Song Yu has three requirements for Yue Zhishi:

– You cannot call me gege in public.

– We won’t do anything together in public.

– You cannot let other people know you live with me.

Yue Zhishi has always been obediently following these rules. They were practically strangers at school. At the opening ceremony, he suddenly collapsed due to an allergy-related asthma attack, sending everything into chaos. At this moment, the student representative Song Yu suddenly stopped speaking…….

That night, a hot post appeared on the school forum.

【Shock!! Our junior high school department male idol and our senior high school department male idol are actually ‘brothers’!】

—————

Ever since his father brought back a mixed-race baby when he was six years old, Song Yu’s life has been completely entangled by this clingy little guy who couldn’t speak Chinese well.

Le Le who was in kindergarten: Xiao Yu gege, my classmate said today that he has a beautiful sister-in-law. What is a sister in law?
Song Yu: His older brother’s wife.
Le Le: No! I don’t want a sister-in-law!
Song Yu: ……
Le Le: I’ll be your sister-in-law! (Something isn’t quite right…….)
Song Yu: Please study up on Chinese familial relationships.
Le Le: Wait, wait. I’ll be my sister-in-law!
Song Yu: ……

Mouth says one thing but body does another, cat-like gong x mixed-race, obedient and straightforward puppy-like shou.

1. Childhood sweethearts with older gong. Slice of life (with some twists and turns), with a lot of scenes involving eating. Those who like fast-paced stories, be cautious.
2. Shou is in third year of junior high at the start of the story. There is no blood or legal relationship between the shou and the gong. Remember, they’re not under the same household registration book.
3. Gong spoils and dotes on shou. Very strong double sided arrow, essentially younger brother complex x older brother complex.
4. Cute shou, not strong shou.
5. There is a wlw side couple, not much scenes.
6. Please don’t read if you can’t take even a little bit of unexpected events. This is not solely a sweet fluffy novel.

CWs: light PTSD, talk of su*cide/self-harm, talk of death/dying, h*mophobia (from side characters). Please do not read if these make you uncomfortable.

One of the best slice of life bl novels out there. The way the author handles the lgbtq aspect is really warm, touching, & empathetic (i saw somewhere on twitter that the author is lgbt herself: not really sure whether it's comfirmed or not tho).

The best thing I like abt this novel is its overtone throughout the whole story, which is very soothing & gives u warm fluffy feelings. Lele & Song yu are both very SOFT. It's one of those novels where u'll love both MC & ml. The... more>> romance is also very very soft. The author handled the 'adoptive brothers fall in love' theme very well too, not in a shallow & overly romantized way, but in a respectful, realistic, & heart warming way.

The translation is also excellent, so it's a must-read recommendation for me. The only thing I want to warn the readers is that u shouldn't read it when u r hungry at night, bcuz there's LOTS of delicious food in every chapter.😂 <<less

This is one of my all time favorite slice of life novels. Don't let the title lead you astray, this story is incredibly compelling and deep—I cried a lot while reading it. I have read this and Fanservice Paradox by this author, and they've already made her one of my favorite danmei authors.

Summary: Yue Zhishi (MC, shou) was taken in by the Song family when he was a child as his parents had died. He absolutely adores Song Yu (ML, gong) who he considers to be his brother at the... more>> beginning of the story. However, I would like to say that we just know that he loves Song Yu and he never really put a label on it—only that his youth was entirely Song Yu's. We follow their story from when the MC is in middle school (ML is in the affiliated high school) through their university years as the MC realizes that the love he feels for the ML is more than just brotherly.
Spoiler

The ML has always loved him romantically

[collapse]

I know that this sounds like the stereotypical step-brothers to lovers trope, but this story stands apart from the rest because of the amount of character development our CP gets. Moreover, this is a story about love—all kinds of love including friendship, family, and romantic.

Plot spoilers below:

Spoiler

Favorite parts of the novel that made me cry:

  • MC confronting his adopted family when the CP came out to the ML's parents. This scene broke my heart. First because the MC reveals that he was constantly thinking of leaving the family so that the CP could be together when the parents have always considered him to be their son. Moreover, the ML reveals how much he loves the MC. I wish I could describe better how this made me feel but all I can say is that I was overwhelmed with the love in this moment. I personally don't have a great relationship with my family and seeing this scene moved my heart. Also, for the first time in the novel we truly see how much the ML loves the MC.
  • At the end of the novel, the MC confronts one of his biggest fears—earthquakes. He lost his parents in an earthquake but he is willing to go to the site of one to help the ML. Here, he helps a child who had been separated from his parents in the earthquake and he keeps this to himself.

Sorry that I'm not very good at explaining my emotions, but these two scenes made this story stand above the rest for me. The emotional complexity that the author writes is incredibly compelling and you really must read this for yourself to experience it.

[collapse]

I would also like to say that the side characters are hilarious in this as well! There's even a f/f side pairing!

This story definitely has a lot of sweet and fluffy moments, but there are lot of deep moments as well. In general, the confession and coming out scenes were some of my all time favorites. It might seem a little bit slow at the beginning because of the time in middle school, but the pace is pretty fast and the transition to them getting older is hardly noticeable at all. The development of their relationship also felt very natural and realistic.

I really hope that more people will notice this story! It's truly amazing! <<less

But don't worry he wouldn't do anything to harm our MC. MC compares ML to a cat and I hv to agree. The story is rly good too besides the smut.

The raw emotions and the characters made me tear. Its so good but why is it so heartbreaking too? If I told you that I wasn't sheding some tears when they confessed to ml's parents that they were dating I would definitely be lying.

Every character is special and all hold meaning in this book. Also why our both our leads so precious???? They make me feel so sad for them and yet so soo happy. <<less

I'm writing this before I read the extras and while it's still fresh in my mind. Mtled as well so some details might be wrong.

First of all, the pacing is just right. There's a few years' time skip but the transition (of the mc) from junior high to senior high, then to university isn't rushed and there's nothing I felt I missed.

The dynamic between MC and ML gets sweeter and sweeter every chapter - toothache inducing really.

But the thing is, the author did a really good job in showing different... more>> stages of love. From figuring out their feelings, to the honeymoon period, to conflicts and building trust, about coming out, and the compromise in all of these situations. All of these are pretty standard in romance novels but the way the author wrote it is so captivating. It's like I could also feel what they felt from across the screen.

The way the characters are written is also really good. None of that 2d no character cannon fodder. (Maybe that 1 guy but he's not that important maybe lol read to find out) Everyone from friends to love rivals, even short lived charas are relatable. The MC isn't your typical 'I'm weak, I need protection' kind of shou, and the ML also isn't just that immovable iceberg 'I'm always right' kind of gong. Details in spoiler.

Spoiler

Though it's written in his character setting that MC is a sickly character, he's actually pretty stubborn and brave when the situation calls for it. He's also a fast and calm thinker. On the other hand, ML is also written as a cold, unfeeling character, but he's actually holding in a lot of his feelings inside. He actually takes others feelings into account and it's not until the end that I realize how noble his career pursuits are. Which brings me to the next point.

BIG SPOILER YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

Near the end, an accident occurs at the site of where the ML and his group went on field work for their course. MC goes to find him and you'd see here how he overcomes a lot of his past trauma coming from the death of his loved ones. It's such a shoddy summary and I don't want to spoil all the deets, but hear me out. MC did a lot of things outside of his ability. Like both physical and emotional ability. At that point he was just so so brave and decisive I couldn't help crying my eyes out.

On ML's side, you'd see plenty of his thoughts and just about the same bravery that MC had. He pursued his career in order to avoid having any more people like MC who lost his family to natural disasters.

Some would say that it's so cliche to have this one accident in a romance novel to cement the protags' feelings for each other. But genius author did more than that. It shows acceptance and of letting go. Not in the sense of breaking up (don't worry) but that if you love the other person, let them do what they've set themselves to do and support them all the way, even if it means facing so many more difficulties up ahead.

I felt like the author built it up as a fairytale teenage love story, but the ending gave us the reality of maturity.

[collapse]

It has a very bittersweet ending. Not BE, no angst, they're sweet til the end! It's just that it's a very real take on life in general and I could very much relate to their experiences that it hit my heart (in a good way!)

Very much recommended!!

Also, papapa is 👌 hehehe~ <<less

Very realistic and warm love. Highly recommended!! The author really didn't shy away from their brother relationship. Although they aren't real brothers, they basically lived together ever since they were young kids as brothers. However, the author made sure to clearly explain their situation and showed us how their relationship slowly changed. Both were clear about what it meant to change their relationship and what they might come across after this change, Song Yu (ML) even more so. But they loved each other so much that the consequences did not... more>> seem to steer them away from their decision to be together.

I really love the character development for both the MC and ML here :") As time goes by and they move from junior high to high school to university, we get to see how their relationship progresses. It might be slightly slow at the start but once it starts to progress, that's when everything gets wayyyy better! Butbut they were cute even before they got together so it wasn't difficult to wait at all.

I love the ML the most here haha. The way the word restraint is literally engraved in his soul. He suffered a lot keeping his love for Yue Zhishi (MC) hidden for so many years. The way he tried so hard to avoid him and not influence him in any way possible. The way he tried to keep their brother relationship away from public's eye so that he could hope that one day it would be possible for them to be together without being viewed as immoral. He has tried so hard to care and love MC without being seen as too excessive or overstepping the usual boundaries. All of these really showed the huge burden that he has been carrying ever since he was a young child, that's why I feel that he is very amazing as a person.

And because of his restraint in the past, the love that he shows after he got together with MC is sooo overwhelming. He doesn't hide his feelings and his love for MC anymore since there is no need to hide anymore. Super doting and loving. I'm about to melt from his love towards the MC 🥹

As for the MC, he is literally a ball of sunshine. But just because he's a ball of sunshine doesn't mean that he has no darkness in him. He might seem innocent, naive, lovable and etc, but actually he thinks way more than you might think he does. He's an orphan, a child left to his father's friend. Someone that has nothing to his name except his foster parents and Song Yu. Despite all the love and care that was given and showed to him, it doesn't change the fact that he's an orphan with nothing to him. That's why he is always kind to others, repaying others whenever they treat him well. The way he matured as he grew older. Hais the way kids grow up so fast :") He's a rather complicated character so read to find more about it!! <<less

The build up was good, the feelings feel real and complex. Not just some superficial instant-love with no 'reasoning'.

The xxx stuff begins around chapter 60 (not sure) and its damn hot *-* also I am a fan of slight sm dynamics in the bedroom so this scratched the itch perfectly 10/10 :3

Other then in the bedroom they are equal lovers, ML is very caring and loving. MC was 3 Dimensional and his actions and thoughts were all logical imo.

So yeah I was verry happy and satisfied with this one! I... more>> feel it's especially rare to have good xx scenes on here because of censoring so I was very positively surprised! <<less

Courtesy 5 stars as I felt the story lies somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. The overall story is carefully constructed and emotionally deep but sometimes the pacing was a little slow for me.

This is a coming-of-age story about two boys who grow up in the same household but are not related by blood or marriage. Starting with their lives in junior high and progressing to university, this slice-of-life story really focuses on the main couple. Side couples exist but they don’t get much screen time. There is both sweetness... more>> and sadness as the puppy dog MC eventually realizes his feelings towards his ‘elder brother’ figure while the ML has been playing the role of big brother perfectly yet is also secretly trying to suppress his own romantic feelings towards the MC. The MC and ML both mature and strengthen as they confront insecurities, past trauma, and their own sense of morals.

Although the characters on the surface are a typical tsundere ML who excels at everything and a cute and friendly MC that everyone loves, I like how the book delves into how their past affects their behaviors and personalities.

Some may say that the pacing's too slow and it's painfully boring, but I would like to argue that on the contrary, the slow pacing made the characters' relationships and personalities more established. Additionally, slow romance is already in the tags... What do you expect? As a slice of life, there's not much ground breaking plot twists. I actually appreciate that it's slowly being built up. At chapters 20s and such, their relationship definitely doesn't seem to be that well established to start being all romance.

I adore the mc's character... more>> and his interactions with others.

As of now, it's five stars for me. <<less

This novel evoked 'strong feelings' out of me so here I am.

I'm not gonna leave a rating so this review is a little blunt... and ranty lol

Dropped at chapter 29. Why? Painfully boring and frustrating. Feels like this has been written by a complete amateur. It's like reading a story I would write whenever I'm bored during class hours to pass the time; simple, lack depth, nothing new, just anything that comes to mindーin short, excruciatingly bland and predictable.

To be fair, I have nothing against slice-of-life types of stories. As... more>> a matter of fact, it's one of my thing. I like it, actually. However, this one, I had to sigh a couple of times. A quarter of total chapters in and I still get nothing. Nada. I mean, what's in there to pursue? Both main character's background has been laid out early in the chapters, and...? School life, that's it? You see, I wouldn't be so angry if it was written with a comedic undertone but gosh, it was so darn boring I even want to congratulate AND smack myself for reaching chapter 29 because usually I would drop one after just reading 10 chapters! But why? Because I wanted to give this a chance. But alas...

So yeah, I'm gonna roast the author for a bit to vent. There's nothing new here. The main characters has no notable characteristics I could latch on to keep reading. They're not one bit interesting; just your typical straight good-hearted souls with problems. How to say this... they're just so bland. The narration is perfectly bland as well. It's like reading fillers after fillers just for the word count. Too predictable. Nothing to save me from drooping my eyes.

And the writing, sigh... You don't know how much I display a blank face every few chapters while reading, saying inside my head "and? And? So? That's it? Geez, I know what's gonna happen next *roll eyes*". And the side characters are just there to support and highlight the existence of the mains... adding to the cringe. What, fluff? Spare me. They're too pure in my eyes I cringe every time.

So do I recommend this? It depends. Do you have lots of time? Many loved it, you see (as per reviews and ratings). Personally, I really didn't like it. Like I said, it feels "amateurish". For someone like me who values time, I deeply regret reading the last 19 chapters. Such a waste of time. Usually, in the first 5 chapters, you can already evaluate the author's writing style if it's to your liking. At 10 chapters, you can already ask yourself if it got you hooked or not. Did you find the characters interesting? Did you find something intriguing and want to know more? Etc, etc... And if it's slice-of-life, it's only natural if you find the pacing slow. You could give it a couple of chapters more to decide if it's worth your time. But of course, that's just me. That's my standard/preference when reading. It's not necessarily applicable to everyone. So in this one, I happened to read a similar ones before so it's already cliche and a little cringey (welp, I don't mind cliché tropes so long as it's narrated in an interesting way tho). But sadly, it's so pure (sweet and fluffy) and too dry (no humor) for my taste. So nah.

I failed to reach half the total chapter count so I won't drop a rating but if I'm going to rate this, 2.5 will be my score. It's just the writing style, really. The storytelling is... sigh. I feel like this is meant to be read by budding novel-readers (BL or not). Careful, naive, simple, straightforward... but sorry, I'm not that 'delicate'ーcome at me! ENTERTAIN ME. I don't mind unthinkable and out-of-this-world scenes so please, go ahead, shake my world if you must!

... Just don't bore me to death. <<less

If you like slowburn (really really reaaaaally slow), slice of life and have a lot of time and patience, then this story is for you. Unfortunately, for me personally it was too slow paced and kind of repetitive at times. Stopped reading at chapter 84 because I got bored to the point I didn't even care to know how it ended. But it's not bad, just something to read to pass the time.

(Also, I did find it weird how after they got together the older brother would talk to... more>> the youngest about how he has been in love with him since they met when they were 6 and 3 years old... that doesn't seem right... :/) <<less

Zhichu always write beautiful stories and this one is just a comfort novel.

First the characters, the gong Song Yu is a very good brother to LeLe and later becomes a very good bf. He's a bit possessive but not to the point that he would restrict his lover. Only gentle towards his family especially LeLe.

Just like zhichu said, the shou isn't that strong type but he would depend on himself when the time comes. Despite his optimistic and lively personality, he isn't completely simple. The way he is afraid of... more>> his adopted family abandoning him one day, his separation anxiety makes him a complex character.

And side characters, the Song parents are very good parents. They treat their sons very well. They try to understand and accept their sons' relationship even if it's difficult for them. And the friends are also supportive of them and chaotic af (in extras lmao).

I also love that zhichu makes female characters strong, mature and understanding. No typical female villains usually seen in bl danmei.

And the lines in lovely allergen are just standard.

I don't need God to love me. It's just enough to have you.

in the beginning, I really did not expect myself to rate this book any higher than 4 stars, but alas, here we are. This took awhile for me to get into it, as it is kind of hard for all slice of life books. However, each chapter was pretty enjoyable casually, and I loved how the translator translated. I don't know if it's also cause of the original writing, but I especially loved the translation. It was just so pleasant to read.

i was reading this book casually until the latter... more>> half when it really picked up for me after they finally got together. Picked up so much that I was reading till 4am but not regretting it one bit.

strong family. Great relationship. The friends are awesome. Unexpected smut. Just overall so good. I kept thinking about the book days after I finished it.

4.5/5 Im so glad I sat through this novel and pressed on till the end! The novel went on pretty flat the first half or so. MC was just an ignorant younger brother who loved his older brother. ML is an older brother who repressed his feelings for his younger "brother". (They're not blood related btw). You could tell that ML has several layers in his character, and he has many worries (and helplessness) when dealing with this cute younger brother of his, but because he held back (as he... more>> should), nothing was really happening. Even after they finally got together, I was a little touched by their confession, but then the story went back to being a little flat. Small struggles of being busy and avoiding exposing their relationship, but nothing much else. Until the end, did I understand what this novel was building up to.

Most similar-ish novels I've read are about navigating through the society where people, and even close loved ones, hate who you are (being gay etc). But this novel went deeper beyond that. It's the helplessness of knowing that who you are, and who you love, will inevitably disappoint your parents, who truly truly love you and care for you. It's that feeling of inevitability, the struggle of trying to change and hide who you really are and love so you won't disappoint them, but knowing that you will anyways. This is the most apparent in ML's character design, but then, ho ho, it gets even more heart wrenching from MC's POV. Knowing that he will disappoint the two people who took care of him despite having no obligations to is probably just as bad, if not worse, than knowing that you'll be discriminated against by many strangers.

Anyways, TLDR, I initially felt that the novel was quite meh and was planning to give it a 4/5 at most, but the ending hit me hard in the feels. It's not something new or a fresh idea, but the presentation and the way it happened was really the right kind of angst. The good translation definitely helped. Do give it a try! <<less

Breathtakingly intense!

Seriously, intense is that only word that I can think of in defining their relationship... Song Yu and Yue zhishi feel like the two sides of a coin, existing for each other and existing because of each other... or simply put cannot exist without the other.

How their thoughts, deepest desires and longings subconsciously overlap without the others knowledge is just beautiful to a painful degree...

They both know the other as close and profoundly familiar as one's own breath, yet ironically the centre of the storm for both of their... more>> fears and anxieties remain unknown.

So damn worth it!

The growth of the their characters and the relationship is intricately fleshed out. It's very convincing, solid and deep.

For Yue Zhishi, Song Yu is that natural, instinctive, almost primal need that he subconsciously searches for like the air he desperately gulps gown during his asthma attacks... and for Song Yu, Yue Zhishi is that one and only allergen by which he'd rather die of being intoxicated than be able to live without!

A MUST READ !!! ❤ <<less

BEAUTIFUL!

The lines delivered well to portrayed the nuisance and subtle feeling between each characters, and the translator are working so hard to translate the beautiful lines into similar english terms.

There are some fine comedy, the confusion of adolescences, the pain of growing up, but overall is a happy go lucky story between the ice cold older brother with the sunny bright little brother. Please note that they are not real brothers.

The author is deserve to worshipped for some excellent smut chapters she/he wrote to perfected this story, with a little... more>> bit BD play. Maybe some people familiar with SM terms. But I have to clarify, the BD*M terms comes from Bondage Dominance Sadism Masochism. Our babies don’t have the SM tendency, they have the Dominance relationship. This story is a gem! The other reviewers have covered it well, but I want echo Ritsuka’s review that this novel has THE BEST ML. He is so incredibly well written. I started out thinking he just another stereotypical ice prince ML, but was blown away but the sheer consideration and respect he had for the MC. His “coldness” also isn’t without good reason. I rarely cry but I cried buckets when reading his letter. This man is the embodiment of wholesome love. 11/10. Cannot recommend enough.

Okay. This is probably my favorite Zhichu novel (well, I cannot decide on this one). Lovely Allergen is a slow burn that tackles a relationship between two people who grew up together. The timeline is from middle school to their college years. I really liked how the characters are fleshed out. Lele is Zhichu's cutest MC and while it may seem that he is 'fluffy', 'soft', and like a 'puppy, ' he's very strong. I remember balling my eyes out of this one.

I think Zhichu's strength in terms of their... more>> writing style, aside from poetic narrations and romantic and spicy scenes, is the way she utilizes family conflicts. You cannot help but sympathize with the characters because the family dynamics just hits close to home. This is also the strength of Lovely Allergen making it one of my favorite slice of life novels.

These are notes transferred from my Notion account. Basically, I put all the parts I liked in this spoiler. Don't open if you haven't read it.

Spoiler

It's so goooood. I love it so much. Plus, the Murmansk. The Arctic Circle nickname. The parallel universe where they did not grow up together. Aaaah. My LLB babie and my Surveying and Mapping Engineering babie. They suffered but ugh, the parents are very supportive.

I am not really a huge fan of the brothers (sorta) to lovers trope but the way Zhichu made it, it is soooo good. I love how Song Yu restrained himself until the very end and took care of Lele. I also love how Lele did not treat Song Yu's parents as his own (at first) out of respect for his deceased parents and because it'll be very awkward.

I’m only 32 chapters in so far and this has already become one of my favorites. The characters are well fleshed out and their relationships are what make this book so heartwarming. I don’t just mean the main romance either; the family relationships are so sweet and full of depth. It’s definitely a slow burn romance-wise, but you can feel the love MC & ML have for each other from the start.

There is some angst as the characters go through the typical struggles of youth and them grappling with their... more>> feelings for each other. It also explores the obstacles MC has faced being mixed race and adopted. Despite their various difficulties, he and ML always come out stronger, their love only deepening as time goes on.

This novel is truly lovely, just like the title says. Give it a chance- you won’t regret it! <<less
