With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

Slow-paced, story inspired by SCP fiction and other similar SCP fan-fiction with Cthulhu elements. Watch how the protagonist survives in the mysterious dangerous world with some cheat abilities in the future. The satisfying thing is MC pretending to be a god and creating a secret society like a mastermind to gather information to unravel the mysteries of the world

Just finished reading it and will wait for book 2 to get more chapters before starting it.....

Really slow start that it might make you think it is a slice of life novel but at the end of Tingen arc it will seriously start. The world building and mysticism background is well done....

OOOF, I didn't know anything about this novel at first and thought it was completed. I didn't realize that it was a part of the series and only considered it the first book of a trilogy XD. REGARDLESS, it's a really good read for those who love worldbuilding. The author is really intense about it. So much so that a lot of the novel is comprised of lengthy analyses of all the different elements that make up the universe that it created. I liked the novel a lot because of... more>> this aspect, but I understand that some people may not feel the same because it can get a bit boring at times. AHH, anyway, let's move on to the rest of the review, starting with...

Summary: The novel starts off like your typical transmigration novel. The MC is your typical, ordinary man that ended up mysteriously traveling through time and space, only to occupy another person's body. The person in question is called, Klein Moretti, and the MC takes on his identity from then on, as well as the burden that came with it. This burden comes in the form of the original owner's mysterious death and the equally mysterious foggy realm that connects him with other people across this new world. It should be noted that this world is kind of steampunk in style, with lots of western fantasy elements. More specifically, here, there are ordinary people and then there are people who have mystical powers that can be said to have been inherited from the Gods. By ingesting a corresponding potion sequence, one can gain great strength. BUT, it comes at the cost of risking one's sanity.

Altogether, it's a very complex world with great characters and a wonderfully rich setting. Worth reading for both of these things! Though, it's definitely not your typical read. The novel definitely has its shortcomings, and I feel really complicated about the end of Book 1. It was definitely a bit rushed and I became more and more disinterred of the MC as a character (let's just say that it's very hard to sympathize with his experience). HOWEVER, knowing that this is not the end, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about the novel regardless. I won't be writing a full review because I don't think this novel can be rated based on my usual criteria. BUT, according to personal enjoyment, I think this novel deserves a 5 star rating. Though the official score would probably be around 4.5 - 4.75 stars XD. <<less

I will never understand, how reviewers give 5 star to a review when they point out flaws and negative aspects in it. like Pros and Cons, the good and bad, etc... HOW??!! (my wife loves me, she cheats on me, but she is a 10/10)

Sadly is a concurrent aspect of the reviewers in this place, which I hardly I take seriously, in fact I believe more in these who give score of 3 and under.

Anyways on to review, after fully reading the (incomplete) completed Serie, all I can... more>> say is :

OVERRATED!

Long Review:

Spoiler

It was recommendation from some people when I was reading Reverent Insanity, that LOM was as good, HOW DARE YOU!

Premise: As usual as many Chinese books, this fall in the sin of the author wanting to expand and enlarge the plot with massive over explanation and extra unnecessary text to bloat the chapters, luring the readers at the beginning with interest premise and good thinking MC, et. etc. then half way start the world counting spam of unnecessary things.

Author creates too many characters and all of them as important as MC take plenty of screen time, there is a moment where you rarely read about MC, but other people you don't want since you care only for MC.

MC: As usual in Chinese media, sexuality interest coming from a MC is censored, I mean... MC reject to act like a normal Modern Age Male Human Being for the same of (ZMGWTF) plot and he decides to no get into any kind of romance. We are talking here about a Modern ear Man with Modern era knowledge, these kind of thinking always makes me baffle, why create a transmigrated MC from modern earth (years 2010+) and make him act like those nice boyscout goodie 2 shoes from the 1980s.

About abilities: they are interesting, 22 pathways of power that takes 10 levels with potions and ingredient, yes author describe all the recipes on screen, s*upid info dump that you will forget as soon you cross to the next chapter. In the end a mess to remember every pathway and what does every level do, you will remember those from MC and the other inner circle Characters. but whatever the important thing is power goes from 9 to 0, the lower the number the stronger the guy, this is what you must remember, anything else is SPAM.

Plot: not bad at the beginning, with MC being secretive and using his Deux EX power up to help him in the early stages, later he decides to become more active, and way later he becomes the target of almost everyone. I was WTF?! where is the strategist cautious and brilliant MC that started the book? Author takes thing Around of board without much of common sense, just for the sake of chapters, even when:

Spoiler

MC abandon his family for "protecting them" from his enemies, author continue to write about them, even when MC never cared to return to them

[collapse]

This is what the author does the most, move the focus to other characters POV, which is most cases didn't add to the plot or worldbuilding, just filler chapters of Mr. XX doing Super Y things.

Characters: They are good, everyone of them, here you wont see bad written characters, and that is very good specially in these kind of media, the problem is that they are too many, and take too much screen time. If you are of those who link yourself to MC, you will be desperate to get over these ppl's POV and skim the text until MC is back on camera.

Overall: The last arc was the worst, I can say the last 3 but anyways... The ending was rushed and incomplete, most likely waiting for another book that may or may NOT come in a future.

[collapse]

TLDR:

Not a bad read if you want a change of pace from cultivation stuff, yet falls to the same predicament as those, still the plot is interesting if you can bear with it, is a good Novel to recommend.

Still taking 1 Point off from the convoluted mess of the bloating of chapters, and another 1 point from the incomplete closure.

WTF just because you write The END at the end doesn't mean your job is done! <<less

Fun read just never expected the book to be a trilogy and end like that some problems I have with this book is that the side characters aren't really paid attention to. It's like they are there but their presence are really lost on the book other than that the side characters are really interesting despite their lost presence.

Barely readable, feels like each scene are dragged on for far too long that you have no idea what's even happening, I could not even comprehend how people read or endured this pure drivel.

The start of this novel is really slow, like snail pace with a lot of fillers. I only started to enjoy after reaching chapters 100. Even after that, I still found a lot of fillers and dump infos. I skipped those parts, and it actually didn't affect my reading experience.

The plot is amazing, and the world building is supperb. I love the characters. And the story can move my emotion. Although some organization naming sense is a bit unsophisticated, and it caused me to re-read to understand and not confuse... more>> which one is which. For example : Earth mother & mother goddess of origin & mother tree of desire & mother goddes of depravity, rose school of thought & life school of thought, oldest one & primordial one & great old one, original creator & true creator & second creator. I need to re-read those parts to understand.

I like how author shows a smart character from their actions & speech, not from the narration by author.
Every character got a clear character development. And I love their interaction.

Most importantly I love how there's no romance!

If only those fillers are deleted, then I'll give perfect score for this novel. I'm waiting for the second book! <<less

Note: It's 4.5 stars, not 5. So I just rounded it up. Only finished main story not the extras. I'll take notes of the bad side first before telling the good sides of it.

Well, the only thing I could say about its bad side was the information overload at the first chapters of this story. When I first read it, I was like, "What's happening?"

I couldn't keep up!

There were unfamiliar terms in here and there without succinct explanations. I was thrown inside a world where they talk about beyonders, potions... more>> then organizations, churches and gods. Who is who, and what is what? It was like giving a child a medical book, and I had to learn it by myself through instances and experience. It was also like the author chopped all his ingredients, put it on a single plate, and then mistakenly put it all in the pot in one go.

I got accustomed to it as the chapters passed by, but I still think that it was a wrong choice to throw all the information at once in just one accident in the story. It wasn't introducing the setting at all, but just making the reader forcefully adapt to the environment in the book.

But overall, I like the story. The scenes were detailed, and I could imagine it. Also, the points in where I could feel how lonely the MC was despite being strong. The times when I could feel his human sides and not just his godly sides as the MC. It wasn't just about the adventures, but also the experiences and emotions were there.

As for the ending, I didn't like how it ended. At that time, it was as if I was the one who was hanged like a marionette, unable to move without the author's will to give me more info as to what happens next to the story. LOL. In simple terms, it didn't feel like an ending! But then I read that there would be a book 2, so okay, fine. That's the reason, I guess, why it kept me hanging. I was relieved until I realized that now I have to experience the torture of waiting for the subsequent book. <<less

Most unique cultivation system (not an actual system), mind games play a huge role, exceptional character development. Albeit a slow start and a mediocre ending it is an entrancing story that grips you at the edge of your seat until the very end.

It's alright, the tense moments and plot twists are nice and thrilling. Looking forward to the next part of the trilogy. It's probably near the level of Warlock of magus world, if it the trilogy was finished, it would definitely be equal to, or higher than Womw. It focuses a lot on climbing the power levels (basically cultivation but in a different way), so people that don't like wuxias or the like, have a low chance of enjoying this, but nevertheless, please read the first 10 chapters if you have... more>> the time, and are willing. <<less

I was really looking for a good novel after some big disappointments and I saw like many of them recommend this novel as one of the best. So I gave a reading and needless to say I was not disappointed at all. I did have some doubts untill he bacame Sherlock but the story picked up once after that. Even the first 200 chapter is only slow in pace but story wise it definitely doesn't lack anything. Personally for me it's not the best novel as there were many dragging... more>> moments but it's better than most of the novels I read. The world building is unbelievable. Each character is written good and to be frank I was completely shocked that this was a Chinese novel. Because it doesn't look like one at all.. There were some disappointing endings to some character hanging in the middle. And the story Starts to drag as the war starts but still it was good. I'm waiting for the second volume so I'll finish once the author completes the second one. Definitely this one is top in my reading list but not the first place. And the character German Shepard is the best badass character that I've read till now. The German shepherd arc is absolutely fantabulous. <<less

Only negatives are long fights and somewhat slow pace. I found myself often skimming through the fights in the latter half of the novel. They take so long and are frustrating, at least to me. I feel like there are too many escape abilities. Person 1 attacks but Person 2 somehow escapes the attack, and the same thing continues over and over again, for the entire chapter. As for the slow pace, the first volume suffers form it the most but since there's so much new stuff in it I... more>> wasn't bothered all that much by the slow pace. <<less

As far as Chinese Webnovels go, this is very close to Western Urban Fantasy. It gives me serious Mistborn vibes. Very sophisticated and detailed magic system, entertaining fights. Some serious plot armor, deus ex machina aside, MC is not too unreasonably overpowered. All in all it's not perfect perfect (there are plotholes the size of barn doors) but no webnovel ever is, so I won't make a long list of bad things. All webnovels have inherent weaknesses, this one is a page turner.

Finally finished this novel. It was a great... more>> ride. Unfortunately it crash and burn at the end. Basically it went from interesting plots and challenges to reach the next cultivation level, to jumping from one cultivation level to next with no other plots, and finally ending in the most unsatisfying way.

It seems that the framework the author set up was too large, and couldn't be filled. Quality goes downhill at 85% mark, novel "ends" at 95% mark and last 5% is an out-of-world filler which is not worth reading anymore. <<less

I hate this novel because it is so good.

It made me not enjoy other cn novesl knowing there is a cn novel gem such as this.

However, the story does have it flaws such as sometimes it gets tedious because it repeat some stuffs like naruto flashbacks. But then again, is there a cn novel that don't do this shit?

Besides the best arc is when captain sparrow appears. Best character ever.

This is the best novel I had ever read. The plot is really good. I dropped first time I read it but I checked it later and man I really am fortunate for checking this out. First 100 chapters might feel boring but do stick with it trust me you will not regret for sticking with it

The story starts as a typical isekai where MC get transferred to a mysterious world then he finds original owner of the body dead then he started living as the poor history university graduate.... more>> The real reason he died, why did he end up here, is it the same earth, how did mysterious ability works

His motivation for being alive is to go back to earth

There is no romances, no cheat, MC had to work very hard for everything

MC is intelligent, cunning

The side characters (#enemy_included) are no fools they are also intelligent and cunning

MC has to give up many things to earn something from experienced cunning intelligent enemies

There are no obvious plot holes trust me and try reading this if this felt like sh*t to u than maximum novel will be worse than shit <<less

Well, I very much enjoyed this novel. It has a unique plot line and characters in it. I would like to say this novel has a far better scope, then other novels, but what it lacks a family attachment and romance sub-plot. Some people would say the lack of romance and family driven this novel to the peak, but, I like to didn't think so. The story kept on going like a machine. It needs some family ties, some romance, some personal interaction. That's the thing I missed in the... more>> novel. <<less

Its been a few days since I've read this to process it.

Spoilers: None.

I will start off my disclosing that I have read this novel like I proof read any articles I write. I usually skim over all the various expositions of the complex relations between gods. A single acts' trickle down effects are discussed for several paras. This gets really tedious and does not really add much to the progress of character development or moving the story along. What it does is foreshadow something or if you actually read the... more>> details, let you really appreciate the moments of brilliance for about 10% more. This for me is a Con but for others such tedious details might be a Pro.

What really sets this novel apart is also the details I have discussed above. There are no plot holes or shock (sudden surprise) elements. When the hero as expected eventually beats his opponents, its not because he pulled plot armor out of his ass but because he (and you) put in the effort building the circumstances that give the results. You grow with the character, thus when he gets a new power, the reader could realistically imagine new synergies. That is well thought out world building.

Zero romance which is fine by me.

When I learnt that 1400 chapters were just book 1 and there were 2 more to follow I was surprised. Im ambivalent at the purported length of the series. It might reach Wheel of Time series or Malazan Series before its done but without half the depth of either. <<less

How do I say this...

I have completed the novel the moment the original one is completed (I'm genuinely invested in this that I follow the daily update of the raw back then). The two last volumes suck out my enjoyment.

You can read others reviews about the premise etc, they have written it in details. I'll just say that tbh the first/second volume is kinda... Meh. The third/fourth/fifth is my enjoyment (and the one that made me invested). The sixth/seventh/eighth is just... Yeah.

I really really want to complain that because the... more>> author unnecessary long ass filler in the early volumes, the moment he shifts to accelerating the plot, man it's painful. The accelerating happen in Volume 6/7/8 but it's really obvious in the 7/8 volumes. It's like you're driving in a car with someone with 20 kmh and then they suddenly accelerated to 100 kmh for no reason and boy they didn't stop at all but go through it till the end (where we crash and burn).

It really leave a bad taste to me that I have to stop associating with this novel from the end (april) to now (september). If he didn't spend so much time with the unnecessary filler at the beginning, we won't be used to that kind of pace (which still nope) and we won't have to feel like the ending just boom. Lmao.

I still enjoyed this, so 4/5 but yeah. Complain is there man. <<less

It's pretty good. It's basically a Chinese Wuxia novel with cultivation and power creep but it isn't handled in some random or arbitrary way. The author always establishes stuff ahead of time or gives fairly reasonable justification for power ups. It's not like, for example, "Oh, I just remembered about this tunnel that leads into a totally different dimension and there's this new power called Laws that I never mentioned until now."

Besides that, the characters are well written for the most part and there are some legitimately suspenseful moments.

My biggest... more>> criticism is that it feels repetitive. It's something you come to expect when reading a very lengthy CN novel but I'm in the middle of volume 3 and I feel burnt out. I hear volume 4 is better but we'll see. <<less
