The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

The way I describe this book is as follows: Imagine there's a really good cake. The foundation of the cake is good. Now imagine really, really bitter icing on top of the cake. No matter how good the cake is, you can't avoid tasting the icing.

The plot is the cake. The plot is actually really good and could stand on its own without the icing, in my opinion. The icing is the non-con and dub-con.

A big warning that I didn't read anywhere here before I started was: The non-con is... more>> written in as if you would like it.

I think that's one of the main disturbing things for people about this book.

At first I thought I was crazy, reading and suspecting that the non-con was being presented in such a way. But it becomes evident the further in you get. Even if you make it through the non-consensual scenes at the beginning, when you finally get to some beautiful consenting scenes between our two mains, r*pe flashbacks are woven in to the scenes. The author assumes that these flashbacks wouldn't completely ruin the mood. She jumps back and forth between the memories, combining different scenes of r*pe and consent, purposefully looking for similarities. This is when I realized I am not the target audience.

The content itself was not nearly as bad as I had thought it would be, but this particular aspect of the writing described above was deeply disturbing. I imagine would also be disturbing for many others. Better to be prepared! Though as I stated at the beginning, the plot itself is great. The live action in production further enhances this point. They wouldn't bother filming it if they didn't believe the plot could survive without the heavy focus on dub-con/non-con. The emotional effects from this story are so profound that you will remember the rescues, breakdowns, etc. For a very long time afterwards. It's a beautiful plot! <<less

I feel like everyone loves this one but I just... couldn't. There are parts of it that are really, truly great - incredible characters, beautiful concepts - but the pacing is shaky and overall it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.

Let me say first, and I mean this as a compliment, that this story is Ambitious with a capital A. The scope of it is huge. There are so many threads interweaving with each other that it's like a godd*mn tapestry. Most authors don't even attempt this... more>> level of complexity. The fact that Meatbun was this successful in accomplishing this deserves its own award.

The problem is that there are SO many things introduced that some of them just sort of get forgotten about. The tapestry is beautiful from far away, but the closer you get the more you realize how many strings just... never get tied off. Plot points that never go anywhere. Character mysteries that are never resolved. Things that happen just for the sake of angst. Plus I think sometimes (or maybe a lot of the time) the author got too excited about high-concept fancy magic stuff and forgot to put the same amount of effort into character development/growth, even for the leads.

There is also the obvious trigger warning, which I'm not a fan of, personally, and definitely affected my overall rating. But I will say that even more than that, I had a bigger problem with the way this was handled here specifically:

Spoiler

It felt like once we find out what led Mo Ran to become Taxian-Jun, Chu Wanning has no choice but to forgive him. Suddenly nothing is Mo Ran's fault actually, and he has nothing to apologize or atone for, and Chu Wanning just has to be like, "Oh okay, well I guess I can't be mad about all those years of violent r*pe and torture and mu*der then." It felt like a cop-out, and it felt cheap. Mo Ran still did all those things, regardless of why, and Chu Wanning just was no longer allowed to feel anything other than guilt about it. It took away the last dregs of Chu Wanning's agency and I hated it.

[collapse]

I get why people like this one. It's angsty. It's [insert fire emojis] spicy. Meatbun is incredible at painting scenes and visuals. It just was not for me. I do love the farm arc though. <<less

I made this account just so I can sh*t on this novel. To give you all a perspective I've seen plenty of dog blood Chinese novels. The ones that make your blood boil. The one which makes you writhe in pain and frustration. Somehow this novel tops ALL of them.

I absolutely detest the MC, he has nothing worth rooting for him. I abhor him. I'd rather the ML never live than to see them together. It's infuriating in simple words. Nothing, I repeat, nothing the MC does can make me... more>> see him in a good light. The best way this novel can end is the MC d*es and the ML goes to therapy. <<less

To be honest I dont see the appeal of this one. It reminds me alot of those nonsensical dog blood (or in my words, pain p*rn) books or dramas that go on for episodes/chapters with seemingly no end in sight. And I know theres of course an overarching plot, but when you, as a reader, can basically see everything in advance and any and all issues is based on misunderstandings, it's just very frustrating.

And maybe it's because most dog blood novels are shorter than this one that the feeling of... more>> impatience doesnt arise as much, but this one is so long (in turns of how long the drama continues, as I've read longer books) and more than half is filled with misunderstanding induced conflict (which can be boring, esp if it's the same misunderstanding reused). It sometimes feels like a very dramatic stage play, anything that can go wrong will go wrong and anything that can cause anguish will be implemented.

With that being said, the character development for the MC (gong) is solid. But that's probably it. Even the ML (shou) gets characterized very strangely.
Spoiler

As some viewers have said, him being r*ped and tortured shouldn't have been the reason the author have for us to sympathize with him. I really feel as though they went overboard. And not because I'm faint hearted about that kind of stuff, but because it felt less like me sympathizing and more like I was watching pain for the sake of pain. It took me out of the moment and I was left wondering why we couldn't just get attached to the ML normally?

[collapse]

Also I didn't mind how s*upid the MC was as he grew and that was the point except
Spoiler

The ending with the merging of the him of the past and the changed him s**ked ass. I feel like it devalued everything the ML went through with the r*pe and the torture. It felt like a perpetrator of abuse finally managed to mend his ways only to end up right back where he started. Very very frustrating.

[collapse]

Anyway I can see why some like it, though I do feel the rating should be a bit lower. I've read lower rated novels than this that were objectively better in terms of storyline and characters. It feels a bit inflated. <<less

THIS IS THE BEST NOVEL I HAVE EVER READ!!!! Can I give 6 out of 5 stars. It deserves more.

Dun get fooled by the cute title or dun look down bcux it sounds ridiculous. It is not a fluff but super angsty.

the plot is well-written (full of knives tho) and u will feel like riding a roller coaster while reading this.

... more>> If u luv angsts, you should definitely read this! U won’t regret it. Some chapters made me cried a lot and my heart broke into pieces.

The chemistry between the couple is so heart-touching (Altho I wanted to beat up the ML in the beginning chapters). I dun say out loud how much they cherish each other but instead show it with actions. This is what I love most about it.

And Moran and Chu Wanning are so cute and precious that I want to keep them in my pocket and protect ???

There are 300+ chapters in total but I can’t get enough of this and want more <<less

After reading MANY chinese BL novels, including this one, I came back and made an account specifically to vent about this work.

When I talk to my friends about BL novels and I have to describe this one, I usually say: Oh, that one that had the incredible plot but turned into a complete DUMBSTER FIRE in the end.

Mind you, I've read through this almost twice (I dropped it the second time nearly half way cause NOPE)

While you first start reading this novel, it is impossible not to enjoy it.... more>> The MC has two things in mind after reincarnation: 1) Save the one he loves who died in vain in his previous life and 2) revenge for that death. The motivations seem pretty clear-cut and regardless of everything, you REALLY want to see how this person, with the wisdom of his previous life is going to accomplish his goals.

Quite honestly, in the beginning of this novel, all I could think of was "WOW, this writer is handling this reincarnation plot so interestingly".

(General minor spoiler)

Spoiler

For the majority of the first half of the book, one get's to enjoy all the complex interactions of the MC and the ML. MC slowly but steadily starts to realise that maybe ML is not so bad after all. We see the MC start to grow a bit, his past slowly catching up to him and filling him with guilt. But growth is good. He eventually seems determined not to be the crazy person that he was in his other life so all is good... right? NOPE.

[collapse]

I remember reading the novel for a second time, being half way to the end and thinking "Huh, so the good parts of this book actually lasted this long before?". You see, after I read it the first time I hated everything so much that the good parts of this novel seemed so insignificant and then I hated the writer even MORE.

(Medium spoiler)

Spoiler

After MC starts to care about the ML, while knowing how he had treated him in his previous life, the angst along with the character growth is de-lecious~. The inner turmoil of "I like that ML is so nice" to "WHY is ML so nice" which leads to "Shit, I used to be terrible to this nice ML" is very fun to read, tbh. Of course, having the ML's POV makes this even for frustrating and addictive to read.

[collapse]

And eventually, after you start loving the world and the characters of this book and the MC and ML start getting closer and closer, one starts to sweat about it. The reader has one question in his mind: How is the MC going to redeem himself?

(MAJOR SPOILERS AFTER THIS)

Spoiler

Mind you, of course I had been warned by that r*pe tag and some of the reviews but I trully believed that with the way the story was going, maybe the writer could fix things. I knew that eventually the truth would come to light, especially with ML starting to have some memory bleed-through effect from his previous life. I thought that since 1) MC seemed remorseful for what he had done then 2) Dead-set on not doing that again and actually treasuring the ML and 3) R*pe taking place in that past life alone, that there was a good chance the relationship could somehow survive and I'd be okay with this.

But how? I wondered, "How can this writer make me love this relationship knowing that r*pe is r*ape?"

[collapse]

AND THEN IT HAPPENED.

Meatbun actually, in the biggest twist of all, gave the MC the best get-out-of-jail-free card EVER.

Spoiler

With the knowledge that all the evil deeds MC commited in his previous life were all because of that cursed evil flower, planted in him by none other than the sweet, sweet Shī Mèi, Meatbun had managed to give MC the most impossible of pardons.

[collapse]

I was ecstatic, tbh. I wanted so badly to ease my conscience and continue to root for the MC's love guilt-free. BUT NOPE. NOPENOPENOPE

Spoiler

In the most unpleasant turn of events ever, not only did they not utilize the best get-out-of-jail-free card to let the couple live happily ever after, but apparently Meatbun's idea of an ending was the ML to continue being with BOTH versions of MC (the kind and wiser one and the r*pist) BECAUSE HE LOVES MC NO MATTER WHAT. f*ck. THAT.

[collapse]

f*ck.

THAT.

SO YEAH.

Frankly, this gets a star because the world-building and the plot-twists (for the most part) were phenomenal. But that's all my conscience will allow. It's just... SUCH A PITY. <<less

Ok I know many people like this but I cant, I JUST CANT. And that is coming from someone who likes his MC to suffer, even if its the ML the one hurting him I can forgive ML after he suffer and pay it back BUT I. CANT. THIS. TIME.

I hate, detest, and have a shear aversion to Moran that he can be reborn as mother theresa and I will still want this bastard to burn in hell, I dont want him even in the same continent, heck in the... more>> same fcking universe as CWN, I dont care for his so called change, it turns my stomach thinking that he is together with CWN in his second life, he also do not, I REPEAT HE DOES NOT DESERV TO EVEN PUT A FOOT ON HIS SECT OR SEE HIS COUSING TO THE FACE, THIS POS SHOULD HAVE CORRECTED HIS WRONGS AND HELP THE WORLD BY XXXXX HIMSELF

Spoiler

"He had not yet killed his uncle and aunt, not yet razed seventy two cities to the ground, not yet betrayed his teacher and ancestors"

"Mo Ran was filthy. Shi Mei was too gentle and pure. He wasn’t worthy of someone like Shi Mei." yeah the pure white lotus you dont dare to dirty that ends up been a villain who hates you

"Mo Ran glanced at him from a distance. Although he thought he had prepared himself, when he saw this man appear in front of him alive and healthy again, it made him tremble down to his smallest bones.

Half fear, half... excitement. His Shizun. Chu Wanning." he is exited not because he is happy, he is exited because at this very moment we are seen a r*pist see his victim again, you do the math as to why an abuser will be "exited" to see the victim he has r*ped, abused, humiliated, tortured, and broken beyond repair in his last life

"What he had been thinking really was looking for a way to f*ck Chu Wanning to death. " more like r*pe him again in this second life, this is not "cute" not the death part is a euphemism given how he did break and killed ML in his last life, now that his broken toy is back as new he wants to break it again, this is no her/anti hero, this is a scumbag

"Hehe, if Chu Wanning could know what happened in his previous life, he would know - in the end, Mo Weiyu was the only one deserving of respect in the world. No matter how noble and arrogant Chu Waning was, he was still a piece of mud under his boot. Didn’t he depend on Mo Ran’s good will to survive?" again you can see him planning to break ML and how lowly he considers him, also guess who made ML be so dependent of this sh*t, since we are in the spoiler part, this bastard had ML dancing and breaking for so long because ML suffering and begging was the only thing keeping this bastard cousin and the surviving cultivators alive.

Also the freacking r*pe scenes, why just why, if the author wanted us to even try to like MC why give us such horrible explicit scenes were is obvious that ML is UNWILLING and feels humiliated on top of it, he even BEGS MC to just kill him and stop humiliating him like that, and in the second life MC STILL thinks of of ML as his toy, and the only reason he change his plan of doing it all over again its because he discover that ML had always been his greatest benefactor/protector/loving person toward him, he does not feel shame or remorse for what he did and only start to change after he discovers how wrong he was. The fact that author tries to say that moran is just a moron that does not understand his own heat and that he was evil because of a curse is a sh*tty explanation and the only way out he had to make it "palatable" all that was done, and why did he had to make ML blame himself for what Moron did????. CWN is the most undeserving of everything that happened to him.

[collapse]

If you enjoy it good for you, I cant stomach it and really wish MC died in the end and ML found someone worthy of him <<less

Uhh... I'd say I have mixed feelings about this one. If you like LOADS of angst, xianxia, r*pe scenes, a scum gong (he's the MC here tho+ he will get really clingy and pampering later), but actually a lot of touching and cute moments as well then this novel would be probably perfect for you. Don't get me wrong here, there are more pros as well so just:

PROS:

    • Author's writing, really poetic and beautiful. This one here is probably like 50% of what made me read to the end.
    • Their relationship when they got together, made me get butterflies fr. MC becomes really gentle and ML finally gets some happiness. Also, the angst stops there for a while.
    • Papapa scenes hehe. They're well-written and explicit. And that they were included in the first place ofc lol.
CONS:

    • Phew... so looking at the whole picture, the relationship is literally so toxic. Like I mentioned before- r*pe scenes. A lot of them. (btw idk why is there so many of them, they made me so uncomfortable...)
      Spoiler

Of course yeah, the plot twist shows that MC being scum and raping wasn't his fault blah blah blah, but I don't buy it.

      [collapse]
    • Um, not sure if that's a con, but in the beginning, MC is in love with someone else.
      Spoiler

Like he mostly fell in love with that person, because of something claimed by them but done by the ML

      [collapse]
I just found it really frustrating as the ML was constantly getting hurt of that. Eh, dog blood.
    • Also idk, the ending is a HE, but I just had mixed feelings about it.
      Spoiler

like lmao I literally hate Taxian-Jun and basically having Mo Ran 2.0 share a body and Chu Wanning with him just made me feel like they were in a threesome with a scum. It may be just me tho lol (hope I didn't get anything wrong here cuz I didn't finish the extras)

      [collapse]

First and foremost: You can pry this novel from my cold dead hands. I really REALLY enjoyed this. It's the type of novel that would've ended earlier if people will just learn how to talk to each other. But like real life, conversations are hard especially if already involves prejudice and careless decisions. It's like throwing peas at the wall. Now, if you amped it up with two lifetime's worth of resentment, you get 2HA.

The novel opens up with a typical time travel scenario: MC is now back at the... more>> past, a second chance he never thought of having. But his awareness of things that have yet to happen caused a lot of changes that forced him to face previously misunderstood emotions and regrets. The novel then becomes an onion: you will soon find yourself busy with peeling layers and layers of pain and angst that also makes you cry.

Overall, it's a surprisingly good, if you think you've read all the pining danmeis usually have, then this will surprise you. You will bleed. <<less

I made an account just to write this.

Too many damn feels.

And of course I loved it, every single character in the story, whether the MC or the Villain in this story. This novel have the best character development I ever seen. Althought MC have a lot of misunderstanding at first, so many that I have an urge to throw blood, its resolved in the end though. Most of the character have their own motive and story, the plot and mystery make you rethink every single step the character made. Engaging,... more>> full of action and heart pounding. Not your typical rebirth story. A must read gem.

Though beware of the roller coaster of feel... (This story is full of blades, Moran shizun QAQ they deserve the best things in the world)

I wish there are more fluff for the two main character though, can't get enough of them hahahaha <<less

Really enjoyed this from start to finish. Not a story for everyone, especially anyone sensitive about certain R18 topics, but its a spectacularly emotional and sensational tale full of badassery, tragedy, tears, and heart-pounding. I was wary going in, but those feelings were completely unfounded. Chu WanNing is one of the best characters I've encountered in danmei so far, and by far the most compelling.

If I had to point to a theme for this work, its that nothing is as it seems, so don't make any hasty judgements. Fantastic read,... more>> lots of fun, enjoyable from start to finish. The final arc was incredible, far better than most I've read, and this story made me cry harder than anything else ever has. <<less

This novel is totally overrated. I only gave it 3 stars because of the excellent translations so thank you translator (s). The first time I read it, I dropped the novel in the first few chapters when the master started blushing; acting all sappy over his TEENAGE disciple. The second time I tried reading it, I dropped it when he got sick and turned into a chibi. It is SO NOT cute! That part of the story was so unnecessary and a turn off. Again, he’s a master and this... more>> was supposed to be a serious story setting, however, it turned Chu Wanning into a joke, just like his chibi caricature. All the long, 5 star, reviews kept raving and egging us on, “ don’t give up. It gets better! It is so good!!!” Not really. Chu Wanning is supposed to be a master, at the top of his game, but he acts like a ninny around his TEENAGE disciple. You’d think it would get better after Mo Ran grew up, but then Chu Wanning would reminiscent about the early days when teenager Mo Ran was in his heart; whether Mo Ran hated him, or what Mo Ran thought of him. Ugh!!! A MASTER acting like a love lorn teenager. Total turn off. (At least Mo Ran acted his age when he was a teenager and in his adult years). Chu Wanning is a total disaster as a master and after he resurrected. Read it for the great translations because I wish every novel on Novel Updates could be translated like this. Otherwise, read it just so you can go thru what I went through. Hahaha. <<less

edit: not sure why my rating didn't save but okay
Three stars because this author's writing is honestly so well written, and the translations are a decent effort as well. I held back on reviewing until I finished reading the original raws. TL;DR at the end

As much as I wanted to love this story for how great the writing is, I honestly couldn't really enjoy it. While there are great twists and turns, plus the factor of the completely unreliable narrator, the overarching plot is based on misunderstanding after misunderstanding.... more>> If it was the real world with real, logical people, the story would have ended when the MC was 15 in the original timeline. I genuinely hate plots that end up dragging on for so long simply because the authors decided to remove the word 'communication' from their characters' vocabulary. At the very least, the author wrote it well so instead of leading to me dropping it, I read it through with frustration instead.

In terms of character development... it's there. A whole 150 some chapters for the MC to realize that actually, no, he doesn't just feel hate-lust for the ML, he actually loves him, and has somehow put all his love and effort on someone else instead. The author did a good job in fleshing out the characters so that we could sympathize with them and watch how they suffer but. I genuinely don't like any of the characters. The few that I didn't mind were so irrelevant to the plot they may as well have been Passerby A and B.
The way the author was writing this story honestly made it feel like, oh yeah these people have terrible, horrible and violent personalities, but it's ok!!! It's okay because they actually only do all of that because they wanted to be loved and they didn't get that love. It honestly feels like abuse turns someone (MC) into a serial killing rapist, but it's fine because they're redeemable because all they want is love. And then you have the ML who treats others like shit, has anti-social skills, and beats the sh*t out of people at the slightest infraction. But it's fine for him to be that way because actually he's only like that because he's never had anyone to lean on before all he needs is to be shown the power of love!!!!
Spoiler

The ML gave 15yo MC a whipping of 40 strikes because MC picked a flower that he wanted to give to ML to show his admiration. And MC couldn't communicate that because, , , there's no such thing as communication!!!

[collapse]
Even through the very very long 'redemption' as the MC changes from a serial killing rapist to someone who knows what consent means, you don't see him regret his actions for any other reason than: 'I hurt the one I love before.' There's no regret for doing the wrong thing or hurting innocents or being a tyrannical dictator who killed his way to the top. The only basis for his regret is because those actions just happened to harm his ML.
TL;DR long story short, this story is honestly beautifully written but left me feeling as if the whole plot was utterly pointless and that MC was the one who got a second chance in life simply because he happened to be the MC and not because he deserved it. <<less

Damn... Took me some time to come here but ok...

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who thought that the story was problematic. Cuz like look at the amount of 5-star reviews! Gosh, you'd think this is some masterpiece! Let me tell you... the writing style? Fantastic ok? very poetic and beautiful. The world-building and plot twists? Magnificent. but the MC? Yeah no.

Listen, the first problematic thing is that the MC is a rapist. Read all the tags yes but like... STILL! Why the f*ck does Chu Wanning... more>> still put up with Taxian-Jun? Like WHY? Not only that! He still ends up with the 2 versions of Mo Ran! Truly shows that a victim can never escape his/her/their abuser. I didn't expect this from a novel that got a 4.4 on novel updates. And I think I know why.

We see the whooooole story from the pov of Mo Ran, so as we learn the truth with him we realize 'Oh! Poor BaBy He diDiN't MeaN to do it AfteR AlL! He WaS TriCkEd!' Um.......... Yeah no. If we flip the story from Mo Ran's pov to Chu Wanning's y'all would be condemning Mo Ran and trying to get him killed. Don't believe me?

I had finished a story about the same topic, the glorification of r*pe relationships and toxic relationships and these are the similarities:

  1. The Gongs abused and r*ped the shous.
  2. The Gongs liked another person but used the Shou's body because they don't want to 'dirty' their true lover.
  3. The gongs imprisoned the shous and are directly responsible for their death.
  4. When the gongs learn of the truth about their pure lover they feel BetRayEd.
  5. Both the shous still choose to be with the gong after ALL of THIS!
The only difference? In the first book, the Shou was the one who travelled back in time and in 2ha, it was the MC. In the first book, we see the story from the Shou's point of view so we see the pain they have been through and since we don't see much from the Gong's pov we hate him and want him dead. But because the Pov is from Mo Ran, we sympathize with him.

And then we get the worst redemption, Meatbun literally made my precious She Mei.... sweet sweet She Mei a VILLAN! How could you! 'Oh! BecaUsE Shi Mei plaNteD the EviL flOweR in Mo Ran's HeArT, He becAMe all EvIL'. I'm sitting here and eating my fist! QAQ.

Come ON! I didn't expect this from 2ha! I heard so much praise about it! I truly expected it to be a masterpiece. Honestly? When I thought the book wasn't as good as people claimed it to be, I thought something was wrong with me. So I came on novel updates to check what people were saying and would you see that! A lot of people have the same thoughts as me! All in all, I have nothing against those who liked the book, that's y'all's business. Good for y'all sweethearts but I....... No. Just no. There are actual cute scenes and all but the whole glorification of r*pe just cuts it off for me lol.

Anyway have a good time readers! <<less

This review is mainly here to give new readers something to think about before starting to or reconsidering reading this novel. IT INVOLVES BRIEF SPOILERS AND DISCUSSIONS OF EROTICIZATION OF ASSAULT.

I'm going with a 3 star mostly because I wanted to leave a rating-less review which novelupdates doesn't allow (at least not on Android) so 3 star should be the neutral point. Its been a while since I last read this so all the details with place names aren't here.

I dnfed after having a late night conversation with myself as... more>> one often does while staring at their ceiling before sleep comes. This was the night I had gotten through the last bits of the first arc (when ML is in Shi Mei's body and trying to save MC) to when ML becomes a kid and their sect sends a delegation for training.

My mind kept circling back to what it felt like to read the banquet scene where
Spoiler

ML plays the guqin and MC thinks back to his former life where he ra/ped ML whilst forbidding him from playing the guqin in front of anyone else.

[collapse]
Up until this point it felt off to have to read about MC's entire angle of attraction towards ML being his 'natural' response after having had extensive sex/ual relations with him (which comprised solely of long term captivity and ra/pe) because it just felt revolting, but I could still reason that after every instance of feeling attraction (briefly stated) MC felt guilty about what he had done and confused about why he did so.

This scene completely threw me for the loop. I've consumed plenty of media where ra/pe is depicted but stumbled upon only a few where not only is the POV that of the ra/pist, but also the act itself has an angle of voyeuristic eroticism towards it. (The other times being some BL manga, which back when I first happened upon them had ra/pe as romance as such a prevalent trend that I actively avoiding BL manga/manhwa until quite recently). My ears rang from the sheer sense of dissociation I felt while reading SA as committed and enjoyed by the rap1st. Going in, I knew the SA tag was present, but I didn't think it would form a central basis of attraction and tension between the MC and ML in the earlier stages.

It was also extremely weird that ML (beidou immortal btw, somewhere in his late 20s acc character details)
Spoiler

fell in love with MC (then 15) at first sight because he complimented him (????) it was almost funny how he went from 0 to 100 fantasizing about MC accompanying him in his life as someone who understands and loves him equally. Most people say this is alright bc ML didn't understand s*xual attraction so his love was 'pure', and that in the second life MC is a 25 y/o in the body of a 15 y/o anyway (this happens 6 months after their first meeting), but still, the fact that ML first fell in love with a 15 y/o kid remains unchanged.

[collapse]

I know my review is all over the place, but even though I was new to danmei back then, being a seasoned reader here's a few things I could extrapolate would happen given what I had read (of the novel) so far:

Spoiler
    • shi mei (from og timeline) turns out to be the villain. This is because no way in he// are MC and ML getting together without the OG moonlight being vilified in some way. This is done to eliminate any feeling of romantic attraction or tenderness that MC had harbored for him (coupled with his apparent growing love for ML).
    • The gratuitous descriptions of ra/pe flashbacks and the subsequent single sentence of MC feeling guilty about it would persist. Saying the character feels sorry for being a rap/ist after writing an eroticized description of said ra/pe would continue feeling insidious.
    • MC would be put through immense trials to earn his right to love and care for ML given the kind of sh/it he put him through in the first timeline by way of painful plot. (For some reason it gave me the mental image of a person walking their way back into hell barefoot over searing coals to taste even a glimpse of redemption).
    • Given ML's character, after finding out about what happened in the first timeline (this will surely happen) he'll blame himself for getting serially ra/ped by MC. Reading this would seriously mess up my mind.
    • Readers will be made to doubt if the confinement and ra/pe was that bad when *shock* ML is revealed to have still been in love with MC through the entirety of captivity.
[collapse]

Reading through reviews here that don't prima facie proclaim 2ha as one of the best novels they've read pretty much confirmed that most of this would happen.

This is not to raise questions about meatbun as a person or writer. I actually quiet admired her recent BAB author note that my friends (they're huge fans, and the reason I picked this up in the first place) rt-ed wherein she talks about being a writer who writes niche stories that she herself would like to read, and her gratefulness towards the readers who've come to enjoy her work and give her so much love. I'm not a fan of her main CPs (both here and BAB), but I will give credit to how intricate she made the details of every bit of this novel, at least as far as I've read it. She emphasizes understanding and wants you to soak up both the atmosphere of her scenic setting and her characters' emotions. Eg. Even though I found ML's love for MC confounding, I still cried when he was trying to save MC in Shi Mei's body. It felt Rough. I'm sure the emotional/painful highs of the rest of the novel remained just as well written, and that alone is in itself commendable.

The translation work is great too, and suika and rynn have done their best to be concise not only about footnotes but also trigger warnings.

This is no fault of either, its just that knowing something triggering happens vs the tone in which said event is depicted wildly changes both reader experience and subsequent evaluation of a novel.

Eroticizing ra/pe is just a hardline for me, and I'll dissuade any person who wants to give this novel a read from doing so if that is the case for them too. <<less

I tried to like this bc I was art-baited into reading it but I have several issues with it.

I'll start with the good things to be fair. There are many enjoyable and genuinely funny scenes. The silly romantic tropes like tripping into an embrace and such are written well. The descriptions of food, scents, and textures make it an immersive read. A couple of the twists are interesting, even if they are predictable. The MC's uncle is funny. Ok, I think that's it.

I agree with other reviews on the romanticizing... more>> of abuse, so I won't expand on that except to say it leaves a sour note on any romantic or cute scene. I can read heavy stuff, but it felt like the author's intention missed the mark here and the MC isn't sympathetic or redeemed at all.

I don't personally enjoy the narration style, it can get quite repetitive and I ended up skimming paragraphs because the protag and ML are only capable of 3 thoughts max apparently. Once the motivations and personalities are established, why explain those same thoughts over and over?? I found that somewhat frustrating and I don't think I'll be looking into other works by this author, it's just not for me.

Overall, it was interesting enough to read 149 chapters but I know that as soon as I put it down, I'll stop caring and never read it again. Interesting idea, bad execution 2.5/5 <<less

I low key regretted reading this.

I am so in love with the characters, the plot, and everything but the translation isn't finished yet and I have to wait. T_T

I don't really want to read raws since the translation here is so good.

I am dying to read all chapters in one go. Maybe I should blame myself for not learning chinese since young despise being chinese....

I didn't get very far in the novel because I was turned off by what I read so far.
Spoiler

The MC was so promiscuous! In his past life he had many lovers/concubines even though he thought he was in love with his senior brother Shi Mei. So I said ok, it was the past. I could still deal with that. Then he is reborn and finds himself sleeping next to a prostitute that he used to favor, knows from past experience that the male prostitute betrayed him but he still ends up sleeping with that male prostitute the same day he is reborn to punish the prostitute?! Yuck.

*insert Captain Holt: PAAAAAAAAAAINNNNNNNNNNN*-gif

I saw someone on Twitter say 2Ha is Bing-Ge being reborn, only to realize his Shizun was Shen Yuan all along, and they were right.

Angst galore, but oh so worth it. Sensitive topics and lots of trigger warnings, please be careful!

What I especially liked is the way those topics and situations were handled. You see the consequences and emotional distress every action causes; r*pe and torture is never made fun or light of or used solely as a plot device or shock factor --> insert "when will... more>> you people realize choices have c oNSEqUEnCES"-vine

In my humble opinion, Meatbun is one of the best authors there is. She has such control over the language, it all flows so well. The TL is amazing, you really feel what the author wanted to say even though it's not in the original language. <<less

Here's the deal.

Some people in these reviews read part of the story and think that this is a book about the main character, who is a rapist/mu*derer psychopath in his past life, getting a redemption in another life and all is good.

... more>> I thought so too. And when I read negative reviews I thought I was confirming my impression of this book. I was so confused as to why people would enjoy this story so much.

But then I read it. The whole thing. Not just part of it. Not just half of it. The entire thing.

To new readers reading the reviews, please, don't be so quick to judge. There's so much going on and so much to uncover. It's not what you think. Some parts of the book were rough and the tags ring true (content warnings will be in certain chaps), but once you reach the climax of it all, learn everything you need to know, the puzzle pieces all come together.

The story is not perfect so I will say one thing:
Spoiler

Txj is a really complex character. I think one of the points of his character is whether or not you would forgive someone like txj, which is debatable (and really there's no right or wrong answer. The readers are meant to form their different opinions of him based on their own morals) So just going off of what I think of him, even if txj was manipulated by that curse that made him do the things he did, I still have a hard time liking him. The way things turned out of hand was just irredeemable in my opinion. I can tell the author tried to make him more likable because he tried to protect cwn in the end and lost all of his good memories of him, but I can't just brush over the things he did. I did feel sorry for him though after learning the truth about everything but that's about it. The ending kinda made me feel a certain type of way with him sticking around but he treats cwn better, so I wasn't too mad.

[collapse]

The author did really well in capturing the feelings of each character. The theme caught me off guard with the overall question of morality, justice, and forgiveness (which led me deep in thought sometimes and made the plot much more intriguing to read) The romance between the two MLs is really sincere as well. My perception changed about the story so much. I NEVER thought I could read something like this, but I did and I enjoyed it. Give this WHOLE story a chance and form your own opinion. <<less
