“You never loved me anyway, right?”

Astelle’s long-awaited marriage life ended in a day.

She worked hard to become Kaizen’s wife since she was ten, but the only thing that was left for her was the stigma of an empress.

She was abandoned by the royalty; the man she loved, Kaizen, wanted her to leave.

“Yes. You’re right. I didn’t love you.”

Astelle lied for the last time. The man was the reason for her life, but it was also for the sake of the man who was her husband for a day.

She thought there would be no contact with him again, but-

“I think… I might be pregnant?”

***

Six years later, Astelle, who reunited with Kaizen, lied again.

“You… who is that child?”

“He’s my nephew.”

To protect the child.

I just couldn't keep reading this. The ML is just so... bad. Truly unrecyclable tr*sh. He only cares about himself and doesn't ask or care about the FL's opinion.

Spoiler

This dude somehow thought it was a great idea to do a public proposal to his ex-wife, who he threw out right after their wedding night 6 years ago (and who told him before that she did not like him and wanted to be as far away from him as humanly possible). And when she turns him down, he locks her up.

So I finally feel like I have read enough of this novel to get to the heart of it. If you want a one sentence review here it is:

This is the kind of novel that someone would isekai into before the plot starts to change things.

If that wasn't enough info, mild spoilers to follow:

Spoiler

General background to understand:

Overall it is probably best to describe this novel as a tragedy, but not for mu*dery reasons. It is not a tearjerker, but it does pull at the heartstrings. The MC and the ML could've had a picturesque romance if her dad wasn't such a monster. Like the only reason that the ML rejects her so much is fear of her dad. That being said that there's an aspect of age playing a factor here. They get married when they are 20, she is a happy cheerful girl who finally sees the light at the end of the tunnel of her terrible childhood. But then her first love pulls the rug out from under her. And the ML, he's a young man who has to deal with the beasts that have been to take a bite out of him all his life. When his father dies he finally has the power to take back his own and his wife is just another person who might try to kill him. (Doesn't help he's got war on the brain and love is like his lowest priority) Technically speaking, neither of them did anything did anything wrong. They were forced into roles that put them at odds. However, the ML does do some bad things so I can't completely exonerate him, even if what he did was "technically" correct. When we meet these characters they are 6 years older and much more mature emotionally and both have grown as people based on their experiences.

The best thing about this novel is that the MC doesn't fall back in love easily. She had a hard life and is now a real adult with responsibilities and solely focused on getting out alive. Honestly I don't mind how they describe the ML falling in love either because he basically falls in love for the same reasons she did before, but he's too late. He often has flashbacks to their relationship before and actually processes how without the filters of war and enemies on his mind, she was also his first love. He is finally able to return her feelings but the tragedy is that he has no idea how much she has suffered. All of the sweet things he does to woo her are shown to us against the backdrop of her apathy and bitterness towards him. Especially because the kindness he showed towards her before that made her love him is microscopic in comparison and it shows he was only doing the minimum because he had to.

I hate novels where the female character falls for the guy no matter what kind of scum he is because she has too. That being said, I almost always prefer an ending that wraps tings up neatly in a happy little bow. But I think this is one that needs nuance. When reading this book it is incredibly important to ask yourself these questions:

Is it actually better for Theor for them to get together? Would any of the characters make different choices of they were given a second chance? And does doing nothing to protect someone when they need help make you a bad guy, even if you have little choice? (Many characters fall into this including her brother)

[collapse]

Bottom line: I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy the suspense of someone trying desperately to keep a secret, or anyone who like a slow burn romance that sizzles in an angsty way. <<less

Well this isn't absolute garbage like Abandoned empress but it's close. I don't excuse the ML at all. The ML is a scum. I only read cause of cute Theor. Anyways this relationship between FL and ML is toxic af and I'd rather FL be alone and happily raise her son.

Honestly this story doesn't have any plot or hookline to it so I am dropping it. Not worth the time.

At least the manhwa art is pretty

OK so the first thing I like about this novel is that the FL is really intelligent and independent. Whatever she do is really reasonable and smart, she is not like any other female leads I have read who still love and will forgive the scumbag ML easily even if he really does something unimaginable and cruel towards her.

I know the plot of this novel will eventually lead them to fall in love again and so on.... But I really wish this does not happen. And the ML would let... more>> her go... She will live her peaceful life with her son somehow and be happy. Happily ever after

Anyway I love this novel and I'm still waiting for new chapters. <<less

The king forces his former wife to accompany him against her will, but excuses & plot-twists repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly stop her from leaving. It didn't feel romantic at all, he was ab*sively possessive and barely understood her. Her child keeps ending up in danger, she hates it, all her feelings suggested she didn't want that kind of life, but she gets it, happily ever after, the end. Such a big disconnect from the author.

The story includes political intrigue and drama, unfortunately it didn't build to much, it was just an... more>> odd series of plot-points meant to further the drama of their relationship.

The writing/translation is solid. The plot was just disappointing. <<less

I love this story. I give it a 5/5. It is a slow burn. So, if you are looking for something fast-paced that tells you everything about the story upfront, then this is not the story for you.

I know that people complain about the ML, but he is one of the better developed characters that I have seen in stories like this. He doesn't realise many things about the FL due to her behavior towards him (hiding feelings behind etiquette of an empress and loving him enough to let him... more>> go). What makes him different is that he does not excuse his past behavior and is truly bothered by the consequences of his past actions and his own indifference to them. His goal was to be different than his predecessors and nobles, only to find through FL that he was no different. He changes in believable ways throughout the story.

It's hard for us readers because we see all the side actions that the characters themselves don't see and then become impatient because we want things resolved quickly to get to the good stuff. However, I love that this story is slow and get to see characters developed well. <<less

I like the story, I like how the author develops the characters and how the author plays with my emotions, well, stories that drain emotions are my type hehehe 😁

I don't think ML's character is that bad, I agree with the previous comment saying, ML's regrets and how he wants to be in charge of FL's life is worth considering. FL does not immediately open his heart again to ML, ML continues to struggle with guilt and tries to correct his mistakes. I think ML's bad behavior towards FL has... more>> an acceptable reason. I admit that ML is annoying because he seems to be forcing FL to come back but I think it's because he's desperate.
There are still a lot of chapters, so I think the story is still developing. And this is one of my favourites. 😍

This is the first time I'm writing my opinion here, to be honest it was triggered by me trying to review this story on a website because I really like this story.

(I want to talk about something, you can skip it if you don't want to read it 😁✌️)

maybe you guys already know that this story has been adapted into a manhwa and wow I got a lot of dislikes 😂, I know Everyone has their own POV when they read a story, so I can't force them to like my opinion. But I'm still wondering if my opinion is that bad hahaha 🤣, I just wrote what was on my mind about this story that I thought was good, and I liked it. So I decided to read all the reviews and almost 70% gave a very low rating, said the story was bad, cursed ML excessively and even criticized the author, almost all said "this is based on spoilers" and decided not to read this manhwa, because the ML character was unforgivable, Even one of the reviews like this gets 700+ likes. I don't like read spoilers so I don't know what kind of spoilers they read that makes them confident to judge a story only from spoilers, and when I read the "spoiler" they mean, almost everything written there is conveyed with exaggeration, everything is a point at the beginning of the story, and is a POV of FL. FL's fear of what might happen to her, they write as if that is what ML has and will definitely do to FL.

I want to convey, please read the story properly before you give a review. Once again I understand that everyone has a different point of view, but it's unfair to leave a review just because of a spoiler. The reviews and comments that we submit, greatly affect the interest of others in the story. It's kind of sad to see a story written by someone be "grossly inappropriate" just because of people like this. ☹️ Thank you for reading, and sorry for my bad english. Hope you happy and healthy ❤️ <<less

I'm a sucker for the hidden pregnancy trope. I also really liked how the male lead grew in the story.
Spoiler

He didn't realize how good the female lead was to him until after he pushed her away and had to work to convince her to give him a second chance (I love this trope too). But I really happy that they got back together in the end and even had another child together.

And their child was just adorable. I honestly have no complaints, this type of story is right up my alley.

The basic plot is as follows:
The duke's daughter (MC) is promised to marry the crown prince (ML). For years they were fiancees, with it starting when she was 10. The emperor says to rush the marriage when she turns 20. They marry, have a first night, and sleep together. But as soon as she opens her eyes the prince turns to her and says "Emperer is ded, it is over now. Let us divorce, you never loved me anyway, yoh". She is devastated, after all, she loved the prince so much that she did her best to be the perfect princess and future empress for him, and tried to do anything to get his attention and help him. But it was all for nothing, and now this. So she says "All right" and goes away without even getting a single penny (or what else she could get), or even fighting legally to maintain the wedding. Her father is pissed off at this and disowned her. So she tries to live her life alone in the boonies. But she is pregnant. Even after the prince uses some kind of contraceptive, she ended up with a child. So she escapes to her grandfather's state to conceive hidden from everyone. After 5 or 6 years she gets wind of the emperor searching for her for some reason. She knows that leaving the emperor's son with his father alone would only end up bad (for her son) so she tries to escape. When she is caught she tells the son to treat her as an aunt and puts some droppings that hide her red eyes, the mark of the imperial family. So we follow the tale of her trying her best to protect his son's identity while dealing with her ex-husband, the emperor.

There you have it. Be ready to be pissed off, happy, feel vindicated, and more along this novel. Go along.

But wait. I would like to detail some points. After all, this novel has some passionate readers that are roughly separated into 2 camps: "The emperor is crap and should get facked", and "he is crap, but there is some justifications there". And so some flames end up happening sometimes. But let me go to the spoilers to talk about it more:

Spoiler

So, the thing is: the duke, MC's father, is the scummiest of scums. This is no exaggeration, and you end up learning near the end. Anyway. The ML's father was a shitty emperor, he was useless and was totally in the hands of the MC's father and the other high nobles. So after the duke told some sweet nothings to the emperor, the marriage was arranged. This ends up with the crow prince being forced to marry some random girl he barely knows because his shitty father is being used to the duke finally achieving his dream of being the true power behind the emperor. So here is where all begins to go to shit. The ML does not like the MC. This makes sense, he was forced and all, and knew that the duke was dangerous. So he treats his fiancee nicely, but only in public. He never sees her for real. So he did not notice how much she adores him. This culminates in the one-day empress saga that I talked about before. He have the first night, got up, and was notified of his father's death and the first thing he does when sees she woke up is get rid of the torn in his side, MC. Oh boy. MC is devastated. All her dedication and love were met with this after the happiest day of her life. But she knows that there is nothing to do. She sees that ML never gave a single sh*t about her and her dedication. So she resigns to her fate and accepts what he proposes and gets the f*ck away from all this crap.

Now, I got very, very, really, pissed off. After all, he did not even try to contemplate her side in this all. More so he never even considered her as a person for real. He knew in some way she was there but did not give a single f*ck. And if you did not get pissed about it you have no soul.

Having put that out. He is justified in part. Yes. He thinks of and sees her as a puppet doll of her father. So he knew that if he gave her an inch to her, he would be trapped by the duke. So he always treated her almost like air. Does this justify it? 100% not. But there is some reason for his take. At this point is important to talk about how she treated it as a fantasy and whatnot. But I would say this is wrong. Considering that MC did not have a mother to guide her while growing up, and her father practically brainwashed her about being the perfect empress for the family. She put ML on a pedestal as the most important of her life. But never left it clear that she truly loved him. This is a shitty justification, but have a spec of sense in it. Not that I'm happy writing this, but I have to be (somewhat) fair here. This point is kind of talked about eventually, with her making a mea culpa. So it is nice that it was treated right.

But my problem with the ML is that he barely had an evolution. This novel has some of the common tropes of Josei novels. First is the ML that only notices what he lost after having lost. Hell, this is basically the whole theme here. This is not bad by itself, but have some problems in the novel. I say this because one would hope that the ML that sees his error would try his best to be better and right his wrongs. The problem is that the ML is unbearable, in the sense that he says and does what he think is right and f*ck you all what I tell is the law, deal with it. So, you start getting pissed off at his every word and attitude. And I would say it gets better, but barely. He forces MC to follow some of his whins thinking he is helping, but it ends up only f*cking up even more her plans. Add to that his whineness at times. That goes for another trope, the ML which is a big child and is possessive. This one got more pissed off. At one point MC tells him that he had already f*cked up her life, and he should at least have the decency to leave her alone. But he keeps trying to keep her close, because of his guilty after leaving her alone for years taking care of a child alone with not even a single f*cking penny (this when he did not know the child was his). Dude. For real. I would like it if someone just got real and said it would be best if he just respected her simple wishes of leaving her in peace at the bonnies to carry on with her peaceful and happy life. But then we would not have this almost 190 chapters long novel. He got (kind of) better. But is still possessive and solves everything at times with the worse possible solution. So I maintain my assessment that he is an ass and should not have a happy ending. His insufferable persona is tiresome.

The best we get in the novel, and what justifies my 5 stars, is when ML gets sh*t for his a**holesness. The nicest moment is when she compares him to her own shitty father. It is an overstatement, after all, you end up knowing that her father was planning to get rid even of his son and marry some barely adult girl. But anyway he did deserve to hear that and more. The sheer f*ckery of him not trying to look at her as a human attests to his brattiness and imbecility. So when he got some shit, I got happy. It is just a shame that most of the resolution is him overcompensating with mony every time he f*cks up. What overburdens MC and almost did not get better. And how the MC gets to like ML again was strange. It makes sense but seems rushed and forced. But this must be me pissed off or whatnot.

I have just some gripes. Some are useless. Others would break the novel. But I think it is valid to talk briefly about it. First is the fact that they could do a better job trying to protect the child's identity. I understand that they were poor and with almost no options. But she could just treat the child as a nephew from the start. It would add some nice drama. Or they could leave the child with someone along the way, like the apothecary, maybe. The sad part is that we did not get the tale about the prince finally knowing the dirt his father made on MC. This one would be interesting and is sad not to have. It would be a nice 5 chapter mini-saga. And sadly Naen did not get a happy ending. She deserved at least some nice closer.

There are other points about how bad ML gets, or how to better try to hide the prince. But those were the more important points of all. I would say that most characters are more incompetent than they should be, which is a kind of realism I was not happy to see here, lol.

[collapse]

After that long AF spoiler section, I would only say that this is nice. Not the perfect development and resolution IMO, but it is nice anyway. You will be most frustrated with ML null brain activity and personal/social aptitude, but it gets kind of better. I recommend it especially if you want to see some scenes of MC giving sh*t to some deserving bad apples (ML include). And for the badass grandpa that is the best character here, by far. Enjoy.

I'm going to be blunt here Female lead is an idiot. Everyone here acting like she's just so pitiful but as an actual abuse victim who also suffered from neglect I feel nothing from this. What she "goes through" is at most finding out someone didn't love her dispite tons of signs being there...

So in the end to someone like me she just looks dumb af. I've gotta say though the way she gives up just so easily on any and everyone doesn't exactly resonate. You could casually make one... more>> joke that doesn't quite catch about never seeing each other again in an over dramatic fashion and she would be like "ok" and disappear forever.

As for the prince he low key isn't even that bad just realized he did too little too late and now even if he likes her he is also responsible for ruining her life. He's a jerk if you didn't expect him to be slightly like a jerk stop reading this genre it's why your here. Most women like jerks it happens you move on or stay with either way most of these reviews are obnoxious.

During the sad flashbacks I just imagine two irresponsible kids being forced together and one of them is "in love" (apparently not because she leaves and disappears "forever" after a sentence) and the other doesn't even understand what that is yet. It's like the author knew this was s*upid because the prince even replies like that. (Prince) You don't love me so let's divorce. (her) yeah k bye... (Dad) you messed up I'm disowning you for quiting so easily (her) yeah k bye... (Brother) just go apologize to father I'm sure he will forgive if you just act like you cared even a lil bit (her) yeah k bye... It's obnoxious. <<less

So I'm going to skip past the entire ML situation since taking any side of that seems like a dumpster fire

So overall I'm giving this a 3 since it just doesn't have much subsidence to it, I don't feel attached to any character and its just written in a way that doesn't motivate me to read more. Its not bad, especially compared to some of the absolute garbage you can find on this site that somehow has an enormous number of 5 star reviews, but overall it just doesn't have... more>> enough of a hook to motivate me to continue reading.

Now for a rant that is unrelated to the story but really pisses me off... Why the hell does the author keep using maids as a plot device to give information, so there are multiple levels to this... First of all these maids wouldn't be this s*upid, lets use to start the example of the maid hearing the kid say "mom"... this maid is someone who was put in this position by the KING of the country and somehow manages to hear a kids whisper mom in his sleep and then somehow come to the conclusion that "mom" is referring to the women claiming she is an aunt rather than the kid wanting his mom who to this persons knowledge was exiled... Anyways, even ignoring the improbability of the maid hearing and coming to the conclusion that the kid is calling FL "mom" then you have the issue of them sending information to the nemesis character. This is a maid to the KING of the country, a person in this type of government can give the death penalty for basically no reason (which books seem to often ignore) and its already been established that maids can get the wrists cut off for messing with their masters belongings so its not like this is some happy everything is good world, and yet these maids would be willing to basically spy on their master, the KING, a person who controls their entire life, for a girl who has the potential to be the empress... You may be able to claim its because they are trying to gather favor but your forgetting, they are the kings maids... The incentive of gaining favor with a possible empress is too low to risk violating your masters orders. This is used countless times in this book so far... like another example is the maid who tried to hurt the kid, this maid even had a line where they knew that the kid was the KING's guest and messing with him is a bad idea yet somehow goes along with it, and I'm adding this as a side note if this is referencing our historical medieval times then the kings servants were nobility themselves normally so its not like there would be pressure from the count... While I know this is just something to move the plot along things like making side characters s*upid plot devices that move the story along are the reason why so many novels can't actually be good... Its fine when an author can bury it deep enough where you don't notice when reading but its hard to get immersed in a book when just reading along without paying close attention you find things like this which just feel like a cardboard cutout version of a character which is just superficial and unrealistic... At the very least add a line or two about blackmail or something so we get justification for their actions and on top of that make the nemesis character seem more evil... This wasn't honestly that important but still, ranting is fun, so I hope you enjoyed... <<less

I dont know why some people are saying that this was well translated. I can just tell (I'm at ch 28) that the group straight up passed this through google translate and called it a day. Im losing braincells reading this.

I'm sure its very well written in the original language but this is diffcult to read at times. And other times I just want to skip everything with how much repetition there is.

Anyways, moving onto characters: all the male characters, including ml, suck! (Aside from the cutie baby boy) Everyone... more>> else seems to have a warped perspective on the fl. ML thinks she was just a pawn for her dad. ML aide is suspicious of her every second hes around her and wont leave her alone. Everyones under orders of the emperor so no one bothers to ask her if shes fine with the treatment. Its like they expect her to suck it up go with the flow. Which ultimately leads to everyone being surprised when she goes "hell no".

Its an annoyong circumstance, so read with that in mind. <<less

This is a common trope novel that I feel most of you might have come across already. I love a good second chance especially those that promise a groveling ML but a lot of these either just make the second chance unjustifiable or the ML not apologetic enough. The pluses for this one is I can see why both acted the way they did and it is nice to see a ML who really ditched the FL without any underlying misunderstanding but given his situation and the person he was... more>> it wasn't exactly unreasonable for him to do so but does leave the FL understandably hurt.

But then comes my gripe, is that I felt the ML fell or the FL for no reason this time around like I wish we delved more into his psyche and understood why he came to love her now that he met her again. I liked how the FL actually maintained her stance and didn't crumble the very second he showed remorse but I feel like the novel didn't take advantage of the complexity of the feelings of its leads.

It is still much better than like most of the knovels of this trope. <<less

Theor is definitely adorable and I guess he's my fav here <3

It was a tragedy at the beginning of the story, I truly felt sorrowful reading how the life of the FL is unfolding and yeah at first I admit that I felt angry towards the ML but ... more>>

later.. I feel that what happened was all misunderstandings and they truly lack communications between the 2 (really it got me boiling inside sometimes lol). Oh and is it just me? But later, after unfolding the ML's perspectives I felt I understand why he did what he did, as later on I can see that he really repented and saw him being full of regrets, and after all those efforts he did, I forgive him after reading on early chapters, and it ached me every time the FL just deliberately neglecting the ML's efforts for a long time. My heart hurts : ( I guess im starting to cheer for the ML more than the FL now :") I like the FL, she's smart and diligent and all, but, really, in my opinion both of them need to communicate more and be more honest with each other especially the FL : (and this is why its so frustrating and it got me a love hate feeling while reading this.

the ex husband was annoying and now the FL is the one who annoys me but I understand where she is coming from because of the trauma and hardship she went through because of the divorce. Everything’s going well right now I hope the family continues to heal their hearts and mend their relationship. I cant wait for the updates and finish the story.

The ML is a pure douchebag. I was hoping that the FL would never end up with that pathetic excuse of a creature and instead live her life peacefully in a beautiful little village with her adorabe baby, dashing and caring grandpa and maybe a possible lover who is kind, gentle and respectful. The ML claims to have fallen in love with the FL but disregard her feelings, disrespects her wishes and imprisons her to forcefully marry her, fully knowing well that this will endanger her family. But he is... more>> selfish af. <<less
