Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”.

However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of catacombs, the “World’s Weakest”.

Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled catacombs… at least until I found a hidden catacomb with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank catacombs!

In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

In overall the story is dull. When you read the manhwa you can get excited when there are actions but reading the novel doesn't give me excitement.

No character development for MC or side characters.

The world building is just not good enough, too generic and many forced setting for plot.

Reading it quickly and for fun if you have nothing to do is okay, but not if you to find a good story with good character development and other point.

Spoiler

I did not recommend reading it though, all your effort to read will be useless for a story that end with time travel erasing what you all read, but did not tell the story after time travel itself, just a some explanation without the story itself

as I always do, I went into it with low expectations and I can say it has surpassed most of them. though definitely not all

dont mistake me, the novel had immense potential, which it ultimately failed to meet.

... more>> however, as dull as it may be to some, its a simple week-to-strong trope that makes you feel good.

if you are looking for a novel whose author in really skilled and intelligent..... this isnt it.

the author thought of a great story and he ventured into the abyss but I cant help but think of what the novel would have been if a more competent, lets say, author had a hand on it.

the game elements sadly kill some aspects of the story, something you should look out for.

the MC ability kinda defeats the purpose of having allies so character development is rarely seen.

there a large amount of satisfaction that accompanies reading this novel which is why ive been coming back to it every now and then.

defiantly not the best but at least good.

3/5 close your mind before reading and I assure you you will enjoy it. dont over analyze. (only a little bit should be fine) <<less

Read this after binge-reading the ongoing manhwa which is very popular and I am disappointed. All I can say is that this is just one of those generic anime/manga/novel with an OP protagonist who only have useless, flat side characters as a stepping stone and to distinguish how OP he is.

It was a good read, the best I have had in a while, still have some complain as why no to give perfect score.

Spoiler

Author use females a fan service, still keeping the novel in a shounen genre where the MC is s*upidly dense, that trope has to disappear FOR GOOD! dense people is not something of recent years, where every teenager has access to communication and social media. Is a bad practice adopted from Japan, which could be logical for people living in the 80s to early 2000s.

Author gives us a glimpse of another world, still keep the novel tied to earth, where it could have expanded to another world, the Demon's Castle Instant Dungeon could have been the MC visiting many worlds to gather allies, instead of a dungeon to grind exp. Also Esil Radiru best Waifu (Fite me Author!).

The whole history revolves around glorifying the MC OPness, I don't complain being this at the last part of the novel, but pretty early MC left behind all other Hunters on the planet, even so more reason to take the plot away from Earth, still, Author Keeps using MC to babysitting the whole planet.

Too many Plots, too many enemies, too many enemy armies, still all counted for nothing, battles were rushed and no one besides MC could do anything, so rallying the world to fight was just waste of words.

There was supposed to be a fight about Rulers VS Sovereigns in the end the one who fights all the Sovereigns is the MC, the Rulers appears at the end to launch last blow WTF... Author waste a lot of chapters with nonsensical filler bantering text, but couldn't waste 10 chapters to do a better climatic fight.

MC's Father who was supposed to be lost, resulted to have Ruler powers, he appears to defeat a treat to MC early novel, but then disappears until last arc to sacrifice his life to protect MC, WTF Author! Why hide, if he contacted MC both of them would have solve thing easier.

MC don't say or try to explain anything to anybody, keeping everything secret, then just before final fight he decides to talk but nobody believes it, who the f*ck will believe it right away? During all the novel I thought on my own head the way MC could tell everyone "PPL I level Up! Look I have an inventory and can appears things" whatever Author... whatever...

In the end after MC wins, the Rulers appears congratulating MC and giving him a final wish, he asks to go back to the past to fight everything by himself. What The Actual f*ck? Happy Ending? Now we got Magical Happy Ending? Author.... -_-

[collapse]

I will stop here. I will regret giving this thing a 4* still I recommend this read.

Edit: After some coffee and mayor considerations, I lowered the Score to 3* inclining to 3.5 <<less

The novel is a nice read, not really funny and relationships between characters seems a little forced.

I can't rate this novel more that 4 stars and the fourth star is only because I completed the novel. The novel was good when it started for me even with some noticeable issues and some rushed development, I was still fine with it but the ending was what deducted stars from my book.

a lot of life's were lost and a lot of citys destroyed but they human won only because of our MC.

MC isn't happy with the ending that to many lifes were lost and choose to reverse time and go and fight with the other Monarchs alone, with no ideal if he would win or not.

We know that the longer the battle drags on the stronger he becomes, it still takes him 27 years to finish the war and return to earth.

Now my problem with the end is that it made every body fight loss meaning. Our MC can only handle the shadow Monarch powers because of the training he put himself through, meaning that the others with the rulers power in them could get almost as strong as our MC before he completely became a Monarch since he too will be able to handle the rulers power and this in turn could mean that others with powers can get stronger too, even after reversing time other creatures are still coming to earth (author explained that it's because of our MC powers) remember Monarchs still came to earth even without having any magic on earth.

Our MC going back in time throws away everything humans have work. If I may remind humans grow stronger by our experienced, humans would have mourned, grown, rebuilt. Humans would have training to make sure this doesn't happen again no matter how weak we are, one of humans strongest Instinct is to survive.

The author disregarded a lot of things but what I hated the most was that the author disregarded humans and the little power they fought to get just because they didn't get cheats like MC who is petty much no longer human.

The world revolved around MC and because of that, it never showed how amazing humans can be especially when cornered

I ranted a bit but this is my honest view and after saying everything I feel like this novel deserves 3/5 stars <<less

Don't be surprised, I came here from the manwha since I couldn't wait for weekly chapters when the novel was already completed. But I NEEDED the spoilers. I had high expectations since the manwha was EPICC and the LN was somewhat bland and less, ahem, epic but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I particularly like OP cold blooded mu*derers so maybe that was one of the reasons why I had fallen in love at first sight. (Throwbacks to when Sung Jin-Woo was like "Another of my emotions just died." LMAO. Talk about... more>> moody and dramatic.) I have to say that the story line of Solo Leveling is not that unique (emphasize on not that unique) and I can see some other animes and mangas that they got ideas from, but the small details and the world building that they develop really makes this an original. I also liked how there weren't any unnecessary arcs: you could see that everything he did was to build him up for that final moment.

One thing that stood out to me the most was that Sung Jin-Woo seemed like he actually had real feelings in the light novel. I was so used to seeing his poker face in the manwha, like 'I'm too good for this', 'I'm attractive as hell', 'I'm the shadow lord', ect. But in the light novel he seems more human and down to earth, not like some immortal being (OK I'm saying he's weak).

I really like the light novel, but to all the people who tr*shed it saying its disappointing and dull, just stick to the manwha since it's just so much better. I'm mostly basing my opinions on the manwha since I read that first and I kind of built the light novel off of it, so I'm kind of biased.

And that's on me ranting about how Solo Leveling (well the manwha) is the best thing that ever came into existence. <<less

The premise of the story is simple: You are given the opportunity to level up in a world where everything is based on sheer luck and no one can improve their strength by cultivating themselve no matter how smart or courageous they are (suck it losers I guess)

but everytime you become a little stronger, you also become a little edgier. Will you do it? The MC said yes so he quicly became very powerful and edgy.

P.S. Only read the manhwa because it's really nicely drawn. That I can... more>> recommend. <<less

( ((WARNING: There's a LITTLE swearing and spoilers.)))

I got tricked by three things into reading this.

1.) I've seen a recommend somewhere that said this novel had a smart MC. Awesome!

... more>> 2.) The ratings. So much 5 stars? Must be good, or passable at least, right?

3.) KR novel. ALL, and I meant ALL, KR rpg novel I've read so far had been right at been my alley of novels. This must be as well, right?!

Holy hell.

The first few chapters had been fine, the one that leads up to him getting the system. It protrayed him as smart, caring, weak ass but filial man. A reader can actually sympathize to him. Especially when he chose to sacrifice himself, not for drama, but for cold-but-real-cash from insurance for his family. Seems pretty great!

Then the system came. Since then, I think author's IQ dropped to grade school.

When you are dying, a voice that seemingly comes to prevent that death, what do you do? Doubt it, he did. Fair enough for me. But not grab it? Especially when you are oh so filial and so much regrets? Suddenly, I remember how he had so much brushes with death so far and how casual had been towards it. This made me realize, why? Especially for someone who had so much responsibilities, accdg to him? This is the first inconsistency.

Second is when he woke up. The way he handled the system was very frustrating even for a normal person like me, who is pretty normal. What happened to his IQ in surviving the earlier dungeon? Hallucination? Who are you kidding? He knows FULL he should've died. Last thing he remembers is the 'hallucination'. It dont take much IQ to add two and two together. Yet he couldnt!

He gets a quest, see multiple times about penalty for failing, ignored it. Call it hallucination. Never even thinking how that same hallucination saved his ass, so how could a punishment be anything but real. So went and nearly died, how he even survived penalty is f*ckING PURE plot armor.

He finished penalty. Came out full of sand. Doctor went meeeh, Nurse went, 'oh blood, no wound tho, must be regeneration!' The sand? It was everywhere. Where it come from? Who cares! And this is when he is in a hospital, under speculation of being a high ranker, and might even landscape of power struggle. But this roomful of sand? Possible monstrous-level healing was known by a nurse UNAFFILIATED by whoever is monitoring him so they completely missed it. This made me go, WTF. This definitely not on MC anymore. Its on the author!

Still, I trudged on. Maybe, author just had to cover holes with plot armors for now. But it gets better. I hoped.

I was waiting for him to contact his former teammates. He did saved their lives. Especially last two. But they were gone, they couldnt bother with their saviour who had been hospitalized for WEEKS for saving their asses. No contact, no nada. MC couldnt be bothered either. Like, ohhh its just another day. Sure he couldve been distracted by his new found powers. FINE. I'll stop there.

I read on. (I'd skip some bit cuz there's gunna bd too much rant) Then comes his next dungeon assault with a team. (His mom thats in the hospital? What about her? What is filial idk) He knew he was about to be betrayed. Somehow some smarts came up again, (maybe he's just a game wise idiot), he noticed signs from words and actions. It wasnt the best execution, but way better than before. They were betrayed, a snotty kid beside him reacting almost like reading a script (honestly, the lines felt like carbon copy of MANY generic novels from before) and the MC? He acts likes a bigshot. I f*cking dont know where he got the arrogance. His 'young master' attitude had been rubbing me off since he entered the dungeon. It really made me feel disconnected from the less-than-10-chapters-ago him. Like, who the fck is this? He is now so arrogant, so assured, so freaking FULL of himself when just less than month ago, he's a lowly rank E.

Death did not even cross his mind in here. Even with gigantic spider surrounded by corpses is onto him. How'd he fight it? With a teeny tiny dagger. He knows how to use a dagger? Who cares! Does he know anything about the boss? Who cares! Maybe he is just naturally good? Yes, his past years as hospital junkie is useless information!

The gap of attitude in it all made me think of antagonists trade marks, which is when they power up, everything is within their grasp. Hence they belittle everyone else. Even death. The thought of failure not even crossing their minds. Thinking others are just naive, etc etc. When they were exactly weakling like them just before. The hypocrisy!

The narcisism in it was so unnerving, I had to stop reading.

I had read tons of CN novels for narcisim feels. But this KR novel showed me a different kind that just made me drop it. And I rarely drop novels. So early into the novel, too. And a KR novel, too!!!

Maybe I had too high of an expectation from this.

Moral of this post, reading reviews helps. I just read them now, and holy crap I agree to most of the low stars. <<less

This really is a great novel. Lots of main character development and world building. Everything is very cohesive and there's plenty of twists and turns to throw off the reader from the usual predictable ending... Here comes the "but" though.

Like many, MANY novels of this type; the MC VERY quickly throws his contemporaries behind. The novel devolves into power-fantasy wank material faster than some poor blonde getting a 12-incher in her ass in a story-based p*rno.

"I Alone Level-Up" peaks in the mid 100ish chapters and plummets from there. There's hints... more>> of the m*sturbation fantasy prior to that but it's subdued enough to be easily ignored. By as early as chapter 90 even the named side characters are practically busting their nut at the slightest mention of the MC. The world-building keeps going but it's hard to ignore the only relevant character being the MC.

I really hate this trope in eastern writing: MC is god, MC is life, everything else is throw away garbage that fully deserve asterisks next to their names as they're introduced with a end-of-chapter note "Don't invest any time into this character".

I've read about a dozen novels now and all the love interests turn into helpless damsels in distress (regardless of how strong they're introduced as), all the "old masters" end up tonguing the air just to get the slightest sensation of the MC's robust phallis, and everyone else exists solely to die from orgasmic/fear implosion at just mentioning the name of the MC.

I invested a lot of time in this novel and while I genuinely enjoyed the majority of it and would even recommend it to folks, it doesn't do anything new and follows a very familiar formula.

Edit: and the patriotism present in this novel is almost vomit-worthy. I personally skim-read most of the international politics bits just because 1. They were cringey as holy hell - 2. obnoxiously unrealistic. - and
Spoiler

3. Who gives a flying ass about some dunce-cap war between nations when literal monsters are invading? Japan ain't your country's b*tch, author. I read nearly 2 and a half hours of plot of how horrible the Japanese were/how grateful they are to south korea. It is absurd how hard you as a writer push this crap just to make a fictional statement. There's a reason it's infinitely more expensive to live in Tokyo than it is in Seoul. f*ckin' hell. Is it too much to ask for a good story that isn't plagued with c*nty politics? Did story-telling die when people were still shitting in and then drinking from the same water source?

Edit Edit: 3 minutes after making this post North Korea contacted South Korea to mend bridges all because of the omnipotent MC.... I.... Words nor text can express what I haven't already elaborated on.

Perhaps the dullest level-up game system novel I have read out of dozens, there's absolutely nothing here you haven't read before if you've read half a dozen in the genre. The MC's personality is wildly inconsistent and he keeps doing dumb things that plot armor saves him from. For example, he gets a key to open up an S-rank dungeon, thinks to himself, "only a team of S-ranks can clear S-rank dungeons", then goes in and almost dies to the first monster and only doesn't by sheer and utter luck... more>> that it's in the only class of monster he gets a buff against.

His system has an automatic growth cheat, which is a big problem, because he gets stronger every day with minimal effort... but he still goes off an risks his life for no reason at all, because he has no unusual motivation to do anything. He's almost died half a dozen times in the first 30 chapters, and there's no reason for him to, because he literally gets stronger every single day, and again, he has zero motivation for risking his life.

Also, literally every other person he runs into is a villain out to kill people. This is absurd, because they essentially live in a near-future S. Korea and society and the superhumans are supposed to be well-regulated. He's spent his entire life being a bottom-rank loser and hasn't died, yet as soon as he gets super-powers all of a sudden everyone he runs into is trying to mu*der people.

It all feels like a barely coherent freshman author attempt in an over-saturated genre, and I just can't understand why this story is rated highly at all. <<less

No idea for the high ratings. It's just the MC killing monsters, gets praised. Levels Up. Kills more monsters. Seriously There's nothing more that. Interesting premise but bland MC.

This is clearly just a power-trip novel with little to no character development. Even villains are too bland to even remember their names and what more about side characters? They're just their to flower up the MC.

When I first read this I got hooked but as you go deep you'll be met with a ton of disappointments.

In conclusion, this is a stale novel that get hyped up because of that visually enchanting webtoon of it.

Decent novel, but nothing special. It has the same problem as most Korean novels, after the MC gets his cheat skill, he becomes OP way to fast and with barely any work. He steamrolls over everyone and everything which takes away any tension and excitement. Reminds me of Everyone Else is a Returnee and not in a good way. I had to quit it (EEiaR) halfway thru because I couldn't bare to continue reading. It's a decent read while waiting for other novels new releases but nothing more.

As the title/summary indicates, the MC has "gamer" powers while in a "Dungeon gates appear in the real world" setting. I binged through all the chapters released so far and it has been a fun read. At 270 chapters, it seems like a short novel so I will be happy if the TL can complete it. Overall 4/5, a nice fun read and good translations especially if you like the gamer+dungeon genre but nothing special/new to give it a 5.

I am surprised the novel is only on google docs because... more>> it deserves to be published in Wuxiaworld or Gravity-tales etc. &Amp; the TL could make some money. <<less

One of the worst novel I've ever read. The characters are annoying and the whole story is just predictable. The MC is boring and his whole personality is just 'getting stronger'. Also the Romance between the MC and FL is just random and doesn't make sense.

It's well written, but nothing overly orginal in my opinion. Gained a lot of hype, but it's not a 5/5 novel.

I'll get it out of the way to say what I think is good.

1. The novel is well written in a way I feel most web novels are not. By that I mean it feels that I'm reading a edited LN that had proofreading and an editor at times.

2. I also feel that the author can write good characters when he wants to put in the effort. Like with the... more>> chairman.

Now what I didn't like or was disappointed in.

1. MC is too overpowered from early in the story. He went from F to S rank within 50 chapters. There wasn't much tension till the end of the novel.

2. The system the MC has was under used. My biggest gripe was that the MC had the ability and cash to acquire numerous skills that would level up with his magic power, but never gets anything. Only two skills besides his necromancer power. One a drop from an assasin and another a gift.

3. I dislike necromancers. It's a crutch to one man army your novel.

4. Hate solo mc's. It's a crutch to not have to write a main cast who fights alongside the mc

5. Lastly, novel feels very basic and nothing super original.

I came here after reading the Manhwa and I wanted to know what happens next.

I have to say, the story was compelling and the MC was likable. But After some chapters, it became a power fantasy and the MC turned into an emotionless killing machine.

Spoiler

The only conflict he faced after he got the system was when he fought Igrit, the Sovereign of frost and beast, and the final fight with Sovereign of Destruction at the end. Just three fights in a 270 chapter novel.

All other fights is just him winning alone with little to no effort. The great S rank Hunters are sidelined and solely exist to comment on how AMAZING the MC is.

One thing I really liked about in the novel is his desire to protect his family. His mother waking up is one of the strongest scene in the whole novel.

I personally didn't like the ending though. Undoing all the suffering, the relationships, growth and the character's achievements that happened till that point just cheapened the experience for me.

Sure he wants to bring back the people who died. But the characters who are brought back are not the same people that readers know and love. No longer is Cha-Hae-In the character that fell in love with the MC through hard battles. It's the same for all other characters. It's just not the same.

It's just a world the MC shaped to his preferences since he knows everything that will happen.

My final thoughts. It had a great start, a shaky middle and an underwhelming end. <<less

this novel is fantastic, if you enjoy game system mechanics coupled with underlying mystery, you'll enjoy this novel. I originally came from the fantastic webcomic and when I peeked at the novel to see what would happen next, the next thing I knew I was on chapter 204 and had to stop myself from reading the rest. I enjoyed the characterization of MC, the tiny sparks of humor, even the side stories where we see MC gather back those important to him. The translations are also quite fantastic.

That... more>> said, while it's good it's also nothing new. MC is so OP he clears dungeons by himself, why bother even having any other S ranks when MC literally summons an army at will? He can and will essentially render all the other hunters moot, especially when stronger monsters pop up and not even other S ranks can dent them but MC sliced through like butter. The power disparity between MC and others is so laughably huge, quite literally everyone in the entire world is rendered useless after the jeju arc. Also I find the romance a little lacking and would have rather done without or had it fleshed out a bit more.

It might not be original, but you could definitely have a good time. The pacing helps keep it from dragging and there's small things that keep the story refreshing. <<less
