My review of this novel is much like ninthlite. I feel like so many of the MC's choices, and actions are based on this being a harem. So much time is spent on the MC 'inadvertently' wooing some beauty who is much stronger than himself that the story feels like it's dragging.

The world building and empire aspects of the novel are fairly decent/good but I don't know if the "fairly large harem" as Mibuokami calls it will ruin it for the rest as you as it has started to for... more>> me.

I can't recommend this since I think I have a good feel for the story and will probably drop it, but I'm sure someone won't mind the problems I had with it. <<less

Absolutely a brilliant novel, the focus on strategy was particularly refreshing although he does gain a "cheat" ability later on. The fact that he's not the most powerful, most talented etc is extremely nice and for once we have a non-arrogant MC. He keeps his cool at all times and only reacts when compelled or necessary, he does take some arbitrary actions but that's solely to drive the plot.

Highly recommend this novel.

Very unique take on the whole xianxia-theme novel. It is very interesting and the MC is extremely intelligent and hardworking. I hope the novel gets more attention. Read all the chapter in 1 day and had to sleep around 7 am xD!

Actually it's maybe one of the few Xianxia that I'm following closely. It's not your generic Xianxia Novel, here the MC uses his brain and his wits to solve the situations.

There are no clichés development such as dying full of hate and being reborn to cultivate to the peak etc... It's just plainly and simply a good Action/Adventure Novel, where the characters are likeable and lovely. I really like Tianling and her childlike behavior, Zhong Shan is hardworking and the chapters are quite funny to read. There is no... more>> overbearing world building, the author doesn't especially try to explain everything, he just gives enough information as to draw the general scenery without getting boring, he focuses mainly on the characters. It's a light and fun read, as of chapter 26, I can, confidently say this Novel deserves more attention (I just hope the story doesn't go into a generic Harem Xianxia after a hundred chapters or so, I'd hate to see this. If possible I'd like to read a 1v1 Monogamy story or at least not dozens of girls falling for the MC for s*upid reasons such as him saving beauties when they are in trouble.) <<less

I finally finished this!

There is no great translation for this story, but I managed to find an acceptable one. (The lack of a really solid translation is arguably the novel's biggest flaw for English readers, honestly...)

I really liked how it concluded and will try to find translations to Guan Qi's other works now, haha...

Zhong Shan is an extremely intelligent person and starts the story as an old man without a high cultivation. It's a refreshing change from the brash, emotional youngster stereotype that so many stories have (and considering... more>> it's about cultivating to reach immortality, it really isn't a youngster's story, now is it?).

Initially, he must really on strategies and some luck to make his way, but, as any intelligent person should do, he expands his circle of influence and this becomes an empire-building story.

In fact, that's one of the intriguing parts of the story, that there are different methods of cultivation and becoming an emperor is one of them.

There are a number of notable beautiful women in the story and he ends up with nearly all of them who aren't already taken. (Personally, I quite like this.)

I don't think a single notable character gets forgotten by the end of the story, which is quite surprising for a lengthy xianxia novel.

There are very few serious annoyances with the story that I had...

Spoiler

Some powers/divine beasts are too samey and repetitive, referring to copying/stealing/imitating.

Brother Fatty and Beanpole were actively painful for me to read about a lot of the time. I found them almost offensive in context.

[collapse]

All-in-all, this is one of my highest-rated cultivation novels of all time and I'd absolutely recommend it.

One final thing, the title of this story should not be Immortal, but Immortality. <<less

I HATE this novel.

Do you know what urge I had after reading the first 50 chapter? It was to get rid of that brainless baggage of another walking g**italia that is Tian Linling, I hoped the author would somehow make her disappear. It was annoying to read about her. Even teenagers in modern world would be slapped across the room for such brainless behavior, much less in a cultivation world, no matter how sheltered one can be.

I should probably check these tags more, I neglected the harem tag in hope... more>> that it would only be briefly mentioned in the epilogue or something. <<less

I have read more than 20 light novels. This is the first time am writing a review.

Don't miss it

Read completely many short openings and downsides will converge to a satisfied climax

One or two Arc may be dull or bored but rest will compensate it.

Harems role will be played till the end

Best novel so far with action romance and >80% logic

My favorite novel that will most likely never be completely translated. I consider this the best novel by this author and can only hope one day someone will pick it up who is not using MTL again!

It has to be the best xanxia that balances cultivation and politics while not getting stale like novels by Mao Ni.

Immortal is a very good novel and deserves a lot more attention.

Immortal, like many (almost all of them) is about a person who wants to reach the peak of cultivation and become immortal. Along the way he meets friends and enemies. Lovers and rivals. Unlike many novels characters are quite fleshed out. MC is smart and calm and actually acts his age. Just these 2 things put this novel in the upper 5% of novels in my opinion. Cultivation is somewhat lacking (same Houtian--Xiantian--> Golden Core etc) however that's fine... more>> by me. Biggest problem for most readers will be that the translation has stopped which is real same, hope it resumes. Gravity Tales is translating other novels from the same author (i'll have to check them out) so hopefully this one gets resumed. I'd say give this novel a chance, just reading the first volume (36 chaps) will give you an inclination if you will enjoy it. If enough people read it odds are that they will resume translating. All in all a great novel that gets 8/10 (to short to give it higher) but I am rating it 5 starts in hope that it gets more attention.

If you want more like this I'd recommend Transcending the Nine Heavens or The World Online <<less

A fairly good novel for a xianxia (cultivation novel). Unfortunately, this is by comparison to other CN novels, hence my rating is low compared to my first sentence lol.

The plot is good. I won't go into details to avoid spoilers, but it's an unusual take on the road to immortality, and it's well executed. Mostly well. There are plenty of small twists and things you wouldn't expect too.

The setting is okay. It doesn't blow your mind, and it's the usual CN novel exaggeration stuff with giant lands and whatnot (and... more>> of course small place -> so-so place -> big place -> bigger realm -> and so on principle applies). What I don't like is that author forgets some things, for example

Spoiler

MC introduces a lot of stuff at the beginning, such as an underground train, but then it soon stopped being relevant, and it was never mentioned anymore.

[collapse]

On the other hand, the power system is nicely done: there are quite a few options for people in the story to choose from, and a few of them feel a bit unique.

The protagonist is quite good. We have an unusual one: an old man whose time is about to run out, yet he's still trying to break through and gain a longer lifespan. He isn't a loner nor an unexperienced youngster, but a wise and experienced clan leader. He has a lot of wise or sneaky tactics and tricks, so you won't get bored when he makes plans and so on. At the same time, he's also bold, so there's no p**syfooting, and he often plays big.

The harem is of course present as can be seen from the tags. All love interests are unique, and it often takes a really long time until they get together with MC. The downside is that while they're unique, they're not exactly 3d characters, either, and they don't have much "screen time". They get 2-3 arcs at most, and while some of them accompany MC after becoming his wives, they are barely shown or not at all. The author especially spends less effort on them in the later part of the story. Fortunately, at least the way they got together with MC was nicely written, there were no bullsh*t reasons or asspulls here, so thumbs-up from me (most CN novels don't bother with such things after all). The protagonist doesn't salivate at every woman and exercises restraint like someone of his status should be able to, yet he doesn't waste time after he decides to accept a love interest, either, so bonus Chad points for him.

Other characters are quite not bad. There are generals, retainers, friends, enemies. They have their circumstances and backstories. Still, they could be explored more, and once they become MC's subordinates (if they do, coz not all did), they aren't shown much on personal level (they only appear in fights or when making plans), so this is a big shortcoming. Sometimes I feel enemies are shown more than them after 1000-1100 chapters.

Overall, it's a good novel... for a Chinese webnovel, that is. It also gets worse with time as they all do, but belongs to the rarer category of those that take more time to become worse. Where I read to (and there's like 200 chapters left), the quality is still okay. Sadly, the author doesn't put as much effort into setting and characters anymore (except perhaps for the newly introduced ones), and while the novel is still okay, the current events are not nearly as interesting as the ones from the first 1000 chapters, which is why I am a bit bored of this novel, and won't read it anymore (at least not for the time being). <<less

The MC is so protected by plot armor that nothing else matter. World building is good, which is a big waste as it will be destroyed by nonsensical MC plot armor.

It was good till here. Translation still needs some more work. And story wise its kinda nice different from all the other generic kingdom building. Romance is still novice stage. He concurred a girl but she git injured and forgot about him where as his 1st or 3nd wife was mu*dered by some prince and another wife left him to train in medicine concutting or something. MC is kinda dumb for transmigrated man from earth which he could use a lot of his knowledge except for that one time he... more>> used fingerprints in that little wolf story arc. But if you ask me is it good? Then I say its good and I recommend it. It is not the best one but is better than some novice writer writing sh*t and combining each and every other cultivation novel in one place. <<less

Great novel unlike any out there. Character development from main to supporting cast are given enough time to play their role properly. The main character is fleshed out appropriately without blatant bi-polar disorders and power ups. So if you prefer a mature novel devoid of whiny teenage outbursts, this novel is for you. The first volume (book) is a nice intro to give you a feel for deciding.

I found a decent (but not great) translation, which felt like a lightly-edited MTL. It's a good cultivation novels. I am not a huge fan of complex political games with multiple parties all scheming, but it did spend quite a bit of time on the main character becoming stronger.

Things I liked: focus on cultivation and becoming stronger. The women (it's a harem) are fairly distinctive and play a role even towards the end when the MC is very strong. A reasonably intelligent MC.

What I didn't like:

... more>> Continuous references to Investiture of the Gods, but luckily it didn't try to stick too close to its plot.

The MC nearly always knows what to do and is utterly convinced of his destiny. I like intelligent MCs with minimum angst, but it would be nice to have occasional soul-searching, self-deprecation, or humor, to make achievements more satisfying.

Xianxia physics. Generally, I accept ludicrous numbers and superficial (to be kind) grasp of physics, so was not a huge problem to just ignore that.

Spoiler

At a certain point, what seemed to be a zero-sum game to achieve the next (highest?) step. Only one person in the world could win, so all other had to perish. I prefer cultivation stories where the cultivator achieves strength by his own efforts, not by robbing others of their strength.

[collapse]

The fairly central concepts of luck, fate, destiny, were a bit murky to me. Again, I prefer cultivators to progress through their own effort, not by "seizing luck". <<less

At the beginning there was an interesting romance, but the further the story went, the worse it got. As a result, it turned into a typical short story about a s*upid protagonist who is always lucky. He, even if he goes to the toilet, will find some treasure :)

Apparently, among the Chinese harem novels, there is nothing better than "Keyboard Immortal" and "Flower Stealing Master".

The novel starts our great, with a very unique premise and was well written and translated.

The story progresses pretty well, much better than most chinese novels, but quickly devolves into a bit of a plot armor mess. Despite that (and some annoying side characters) it was a pretty good read. That was until LotusTL took over the translation. TL quality dropped severally, and I had to drop it after trying about 10 or so chapters done by LotusTL. If you want my advice, do not bother reading past the second... more>> volume. <<less
