Wahhhhhh, my review got deleted when my laptop ran out of batteryyyyy---

Basically, the guy above me is a s*upid fellow traumatised by japanese rom coms.

And, you really can't predict stories with just the first girl troupe, you know? There's bound to be troupes...

... more>> There's only two girls, bet there's only gonna be two girls. Doubt there's going to really be a waifu war, with how it's written... 80% there isn't going to be another girl besides teacher and poisonous tongue.

And, wish-fulfillment is pretty much in any novel. If not, what is the point? And it doesn't even seem to be a severe case of wish-fulfillment... it's really not bad at all, not some average-joe going around getting all the troupe-ladies doing bull... don't argue back, you said you only read the epilogue, the epilogue is always s*upidly giddy in rom coms.

From my experience, novels with MCs like these are pretty good.

Unless it goes a different way than I expect, five stars! If it changes, my review changes! Do read it, hehe.

Just don't be that one traumatized dude. How else you gonna find stuff that makes you happy? One must waste time... to... be happy? <<less

I started this novel because I thought it sounded good, which it actually turned out to be. They start distant then slowly start to get closer, however, her dialect doesn't change much (she's still abrasive towards him).

Spoiler

The MC is childhood friends with a popular girl. The author tricks (?) us to think that she, the childhood friend, likes the MC, but she doesn't (I think).

As the MC gets closer to the FMC, he discovers that she actually has dual personalities which were made by her to deal with a trauma of some sorts (we don't know yet). Her 'base' personality is very gentle and caring, however, the teacher can only bring it out for short periods of time. Her 'main' personality is the poisonous one.

The MC then has to get rid of one personality which a very pressuring task for a high schooler as it's like killing a person.

[collapse]

I like the plot so far and would recommend have a go at it.

P.S. The guy below me, Meloonseed, isn't talking about me... I think.

P.S.S. The guy above me, Boogle, doesn't know what romance looks like... OK. He probably does, but only in novels containing an MC so dense, light bends around them. <<less

This is a story about how two weirdo met each other. From volume 1 to volume 5 of the web novel, I'd say that there are twists. But from volume 6 onwards it will be a roller-coaster of feelings and emotions like I'd never felt before. Both the MC and FMC is quirky to say the least and not everybody will like them. I would recommend to tough it out the first two volumes even if you dislike one of them, or not, your choice. A few people has also... more>> said that it was similar to Oregairu but the later volumes proved that it was nothing alike. I got very very very emotional reading the last few volumes. Without spoiling, the ending was nothing short of brilliant. Thank you Mizuno-sensei for writing this masterpiece.

The FanTL is not complete yet (77 @ the time of me writing this), so I resorted to MTL and my own sub-par Japanese comprehension. But I'd say it was worth it. This will end up as one of the most impactful romance I've read in recent years. I hope that the FanTL one day reaches the closing chapters because it isn't something I want people to miss out on.

Spoiler

If you get to the end, do not forget to read the extras, especially the last two. It is very bittersweet, and tugs your heartstrings. But you will not regret it. This makes me realise that most romance series doesn't cover the couple's whole life, most just end at confession, dating, or marriage. Thank you author for writing this. This light novel is definitely one of the few ones that I have teared up so much at. The ending of the story (I'm not gonna spoil) is certainly not a sad one at the core, but like most people I couldn't help but cry. You'll understand when you get to the final chap/epilogue. And the reason for it was the emotional journey that it took us readers in those 137 chapters. It's not a perfect book by any means, it has it awkward moments (not a fault of the... more>> translation though, it's top notch) and like most people said the transition towards a more grim tone and somewhat of turbulent pacing might annoy some people at least. But, I couldn't stop reading it even then. Seeing the two main characters each grow in their own ways due to their influence on each other was truly realistic. The guy who reviewed right before me talked about how the MC was kind of lame for his passiveness and being a clown and all. I disagree, it's something that makes him special in many ways, and his passivity isn't the fault of character writing but rather reveals the pessimistic outlook that the MC holds, a clear contrast with his joker-ish personality. Arina and his relationship wasn't about who confessed first either way, plenty of people found the "courage" to confess to her, but that didn't mean she ever harbored the same feelings for them. That's why it was important for Sui to be in her life. I won't spoil the answer to the question of whether or not they end up together, because despite what the tags might have you believe it's certainly not that simple or perfect. There were many obstacles along the way, not just of their relationship with each other but also with Arina's relationship with other people and herself. I believe each chapter with the two of them is precious because it helped them to become who they were in the end (although some chapters might be considered filler now since there's a revised edition or something). Arina slowly opening up to him and making friends, finally living her life was certainly joyful to read through. I'll definitely read this again in a year or two, and I hope I will be able to feel the rush of emotions I felt reading this once more.

Score: 4.9/5 (rounded off to 5 stars, so don't complain)

PS: I definitely didn't sob so much reading the epilogue that my eyes got blurry. <<less

Honeslty, I like the novel, but I'm really not a fan of the abusive type of relationship that they have where the FMC is constantly hitting and pushing the MC around. Call her a tsundere or whatever, but there's literally an instance where she punches him hard enough that he gets a concussion and faints. She wasn't even apologetic after the fact. Moreover, that wasn't the first time he's been punched or hit by her. See that as a joke if you like, but it isn't remotely funny. Don't know... more>> what it is with JP LN's that just like having their MC's abused by women for absolutely no reason and then treat it as a joke.

MC isn't without fault either as I don't like how much of a coward he can come off to be sometimes and while not dense, he often times fails at addressing others feelings that are directed at him and those of his own.

Anyway, aside from that little rant, the overall flow of the novel is really good and as the novel has progressed the relationship between the two is gradually mellowing out. Albeit the FMC is still abrasive in her actions and words sometimes. I have to admit though that they certainly do have a unique dynamic to them that captures my attention.

I usually would avoid reading a novel such as this because I hate the amnesia trope, but this is well written and doesn't leave too bad a taste in my mouth. Nonetheless, I went on ahead and found the rest of the chapters for this novel and while the ending was very touching and beautiful, I'm not that big of a fan of the events before then.
Spoiler

Really didn't like the whole ordeal with the MC all of a sudden falling into a coma for three years. Perhaps it was done by the author due to the fact that the FMC hadn't yet regained her memories of him and him being in a coma was used as a buffer time for her to remember everything and be more impactful or whatever, but it felt really forced.

[collapse]

Overall, I'd have to give this somewhere around a 7.5-8/10. <<less

This is the best rom com I have ever read. Like literally the best (for me). The other reviews explained it better so I'm just gonna say go read it.

P.S

(It is entirely different from otonari no tenshi tropes kind of MC. Though dense, the MC have a different approach in life)

Really good story, great likeable characters. For some reason the humor of the ML really resonated with me, and it was fun to read.

The story starts off slow, but if you're able to read through the first 5 volumes (roughly chapter 70 or so), it not only picks up pace, but also takes you through a roller coaster ride with its twists and turns.

Would recommend 10/10 times.

This is an amazing novel. Begins with a good story with MC and heroin the unique makes it easy to read. The plot is easy to follow, there are no drastic changes to the story.

Spoiler

the development of the MC & heroin relationship began in WN vol 6 (here hiwa arina has amnesia and forgets about Sakaki Sui), then the story became even more interesting. While the execution of the story is very good.

(addition: after the story is very touching especially in the last 2 chapters)

Well, translator here, kinda late to add my review at this point, but well, it was kinda hard to move on from this novel, so cut me some slack.

Honestly, I have a lot of things to say about this series, from how I admired the author, the simple, yet endearing plot, the brilliant casts and how well written the series is overall. Keep in mind that the author isn't exactly a 'Light Novel Author'. He aimed to make the series more acceptable to be consumed by both the general public... more>> and the otaku community. In other words, what he was trying to aim was instead of making splash in the otaku community like what Otonari did, he tried to create something that was probably close to novels like Autofiction or Socrates in Love, novels that everyone could enjoy. This is why the second half of the story and the closure felt like it belonged to something that you'd see in J-Dramas instead of Romcom LNs.

I could go on, but I don't want to say too many things here, so I'll get to the point and say both the best and the worst part of the series in one go. Also, I'll try my best to keep this review spoiler-free.

The best part of the series is the characters. Mainly the MC and FMC, though the side characters are also memorable as well. The MC, to describe him with his own words, is a jester. He'd make jokes to lighten up the situations, trying to make everyone around him smiles like a jester that brought happiness to others. But, with those same jokes, he always tried to escape from reality, his surroundings and even himself. It was something that he was aware of, though, but his realist nature, or rather, pessimistic and nihilistic nature held him back from ever changing himself. Meanwhile the FMC is the total opposite of the MC. The MC was able to charm people with his words, but the FMC drove them away with her words instead. While the MC was trapped in his pessimistic and nihilistic nature, the FMC was able to move forward, constantly improving herself to be a better person due to her nature as an optimist, idealist dreamer. Due to their opposite natures, they were attracted toward each other and a bittersweet romance began to bloom between them.

Then the worst part of the series is that it felt really ambitious. Bridging between the otaku community and the general public is hard and I think the author was also aware of it, that was why he completely revised the story earlier this year and cut off most of the generic tropes he set up. This ambitiousness was the reason why there were discrepancies between the first half and the second half of the story. The first half of the story was clearly meant to cater to his otaku audience, but in the second half of the story, he turned it into a full-blown J-Drama instead, trying to appeal for the general audience more. While this doesn't seem like a big deal as the story still feels enjoyable overall, this kind of thing isn't something that everyone could enjoy. The general audience would feel weirded out by the generic romcom tropes on the first half while the otaku community would find fault with how 'outlandish' the second half went.

Overall, I enjoyed reading the series. While I used Autofiction and Socrates in Love as comparison, the series is still too flawed to be compared to both of them, but it's still way ahead of most if not all the romcom LNs I've ever read. If I could erase my memories of this series so I could read it once again and cry my heart out, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

TL;DR I recommend this series. Read it. <<less

Ahh... what a ride this was, but it was worth it. I was really scared of this novel to be good cuz I found it similar to oregairu at start (I'm not saying oregairu is bad it's the opposite, I love that too that's why I was against reading something similar to it cuz I can't help but compare it to that and it'll be turn off for me) but it took the story totally different that I didn't expect and author really done his job by making taking reader's... more>> emotions to different level, I'm not gonna spoil, but ratings speaks the truth. It's a good story. I especially liked how the two main characters Sui and Arina's dynamic. Sui's comedic demeanor and way of life is really fun to read for me. However, the two things I don't like about it were the pacing and a few tropes. The pacing is something that is mostly relevant about the last 20 chapters, where there are time-skips everywhere, yet it feels so slow to reach the resolution. And for the most part, every twist is very sudden, appearing apparently out of nowhere. For the... more>> tropes,

Spoiler

the worst part was the coma. The drama and angst really felt excessive by then, as we knew that they loved each other, and there was only one inexplicable thing getting in the way, which was Arina's memory loss of all things Sui. Even if it was explained by Sui's excessive drinking of tomato juice, it felt too perfectly timed.

Plus, Arina's multiple personalities weren't really developed too much. Although it played an important role in the story, in hindsight Arina's soft side didn't make many appearances.

But, as I stated at the start, I do like the story and the characters within them. It really suited my taste to read a relatively short rom-com. <<less

Man what a stroy this is. The MC is fun to read, the FL character growth is just amazing. All the side characters are likeable and everyone has their own personality.

The start of the story might seems like a generic romcom at the first glance, but it quickly becomes more and more interesting with every chapters.

But the ending man, the ending was a journey. It was a beautiful beautiful beautiful piece of art. I cried, laughed, and cried again.

I've read quite the number of books, LNs and WNs but this has got to be one of the greatest stories I have ever read (not only comparing to other japanese LNs but just books in general). The series has a balance of drama, sweetness and bitterness and a great plot overall. The author has a great sense of switching between arcs of SOL and comedy to one of drama and bittersweetness frequently throughout the story, creating a great story experience and development. Everything from C1 to the epilogue was... more>> all written out greatly. Not only that but the TL for this series has been amazing as well, with quality yet frequent updates. <<less

Enjoyable slow drama mostly of a harsh, cold girl gradually opening to MC and becoming closer. As of C36, there's light hints of romance but nothing concrete and likely a long way away.

It's mostly the pair helping random clubs which is fine. She still insults him a lot but seems to have softened a bit.

Trauma of past is present and probably will be addressed as a major plot eventually.

It's alright so far. It's also not romance at this point. The MC and FMC show no potential love between them so far.

Heads up, the author uses a lot of, out of the blue references that no high schooler would use. (Think stuff about very specific WW2 side events, etc.)

The MC and FMC back and forth is fun, but the snail pace of the "story" is hindering to the novel. I would say the main 'conflict' started only at around ch20~.

The more I read the more I realize that I dislike this kind of MC. Quite interesting at first but really get worst around 80 chapters.

He is quite quirky and kind of a unique character. From the beginning, I had quite fun at first too, but I'm getting tired of his attitude, his cowardice and lack of self respect. He takes all things as a joke, I get it that it was his self defense mechanism to just joke about everything so he doesn't get hurt, but author doesn't seem... more>> to plan to give any growth for the MC. And it keeps getting worse even! Since the MC is such a joker, all people around him especially the girls treat him badly as time passes, insulting him here and there, despite that all the MC does was accept everything whether it is the FMC and her friends and even his little sister. It was so painful, disgusting and pitiful to read. I don't get this kind of fetish. I just don't understand why would people love a Main Character who is completely being insulted, physically abused and looked down on. It's not fun even as a joke. I'm also annoyed at the fact that the story focus on the FMC completely, FMC basically the everything is this story and the MC was there as a helper, a s*ave and a design for her growth. The author basically didn't give much development for the MC. Looking from the POV of Side characters, MC seems to be a guy that would be somewhat popular, but the MC completely denies it even if some people says it to him, I think this also needs [Inferiority complex] tag here. The MC completely take himself as an unworthy guy who is always the bottom of everything. It's uunbearable. Anyways. It's just my ranting, I can totally see many reviews enjoying this story. Though, not for me. I wanted to dropped it around chapter 80+ but my curiosity got over me as I read many good reviews about the ending. Main reason for my dwindling interest in the story is because despite the MC being actually somewhat of a cool and fun guy if you look on the outside but i've been having a hard time enjoying myself because MC's inner monologue filled with insecurity and cowardice. I believe that a guy should be the one to make the first move in a relationship because that would be cooler in my perspective and I find it lame to see guys passively waiting for the girl to make the first move. So I mostly skimmed from 90 to 110 chapters and finally got to chapter 113 where the heavy drama starts. I didn't enjoy the story that much after I started losing interest in 'round 80+ chaps, still, I have to say it has a really good conclusion. Many can write a great start up to the middle of the story but rarely author's give their best on creating a satisfying ending. Many authors ends their story because they lost inspiration or wanted to write a different story. I didn't say this novel is different from those novels I read, but this novel at least was still given a more detailed conclusion compared to others. As most stories I read were mostly given vague ending or ended in a rush. For future readers.. Even if the story becomes so annoying and unbearable. If you're planning to dropped this story. I still recommend to skim through it, the ending was worth it.

Story: 4/5
Concept: 3/5
Style: 3/5
Characters: 2/5
Enjoyment: 2/5
Overall: 3/5

This story has been very hard for me to enjoy, but I think many others could enjoy it. I read lots novels with Alpha or At least Confident protagonists so having a protagonist like this is more like a suffering for me. I'm mad myself for not being able to enjoy a good story like this. :3 <<less

Look, I can go on about the pacing issues and other stuff but at the end of the day it was a beautiful novel which the author took care in writing. There might be dry spells at time but when I finished the novel I was basically bawling my eyes out and that happens very rarely in a romance novel. My first and most likely only review.

Personally I loved the story it was an amazing read although the MC and FMC especially at the beginning can seem odd as well as a little annoying. It develops extremely well and the ending doesn’t disappoint. Nor does the author let things go on for too long with there only being one major slightly awkward tone shift but didn’t take away from my enjoyment. An amazing read that I would definitely recommend.

This novel gives off similar vibes to Oregairu season 1, at least in the beginning, where it's kind of a chill school slice of life story with bits of romance where an eccentric protagonist and the cold female lead go around and help school clubs. But in reality it is very different from Oregairu. Our protagonist isn't gloomy or a loner, but kind of a class clown character. He could be a bit cringe at time but it was better than being bland. The female lead is really cold and... more>> sometimes a bit too abusive but still remained likeable, because she has her reasons for the way she acts. They had good chemistry, and that's all that really matters.

As generic as this setup felt, I still found myself enjoying it. The characters were intriguing enough where you wanted to know what happens next. This and the excellent translation propelled me all the way until the end, through the bad and good parts.

Because phew, there's quite a bit of bad. The story takes a turn for the serious, and I won't spoil anything, but from my POV it really mishandles some heavy subject matter. There's some pretty dark stuff in here, but the author tries to gloss over it when it should be more consequential. He wanted to keep the chill romance school life vibes, but it felt out of place given what some of the characters were going through. Almost every serious or dramatic turn of event was just not well written imo. I found myself frustrated as the plot got serious but never offered anything too interesting, instead choosing to prolong the inevitable with a series of convenient and inconvenient plot twists.

I really think there was a lot of missed potential with the female lead who's backstory could have been the foundation for some great stories, but was not used to the fullest or most interesting extent.

And that brings us to the final arcs, where the dumbest and most frustrating event happens which served to drag the story 30 more chapters without offering any deeper insight, to then finally conclude with an ending everyone saw coming. By the time the ending rolled around, I wasn't excited or happy for the characters, just relieved it was finally over. "Venomous Tongue" is far from the worst romcom out there, and can be pretty enjoyable, but it drops the ball when it comes to drama and plot.

P.S. I always laughed in my head about how the MC's breath would probably always stink of tomato lol <<less
