“It’s finally here,” the man with the sword said in an echoing whisper.

“The Tower of Choice, the last floor!” the band of five exclaimed together in response.

Angelica came down from the altar, her expression drowsy as if she found it very annoying. Then, she looked us over.

“I’ll tell you again, but you’ve been working hard so far. Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to go up to the hundredth floor by myself”

[Dominating Touch (Rank: SSS, Active)] “All of you die.”

Thud!

One by one, they fall to the floor.

Angelica’s dagger pierced my neck, and I felt a roaring pain and darkness well up in front of my eyes. I was drifting away from my senses and from everything else. After that, I was engulfed by deep darkness.

This is an above average ‘tutorial tower’ and ‘levelling system’ novel. There is revenge from a sudden betrayal of a close teammate, but behind it is a much larger deadlier universe-wide conspiracy leading to their inevitable destruction. The plot will follow the protagonist as he gains power to fight against the overwhelming threats attempting to squash out any potential resistance. The end is both good and disappointing. He goes above and beyond at clearing out his immediate enemies. And then, it’s over. I just hoped for a few more after... more>> credits details.

Spoiler

Examples of what I would have liked to know at the end:

  • There is no romance, but there were clear hints that Hibiki had a crush on Mr. Seo. This affection turns to worship as the MC’s divinity grows. Does she decide to give up or to pursue him?
  • Does he restore the emotions of the original’s father now that he has the power to? Feels like him and other seed victims were forgotten about compared to the active Marcasius.
  • A glimpse of the original getting his happy ending would have been nice rather than the way he was seemingly discarded after being given a few blessings.
  • Wait, the senator wasn’t an awakened this entire time??? I suppose his talent does lie in politics and management. I wonder how the original gatekeeper guild leader felt when the successor he chose gave up power to another ageing old man like him. They should train someone from a young age. Maybe someone like the newly baked original Mr. Seo? He chose not to be an awakened and his subconscious might give him the management talent he needs.
  • The final original companion never appears even after a few years pass. I suppose he would naturally join the same guild as the main cast once he awakens considering Earth consolidates all guilds into Celestial Dragon, but he will never get the Devil’s sword this life. He feels so forgotten.
  • The MC getting called the new God of Mind is a bit cringe even to him. I’m shocked Secretary Kim didn’t decide to just title him ‘Celestial Dragon’. It’s the name of the guild that he raised. Celestial refers to his new status. Dragon would refer to his even more imminent status as the Successor of the Empire.

Honestly it makes sense for it to end the way it did, because it highlights the MC’s own disconnect from who he was before he spent countless years in isolated battle without break. He just became a little too detached and the things I started to care about through his character were suddenly no longer important. It’s hard to adapt to the change in mindset since it happens in the last few chapters.

[collapse]

Above was some changes I hoped from the story. Below will be some spoilers on the actual enemies and final ending. MAJOR spoilers.

Spoiler

The plot is deeply interweaved with the mythological lore of the story. The end reveals that there is a never ending battle between a force of creation and a force of destruction. This means that each universe has a certain lifecycle due to end from the inevitable invasion of the ‘Void’. The mythological age is the presumed beginning of this universe. Eight gods reigned during this period, until the Void’s invasion wiped out almost everything and exiled the gods before it retreated with it’s troops severely decimated.

Each god lost a piece of themselves that defined them upon exile. Both their power and memories slowly degraded over time, for all but the God of ‘Mind’ or ‘Spirit’. He already had no physical form, so he was directly driven mad when he suffered such mental damage. What remained of him somehow parasitised itself upon the Void Entity and became it’s agent.

The material world suffered just as much damage from the loss of the gods. The creatures there were apparently considered an extension of the diety itself, like cells. Not all of them could successfully develop into independent races and the ones that couldn’t died out. Eventually the races would come to form an impressive empire. Unfortunately, the threat of Mercasius went nearly undetected ushering in total defeat. They decide to send a soul to the past to fulfill various ‘destinies’ (ie missions) to change things enough to strengthen the empire enough to handle the final battle. They and the ‘successor’ both fail to account for the variables caused by the fall of the god of luck and the true danger of Mercasius.

The story starts after the MC has already experienced some twenty-three thousand odd reincarnations and just over a million regressions. This life is the first time he has been granted someone else’s body. It turns out that Mercasius’ pollution of the God of Luck gave our MC a body that would be completely unable to succeed at his mission even if he regressed twenty or even forty million more times. He could never fight against the power of prediction with only 10 mana. So the God of Time decided to shake things up a little by offering a deal for the original Mr. Seo to loan his body, at the price of being unable to regress again for this lifetime. He took the major risk of only having a single chance to give the only chance. MC is obviously unaware of the concerns and starts with only a strong desire to take down Angelica to protect the earth. Angelica turns out to be something called the ‘immortal’, a failed byproduct of Mercasius creating its unique skill. Finding her was actually harder than killing her this life and the constant threat of the SSS-level curse kept the MC moving forward to find the real target after it was confirmed Han-Seol was not the propagator. It wasn’t hard to figure out that his father was also under the curse, but he was actually the largest tragedy after you find out he was stripped of key emotions by Mercasius. He was essentially lobotomised and brainwashed into being a human tool. Granted, it was only possible due to a moment of weakness. He wanted to be stronger, but how much of that was actually the desire to protect his family? He became absolutely twisted once that familial affection was stripped away.

MC also has to fend off the advances of the mad gods who want to take his soul and body, even if by coercion. He is naturally unwilling to deal with them... at first. A series of events cause him to start generating and using divine power of his own. He also starts to absorb the power of each Mercasius turning him into a half-god. Rom, the god of life, advises him that further reincarnations leave him too weak to fight the void. He had only done so due to the diversity of needed changes and each races limited lifespan. Now his body and soul are now strong enough to handle a much longer eternity. Rom stops his ageing process so that he will no longer die of old age. MC decides to agree with Rom, especially once each deity starts to recover their sanity.

The biggest issue at the end is that Mercasius corrupted the system who has been culling races under its influence. The system would have been fine with endless isolated work without rest, but had developed emotions. It became frustrated and lonely despite its massive power, a perfect target and ally for Mercasius. MC will ‘save’ the system. I like that he apologizes to it and promises to not leave it alone for long periods of time again.

The ending is one of hope. The system is running properly now with Mind’s pollution cleared. Luck is no longer skewed for the worst outcome. Life will propagate even more strongly. Space is no longer shredded. Time has escaped the time loop. Magic has restored its eighth arm/leg. The Sword is no longer rusty. I’m forgetting a diety, but I think the author may have too..

Order of finding missing pieces as I recall:

  • Time (escapes in future, first)
  • Magic (first ‘black hole’)
  • Sword (second bh)
  • Luck (third bh)
  • Space (‘empty’ bh, revisited after the system)
  • Life (beach)
  • Mind (system red door)

Regardless, the end is full of hope. They will build a strong and diverse empire now without interference of the betrayer. Even the devils join the Union now that the system no longer tries to eradicate them. It gives the feeling that MC will fight another few million years without regret. He soberly realizes that the current group is far from strong enough.

Tbh I have a feeling that the empire is doomed to fall. The obvious way is once the void wins. What if the empire wins? Can they remain unified once there is no longer an external threat? A universe wide organization is almost doomed to have internal issues at that point, even without Mercasius. The presence of real interactable deities may keep them stable afterall? Tbh the lack of romance line is the best option for this kind of story. The current existence can’t afford for him to be too biased or distracted.

Passable. It starts off strong but becomes stale towards the middle but it's short enough that you can finish it easily. Similarly it's pacing starts off good, drags the middle out a bit too long then strangely the last arc felt incredibly rushed. If you don't think about it too hard it's perfectly fine as a time waster between releases of the main series you like. The next bit is a light spoiler about an issue with the series.

Spoiler

So basically the side character feel extremely useless. They're described early on as powerhouses and in this regression they're supposedly stronger and more mentally stable but often times they just feel pointless. It's a shame considering the hype but also it makes the time spent with them feel like a waste. The most extreme example is one companion is talked about for a while but in the end we never actually added him to the party. It's just a bit off putting because it makes the series feel like there was more planned out but the author got tired of it and just decided to quickly end the series. You can ignore it as it doesn't take away too much but it's annoying nonetheless.

Honestly, wasn't expecting much when reading this, but it's surprisingly enjoyable. Not a fan of human becomes god plot but this one is acceptable.

The world building was amazing. It's big and vast, yet everything is connected.

Each chapter is quite long for a web novel so I can understand the the reason for little chapters.

A bit sad that some part are not explored more

Spoiler

Like what's Gernoches's past? How's Euclid next step to learn as a dragon now that she's practically free? How about Randy's life? How's the System Admin after the Mercardius incident? How's the life of the real Jin-wook after that? So many part could be explored more in side stories but it simply ended there.

[collapse]

I can understand why other readers mentioned that the last few chapters are a bit rushed, perhaps because it wrap up as it is, but I think it's pretty suitable for this kind of story. I'm glad the author doesn't drag this story since it looks like a story that could be milk till it dry and lost its appeal.

To other readers who thinks that the MC is getting it too easy without any challenges, or being unrealistically too OP, I think the story itself explains it implicitly.

Spoiler

With how he's actually keep reincarnating and regressing, damn right he'll be tough af as a soul. Not to mention he was suppose to be OP and fix things according to the wish of the empire in the future. Things got easy since despite not remembering his past reincarnations and regressions, he subconsciously move to pick a better choice from his past mistakes and help his smooth sailing in finishing his "destiny"

[collapse]

It's a pretty decent read if you want a short and not too many arcs type story. Very to the point plot. <<less

it is good novel and I really enjoyed it, but there were some parts that I really hated. For example:

1) He is little egoistic like in most of Chinese novels but not much.

2) He is going on that he is going to save humanity and all but then on the other hand he is monopolizing most of things for himself (i am not naming them here) and making himself or his close subordinate stronger.

3) The part that I hated most is where they are focusing on korea development rather than... more>> earth (though in starting it looks fair but latter on it become more that only korea get advantages in everything).

I just don't like thinks where things get contradicting with what MC says he is doing but do otherwise. <<less

It’s a pretty typical modern-magic dungeon scenario, with hunters and rankings and such, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good read. I’m a sucker for this genre, and it embodies pretty much all you can expect.

I would say it's different from the standard regressor novel. In those novels usually the MC would somehow knows everything that going on at certain time or they at least they would know the essential plot information or hidden details which no one knows. In this novel however, there are a lot the MC doesn't know but his perspective on things would slowly expands and many things would be slowly unraveled.

Also there is a tangible threat to the MC which act as his motivation beside just noble cause such as... more>> saving human race. This threat also add a sense of mysteries which the MC has to slowly uncover. <<less

This is a pretty good novel, we have an MC that actually acts his age and uses his head when solving his problems/achieving his goals. While this may seem like a mediocre novel at first, there is a deeper mystery to be solved in the future. The story continuously builds and it is apparent that the author planned everything out from the beginning. I strongly suggest you try this novel out and read at least 30 or so chapters before dropping it. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

I want to attempt to clear up a few misunderstandings/misconceptions about this novel, for those who havent read it yet.

  • it's not overly nationalistic. Yes, Korea was always on top, but thats how it usually is in other works of art- movies, book, animes- most artist boost up thier countries of origin.
  • it wasnt short neither was it rushed at the end. The novel was quick since from the beginning, the author started sprinting since from the first chapter. Spoiler about a villian
    Spoiler

i thought angelica was going to be the final villain, but lol. She wasnt even close to the final villian. He took it out about 1/4th into the novel

    [collapse]
  • the author ties up everything nicely in a bow, I didnt really notice a plot hole, and if there are any, then its really negligible.
  • this is a HUGE pro for me; as most authors are incapable of writing women as romatic partners of MCs, I love the fact that this novel doesnt have an ounce sexual/romantic interest
    Spoiler

in fact, I think he might simply be asexual/aroamtic due to his origins

    [collapse]
  • i loved all the twists. They actually made sense.
  • the only con to the novel would be that all the characters didnt really have feelings. There wasnt character development, yeah the characters got stronger, combact wise, but there was much growth. Although two of the main side characters such as Nate and G-sword-devil showed development around the last 20 chapters or so.

Only two hundred chapters but I think if it was any longer it would have turned tedious. It ended right when it should have. Answers to nearly all plot lines were answered. I think the only one that we don't really know what happened is:

Spoiler

What happened to the administrator is kind of left to the imagination in the end. I know he purified it but it sounded like he was going to free it or something and replace it himself but nothing was explained there.

Pro:

Very consistent story. Can't remember any plot holes or forgotten elements other than how the system gets powered.

Reason for reincarnation is explained.

Not a lot of repetition.

Everything gets resolved. While it does seem a bit rushed in between the ending is still satisfying.

Antagonists aren't s*upid and have reasonable goals.

No Romance. In my opinion not every story needs to have romance and this one is definitely one where romance wouldn't fit in well.

Con:

The character doesn't act human at all in some cases.... more>>

I dont understand the reasoning behind the seed.
Spoiler

the seed guy just planted the 4 seeds and then chills on earth without doing anything? Why not go somewhere else and plant new ones or at least stick close and prevent any mishaps.

I don't really like to combat system. Mana, talent and skills are the only things that matter. But what I dont get is how someone with 1m mana is better than someone with 1k mana. In the novel it seems like it's an impossible fight. But In the end a skill always has the same strength no matter how much mana you have (unless you modify it with your own effort). So it should be easy to fight someone with 1000x times your mana if you are much more skilled at fighting but all the characters judge combat power by mana. <<less

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. It has been a while since I finished a novel and then end up feeling satisfied. Albeit it was quite rushed at the end, the author still managed to wrap everything up nicely. This is Tom Clancy tier. I'm not sure I've ever read a webnovel with such good world building so grand in scope yet the setting is our world the day after tomorrow. It's a mash of 30 different genres but the author actually makes it work. There's a very cynical and spot on analysis of world realpolitik in the background that's a minor part of the story, and I had to double-check the date of publication because it was entirely prescient about how China would deal with a global catastrophe.... more>> There's also throwaway remarks about how the US left the brave new world to capitalist logic or most dimensions have human cultivators elves and dragons that have absolutely nothing to do with the story, but is a nod to the ridiculous nature of tropes in most popular webnovels while successfully implementing most of them. Even plot armor is properly accounted for.

The best feature of this work is that the author had the whole plot framework in mind from the beginning. It has all the elements of an epic tale in the literary sense, and because there are clear arcs that must have been in mind from the beginning, the story is tight with little wasted verbiage and filler, looking at you GRRM.

Have a read. It's terrific. <<less

This is the best novel I have read so far and I don't think this will fall from the top 5. The novel itself was amazing but the ending was the best ending possible, not because it's the "good ending" but because the ending was just too amazing. If the ending was bad, at least I had a reason to be so sad but the ending was just too good. When I saw the words "the end" I would have cried if I could...

THE BEST novel of this genre that I have ever read in 5 YEARS! To make it short, if you liked "kill the hero" you will love this, and vice versa.

The MC is very calm, composed, smart, cunning, BUT he's not too arrogant, overconfident in his abilities or exceedingly op. In fact, his abilities are op but they have growth potential and the story proceeds in a super interesting way.

The writing quality is superb and the translation quality is exceedingly amazing to the point I often forget it wasn't English... more>> in the first place. Big thumbs up to active tled who update at incredible speed with great quality.

I want to give this series 10 stars if possible, and once I finish it, it's going directly into my "second read" reading list to enjoy the ride another time! <<less

This story is all about korea not humanities survival at all.

The MC want all the event in his past life happened only to korea.

It became boring and all his previous friend in his past self become a side character that will only be there for him to make him shine brighter.

There is no drawback with his action changing the future only a parasites is his heart planted, that was useless to begin with.

Overall typical tower/dungeon novel, but still quite interesting to read and have some nice twists.

MC is ruthless and making things done when it is required. Side characters/villains not really "deep", but definitely not annoying and bringing some nice comedy relief.

Not sure about translation quality mentioned before, but as of now quality is quite good (though I'm not a native speaker). There are some sentences which are confusing, because they are opposing things mentioned in previous chapters, but you still can follow (I saw maybe 5 of such issues).

During the first 30-40 chapters this novel felt fairly unique as far as this genre is concerned. An overpowered but not omniscient MC and a decent plot which had a nice flavor of mystery.

Spoiler

The way the mystery about the antagonist unfolded is when this novel went from interesting to quite generic. The possible betrayal of the people surrounding the MC kept me interested until it was revealed that many people were pseudo puppets; characters whose actions are almost controlled by an external curse. The antagonist was also revealed to be some random alien from a different dimension. All this did for me was remove a good and interesting plot device based on human emotion and motives just to introduce the generic, black-and-white, good and evil situation. In my opinion this novel would have progressed much better if the problems faced by the MC were fueled by human actions and not some random boss monster alien using a human skin.

I could only see this as a waste of potential for a novel that had the chance to break out of the generic KR regressor/dungeon type novel. At this point the biggest advantage this novel has over many other KR novels is the lack of extreme nationalism. It was nice to see an international problem being taken care of at an international level rather than the whole 'Korea #1' situation where Japan and USA were portrayed as completely incompetent. I understand the mindset but I'm also tired of reading about Korea being 95% of the worlds power while everyone else gets sh*t on in these dungeon novels.
