“You, that’s His Majesty the Emperor, you know!?”

“Is that more important than a steamed bun?”

Yui Mei has two secrets.

First, she retained the memories of her past life. Second, it is highly probable that she is a daughter of the Sai Kingdom’s Emperor.

As a certified die-hard fan of Chinese dramas in her past life, she willingly participated in the court lady selection just for the sake of seeing the imperial harem in the flesh.

Well, an anime character in a Chinese costume drama.. MC said she remembered her past life and a fan of Chinese dramas but she definitely knew nothing of the culture - she cut off the crown prince's conversation with the physician, talked without proper decorum; she didn't even act like someone who lived in the era and accidentally remembered her past life, she was like a tourist who went to place she knew nothing about and didn't do a research. It was 'fresh' because she was supposedly smart (without the... more>> assassin trope) but all of her actions so far were kinda s*upid. This was like a bad ff of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto. Edit: Anyway, despite what I have written above, it is an okay-read to pass the time. Just forget everything you know from Chinese novels.

Edit: I'm going to reread this 'cause I can't remember a thing, I don't even remember leaving a review. Maybe I'll change my mind and rating later, who knows (it's been 3 yrs) <<less

100% agree with capeSpirit's review - this is like a bad fanfiction of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto.

I don't find the heroine particularly likeable because she doesn't feel like a part of that world, more like a "smarter than thou" tourist. Besides all the glaring plot holes (how could she survive alone in a poor border village as a 9 year old female child??? She'd be caught and sold to someone in no time.), her absolute lack of proper behavior that would've damned her to death (or at least flogging) in just... more>> the first chapters, even the narrative glosses over or blatantly ignores any hardships she would've realistically had making the story feel even more out of place.

I tried to like this story for 10 whole chapters but it seems it's not my cup of tea. <<less

An incredibly fluffy and warm story. The story itself is really slow paced, but it really gives attention to developing the relationships between Yui Mei and the other characters.

It is really difficult to find a protagonist that is a mob but is not idiotic, and that knows Medicine and is not an assassin.

The slow pace and the plot the flows behind the scene really heals my heart from carthatic scenes where the protagonist hangs from a cliffhanger every chapter.

The MC acts like a full blown modern Japanese as would be expected but the side characters (at least the villainous ones) are decently "Chinese enough" for an Imperial harem setting. Unfortunately, most of the 'good guys' are a little too easy going or perhaps 'logical' for a Chinese setting. (I've read too many stories where the characters are brain dead s*upid when they are focused on one thing)

This novel really shows the difference between a person who lived a bitter life before tramsmigrating and a happy life life like the MC of this novel. I really love this, the mc's obssession with food is I think very endearing as the reason for it is justified. Its just very refreshing.

I shaking with excitement

Maybe it's just me, but when it comes to novels I need it to have a perfect balance. For example, "Release the Witch" had too many unnecessary technical details that bored me to death. The novel version of "The King's Avatar" had too many chapters dedicated to the protagonist grinding to the point where I just skimmed those over. And my popular comparison novel, "Kumo Desu-ga", literally spent its first 100 chapters where the heroine was stuck in a dungeon all the time. No human interaction, a 100 chapters dedicated... more>> for heroine's evolution in absolute detail. It's like moments like these where bad writing made me almost want to smash my phone down to the ground. Where don't even get me started on too many tragic moments in romance. Nope~!

In any case, the type of characters and people I look up to in real life are those with a Heroic personality. Where during my short time on Earth so far, my personal motto regarding revenge is to "live the best and happiest life you can! You don't have to forgive those who tormented you in the past, but show to those who did that they will NEVER see you suffering ever again. Don't let them have that satisfaction anymore!". Someone who can be mentally strong despite carrying all the sh*t that they have gone through, and be able to influence others around them in a positive manner. So in my opinion, the heroine of this novel explempifies that model personality very well!

Granted, I do agree that the heroine's childhood life could've been explained a bit more in the beginning, where we could've gotten at least a small dedicated arc for it. But we have a decent explanation, and her past could be used for future flashbacks. Let's move on!

And yes, I do agree that it's a more relaxed version of "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto" so far. I'm not sure if the author has plans for the heroine to be involved in the Empire's politics deeply, which only leaves for more possible future changes to the story itself. But so far, coming from a person who found Kusuriya to be too heavy in terms of tone, this novel is a much better fit for me balance wise.

TL:DR? If you like a mentally strong and spunky heroine, then this novel is for you. Romance regarding the heroine so far is slow, but her interactions in the arcs so far is interesting enough for me to go through. <<less

Gives a fresh vibe to the whole court/imperial harem setting. Got quite bored with the usual protagonists having nothing but ridiculous revenge on their minds and how to get more power. This protagonist instead takes a different approach giving it more realism and at the same time makes her more likeable. Translation quality is good too, making it an overall very enjoyable read if you enjoy the setting, especially if you got bored by all the other typical eyerollable protagonist tropes and plots.

Aside from the cute chapters, this was also interesting because I learned things from it. That's why I can't wait to read the next chapter. Thank you for the translators for translating this novel!!

it’s a really good novel. It has a capable protagonist that wasn’t some assassin before, which is pretty common in most of the stories I've read.

Enjoyed the fluffy story, nice change of pace to the usual face slapping female leads. Still haven't reached any sort of romance but I don't feel that takes away from the story. I relate to the MCs love of food although as someone trained in nursing some of the nursing points made me cringe/laugh.

it's a great story and very different from kusuriya no hirogoto but it has its charms

and well if you ignore the beginning (which people criticize) the rest of the story is very good even more for having a reincarnated person who makes events develop in unexpected ways

Dropped this after 17 chapters. The other reviewers were right that this reads like an amateur fanfiction written by a teenager. I don't know if it's the translations or the actual author but sentences are short, abrupt, tenses were mixed up, and sometimes the wording and phrases reads like it's trying to sound sophisticated to the point where it felt like it was trying to be a Victorian novel era fanfiction. The translations were also peppered with semi colons for no good reason.

Examples of over use of semicolons from chapter... more>> 1 alone:

Spoiler

Yui Mei was raised in the nunnery until she turned seven; by then, she learned about her own story through the gossiping nuns.

...

Her black hair was tinged with a shade of midnight blue; it was a marvelous sight, indeed.

...

She even went to China with her friends to attend fan events; not just once but multiple times at that.

[collapse]

Terrible writing or translation? Examples of trying to sound sophisticated:

Spoiler

A beauty had the lowest status among the empress and the imperial wives. Moreover, she originally entered the palace as a court lady. She was only favored because of her hair, which caught the eye of the emperor despite her plainness. By the way, Yui Mei’s hair color was inherited from her mother.

Apparently, she was promoted since she gave birth to the emperor’s child. And it also became the reason why she, a person with no connections, drew the ire and envy of the consorts above her.

Indeed, the place called inner palace was hell swirling with the grudges and hatred of women.

Nevertheless, it was also a fact that Yui Mei was somewhat interested. The inner palace was a world that she obsessively stared at on the computer screen in her previous world, after all.

[collapse]

Moreover? By the way? Apparently? Indeed? Nevertheless? Same sentence structures over and over again.

I love commas, but boy are there a lot of commas. Though it seems like they don't likw the Oxford comma. This example shows that, in addition to amateur writing:

Spoiler

People clad in gorgeous clothes scrutinized Yui Mei’s group while pacing to and fro. It must have been quite a rare sight for them to see country bumpkin girls appearing in the capital.

However, Yui Mei and the girls paid them no heed, since they had already accepted the fact that they were country bumpkins, indeed. They just continued observing their surroundings.

They saw the disorderly pedestrian traffic, white earthen walls and the wooden buildings. Far off in the distance, an enormous vermilion building stood. It must be the home of the emperor.

[collapse]

Anyway, I dropped it due to terrible writing and grammar. It just made reading such a chore and bore. <<less
