There are holes in the sky, in the sea, and in the ground all over the world.
From the hole came all kinds of monsters that could not exist in the world.
The world was destroyed, and people with special abilities appeared.
Survivors who survived hid all over the world and lived like bugs.

And the ability that I was given in that hellish world.
It was to rob the other awakeners of power.

I was particularly impressed with this novel.

I don't want to spoil anything about the storyline in review, so I'll just pick out a few points I enjoyed -

1.) The MC is very human. You understand why he makes the decisions he makes, and his decision-making process is fluid. At one point he makes one moral decision, but with access to different information, he later makes the opposite moral decision. It makes him a lot more likable than the standard monolithic-mentality MC's, or worse, the ones that will change their behavior... more>> to force whatever plot-points the author has planned.

2.) The side characters mattered. In pretty much every ability steal (carnivore) type novel, the MC grows very quickly and to the point that he's generally the only character that actually matters in a battle, minus minor supportive roles. This pretty much ends up inevitable by the end of these types of novels. It did not work out that way here. Characters introduced throughout the series remained entirely relevant right to the end.

3.) Common tropes introduced in unique ways. As you progress through the story, you get introduced to certain popular novel tropes that you've probably seen quite a few times by now, if you're a regular on NU. Potentially though, you've not seen them brought into the story in quite the way they were here. There were a few times I found myself praising the author for their clever implementation/usage.

4.) The ending didn't suck. I've commonly found that novels of this sort often fall flat on their face into a rushed / unsatisfying ending. This one didn't, at least for my taste.

5.) Characters can die. This may be a negative point for a lot of people, but it isn't for me. If the author is not willing to allow any mainline characters that have some reader attachment to die, there is basically no suspense when they get into difficult life-threatening situations. Why worry about their safety if you know they're just going to get whisked to safety at the last moment anyway? The potential suddenness of loss that can happen here adds suspense and tension to serious situations. Albeit, it's not overdone either. A good balance, I think.

So yeah, overall, 5/5. I enjoyed the ride.

Some other thoughts about the translator's website -

It's completely translated already on the translator's website, although as of this review about half of them are "premium". Free pace is 4/week. Donations/Crowdfunding unlock the rest for everyone. <<less

I read this up to chapter 43-ish~ but like forcibly. IDK what it is but I just couldn't connect or care for any of the freaking characters, especially the MC. What's the point of reading something when I can't even root for the guy we're supposed to relate/like?

The author tries to make him into this 'realist' apocalyptic hunter that is ruthless and blunt but also hanging onto his morals to make him likable but somehow he seems to lack any sort of persona; I couldn't care less for this man.... more>> It also wasn't a plus when this character says that "he would give his citizenship to Chan-soo because he's a great guy whom he owes a lot to" but literally immediately proceeds to stab him to steal his power because "the hospital staff wouldn't be able to make it in time to save Chan-soo so might as well put him out his misery" which was actual bullsh*t because Chan-soo just went into a coma afterwards.

I swear that I tried but I just began skimming the text at best, no fault to the translators. Am I the only who feels this way? I can't be the only one. Either way Imma just leave this unrated because I just couldn't bother to read this further into the plot but tell me if you feel differently and if not, here's a fair warning. <<less

Looks great!

While the vast majority of Korean novels I have read have been fairly bland, this one is an exception. Most KR novels I have read tend to have extremely simplistic prose. Something like "I walked along the footpath. I saw a dog. It was large." This novel seems to be better in this regard. Too early to make a proper conclusion though.

It also feels like the author is trying to build up a proper world, though at Chapter 14 it's still too early to tell how it will turn... more>> out.

The power system might also be interesting. Give it a read and see how you like it! <<less

It started with the MC, who worked as a guide for awakeners/hunters and became a survival expert. It was really an interesting read, the narrative was great but with some translations error in most chapters, I'd rate it a 4 at most. However, something happened in around C50 that reverted this novel to every KN novel out there. It would be a massive spoiler, so I won't explain further. It's still a pretty fun read if you have nothing to do rn.

I'd still give this a 3.5 because it's still... more>> better than most sh*t here, but the massive potential being wasted made me drop it to 2. <<less

I'm not really good at giving reviews but this novel is worth the read and i'll stick it out till the end. Its a fast paced story (200 chapters) but it doesn't make you feel like it is when you're reading it. Well written story with a likeable MC and side characters.

Tbh I didn't think I was gonna like this because I prefer to read game element novels but it got me hooked straight away. I won't say its the best thing I've read but it was good enough for... more>> me to read all the available chapters in one sitting.

Although I liked the MCs personality from the start I was glad when (SPOILER)

he gets his previous life memories back and his personality changes to a more confident and capable type

So not my cup of tea so to speak.

Very post apocalyptic

And some spoilers for those that really want to know.... (but I only read to chapter 13....)

Spoiler

So it's a post apocalyptic world like the blurb said... and there are 'cities' which apparently everyone wants to get citizenship to join in....

And the MC can absorb other awakeners abilities when they die next to him/he kills them.

The MC was supposed to be a 'guide' that led awakener groups around... but honestly I wasn't feeling that impressed with any of it.

But I only read to chapter 13 so I'm not going to rate it... it might improve a lot later on... but me personally...I'm just not feeling this storyline.

Great Novel. Contrary to the stereotype relating to such a title, the MC doesn't mindlessly kill people to absorb their ability. He possess a generally good moral though if situation comes to push, he's not afraid to get himself dirty. He makes great effort of not harming those unrelated to those he deemed as threat or hostile. He only possess one goal which is to survive but he also not afraid of helping others to survive. Unlike those common tropes where he vowed to survive and proceeds to ignore everyone... more>> else. <<less

It's a good story! The continuity feels good and I don't feel MC is just unrepentant a**hole. The setting is interesting and the story moves along and doesn't get stuck. Worth a read!

it’s pretty good. I like the MC. He has a very realistic POV for a survival world but his not an a**hole. Also like the supporting character. The pacing is good. Overall it’s good. The translator is charging for chapters on their site so it should be over 200 chapter. Can someone else pick this up at a quicker rate I need more.

Hot damn this is some good shit. It’s a mature and unique story. It takes admittedly cliched elements but executes them in a completely unique and well thought manner. The main character is a very mature and determined character with a clear goal and clear morals. He isn’t hypocritical, in fact he admits that his actions may seem hypocritical while understanding that he has no control over that.
The main character has a devouring ability, but that in and of itself isn’t what makes him so powerful. Rather it’s his... more>> capacity to plan for contingencies and plan for the future resolutely. His power does bring with it a lot of interesting growth that I don’t think will dissapoint. Also this story isn’t a lone wolf story, his enemies are so strong he realizes he needs competent comrades despite how strong he already is.

All in all, a highly recommended story with a prolific translation team. Definitely the creme of the crop of stories being translated right now. <<less

I usually only rate novels after 100+ chapters but since this one is very short at only 209 chapters i'll do it now...

It's a pretty interesting novel, not a new concept but still a very well executed story line. I would say it's a typical Koran weak to strong novel so you can expect the same trends: OP protag, no romance, lots of battles and a few others.

Overall it's a very good novel saddly it won't be getting a 5* because it does what every other koran novel does, even... more>> though it's at a really high level it's not something new. <<less

Not really a power fantasy trip, but there is that scratch sometimes.

There is some interesting plot twists on the traditional genre that can be turn on for some, not me personally, hence the 4 stars.

Translation is also very good so far.

Can certainly recommend it

Not really a big fan of the MC's abilities getting revealed right away, I was hoping that he could keep it a secret, I was interested at the start but there's some part that I didn't quite like. The one thing that really bothers me is his ability getting revealed but other than that its okay (for me anyways). I'll continue to read it later on and see if there's anything else good or bad.

A very grounded post apocalyptic story with the usual discrimination and survival. I actually like this, though I do hope there's no romance here. I'll give it five stars because it deserved it. Opinion may change in future chapters, but as of now, it's quite different from other novels so I'll take it.

Enjoying the novel so far, a bit too early to really tell. Pretty grounded and well written story.

Post apocalyptic survival. Unlike most novels of this type the humans are basically juuuuuust scraping by. Monsters are much stronger than usual. There is a relatively small number of relatively weak super heroes keeping humanity afloat. Our MC makes a living guiding the Awakeners to hunt monsters. Turns out (Dun Dun DUN) he awakens himself, and gains a potentially game breaking power.

Abilities shown so far are by and large on the low end.... more>> You get one in a variety of categories and it's like "physically stronger" or "imbue electricity" but people are still basically meat bags that die left and right.

The writing/translation are both good, there is a lot of detail and world building. Not much humor but not terribly dark either. MC is a loner but doesn't seem too extreme in his personality in any way yet. Which is nice!

I would recommend reading a couple of chapters and see if you like it. <<less

1.5 out of 5

Forgot to hit the stars before I posted...

Starts off very interesting, but you'll soon come to see the MC is incredibly bad at using his strengths. Frustratingly so.

If you've read other similar novels before, it's such an obvious waste of ability that you'll lose interest after like 50 chapters. I decided to give it a chance and got to chapter 105, but I can't go on anymore. The MC basically stops using his one advantage just because he's a little scared of attention, when he already has... more>> the attention of some of the most powerful people in the world... It's inane. <<less

It does not deserve the rating it has. Usually, the ratings are less than they deserve but not this time. This novel was a 3.5 at best. The writing was not that bad, and the translation was quite good tbh but the whole story and the ending were just a big, MEH. First of all the MC is not an antihero just his ability was. His ability usage was the worse I have ever seen in any novel ever, and they kept killing side characters for no reason. I have... more>> too many complaints about this novel. I only read it cause I had nothing else to read. Finished all the good ones on this website, and this is not one of them. <<less

The premise seems alright, but the plot convenience is glaring and annoying. The MC also seems to be losing the tiny bit of personality he had with every chapter. The side and background characters already get treated badly so I'm not looking forward to how that will develop. Dropped

Its ok but its long and slow. In other books 1 chapter = 3x in this one (same story just longer form).

The concepts in novel are nothing new, similar to post-apocalyptic novels but the MC focuses on relationships for 70% of the content making it main focus. All of relationships seems to focus around morality and trust.

A very post apocalyptic setting, where while the premise may seem cliche, it is executed pretty well. Although that does mean get ready to read blocks of world building, but most of the time it's rather relevant and lays the land pretty well.

The world setting gets fleshed out pretty quickly, describing the monsters and how society has developed in this post apocalyptic world, in what I feel is a rather probable way.

The protagonist isn't an absolute psychopath either, which in my book is a plus! Although for quite a while... more>> he is a loner, he eventually does get comrades in this dog-eat-dog-world that are rather likeable.

All in all I think this novel is highly underrated and I hope you enjoy this as much as I do if you decide to give it a read. <<less
