I'm just here to write a review because I almost missed this gem due to its rating (back then 3.9).

I'm glad I didn't though and look forward to every update. So hoping to contribute with a 5* review.

This chinese novel takes place in european medieval times which in itself is refreshing even though the times and world depicted aren't refreshing or "fresh" at all yet it is awfully close to historical truth (regarding absence of medieval dixi toilets for example).

The ruthlessness and darkness that envelops the storyworld can sometimes be... more>> engulfing but MC and ML interactions with each other as well as how they handle ruthless side characters brought me to tears many times and brought light into the foggy storyworld.

The description text made the ML sound like a playful dandy IMO but he is more like a playful lion in regards to MC. Semi-tsundere ML meets awfully honey-laden MC (unbeknownst to MC).

Translation for me 5/5. Easy to emerse in the story. Wonderful wording almost poetic. It does the authors other publications justice.

Highly recommend. <<less

I hadn't read a Chinese novel with a medieval Europe setting til now so this is interesting! The MC's calm and collected attitude makes me feel just how mysterious he probably is to the other characters in the story. The ML doesn't strike me as a scum man?? The descriptions for the other noble characters make him sound like an angel lol

They've only just met twice so far but I'm already looking forward to their next interactions (◍•ᴗ•◍) ✧*。

The translation is also really good and super easy to read! Thanks... more>> to the translator (s) and editor (s) ! (╹▽╹) <<less

Read this about 3 or 4 times now and I still find myself randomly wanting to go back to it. Had to read it on f*cking Wattpad (ifykyk) so if that isn’t proof of how good it was then idk. 🤷‍♀️ I care more about the characters than the world setting so it didn’t matter that the background plots weren’t written in-depth.
Spoiler

ie. A lot of things were resolved ‘off screen’ - MC’s business, the war, the political situations

[collapse]
In saying that- I still think the book gave very vivid and thought-out descriptions of the time-period. Even thought it wasn’t the main focus, you could still clearly imagine the culture, politics and atmosphere the MC was surrounded by.

The main reason I rated this so highly is because of the relationship between the MC and the ML. They are both very drawn-out characters, with personalities you can’t help but root for. The writing can be quite poetic which usually isn’t my preference, but I didn’t mind it. Their interactions made me smile- you can just feel the way they cared about each other.
Spoiler

MC is in a new world where most people are pieces of sh*t and kindness is basically non-existent. He’s alone and weak, but he constantly fights against that hedonistic mindset. I can see how he fell in love with the ML, who literally grew up in that culture but still recognises it’s wrong.

[collapse]

Also- saw a review about MC being s*upid at times so he can be saved by the ML.
Spoiler

I think they’re referring to the scene where MC was almost ass*ulted by the prince. Off-topic: if an SA scene occurs and your first thought is ‘what an idiot MC’, please reevaluate yourself. In this case, MC was definitely not s*upid- he knew the risks of going but also knew his territory would be at risk if he refused.

[collapse]

Some said that the novel is too black and white, it doesn’t make sense for there to be no good people in this world.
Spoiler

The aristocrats in this world are pure evil. The things they do are horrendous. But, I don’t think it’s farfetched. In fact, a lot of what they do (dwarves as amus**ent, having s*aves, drug parties) weren’t uncommon in real life history. Yes, people are grey but people, especially nobles, have also committed atrocities without any guilt.

[collapse]
Characters like ML’s father did get some depth but admittedly a lot of them weren’t fully written out. You knew their basic plotlines and personalities but no other characters were given full focus aside from the main couple. I still enjoyed them nonetheless- none of them were boring.

Spoiler

People are also saying the MC became weak at the end, thought I thought he was strong when he walked to every church in the pouring rain and wore ML’s jacket despite the backlash. I do get why people don’t like how he basically gave up at end when ML was missing, despite his initial goal to improve his territory. The mentality of ‘I can’t live without them’ is never good. However in the MC’s position- someone who is only close to one person in the entire world and is dying anyway- it makes sense why he held ML of higher importance than his ‘people’.

[collapse]

It’s a relatively short story so don’t expect incredibly detailed plots; do expect a fictional relationship that will make an aromantic suddenly want love.

Binged read this and it was so good!! honestly if you’re reading the reviews, wondering if you should give it a go, just try it!! it’s only 42 chapters too.

The title and cover of this story is very misleading though. I was expecting the typical transmigration of MC into a scum-bag character or something but it’s not. The story is set in medieval times and is very interesting to see the differences with modern (like how bathing was seen as a disgusting act... The way these nobles must stink LOL)... more>>

Back to the story. This is fluff and cheesiness overload in the best way possible. MC and ML throwing dog food at everyone’s faces in public.. I love it. It’s the kind of romantic lines that make you wanna scream into your pillow. (Though MC is just being straightforward and this is understandable due to his past).

Both MC and ML have sad pasts, especially MC with his past traumas. And this is one of those stories where there might be some plot holes here and there but overall a really good short read. I cried at some moments :”) MC gives some really good lines of wisdom to side character too.

bu*t I just wish there were more chapters after they actually are together... 😭 I need more lovely dovey moments.

translation is honestly amazing too.

in summary, just read this! <<less

Actual rating- A solid 4.4

It was a really good story in terms of entertainment. I liked the characters- especially Rege. The plot was super interesting in the first half and assuming this is a character -driven story the character development arcs (though can be drastically unrealistic

) were beautifully delivered. The narrative was fast-paced and packed with immediate action and conflict - which makes for an interesting read without boring the reader.

Some potential cons:

    • The MC is mary sue- I mean he's literally a saint out there who believes and abides by moral righteousness to a point where it seems almost unbelievable and contrived. It feels like the author really wanted to whitewash him. Also he turned into a literal cardboard in the last few chapters- just as a plot device that serves no other purpose.
    • The plot grew angsty in the last few chapters for no particular reason-
      Spoiler

The fact a life sacrificial trope where "I'll replace your life with mine" and a near death sickness trope took up the last few chapters for the characters to come to terms woth their feelings irks me a bit. The final conflict could have been them awkwardly solving their emotions and it would have made for a better story than the angst-fest that slapped me across the face in the last chapters

      [collapse]
It's true that there isn't anything here that's not been done before or that the characters are ground breakingly original but given it's relatively short length it does brim with interesting philosophies and unique world building for something this short. I spent over 5+ hours on this and consider every minute worth.

Therefore highly recommend!

4.75/5* - Beautiful and unique setting! Recommend!

Title, book cover and summary are so unfitting and even misleading!!!

First, world setting is a Game of Thrones kind of universe in terms of cruelty, gore, gang r*pe and violence... but even worse!

MC is someone who had reincarnated before. Both his 2 previous lives were in a modern setting, but were very tragic. He was abandoned, drowned, killed and mu*dered, so he suffers from nightmares and is afraid of blood. Then after he was mu*dered in his 2nd reincarnation he transmigrated into this... more>> world.

ML is 2nd son of the richest Duke family in the empire. He is a playboy and had slept with countless women. He had fought many wars and is the strongest in the country both in power and riches. He seems equally cruel at the beginning, but you'll quickly learn he is not that bad. He could be considered an angel taking into account the sick environment he grew up in.

I thought MC would be the sickly, silent, aloof kind of beauty, but no. Unexpectedly, he is a person who tells everything what is in his heart. He is very transparent and showers the ML with praise and compliments. The ML slowly, but certainly falls in love with MC who is incredibly pure hearted. The world they live in is the worst you can imagine. The nobles are incredibly corrupted, r*pes and kills whenever they like. In this world, MC as a transmigrated modern person kept his modern ideas, , i.e. people are equal and life is precious.

The romance is incredibly beautiful! Since it is written by the author of QWFOD I expected the same kind of typical but satisfying face slapping that she is so good at writing and what characterizes most Chinese novels. This story is NOT like that. It's how a story should be, unique and new, and not a copy of many other BL stories, but with different names.

The world building have some inconsistencies though (-0.25*). This Western, medieval kind of world was incredibly filthy, also literally. People don't take baths because they think water is filthy (because of bacteria?). Also, they live in castles but there are no toilets, so people would poop everywhere...? But on the other hand they wear most beautiful dresses, perfumes and jewelry. It's so illogical. Very old castles in Europe all have toilets and development of personal hygiene goes hand in hand with other developmental milestones in society. So, this feels like a great miss from the author.

Also... MC was almost openly gang r*ped at a banquet by a Prince, although MC is an earl himself. These kind of cruelty apparently is very common and accepted. Bystanders would just act as spectators. Fine. However, later on the author writes how these terrible people would all try to pursue and court a renowned courtesan, almost as if the setting changed to a refined Regency novel. Uhh.. that is just so strange and doesn't align with the cruel, Game of Thrones kind of universe she set up. <<less

This was a short and interesting read.
first warning: the title and even synopsis to me have nothing to do with how the actual novel plays out.

Spoiler

I won't lie, I didn't really like the ending as first, but when I reread the last 3 chapters I fell in love with it.

[collapse]

I love how the ambiance, it was exactly what I was looking for and it didn't drag with was a plus for me. The MC and ML are both likable and I didn't hate any character fully

Spoiler

except from prince Andrew I wanted that man to die and burn.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I just wished they had told us who ended up ruling and probably given some extra, cause it felt like they whole story ended when the MC and ML fell in love and they was so much more story telling to be done.

4.4 stars. My review contains some spoilers and I'm just too lazy to separate the spoilers so everything is under the spoiler tag.

Spoiler

I'm confused about the title, which is quite misleading. It has nothing to do with the novel? This is a story by FOD author and it avoided successfully some of the flaws from FOD (e.g. Overpowered MC) while maintaining strong points from FOD (e.g. Strong/passionate love). The story is set in Medieval Europe where Jian Qiao (MC) transmigrated into an earldom and used his knowledge of jewelry and perfume to make a living. The ML, Rege, is the duke of a really strong region. The MC has a strong trauma due to his childhood and previous life death experience and ML is the antidote to that. The Medieval setting was quite interesting. The interaction between the MC and ML is quite hilarious in some parts, but the majority is really sweet. Haha, our MC has quite a silver tongue, where he just soaked our Rege in a jar of honey every time they met. The way Jian Qiao describes his feeling for Rege is just too sweet. They really are each other salvation. The ending is quite rushed, but I love Rege's unhesitant protection of JQ from pledging his allegiance in order to replace JQ in the war to challenging all the knights while he was still heavily wounded. What really made me go soft all over is how Rege, though can be overbearing sometimes, always respect our MC and his boundary like making sure to clean himself of blood before visiting the MC right after coming back from the war, or how he promised to never appear before the MC again if that is what JQ wishes for, as long as JQ is happy. Our MC's love for Rege is also strong, but he was clouded by his own trauma so he couldn't see it or was too afraid to believe in love. I'm glad that it works out, that love is not just destructive but it can also be very hopeful. It can be ugly but also pretty. Overall, I like the story and I would have loved it if there are more moments of our couple after they cemented their relationship.

Im not good at giving reviews but this novel gave me the feeling of being inlove. I enjoyed it. Being able to laugh or cry to a love story is a rare for me. I encountered many romance novels and mangas but even this is not too realistic, the emotions I felt is real. Im not that knowledgeable specially in love but can I called this a "true love" ?

The story is mainly focus in romance, how the main characters met, understand each other, develop, realize and overcome.

I recommend this... more>> novel. Well, I was fooled by the title but thanks to the certain person who I admire cuz of his "list", I found his review and tried this novel. Its worth it tho. I really like his taste. <<less

I love this so much. The world view of the MC is very realistic and he has a strong character. I'm rather fond of characters whom are able to develop like the MC. As for the ML he's typical rich, handsome and a playboy. But ML is not generic there's more to it in this story. As for the other characters they are like backgrounds in this whole picture. And the European nobles era is an interesting setting.

SO DAMN CUTE IM IN TEARS

I just want to start by saying the description does this novel no favours at allll. I'll post the one on wattpad here:

As a child, Jian Qiao was betrayed by his parents.
As an adult, he was stabbed through the heart by a
woman he barely knew but claimed to love him. If
there was one truth he'd learned, it was that love was
destruction.

Rege Grande was a formidable warrior and a
renowned playboy. The gallery in his family's castle
was filled with dozens of... more>> portraits of beautiful women,
all his former lovers. He had no intention of falling in
love with a man.

After Jian Qiao died, he transmigrated into a medieval
world of startling cruelty, but the nightmares from his
traumatic past shattered his health. His only goal was
to improve the lives of his city's people. Rege Grande
was just another obstacle to overcome.

And yet, somehow, this most improbable couple might
turn out to be perfect for each other...?

MC is adorable I can't help but want to protect him completely at all times. I just wanted to reach in and give him a long hard hugggg

ML is just as cutee, there was no need for excessively obsessive or possessive behaviour because his love was shown though his actions and emotions. Honestly he was the best point of the novel for me, I'm so sick and tired of cardboard MLs who only know how to spend money and superficially dote on the MC while being toxic and borderline emotionally abusive. Rege was just perfect for me I wouldn't have him any other way.

The relationship progression was PERFECT we knew they loved eachother and they were amazingly cute and loving and ahhh I was giggling like a 4 year old constantly. So cute so lovable argh my teeth were rotten from the sweetnessss

Side characters are well thought out, even though there were few.

Spoiler

I actually really loved Cassia despite her flaws, I think her character really reflected how women would have actually been and I absolutely loved when she was able to reach her own comfort instead of continuing to pretend so she could gain the favour of those sleazy nobles. She wasn't perfect but she was real.

[collapse]
.

The only teeeeny problem was the development of the last two-three chapters BUT I was so eager for them to meet again I barely read them anyways at it was virtually non existent for me

I also think the novel could've been longer just to flesh out the stuff about him regrouping his home country and things however I rate books purely on my emotional enjoyment to despite this it still remains really high in my heart.

Overall absolutely 5/5!!!!!!!!!!! <<less

This is a gem.

Most of the story is extremely fluffy. And cheesy. But damn, the angst in the last few chapters hits hard. I couldn't bear it so I directly skipped to the happy ending.

The ML is one hell of a dedicated person. I like him with all my heart. He is very sweet and very devoted to MC.

MC was okay. He is smart obviously. But he is also a frail Mary Sue. He is extremely afraid of love which is why he rejects ML when he confessed. His backstory... more>> is quite tragic. I felt pretty bad for him. He is cute and has a tendency to say extremely cheesy lines without considering how it might come across as a confession. I don't really care for him that much, but he is quite okay. He could have been much more irritating and s*upid.

This story is also really well written which is quite rare. The plot is good and it kept me hooked from start to end, except the angst part obviously. The pacing was just right, neither too slow, nor too fast.

The dialogues are rather extremely cheesy, which don't bother me whatsoever. I was just worried for MLs sanity cause how do you expect the MC to say such straightforward lines and him to be remain unaffected?

The MC needs some therapy ofc cause he is so gloomy and depressed always I feel pity for him. Hopefully after they got together they can work on it.

Basically, I absolutely recommended this novel. <<less

Love this novel. Translation is very well done.

I still don't understand the title though even after I finished the novel.

Also, I'd love more content about the life after they got together, and more of the period in the previous life between when little Jian Qiao was abandoned and when he became top jewelry designer.

All the content related to Jian Qiao's parents and relatives made my chest pained physically for real. I am a parent but will never ever understand how one can deliberately treat her (his) own child like that.

I really did not expect the setting!!!

For a long time I have seen that Eastern and Western novels writing style are completely different. And this was not too bad mix of both.

The story was short and beautiful 😊❤️ and the emotions it explores are quite deep and rich. I cried quite a bit in the last few Chapters and it was worth it.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read something short and sweet but it's still fulfilling~~~ (つ≧▽≦) つ

The progression of MC and ML's relationship was really great to read.

Just a couple of things to comment about:
- I wish the author could've made the ML's favourite painting into the MC, sadly it was just thrown/kept away
- their romantic relationship was full of fluff and sweet nothings but the conclusion seems so rushed to me

Awesome translation quality from foxaholic! Cheers~

Not really have any angst for the couple, my heart pains for MC’s backstory. ML is such a strong man, though some of his actions are contributed from the era he live in. The ending plot is a bit rash, but still acceptable. I like that MC finally found his peace, as in finally open his heart for ML. Also, I love Cassia, the supporting lady. Her dialogue are funny hahahaa 4.5/8 ⭐️
