The World of the Future, Virtual Idols PK Real Idols

“Every time background music plays in my head, I feel like there is nothing to be afraid of.” —Fang Zhao

Toward the end of the apocalyptic period, Fang Zhao lost his life. However, instead of dying, he found himself 500 years later in the body of a young and aspiring composer who shared the same name. Having received a second chance at life, Fang Zhao sets out to achieve the previous owner’s dreams.

Armed with the experience of living through an apocalyptic age and his profession as a composer before that period, Fang Zhao uses his talent, wits, and knowledge to make his mark in the entertainment industry of the future.

So I love this book. I also love at least two of the other books from this author. Of the three I’ve read this is my second favorite. “Chronicles of Primordial Wars” is my first.
There are many things to love and while I won’t say it’s perfect; it really suits my taste.

I think one of the main things people complain about is how the plot seams to be all over the place. I would like to defend this. The lead (like the description says) is reborn after hundreds of... more>> years. When he died, he had been living through the apocalypse. Let me ask? If you were reborn after escaping hell, would you not go off to experience as many things as you could? Especially if you have the means and the ability. So I would say his actions of doing anything and everything fit perfectly into the story.

I am on the fence about the ending. On one hand I love it because it’s so open to interpretation, and on the other it makes me painfully crave for more. The already huge world open for exploration had just opened up even more and there where a few sub plots that had shown huge potential. Ending the way it does is perfectly in line with the MC character. If it were to stop anywhere it was also a good spot as it stops the book from becoming drawn out and loosing its original charm.

I don’t want to go into a tangent but I would like to put forward a specific observation. His pet dog and the cyborg cat from another novel by this author “Star Rank Hunter” show an identical theme. It merges the two worlds and expresses a shared universe. I like this idea as it opens up what comes after the ending even more. <<less

One of my favorite novel!

I read this novel many times and I still love it. The plot, the characters, everything are good to me. I love how the novel don't have any romance. When I'm getting bored reading novels full of love story and fighting, I reread this one or other stories without romance.

Highly recommended!

Since so many people already writing lengthy reviews, I will just make mine short.

I freaking love this novel. Re-reading this and still like it. To people that saw top reviews, all I can say is, read the novel first before you judge.

Why I like this novel? This is a nice relaxing novel with no romance nor fan service and honestly if you are like me who just want to read without seeing 'jade this jade that' with some action [that can really make you get excited because how cool it... more>> is] then it is for you.

Yes, the MC is OP. So what? He is a grandpa. Honestly, have you see all those grandpa/grannies in every manga/novel/webtoon etc? They are bad-ass right? So why are you having qualm about MC being bad-ass here? Also, unlike others novel where every side character is annoying to the max with low IQ/EQ, this novel doesn't do that so seriously, MC is not Gary or something like that. For example Mo Lang, MC's teacher is #1 in music industry and author keep telling that MC is still considered newbie that is why we have school arc and even after MC graduated he is still considered 'promising seedling' but nobody is saying MC beat Mo Lang, his teacher because again, he is not Gary duh.

The youngsters are well, they makes you want to pat their head while at the same time smack them because how naive they are. But they aren't obnoxious. For example, Barbara, unlike other's novel, Barbara lose her diamond ring but she did not making the soldiers risking their life just so she can get her diamond ring back. But of course my favorite will be Zaro. I can understand why his grandpa like him so much.

Well I will stop here. Anyway, it is best if you read the novel yourself and decided if this is the novel for you or not. <<less

I'm at chapter 184, and a 6/10 for now.
I might update the review later if there is any major change in the story.

The good:

The MC is mature and level headed
Futuristic world that gives a fresh perspective from the MC's point of view as opposed to going to the past and knowing everything.
Interesting plots.
The translation.
The jokes.

... more>> The bad :

PG13 univers :
We have this futuristic society but we only show the good side. The story briefly tell us about the dark side, just enough so we know it's there. (doesn't impact the story at all)

Omnipotent MC :
The MC died after the 100 yr war and is revived. Taking that plot as an excuse, he can do anything and everything.
He is the best composer, mixer, fighter, gamer, director, manager, teacher, plotter, pet owner, etc. etc...
And since there is only one religion in this LN, the religion of a Martyr, that also makes him a god.
He is basicaly kim jong-un.

That's the reason the story feel bland, I mean, what happened to the early arc where the MC develop his philosophies of what is a 'hero' ?
he was all : "A hero is not that awesome OP character that save the day, but normal people like you and me, who adapted to the the cruelty of the world and changes in order to survive bla, bla, bla.."

Then the story proceeds to ignore this concept completely.
Each arc, The OP MC is thrown into difficult situation, the situation demand a different expertise but the MC keeps calm, he accomplish his objectif perfectly, people around him are in awe, he gets more popular.
Rinse and repeat!

Update: Ch.254 It gets better. <<less

I've finally reached the end of this novel after a week of secluded binge reading.
And reaching it had left me empty, lost and craving for more. As one person had said on their review,
"There was no romance and girl chasing. This novel was simply a tale of a Hero."

And I couldn't agree more.

It left me in awe, heart break for reaching the end, and lost for knowing there's no other works like this from the author, Chen Ci Lan Tiao.

I know I could not simply move on... more>> from this novel, perhaps in the future, I will be rereading this again and again. <<less

A unique piece of work amongst the other CNs. It follows the MC 500 years into the future after his death in war of the founding era.

He is one of the rare MC's that remain consistent to what he should be at his age.

Which means there no MC who's above 100yrs old acting like a chunnibyou teenager. YAY!!!

Its not for those looking for romance for there's truly none (can't find a female around MC at all...)

Spoiler

MC is a bit gary stu with all his successes in gaming, military and whatnot; but it isnt overdone and on the contrary well founded. Eg:- he was a warlord in his past life and his physique has been upgraded so success in the military is normal

[collapse]

Its a great novel that focuses more on MC than side characters but still somewhat fleshes out the important ones (great grandparents, Zaro, Xue Jing, Ming Cang etc.)

However after a while these characters decrease in importance and appearance as new more powerful characters take stage.

Another important character is:-

Spoiler

Curly hair, the dog that may be the cause of MC's rebirth. I will not spoil more about him, read it yourself to know more

[collapse]

Usually this kind of book that never deviates from the topic and tries it's best to keep the MC grounded will be given 5 stars by me but the ending of this one was too rushed and left many plot points and Plot holes unexplained and unexplored. This waste of potential made me dock a star. If this novel had continued then it would have even more potential then many well known novel as the author had taken real care during the world building. <<less

This is a slice of life novel. The comedy is gold. MC is OP. No romance, and they got some cute pets and decent side characters. My only problem with this is that it feels like there should be more to the story. There was so many potential subplots.

Spoiler

Who is the mystery fan? What's the deal with spiky hare? What about the outsiders/aliens?

It's a slice of life novel. There aren't really any hardships for the MC. Everything he does, he's amazing at it, and people are amazed he's amazing at it. It's a pretty relaxing read with no tension. If that's what you're looking for, then you found it.

Definitely one of the best CN webnovels that I have ever read. The MC is a rare breed of protagonist (his tolerance is really next level) and the supporting characters are overall great. The universe of the novel is also well-crafted and is rather consistent. There is nothing much to dislike about the novel unless you are not a big fan of a slice of life novel. One thing that people might complain about is the rather rushed ending. Nevertheless, it is not a big issue due to the nature... more>> of the novel. <<less

Man I can't believe it's over... I loved reading about gramps Fang Zhao and Curly Hair

Spoiler

I can't believe Fang Zhao gave Spiky Hair away to Little Bear 😢 dude that's your pet that protected your home. Also, I'm sad that the author chose to end it when people were getting ready to immigrate to another planet. I mean it does make sense to end Fang Zhao's journey there... but I wanted to read more of his shenanigans 🥺😭😢

I like this novel, but I also recommend you to read triggerk's review, just in case this isn't type story you want to read.

Why I like this novel?

Because this is just a laidback novel.

... more>> (copy-pasting my review on my rec list)

Basically a 'retirement' story with OP MC. No character development, no revenge, no drama.

He only want to do whatever he want with his life, trying here and there, if I must desrcibe it "he is compensating the lost youth because of the apocalypse ", he felt glad he is now in future which everything he with his friend do bear fruit (peace).

This is kind of heavy but also slife of life, I really like this novel even though there is 'no plot'.

So it is about 'OP' leader soldier who reborn into a musician body, he once abandoned his dream becoming musician (he still making music score but, there is no way artist can do anything in war situation beside focusing on surviving right?) because of apocalypse but now he is back making one!

He sounds OP in modern time, but it is because of his experience, I love seeing the author describing when he is composing or having idea.

The translation is painfully slow..

The arc that made me sad is the film adaptation, which is funny he acting as himself. But the emotion is </3

I really have fun reading this, if you search for plot with direction, this isn't for you.

If you want to see reborn old OP soldier who likes to compose doing whatever he want / enjoy his life to fullest, this is for you. It is light, dreamlike, random journey, so don't bother or thinking about it too much. <<less

Finally, for 5 days straight, I have finished reading this awesome novel!

This novel made me cry, laugh or sometimes both. Many lessons and realizations were brought forth when I was reading this novel. I really can’t fathom what to say but given my high standards, I see a gem in this one.

Every characters were well- thought out for, though there times when some character were given more exposure (cough, Zaro, cough), it somehow made the shift of atmosphere when reading the novel flow smoothly. From seriousness to funny, it kinda... more>> balance things out.

What I’m just sad about is Fang Zhao not having a love interest, even just a passing line that he got married or something. Hahahahaha but it’s funny though, he is still single even after 500 years transmigrating to the body he has now. Though he got an instant son in a form of a very OP dog where I must say much more stronger, awesome and OP than he is 😂

Well anyways, I can vouch the high quality for this one. Superstars of Tomorrow is well-thought, well-crafted with awesome elements though yeah, there’s a few loopholes but hey, that’s a common occurence. Overall, this novel is amazing so 5 stars! <<less

4/5

Finally finished.

Even before this series was completed I have re-read this multiple times. It's not perfect and if properly edited and proofread it could be better but because it has good pacing and a somewhat simple enough storyline that it is enjoyable from start to finish. The ending is abrupt but I like it anyway.

I wish we could learn more of maybe FZ' space adventures or discovering more of Curly's (possible) origins but overall, a satisfying read. Would recommend to readers who want something light and easy to... more>> read, like a slice of life yet not. Give it a try. <<less

It suck after chp 100 or so.

and then other stuff. It almost like milking off the composing music subject enough and ran out of idea so here's some random side story. Then the author decided maybe he'll concentrate on end of days veteran background. Unfortunately how he delve into MC's past is just background fluff. Everything with this story is surface area with no depth and MC seems flawless. It's really boring. Just a quest to conquer and then a new quest, no overarching theme.

Also having music to be able to move people enough to sell product, movie, etc.. Is hard to suspend your belief. I try to give lee way but everything works out for this guy. There is no real struggle or character growth cause he's perfect. Just gotta show off his skill to people to under estimate him cause he's young. Come on man. You can do that for like first 100 chapters then you end up out of steam. <<less

Honestly I'm utterly confused on why anyone would give this novel rating below 4.5
This is probably the first legit futuristic novel I have ever read and I consider the best of em all.
This novel is full of face smacking, but doesn't reduce the enemies IQ. Also, the orchestra scene always makes my neck hair stands up. Like, holy shi-

Someone actually made a list on spotify for this. So if you want double the experience lololol read it while listening to them. I swear, double the experince.

Superstars of Tomorrow is a slice-of-life story about a man named Fang Zhao who is reborn many years later after his death. He is given another chance in life that he never had in his past life as the world was ending. Fang Zhao get to pursue his passion for composing music.

This is not your typical novel where there is blood-pumping action but it is an interesting story that gets you wanting to read more.

The words are constructed smoothly that it is very easy to read.

To be honest, this was... more>> one of the stories that got me into reading LN and WN. I had come from a long way and stayed.

Also, your heart won't hurt from reading this novel since there are no scummy relatives out to harm the MC.

I really recommend reading this. You'll like the MC and you'll want to root for him.

So read and get to know our God Zhao! <<less

mediocre at best. I was excited to read seeing the reviews at rating but alas, it's your typical chinse face smacking with ret*rded mobs and 2d side characters novel. Just pure disappointing. I just kept on reading, since I have nothing to read and skipping the "shocked comments" of some random people. Yes it's interesting at early chapters (prolly 30-50) and then face smacking, another face smacking, and face smacking. Same troupe over again. Random mobs downgrading and cursing MC then face smack them. What I only like about this... more>> is the MC's mentality as an old man but that's all. It's disappointing really. It has potential but author gloss over important details about his past and proceeds to face smack random people online which is totally useless. <<less

This is what you'd call an ok read. Not bad, not good, just ok. If you break down the story to individual components like character development, side characters, plot and world building, you'll find nothing impressive. When they come together, they make a slightly better whole. I gave it and extra star cus it can be amusing at times.

The MC is a composer who later became a war hero after an apocalypse but died just before the end of the war and was reborn. Now when you set up a... more>> character that's lived for close to a century and done a lot of awesome stuff there's not really much you can do about character development. He's already mature and steady and has a lot of skills. You won't see any kind of character development.

The MC has no friends, lovers or enemies. There's no aim in the story at all. He wants to compose? You won't see any background on it. He will just pull brilliant compositions out of nothing. He doesn't want to join the military but constantly gets entangled in it. He doesn't have a clear goal or ambition. The MC is mainly just going around doing random things at random times. Side characters? Well they're only shown for the bare minimum where they are needed. We see no development on that side. You won't get to know any of them personally and they exist only to make the MC seem slightly less like a Mary Sue and give all the right reactions to his doings.

The world building is like looking through a foggy glass. You see outlines of stuff but at the same time you can't really see anything either. The author sets up an interesting premise of a post apocalyptic world in which the MC became a general and goes on about how that era directly affected the current futuristic world where he was reborn but, you won't get to see any of it. All of it, both past and present, are just brushed over.

Overall, its a good way to kill some time. But not the kind of story that will hook you in and keep you entranced. <<less

Oh my one my fave novel where I dont mind pay to read the latest chapter, its about a composer who living in apocalypse era and die (older), after that he transmigration to another body (younger) with same name Fang Zhao in in the future. The main MC was calm and kinda charismatic although he not handsome, almost no romance and there many funny adventure await him.

Easily got hooked by Fang Zhao's character. Slander him? That sh*t isn't important in his days. There are too many people supporting him.

MC's dog rising in fame is fine. His alien pet rising in fame is fine too. But do they really have to be also OP? This is just my problem. I am fine with just MC alone having amazing skills. I just hope things won't really get ridiculous.
