I have cried, felt pain, laughed, become anxious, scared reading this book and to me only a great book can cause this many emotions in me, a good plot but it's bittersweet that this book like the great books dear to me have ruined my heart... dear translator the fear I felt when I saw the book stopped at 108, please do stop here, you need to continue, I need to know more.

I've had this book on my to-read list for a long time but I was in a book slump for a few years and I completely forgot about it. It took me 3 reads to come to terms with our MC. There is something that needs to be highlighted, the book is moderately long and whilst reading it, it felt like Nian Xuan Ji/Zhu Qi aka Xiao Qi (MC) had been through a lifetime with Long Fei Li (ML) when it's only been three months.

Our MC is competing (only because I can't find the right term to use) with Ruyi (ML's childhood love) who has been with him for 14 years. Honestly I couldn't fault the ML's initial hesitation and brutality towards the MC, she was... more>> from a family who is plotting treason hence the amount of doubts he has against her is truthfully very justified. MC's appearance disrupted his entire life's system and the constant push and pull is bound to be frustrating for the readers. The ML isn't your typical Prince on a white horse, if anything he's the underworld's demon lord who only knows bloodshed and betrayals. With that in mind, if anyone is asking for a sweet and understanding ML right of the bat he isn't one. He is cruel.

When MC was still recuperating from her stab wounds, she knocked out a maid to sneak out just to return to her residence. In return ML killed the maid and proceeded to threaten that if she left his chambers he would proceed to kill the rest of the maids and eunuchs serving her. ML was paranoid over losing her at this point, hence he's keeping her close and refusing to let her out of his sight.

Despite his brutality, the paranoia of the ML is very present throughout the entire novel. The amount of times he vowed to protect her and keep her safe only to lose her was very prevalent. From the time she took the knife on herself, as if trying to ease the guilt in his heart, he never stopped vowing to keep her safe and always be within arms reach of each other. I wouldn't say LFL is the best ML out there but he definitely committed once he realised he was in love with her.

Towards the end, his admission that he didn't trust her love enough was what caused her heartbreak, pain and suffering. I think this was very pivotal moment and very bittersweet.

"It's honestly very easy. It's just that before losing her he couldn't see things clearly. She loves him. As long as he believes she loves him. As long as he believes her"

The MC was the character I felt was somewhat lacking, she wasn't weak or a pushover by any means I just felt like she could have been more. She wanted to leave the ML many times but with him being obsessive and possessive, he obviously gave her no chances at all. I think it took me a while to come to terms with the MC because she loves the ML so much and then it click for me that through all the pain and heartbreak she did try to draw the line between both of them but she was ultimately still blind to her love. Every time she saw ML in danger the only thought and instinct that crossed her mind was sacrificing herself to save him. She never hesitated and this made me frustrated for her as a person. Nonetheless the MC is a quite funny character, constantly swearing with no sense of propriety.

I have a soft spot for the second male lead, Bai Zhan Feng, his existence is meant to contrast ML with him, yin and yang. It wouldn't be a dramatic story if we're stuck with the same prince charming character hence BZF is the one left behind. Nonetheless, he was a good second male lead. Also his backstory and existence is very interesting, I love what the author did there. It caught me by surprise.

The Snow Wolf King Ah Xue was in love with Zi Su his soul split into 3 beings after he reincarnated. They are Bai Zhan Feng, Xue Liu Jing and Bai Zi Xiu. They each represent a type of longing for our MC:

love, obsession and hate (not accurate but it's like a hateful longing) . This was definitely the plot twist that caught me by surprise. Very well played by the author herself.

The other supporting character that caught my attention was Qin Feng, he was such a complex character struggling between love and hate over the MC. He has trust issues towards women due to his personal experiences. Xiao Qi challenging his beliefs lead him to a personal inner struggle that he cannot come to terms with. I enjoyed seeing moments of him hovering between love and hate and then regret and guilt that plague him towards the end of the story.

If I had a giant criticism it would be the author bringing in other characters from the 21st century. I felt that Zhui Zhui and Yu Huan was an unnecessary addition to the novel. This is just a personal preference but I hated seeing a friendship collapse over a guy. It just felt so lame, Ru Yi herself was a pitiful character considering everything. Zhui Zhui's introduction felt like the author was trying to make an antagonist out of her for the sake of plot, I felt there wasn't a need for another person (especially a friend) going against our MC. The author could have weave another plot with someone whom the ML trusted betrayed him or Ru Yi turning dark due to ML falling in love with Xiao Qi, that would have been more heartbreaking. I honestly wasn't fond of this part of the novel at all. Yu Huan was a loyal friend through and through but like I said above, an unnecessary addition. It ended up being slightly cliche.

The book wasn't perfect by any means but it delivered enough, the world building was intricate and the story flowed very smoothly. I was quite surprised that I breezed through 200 chapters fairly quickly. In my honest opinion I don't think the angst is very severe as LFL was very steadfast towards his love. The angst for me was 3/5 at most. As Catharcity said "it is a fluff story masquerading as an angst novel". I would recommend this book for readers new to angst, this is the perfect book to enjoy angst without the tragedy.

5+++ stars for catharcity's translations. I would dare say that t/l did it better with regards to the tone. I could say that she inherently has a melancholic style in writing which added up to the really strong angst of the material. Anyway pbg has also been doing so well. I have my own english trans for my friends but comparing what I've written to the released ones, I can only blink myself to shame haha.

Anyway for the story? Damn I've read the raws and I love everything about it.... more>> Mo Wu Bi Ge is such a good sadistic author. 5/5 too! One to my liking. Perhaps people have been throwing stones in this one saying the FL is so s*upid for keeping up with such a tyrant, especially for one who has transmigated from the future. But I guess you missed the fact that she is originally a very old soul.

She is Zi Su, the seventh daughter of the previous Heavenly Emperor and her love for the ML rooted from another lifetime. Actually, everything is perfectly captured in the title. This is their love in another life. Plus ML is a real Gentle Tyrant.

For people who has been really hard on Long Feili, I'm not sure if we have read the same material lol, but for someone who has finished this, even though he has been very brutal, all of his actions was explained and paid off. But in the end, he never really wanted to harm Xuanji.

They started on wrong foot. The fact is he only saved her from the killing hands of the Empress Dowager because she saved

Due to some misunderstanding, Xuanji thought that it was Long Feili that she saved and it became soooo devastating when she found out the truth.

This favor sparked Long Feili's affection. And he was of course initially confused if he was doing this for his original intent, or is actually falling in love. One could never argue about this confused feelings. He has loved his childhood sweetheart for so long. And this "loved one" has been having a very special task

so Long Feili could not immediately identify whether his feelings for this new concubine is really true. Especially because he has known his childhood sweetheart for 14 years already. This explains all the coldness, and his hesitations whenever something happens.

Even when he placed Xuanji for execution. We all know why Xuanji could not tell the truth about the one who r*ped her and the father of her baby. It was because

in surface, she also blamed herself for the gu. The gu can only be planted via s*xual interc**rse, and Long Xiuwen initially placed it on her to be transferred to Long Feili. So indirectly, she caused this poison. And the bigger fact is that Long Feili would die if he finds out about it, either via heart attack, or because he would kill Long Xiuwen. Let's remember that the gu is a twin gu (child-mother gu) which is also in Long Xiuwen's heart. If he kills Long Xiuwen which what exactly will happen, he would surely die.

So... Everything has his reasons. Even the happenings that lead to this r*pe scene were perfectly leading to believe that it was actually Bai Zhanfeng. Xuanji enlisted Zhanfeng's help in order to solve the gu case and made it secret to Long Feili obviously, so all circumstances lead him to believe that it was Zhanfeng who is Xuanji's baby daddy. Some people would say he should have trusted Xuanji. But if you put yourself in Long Feili's shoes, you would also think the same. It was a really pathetic situation. But it was real-- this feelings.

Anyway, I love all the angst. My favorites are
- when Xuanji found out the identity Long Feili's first love
- when she saw the concern in Long Feili's eyes when his first love is in danger
- whenever Long Feili leaves her to attend to the sick "first love"
- whenever Long Feili realizes all of Xuanji's sacrificial actions
- Long Feili's mixed anger and love. It was so angsty that even though he wanted her dead (as she even boldly said one time that it was really Bai Zhanfeng's child), he really loved her

I mean, I know these are all supposedly s*upid and hurtful, but whenever Long Feili realizes what he has done, it was all very soothing.

I could've liked it better if the revelation when Long Feili found out who really r*ped Xuanji was not just a narration. Because that was what I was waiting for in the beginning. But it was just okay. At least the angsty reunion made up for it when

Zhu Qi with her original face and body transmigrated to Xiliang again with a deal with teh heavens that Long Feili should recognize her despite having another face, and Xuanji's body still lying in the coffin

But it was a really really good ride. I don't really like the extras so much. I'm not particularly sure if the xianxia part when they became immortals again and the issue with their son is as good as the grounded angsty parts, but all in all, with the main text, it is 5/5

But to each their own. This may not be everyone's cup of tea. But it is mine. I hope everyone read the tags before the dive into something rather than judging them for a genre that is not what it is. Read read read! <<less

I had enough of this.

I thought it'll be a good read since lotsss of reviews say so. But dang. The amount of time FL sacrifice herself makes my head ached so bad. She sacrifice so much for him yet he always left her confused. What is she in his heart? Do she's important to him? She always ask this in her mind but never actually ask him, and once she ask him. He answer "don't make trouble"

IDK, I'll never like the ML. At first when I read this I took the ML action was right, but then again and again he left me dissapointed. Nah. I'm done.

The ML is so childish. I mean he always want to hurt FL by making her see him being lovely dovy with other woman. At this point I will npt blame FL if she confused wherever this jerk mf ML ever truly love her. Second. OMFG she lost her memories you damn dork! And you just force her and being mean toward her just because she run away BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T BELIEVE YOU omfg, she lost her memories and thought you are a bad guy and believe she had a husband somewhere else and you a kidnapper (?). And then you punish her with being f*ckn lovely dovy with other woman in the name of "you deserve this, I wait for you. But you run away" ONCE AGAIN, SHE LOST HER MEMORIES YOU DORK!

And FL being so weak like omg I just can't. I- I had enough.

At this point I feel the angst it's just so so 😐🔫

So I'm giving this 5 stars because not only are the translations excellent, the romance and ANGST! is out of this world addictive. Like crack. I binged this in 3 days.

Anyways...I will say, the modern and fantasy elements seemed a bit unnecessary and convoluted. I could've done with all the extra stuff and each main character having three counterparts plus with the MTL the body-swapping and reincarnation stuff got super confusing.

The ML might make you want to ragequit but if you love angst and whump this is totally worth it.... more>> I've gotta go read everything else this author has ever written now! <<less

The novel that got me into reading web novels.

catharcity's translations are beautifully poignant, and so moving that I cried when reading the first couple of chapters.

I fell in love with the story so hard that I read the Chinese novel from the raws and binge-read the entire novel to completion. I think the story has the perfect blend of angst, intriguing plot and captivating characters, along with plot twists along the way that keep you hooked all the way to the end.

If I had to nitpick, I wish the magical/supernatural (?) aspect could have been more developed/explained, because I really want to know more about the magic, the gods and the celestial realm and the war that was supposedly going on. I haven't read the other novels by Mo Wu Bi Ge like Chuan Qi though, so maybe they go more into the backstory and mythology.

If you are looking for something new not the usual cliché historical novels that seems to condense this website then this novel is for you. The translation is one of the best that I have seen, the plot of the story is quite angsty but I read this novel until 5 am which means I didn't get any sleep but it was worth it, we need more novels like this, I am fed up with cliché-ass novels.

This was an emotional rollercoaster ride for me, but I loved it! I’m usually a quiet reader so this is the first review I’m writing and it’s super long, which shows how much I enjoyed it! I definitely recommend this story to those looking for angsty romance and a plot with substance. The story primarily focuses on their second life time which was a result of the first life time as gods.

The story is long, so I’m very thankful to the hard works of the translators. I had to MTL... more>> the rest of the story which was readable and understandable but some background stories were a bit unclear. I would reread the book again when translations are out just to be able to fully immerse in such a wonderful story. The writing style of the author is very interesting, descriptive and vivid. The author sometimes transition between past, present and future, and from different perspectives. I felt that it was well done and I enjoyed the writing style, especially the glimpses of their past and the perspective of other characters (either side characters or other totally irrelevant characters).

There are many characters and too many to describe so I’ll review the two mains:

MC is a strong-willed and head-first kind of person who has her own principles and values and would stubbornly and persistently act and stick to those beliefs. This personality is what gets her into trouble most of the time in an ancient and hierarchal setting. Although I found her unyielding character somewhat annoying, this was a virtue I grew to admire, along with the many friends and suitors (many male characters do fall for her) she made along the way. She is ridiculously loyal and protective to the point of self-harm. She is self-sacrificing and I can’t begin to count the number of times she almost died. Unlike other MCs from other novels who would scheme and get revenge by not lifting a finger, our MC always dives in first and fight for her people and beliefs (sometimes with or without a plan). Some may say that she’s naive and s*upid but from my perspective she is just unable to sit back and watch those she loves suffer. She is not entirely s*upid, in fact, she is clever and witty in her own way. She got a good grasp on the different power plays, harem schemes, and royal politics (but she can never really guess what the ML is thinking and planning, trust me, nobody really can). She grows to adapt to the environment but she refuses to hurt and kill others because that’s not who she is which causes her inconsiderable loss. There is a point in the story where she cries to the ML asking if she should change but of course she doesn’t, that just wouldn’t be her. In spite of her unruly character and behavior, she is not unreasonable and is instead very understanding. As long as it doesn’t go against her beliefs and hurt her people, she will not interfere. She has a lively, and genuine personality with a sense of justice which is what makes many fall for her. She is like the voice of reason in the story. On the down side, despite being quite independent with her own mind, she relies heavily on the protection of the ML and others which is unavoidable due to her position and zero-fighting powers.

ML is almost the exact opposite of the MC. Ascending to the throne at a young age, he is a master schemer with deep thoughts. He is rational and decisive and can be ruthless and cruel to those he don’t care about. He only cares for a small group of people but he never factored in the MC who suddenly barged into his cold world. She was a variable that made him lose rationale and control for the first time. The ML has aspirations to clean the royal court up and, ultimately, make his land and people prosper. The original body of the MC was his pawn to eventually incite war among the different powers in court. He goes through a lot of inner turmoil due to his responsibilities, obligations, and goals which conflicts with his true feelings for the MC. His initial self-denial led to many contradicting behaviors towards the MC, constantly alternating from hot to cold; one moment he seems to be protecting her, but next he pushes her away with harsh words. The MC suffers a lot but eventually the ML realizes that he doesn’t want her dead. At first his bottom-line was just keeping her alive but it grew to something more, indulging in her more, ultimately, giving her the sole love and heart of the monarch.

Their love story is very rocky, riddled with obstacles and misunderstandings. Some may feel that the love was unbalanced in the beginning, with the MC suffering so much and sacrificing so much for the ML.

In fact, even I wanted to call it quits for the MC. However, as the story progressed and we understand more of the perspective of the ML: his dilemmas, his indulgence to the MC, his possessiveness, and his every little deliberations in protecting her, we can see that he truly loves her. While she loves him straightforwardly, he cannot do the same due to politics and protecting her. Once again, there are many misunderstandings but their love grows stronger after every obstacle.

What happened when she died at the beginning of the story:

The MC dies after 3yrs (which is how the story started and gets caught up near middle-end of story) and there will be a time skip of another 3yrs in which she returns in a different body.

After she died, the ML was devastated and immediately departed to Xian Yantai to revive her. He was told that she will return once her soul has recovered. During the 3yrs, the ML preserved her body (which was in a sleeping state) and she was conferred the empress.

In exchange for returning to his side, she made an agreement with Buddha that within a few months’ time she will make him realize who she is. Which starts the second half of their story in their second life.

In case you guys are wondering why she died at the beginning:

The ML misunderstood her to have an affair with the general. The general was always a deep rooted demon in him due to the special relationship the MC has with the general. When they got together, he chose to believe, trust and wait for her to be ready to tell him everything about herself (her modern status, and why she seems to know so much about the general). However, when she was found to be pregnant, hs reason, anger and emotions broke him. There was so much evidence pointing to her affair and her attitude in protecting the General and refusal in saying the truth, altogether, led him to exert to extreme measures. Even when he imprisoned and shackled her, he never wanted to sentence her to death, he just wanted to expel his anger but he chose the wrong method and his anger blinded him from trusting her and believing the person that she is. He never expected his eunuch Xu Xi to not give her medications despite his instructions leading to her death of blood loss and miscarriage. (To those who wants the spoiler to her pregnancy and why she isn’t telling the truth, you can go to the forum for spoilers for the book)

My review has always been kinda personal, bcs when I read any story I would immersed in the storyline. I want to finish this story but I couldn’t. The angst is too painful that I’m having hard time breathing. So I’m gonna stop here.
If I’m the FL, I would’ve run away. Wouldn’t bother getting hurt at every turn, just leave’em.

Nevertheless, 5 ⭐️ from me.

The angst in this one is real!

I have been looking all over for really heartbreaking stories and this one has hit its mark (The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir is a close second). I am sooo glad someone has continued with the translation.

I skimmed through the novel. It is very angsty. Personally I can’t find a way to like such an abusive male lead, even if he is the emperor and I get his circumstances. As for the FL she is quite pitiful with her love brain. You probably guessed the story isn’t for me and I dislike the leads. However, It is a very captivating story I have to say and well written. So if you like angsty story this one is for you.

Tranlations are good nd the novel is written very well....... both ML and FL suffered well ofcourse MC suffered more, atfirst I didnt like the MC cuz she was acting a bit toooo s*upid but later the things she suffered are very heartbreakaing. So yeah its a gud read👍👍

Just started this and I like how the ML is the ruthless, cold hearted kind but he loves the MC so much and actually shows it, unlike in many stories where it's hard to justify the as*hole ML's actions.

That being said, the reincarnation and time travel plot seems to come out of nowhere early on and is quite complicated. This isn't a spoiler as it happens in like what, the first 10 chapters? I'm not sure if the original MC already has a relationship with the ML, or they only... more>> started falling for each other once the MC from the future transmigrated into her body. Because if it's the former, then who did the ML fall for? And if it's the latter, what happened to the original MC if she isn't dead, and appears to have gone back into her body again? I get that it's supposed to be a different plot twist but it feels needlessly complicated, and dampens the angsty ambience. One moment I'm reading a tragic drama between the MC and ML and the next thing I know, with the sudden time travel back into the past, it seems to have become some almost comedic drama with the modern day MC waking up to a weird world and a strange emperor.

The translation is nonetheless beautifully done, one of the best I've read online. So, I think I will stick around longer to see how the plot pans out. Hopefully things will be explained with enough sense. I also don't like misunderstandings as plot device, and I don't get how

the MC can't tell the ML some apparently huge secret cause it will cause him to die. I mean... if you are telling him alone, he can just choose to keep silent about it? Why will it lead to his death if only he and a few people know about it? He doesn't seem the kind to commit su*cide either and clearly has shown he will do anything to stay with the MC. It just doesn't add up. I wonder what huge secret it is and how the author plans to justify it.

I usually dont read this type if book, I usually like a quick witted FL or revenge type of plot, but this was really sth else.

I really liked the writers style, and I appretiated how everything happened with a reason

An angst love story, beautifull translated by catharcity and lissu land. Thx for picking up the project.

What I like with the female character is that she is not OP, she is just an average girl with originality that is fresh for me

this novel is for you if you like some angsty story (the emotion is deeeeppp), I would say you can't find anything quite similar to this. They hate and love in very intense way. I can't wait to binge reading again when all the translation is complete!

This is absolutely intense. Truth be told, I've only read up to chapter 4 and I'm already trembling.

This is an amazing story, but it is quite violent (emotionally wise). I've decided to put it on hold, and wait until it's fully translated. I really can't take the emotional roller-coaster that comes with the start of the chapters. Hence, I hope that once everything is translated, I'll be able to truly have a peace of mind.

For whoever wishes to give it a try; it truly is... A beautiful yet cruel story.... more>> It's not tragedy, because there IS a happy ending. However, the road towards the happy ending is paved by endless tragedy, at least up until chapter 4. <<less
