-to-female reborn as a villainess is very rare and even more so for reborn as a villainess without the cliche reborn heroine interference.
  • The character building is exceptional. From the MC, the supporting character to even the normal civilian and the politician has their own motive, emotion and actual reason for any action they do.
  • The world building is, in my view much weaker than the other aspect, yet still incrediblely detail.
  • And the cream of the crop, the most amazing part of the story is of course, the MC. Cute, cool, almost perfect exterior combine with the cringy interior monologue. Than the other character in the story itself point out the flaw of the MC and help 'her' change herself. The MC alone deserve giving a 4 star for the story, everything else just enhance it a bit to nearly perfect level.

I've read this story multiple times and I can safely say it's a favorite of mine.

The story follows the typical isekai set up of a random nerd being sent to another world. The reason I like this story however is because of the upbeat way the Main Character describes his (her?) thoughts. The MC is a really interesting character, talking about his life and rhe events around him in an Obsessively self centered way but still making is quite funny to read.

All this comes to a climax when ... more>>
Spoiler

we find out the MC in his original world was terminally ill and was very self aware of his own morality. As well as being emotionally stunted his whole life to the point he was shunned for the most part.

[collapse]
Because of that the MC had a hard time accepting the people in his new world.

Highlights of this story include:

  • Multiple character POV's that show dirastically different interpretations of events
  • Very few loose ends by the end of the story
  • An actual ending that doesn't take 300 chapters.
  • Explanations for basically all events that happen
  • Comedy thats above average
  • Translation that is top notch
  • An upbeat story that has no shoe-horned romance.
Marks agains the story include:

  • Really weird explanations for the MC being isekai'd
  • The story also repeated some points quite a bit
    Spoiler

Like explinations for the Witch and why the MC does certain thinge, also the way he introduces himself every few chapters.

    [collapse]
  • Genderbender is a niche tag and can be a dealbreaker.
Overall, I would recommend this story if you like Genderbender, isekai, Galge/villainess story's. It does have some flaws but the MC is just a really fun character that I can enjoy the story for the most part. TL;DR 9/10 story I like the MC <<less

My review below when I was still at c35 still holds 100% IMO. The author is a great writer, and many individual chapters have great flow, emotional expression, and dialogue. However, IMO they need more practice in storytelling - many chapters don't connect to the previous chapters, many plot elements are introduced so late they don't add anything to the plot, and overall the story feels forced until the very end. Be it the reason why the real world is getting affected by Elrise's actions or why the Saint and... more>> Witch are actually unkillable by normal people, everything feels like it was come up with in a few minutes as a hacky way to piece the story together, even if it sounds nice looking only at how the author wrote the chapter's dialogue. I would rate the first thirty chapters 5 stars, but the last fifty chapters 3 stars (closer to 2 for actual skill, but I did enjoy anticipating how the story would end even if it was deux ex machina'd to death).

______________

Original review (c35) :

I love the initial concept and the early implementation of the novel, it's a perfect combination of an interesting personality using their prior knowledge to gain strength and power despite hardship after reincarnation. However, the later developments feel absolutely forced, and although the plot could be resolved by c15, random delays get choked down the reader's throat. I'll probably continue reading, but it feels like the author started with a clear idea of how to begin the novel, but changed the plot's direction after reading user feedback and rushed the implementation. It was still charming because of the MC's personality, but then in c33 the author randomly threw in "the MC is losing intelligence as time progresses" as an actual system in the story in order to justify why the MC couldn't resolve everything in five chapters.

Spoiler
    • Half the side characters treat the MC as a status symbol or a princess waiting to be saved. They charge in despite knowing the MC can handle the situation, and the MC has to hurriedly move to save the annoying side characters moving on their own and making assumptions even if the MC says otherwise. And guess what, this is an absolute inconvenience to every plot the MC has to kill the witch, delaying the novel another 5 chapters until the author can throw in another screwball.
    • The author's introduces actual retcon chapters every 5-8 chapters. Officially, they're chapters to view the situation from another person's perspective, but they always shift away from that character to third person in order to start hurriedly adding details on why the MC couldn't actually move in the previous scenario or to try adding logic on why the side characters are acting out of line.
    • The author keeps changing why the MC can't just go and kill the witch. First, it was because the MC wanted to see Eterna's ending. Then, they wanted to prevent the hero from becoming a muscleman (and why? No idea, but the author decides it'll become the MC's mission for several chapters). Then, the MC wanted to ogle girls so they didn't do anything for a couple more chapters (yes, that was the reason stated). The author found a good option at "the witch will teleport away once the MC tries to fight her, " but all of the MC's good solutions get thrown out without much reason other than "they wouldn't let the game characters participate." Then the MC gets locked in a castle to prevent her from fighting the witch, because she took seemingly several months to wait until Christmas to fight the witch. The MC could easily escape, but now her knight is acting on her own to screw the MC (of course, trying to "protect" her despite knowing the full plan).
    • Again the author keeps trying to add drama to prolong the story/add emotion. The MC's new body supposedly has a short life normally, and taking in the hero's darkness supposedly shortens it to a year. No explanation is given for why this is the case (is she sickly? Clearly not, based on all the other stuff she does and how the world establishes that high magic increases lifespan. Is taking in darkness dangerous? Clearly not, since several other much weaker characters do it throughout the novel with seemingly no adverse side effects.). Then the author decided that the MC was actually dying in the real world when they reincarnated - there was no foreshadowing for this, but suddenly the MC is confronting existential dread for a chapter or two and the readers are supposed to care? The MC quickly moves on with their life afterwards, without much mention of the dying real world MC again.
[collapse]

Again, I love the concept and the initial implementation, but the later screwiness of the plot is making me drop the rating from 5 to 3 stars. <<less

Well, well what a journey it has been.

Originally I really wanted to drop this as it felt like my school summaries of some book I had to write when I was younger. That and that happened and then that but no real tension at the start.

Though after some time - after chapter 20 as other comments have already pointed out - it got better and the style of telling the story changed and there was more substance to the story.

Although I liked it at the end and spent a lot... more>> of continuous time reading this and getting to the end - I felt quite unsatisfied. Why? Sorry that's a spoiler, not able to go around this one but let's also include what I liked.

Spoiler

Pro:

  • OP MC
  • Fantasy
  • Magic
  • Reincarnation - not even bland, a partial one at first progressing in it's "percentage" and then even a second one at the end. NICE, really innovative - at least this is a first for me, dunno if this is copied. I would not know the source - if there is, let me know; I wanna read this then too.
  • Catching story and element of surprise

Contra:

  • Long fuze to get to the point where chapter 3-5 should have been
  • No notable romance with the other MC - they kinda live together but as far as I read (skipped the side and some after stories) none. Why though? Male reincarnating as a female but is disgusted of men? Then go for female then Prime Knight-san is there you know? But I kinda don't get it - "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" you know? It definately influenced her already... Well alright...
  • Ahem... did I skip this part but what even is the Propheter even? Isn't it just someone very old that is able to make predictions? The turtle managed to predict the next saints for 1000 years almost correctly so it might seem as this job has more to it... But when MC gets it it is just "oh you can hear something really far away (and maybe even watch it - not sure about that, I forgot) "... Uhm, what does the world even need that for? I feel it is just makeshift of the world to make someone more intelligent for... what exactly? Predicting the saint? Heyho dear Kings just go through all Villages periodically and take a knife and slightly cut kids. I mean you could incorporate that into some mandatory baptism or population counting and stuff to literally find your Jesus.
  • The character kinda lacks depth. I mean yes mentally strange male reincarnated into female... But most of her thoughts are more akin to a program:
    • Fake the saint
    • I am tr*sh inside
    • Gonna get killed? Ah finally the garbage disposal is there
    • Lazy
[collapse]

I mean overall its fine and an excellent read but I feel like the author progressed significantly from the beginning to chapter 20 and beyond that more slowly - and it still had more potential with more character development. You literally took the bodybuilder route. Only that the FL only boosted her magic and appearance/conduct. <<less

a pretty fun story for people who are good at skipping text.

Approximately 20% of the text is necessary. Most of the rest is repetitive annoying filler that you'll find on many other jap novels.
Approximately 5% (only 5%!!!) is 'umai delicious delicious cooking rice rice japanese curry delicious amazing sama' filler.

But if you have the patience of a real saint or the intelligence of the original fake saint, then you won't need to skip any of the text and you can just enjoy the story.

I'm surprised with this story, while the author tent to over explain and repeat things, the story was good even though our MC is annoying!

In fact I almost stopped reading it because of how annoying she/he is, but I love stories of people misunderstanding an makin a character a saint when this person is the opposite (well she also did everything for people believe she is a saint) !

And I admit that I loved that the author explained that having a black heart and being that annoying was that made our MC so powerful and in fact saved the world!

TL;DR: Good translation, just not funny. Skip.

I don’t know what to say, I just didn’t think this was funny. The characters aren’t likable. Things just don’t gel.

The MC makes no sense, but it isn’t in a funny way. Nothing in the story is cute, warm, touching, moe or anything you might care about. Just a bunch cultural references and extremely boring characters.

The MC is originally sort of a NEET, but since presumably tentacle p*rn doesn’t exist the world is so so boring he trains hard everyday for 10 years becoming... more>> the strongest. I think I made it funnier than the novel did.

Anyway, so that happened. After becoming the strongest he does nothing but good heroic deeds yet he is still continuously surprised about the different reactions of people compared to the game. How dumb are you ? Maybe this is humor, but I don’t get it. You can’t make an extremely sarcastic character that is also so committed to the ship of MC and main heroine he is willing to sacrifice himself and everything else in the world for it. He doesn’t even like the MC. Maybe he is committed to the idea of a Gal game ? It doesn’t compute. Like I don’t know what his s*upid and supposedly funny world view is. At best it is “I must sacrifice my life for the sake of the ship” or “I must make amends for the actions of the original villainous character that didn’t actually happen ” but that is just sad to me.

There is a famous novel where the villainess is a dumb but lovable transmigrator and so insists on remaining the villainess because she loves all the characters and wants to keep the good ending of the game. However, since she loves the characters she can’t even be a little mean to them and actually helps them and encourages them in cute “villainous ways”. The characters aren’t blind and all like her. Very wholesome and amusing. This is the opposite.

Instead of doing the bad things the villainess did, he does ten times the good things, but sarcastically and only because it might help his ship or something. Other people get attached, but he is somehow an emotionless weirdo that doesn’t care. I don’t get it.

He also keeps mentioning multiple times per chapter how he will be discovered as a fake saint and be betrayed by everyone even though basically every single human has been personally saved by him at this point and is devoted to him above God and country. Stop repeating it. It is just tiring. <<less

This story was more enjoyable than I expected. I originally started reading this novel because I stumbled upon the manga. The manga made me interested in reading further ahead, so I came here searching for more.

The main character is a black hearted Saint that is known for being the greatest Saint of all time. Her reputation stems from the fact that she portrays herself as the ideal Saint in front of everyone, and she has the most magic in her arsenal.

The plot actually makes use of the initial premise where... more>> the main character is reincarnated as the fake Saint in a Galge, which is a visual novel where the player can romance possible heroines. The original fake Saint was a terrible person, and the main character is also terrible, but the main character is redeemed by the fact that they can hide their own terribleness with acting and magic. The main character's initial motivation for saving Fiore, which is the Galge's world, is accomplished at the end of the story.

Throughout the story, the readers know what the main character is thinking about while she maintains her Saint act, and the humor comes from the dichotomy between the mask she uses and the thoughts she shows.

The author failed at making me laugh at the homos*xual jokes, though the story does lightly touch upon the idea about how an established personality and s*xual preference does not suddenly change when one's mind is moved into a different gendered body. Liking men as a man does not suddenly turn into liking women as a woman. Therefore, the main character does not seem to be into men when they became the fake Saint.

The most egregious part of this novel is the repeat of story points. There are many, many chapters where the author repeats the previous chapter from a different character's point of view. The information in these chapters is also redundant and seem likely to be padding to increase word count. I pushed through and read these chapters because I did not want to miss any important details. Now that I've read every needless, unnecessary, superfluous, inessential chapter, I can recommend future readers to skip them because they barely do anything for the story. Please read these filler chapters only if there is a desire for more useless information.

If future readers can overlook the fact that this story contains some uses of informal language and terms such as LOL, LMAO, memes, and referential humor, then future readers may enjoy this story.

I give this story a 3.5/5, which I rounded up to 4/5. <<less

This novel was very good. It had a solid plot, everything has a reason on why any actions happens, a very good translation, and lastly a conclusion that tied everything spectacularly (seriously this is the first time I saw a novel that didn't let any stone unturned). I just have to say... From the start this feels that the author doesn't have the courage to say she/he wants vermin-kun as the love interest.

Seriously. I didn't care. But if u supposedly start to have a care in the world for eterna because of her 0 happy endings... A lot of stuff wouldn't have happened (like forgetting thinking about eterna for the first 40-smth chapters, or leaving her like a dunce in the memory corner).

Elrise only thinks about vernell (a non exemplary protagonist tbh... Nothing special for a... more>> male-interest, its the typical blank MC for otome...)

Instead the heroine (eterna), was supposed to be the target. But there is no 'love' towards her... She is forgotten for the most of the run. I get Elrise/Fudou left her to vermin, but really, always checking/reading on/about vermin instead of pitiful heroine was outside of my expectations. All the actions, most of the thoughts were towards the blank protagonist... Instead of the supposed love interest that was given a complete story and reason to protect. Just swap the genders if so, but u should have cared more for eterna if u gave me that long backstory. Now it sucks. Cus its always vermin this, vermin that. At least fudou/elrise could try to befriend the target and support... But the only support was a staff....

From start u can even count this.... Elrise talks about vernell. I had the expectation it wasn't going that way (the 'im changing cus Im inside a womans body).... There was no change honestly. From the word count vernell is everywhere... Its just f*cking everywhere. Even for a male or female bame or whatever I hate vermins name.

There is no change building here. I can lnly think that elrise will become good after being saint (being tainted white/opposite of the witches). But someone that left inheritance to sister and family can't be a black hearted person. Honestly a lot of the build up just s**ked for me. The most is the authour talking so much about gay-ending-vomit, muscle-vomit, cross-vomit, rcp-kiss-vomit, whatever-vomit... Just write without doing this.

I can't take it. I feel they should have just gone with vernell if it was what the author wanted. But it seems they don't have the balls for this cus of pressure or wanting this to be popular or whatever. It will not end in yuri of that I am sure. I entered thinking of BL, then I went to yuri side, but then u want me to switch to BL cassete when u told me that side story. I just wanna say this is foul play. I couldn't finish the story, I am aware its gonna end somewhere near that or the I don't have the courage to write it.... Lets be a neutron. <<less

The writer just had to ruin the story that he had built. Sigh. The story and the plot was decent until chapter 35.

Spoiler

you got a very OP and somewhat smart character, that's fine with me.. Just treat her like.. Smart and strong?

out of nowhere she suddenly dumb girl who can't just

  1. reveal her soon death
  2. reveal her true identity (fake)
  3. explain that she knows the truth about witches
  4. defeat the kings
  5. force her way out

it was very clear to me where the writer want the plot - hero and his party come and save the day - and I wouldn't mind that. IF she was somewhat weaker or dumber before, or under different circumstances where she really had to be saved. Tho it's hard to imagine how will that happen.

I read it through the ending, epilogue, and one side story at Kakuyomu. Whew, that was an emotional rollercoaster.

It's mainly about misunderstanding (s) and the comedy that stems from them. MC is a proper human being, surprisingly humane despite his claim as a 'filthy existence' (based on his personality).

Author did a good job with keeping the MC's character, while the majority of expressions that affect the reader usually came from his entourages and their (misdirected) preconceptions.
