Chen Yan travels between worlds, ending up becoming an honorable prince in a medieval fantasy world. Yet this world was not quite as simple as he thought. Witches with magical powers abound, and fearsome wars between churches and kingdoms rage throughout the land.

Roland, a prince regarded as hopeless by his own father and assigned to the worst fief, spends his time developing a poor and backward town into a strong and modern city, while fighting against his siblings for the throne and absolute control over the kingdom. Join Roland as he befriends and allies with witches and, through fighting and even farming, pushes back invaders coming from the realm of evil.

It's great if you want a technology f*ck yeah! Story with a sprinkle of abusing magic to substitute for a lack of industrial infrastructure and blowing the sh*t out of enemies with superior dakka.

Whether you like this story or not depends on how you feel about the following problems:

  1. Although it starts off as an uplift story, about halfway through it throws in the 'Dream World' that shifts the tone quite a bit. It's kinda like watching a 4X game where a player is pursuing an extermination victory only to be forced down the line into a weird cultural victory path instead. 90% of the story is still uplift + extermination, and we do see things develop all the way to the limit, but as you get close to the end of the story you'll realize that the way the story ends has to go down the other path instead. Still, that's just the last 27 chapters that might be a bit uninteresting while most of the rest is good.
  2. As a related issue, this series could really use 30+ post-ending side story chapters to flesh out things and make the ending a bit more satisfying.
  3. The MC is challenged but never outright loses. That's fine if you're reading this mostly as a kingdom building story to see how challenges are overcome. Some people want to see the protagonist lose a bit along the way, but that doesn't seem to happen in 95% of popular webnovels anyway.
  4. There's a lot of chapters that focus on minor/side characters. This is more of a problem when you're reading it one chapter at a time, but not as much of an issue now that the complete story is translated and you can skim over parts you don't care about.
Overall, I'll give it a 5/5 because it mostly delivers what it promises. I was a bit disappointed that... more>> the whole 'Dream World' aspect didn't go the way I was anticipating it would as well as with the lack of side stories, but neither of those aspects is bad enough to worth reducing the score. <<less

This is THE definitive "bringing modern tech to modieval period" novel. In that aspect you probably can't find a novel that went deeper than this one. He'll talk about actual modern chemistry stuff among others. It's really too bad that the author didn't seem to be skilled enough to utilize all that premise into a cohesive plot. He has a bad habit of deliberately killing the suspense he worked hard to build up. This is also a perfect example of making a story more complex doesn't necessarily make it better... more>> as you'll find out halfway through the story.

All in all this is still a very good read despite having a very noticeable constant slide downwards quality wise. Fortunately there is like 1400 chapters so my advice is if you get to a point where the story starts to bore you you can just stop reading because the story isn't really going to get better down the line. <<less

Weak MC is very diffcult to make enjoyable to read since every single novel/manga is about a dude who is the strongest or has the potential to be the strongest but for me personally this is the only novel/manga that made a weak MC enjoyable to read. I only read the manga until ch.300 and surprisingly I never noticed or cared about his weakness until he was stabbed once but even after that I never really cared as much as I thought about it because his only weakness is in... more>> the psychical side but his intellect and his creations are more than enough to be a great substitue for that weakness and the setting of the novel/manga is in a world where people's strength is still ''normal'' compared to cultivation novels so psychical strength never really mattered that much. Still great novel/manga to read <<less

This is probably the best Chinese novel by far, at least for me.

Also, the amount of realism in this novel is quite refreshing in recent transmigration novels.

I feel that this novel represents the Chinese spirit of industrialization. I mean it places huge emphasis on rapid modernization and industrialization which is nice to see in supposedly medieval times.

Although the details of every piece of tech is too much sometimes which only contributes to word count (Only my personal opinion), it is definitely a great novel worth your time!!!

Too many characters, some give nothing to the plot, and I think it's a little bit too much for author to handle.

Rushed ending, I'm not satisfied with the conclusion, I think there should be more than that,

How would you feel like when One Piece end they'll be like :

... more>> "Hey guys we finally here, One Piece is in that island.." -> Abrupt 5 Years Time Skip -> Everyone is famous Pirate for getting One Piece, happily ever after, The end.

???

It's not masterpiece, it's not tr*sh, though I still read it to the end anyway. <<less

Third review! The first novel I read that wasn't on wuxiaworld, this one has a special place in my heart. I've given it 5 stars because, while not perfect, I enjoyed the entire ride and I often re-read it, though not completely which I'll get into.

I enjoyed the premise of the ML using his knowledge to improve the lives of his people and helping protect the witches. It's got really nice moral aspects which I appreciate. ML isn't a huge pe*vert or anything which is good, it keeps the romance pretty low-key. It's not a ridiculous harem, just Anna and Nightingale. It's very much a story based on plot and not character development which is important to keep in mind when it comes to the characters and their shortcomings.

The best part for me was the witches and Roland/ML's interactions with them in the early-middle part of the story. Later on, after the war against the Church, things start to drag quite a bit and I think it got away from what made the story fun and enjoyable to read which was Roland's interactions with people and the slice-of-life elements. It leaned a bit too hard into the demons/God/Dream world timeline and I feel like those parts were never quite as enjoyable as the early-middle parts. The ending was quite confusing and, to be honest, if you told me this was how the story would've ended when I was first reading it I would've been so confused.

[collapse]

Overall, I'm giving it a 5/5 review. It's not perfect by any means but it's a 5/5 story in terms of enjoyment to me and nostalgia definitely impacts that. I re-read many parts of the story still and I do recommend giving it a shot if you get a chance. Not for everyone but it's worth reading to me. <<less

I started reading this after checking out the hyped out comments.

Unlike what the reviews state, the MC ain't even that intelligent, and also till now, there has been no character development.

He can't even use his brain for simple things but builds the more complex ones?

... more>> He isn't even that ruthless, which means that he can be a good lord but never a king.

How is it that he can't even think about obstructing the enemy and then developing the town? He could have made some distractions and then his town could safely develop without any issues from the enemy. This is even after he has some kind of small intelligence group and has experienced the attacks of the enemy.

Also he could have made an assasination organization which could bring lots of income and also to deal with the enemy at the same time.

There are many many more things he could have done.

Like he doesn't even care about the general situation of the world, which even the most brain dead MCs from other novels do at the very start. <<less

As other have stated, RtW has it's problems. The protagonist is kinda bland, personality wise. Although he is a mechanic engineer, his wealth of knowledge extends to chemistry, agriculture and a lot of other topics, to the point that this feels like Dr Stone in a fantasy medieval world. But if you can lift your suspension of disbelief about these matters, this is an awesome LN.

The titular "witches" are persecuted young woman, that one day awaken to a power between a myriad of possible powers: earth manipulation, fire manipulation, transforming... more>> into an animal, superstrenght and so on. There isn't quite a "soft magic system" with magic formulas and so on, they're much more like X-Men. The main character, the chinese mechanic engineer, one day dies in our world and reincarnates in the body of a good-for-nothing prince of the medieval fantasy kingdom, discovers the existence of witches and decides to free them of persecution so they help him with his plans. The end result is Doctor Stone meets X-Men and enlist their help to weld steel, make civil engineering projects and factories. It's greatly addictive and entertaining in that sense, and although a lot of characters become relegated to the background, the main focus of this is the kingdom building, it is a blast just reading and imagining what is Roland going to do next. Not a fan of the church chapters, tho. <<less

The reason I gave it 3 stars is because I dont really like why the MC and other male characters are so normal so bland. I was expecting he or the other males would atleast have a unique ability like good at swordsmanship, marksmanship that can face of against witches by themselves but no they are so normal that you would forget em cause the novel is about more girl power although im not against females having power or what not but what I dont like is that the gender... more>> is not balanced to the point them females can live off without the males in the story even enemies rely on those females not even having a notable male enemy in the battlefield only underlings, another reason is too much explanation about atom etc its like youre reading books from school that I need to skip past it and whats more what I dont like is the pov of enemies although its good that author is explaining reasons thru pov of enemies im not a fan of 5 ch just for enemies to have highlights I literally skip over them id skip 4-5 ch cause I dont like em. But still its a good read I wont say its literally bad cause I like some parts of the novel like wars and kingdom building like im looking forward to it but still if only MC and the other males are a bit unique and gender balanced id give it a five star. I suggest this if you like kingdom/army building and dont have any stuff to read but I warn you guys this novel is tipped to girl power if you dont like that then dont read it cause males in the story are so bland. <<less

Great writing, story building, and fight scenes, BUT the ending was so lacking compared to the build up of the whole story.

I'm not saying the whole story was ruined because of the ending (let's be honest more than half of Chinese novels have no ending at all or the worst endings ever that it makes you wish you hadn't wasted your time reading it) but even with the ending wrapping everything up, it felt rushed, and I didn't get the romantic scenes with Nightingale (my favorite character) that I wanted,... more>> which I felt was really freaking s*upid considering the build up between Roland and her.

The ending did make it possible for the author to write a 2nd story continuing where this novel left off, but the chances of that happening are pretty much impossible. Authors always seem to get bored of their story and want to move on to something new for some reason. <<less

The way the ML infuses the science and magic together to get a way to upgrade witches' skills also good.

BUT!

I was disappointed with the ending. Very much that I regretted not listening to my heart to take a peek of the ending before I read to 807 chapters : (

Release that Witch is an amazing story that I would consider to be almost a masterpiece. It is a story about an engineer that is transported into the world of witches that uses his knowledge along with the power of the witches to go through technological developments throughout history. It is filled with amazing fleshed-out characters and a world that is amazingly fleshed out.

In the middle of the story, I was criticizing it a bit in my head for its lack of drama in a way. Certain scenes could be... more>> lengthened and improved to make it more exciting or increase the stakes, but then I realized that wasn't the point of story. This is a story about big ideas and technological developments and this story did go through a lot of them. This made me respect the story more because it really knows that it does best and fulfills it all the way. Unfortunately, it falls a bit at the end with crazy plots which doesn't make quite a bit of sense which is a common problem with these long stories but is still better than most endings out there.

I would gladly suggest this to my kid one day. <<less

I finished this novel about 1-2 years ago so my memory is hazy at points. It's quite obvious the author has read "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (published in 1889!).

RTW is a wonderfully crafted story with good pacing and has very likeable characters. It intelligently applies technology and societal developments from modern day to a medieval society where a limited number of people with individualized magic exist. The only downside is that the ending is rather deus ex machina and is rather rushed but it is still worthy... more>> of a 5 star rating as a web novel. The only other web novel I would rate as 5 star is Gate (Thus the JSDF Fought Here).

The reason for this review is that I found this novel to be excellent, and the story development for the most part to be well thought out. Here are some spoilerish details:

Spoiler

Roland's first 3 technology advancements are actually cement, firearms and steam engine which actually makes a fair amount of sense. The cement for building his wall and housing is often overlooked in the types of stories, and the steam engine essentially drives industrialization and allows him to mine more efficiently as well as to machine more parts for things he wants to construct (like boring gun/cannon barrels). The firearms are actually fairly limited in the beginning because he can't mass produce them, and his saltpeter supply is limited. Saltpeter is already used in the world as a food cooling agent (kind of like the Romans in RL). Not sure where he obtains the sulfur from -presumably it's mined like like iron. He actually moves on to import saltpeter later through the merchants until they're cut off, and then he starts producing his own saltpeter farm (using the manure/urine extraction method I believe).

It's interesting to see that while he has some basic knowledge in other science fields like chemistry he's far from all capable, and end up recruiting alchemists in the world, teaching them basic chemistry and having them research developments like creating a primer/explosive and ethanol. These endeavors often take month to pan out even with the assistance of the witches. You can also see examples of his lack of knowledge in metallurgy where he ends up having the witches experiment with different alloys and record their properties (one of them smelts the metals together, the other one breaks them down to their individual components). There's some level of detail here but probably nothing beyond high school or freshman college level type of references. While I can't follow it 100% I vaguely understand the concepts, and appreciate the effort as opposed to some hand waving like "he mixed random chemicals together and voila! explosive primers".

In terms of production shortcuts the 3 primary witches are Anna for her smelting and material cutting, Lucia for breaking down material to constituent parts and Soraya for making plastic/polymer coatings. Over time they contribute greatly to the advancement and production of Greycastle. Healthcare is handled by Nana for injuries and Lily for anti-bacteria/viral applications. Agriculture by leaf via her plant hybridization along with irrigation and fertilizer advances. Overall it feels like the witches are enablers of technological development as opposed to them snapping their fingers and just making things happen.

Overall in terms of world building I felt that the pace and progression were quite reasonable. After surviving the first winter with his walls and guns he moves on enrich the lives of the citizens of border town by improving their food and housing, implements an education system to raise worker skills to drive his industrialization efforts, starts a propaganda campaign to shift public sentiment, overhauls the economic situation (widespread employment, fixed grain prices, luxury goods for those employed people with disposable income) and fights off an invasion.

It sort of builds up in scale from there until he's king of the continent where upon he realizes the literal world threatening demons, and the secrets of the Church whose original purpose was to fight the demons but has since become rather corrupt even though it adheres to the original purpose. This part features some interesting magic vs magic confrontations as well as tech vs magic confrontations. There was a time travel/cross world holy grail of sorts that was nice to see (i.e. what's one of the most destructive weapons known to modern man created "simply" by smashing together some special isotopes at high speeds to reach critical mass?).

The Dream World component is a little mixed for me. It was nice that the Taquila witches were able to experience modern day life in a reverse mirror scenario, and the KFC scene was great. The acquisition of martial powers by Roland however felt very odd as although it was cool, it just didn't fit his character personality and it seemed the author realized this and abandoned that plan. Originally I was expecting a Matrix Reloaded moment when Roland realized he had powers in the real world but that didn't happen. I'm disappointed but also relieved that it didn't happen.

The ending was rather deus ex machina, and while there was a prologue of sorts, I really wished it covered more of the characters that appeared in the series as I wondered about how the other witches were doing. It just felt really rushed. It would be nice to see a gaiden/side stories featuring the other characters.

[collapse]

The second reason is that I found some of the review comments to be really... odd.

Spoiler

There seems to be a number of people who believe that a mechanical engineer would be unable to design a simple gun, steam engine, plumbing or have basic knowledge of related science fields like chemistry, material science, etc. Similarly people make the claim that the author is "pretentious" to show off his knowledge of various details of chemical reactions, knowledge of the periodic table, mathematics, etc. that Roland couldn't possibly have as a "normal" person.

To quote her Holiness: "Anata Obaka?"

First of all I'm not a mechanical engineer, and I was not educated in the China. I do personally know people with what's equivalent to a electrical engineering degree from China very well though. Science and engineering has been highly respected and sought after in the last 40 or so years in China, and traditional education in China is super rigorous with lots of memorization. It's completely believable for people to be able to remember advanced math, the majority of elements in the periodic table and be able to understand the mechanism behind common mechanical devices even decades after being exposed to them in school.

I would imagine as mechanical engineer, that making a basic flintlock muzzle loader is trivial. In fact I would imagine a high school student with some interest in science can create one or at least a matchlock fairly easily given the materials. It's just a metal tube plugged on one end, stuffed with black powder, wadding and a lead ball with a touch hole to ignite it. I say this as a firearm owner -although I don't have any black powder weapons or muzzle loaders because they are very smoky and bothersome to operate. I've never actually made black powder before (mostly because I can't find a cheap/easy source of sulfur -saltpeter is fairly cheap/easily obtained) but I have made rocket candy before. Hmm... seems Amazon sells sulfur fairly cheaply but in 10lb bags...

Basic steam engines are actually fairly simple in design. Anyone who's looked at a How Stuff Works book as a child or teen could probably figure out the operation. It's a little more advanced than a hand pump in design but as a mechanical engineer you would probably need to understand some common devices like a steam engine, a combustion engine, electrical motor, etc. because they are so well known. (I was tempted to buy a Sterling engine a while back but I resisted.)

So basically this is not some super specialized knowledge. It would be entirely expected for someone mechanically inclined to be able to create such devices with a human smelter/CNC router (a.k.a Anna). To suggest otherwise is rather silly.

On the topic of "Guns are bad"... In a world where demonic mutated creatures routinely kill people, and neighboring cities send their soldiers after you... guns don't seem very bad... in fact they seem great. Plus note that Roland doesn't actually sell guns to random people. Some of you might ask "What about accidental gun death?" to which I reply: most of the weapons Roland creates are (presumably hammer fired) revolvers, bolt action rifles or (presumably hand cranked) machineguns. You'd really have to go out of your way to accidentally shoot yourself or others after some basic training. To put it another way: you are probably just as likely to fall on your sword and stab yourself.

On the topic of "The Church is always evil"... Well, when any organization brainwashes you not to think critically, and just believe they're the good guys and everyone against them is evil... I suppose the other common group that fall into that category are facists.

On the topic of "The witches are cheats"... That's sort of like reading a superhero novel and shouting "I can't believe there are people with extraordinary powers that normal people don't possess! What kind of story is this!?" Having said that, the witches' powers are useful but in general but are not game changers without a fair amount of work on Roland's part. There's usually a fair amount of experimentation, exploration and prep work to bring out their real effectiveness.

On the topic of "There's no diplomacy"... Most of the leaders of other nations he encounters are already quite hostile to him in a "there can be only one" way, and Roland is not a politician by any measure. In fact many people feel that he's not a very good king by the common definition as he doesn't monopolize power. He is however a decent leader, and eventually ends up cooperating with two major forces that were very hostile to him.

On the topic of "There's no relationship progress or why was the harem suddenly dropped?"... He's a workaholic that died in his previous life. In this one he's initially in a Sword of Damocles situation where he's liable to get killed if he doesn't develop fast enough, and later it's a race to save the world. He's kind of busy trying to you know... survive. As for why his "relationship" with Lightning didn't progress, the answer is there was no relationship. She's a young girl who sees him as a father figure of sorts -not a romantic partner. As for Nightingale, that's obviously a spoiler.

One of the best LN I have found so far, fell in love with the witches, all of them have a good character development, this LN has not cultivation or pills like all most tr*sh CN novels have currently.

Clever MC, loving witches, good world building.

MC use his previous knowledge to improve the well-being of the citizens of his town, creates weapons to fight against the enemies that have been hunting the witches.

There is a manga adaptation with +200 chapthers currently.

As a CN novel? 10/10.

Compared to JP and KR novels of the same genre? 7/10. Unlike most CN novels, this has a story that isn't repetitive, it actually has a goal, there isn't 50 women that follow the MC, and best of all, it isn't a cultivation novel. Minor characters show up multiple times and some actually show a bit of character development, although most of them only get like, 10-15 chapters and they don't really affect the main story.

Now here are some of my critiques.
Spoiler
    1. Every time a witch (or anyone really), comes to the city, the author states again and again how there's no discrimination in the city. (This is a personal gripe)
    2. The nobles in the beginning of the story seemed eager to give up their titles and land but in the latter half of the story, the nobles were so unwilling to give up their titles and land to the extent that they would join hands with the demons
    3. MC is never in really in danger, although he shouldn't really be since he's supposed to be the guy commanding from way in the back
    4. Nobody important dies. Literally none of the main characters ever die and for the one person that did die, they got revived somehow
    5. At the end, the MC literally talks to god and somehow convinces him not to destroy the world. And he becomes god. Somehow.
    6. last 20 chapters or so were sorta shit. Like, they talk about gravity, and existence, and sh*t that makes no sense, most of which have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING
[collapse]

TL;DR- It's good, but it just completely falls apart at the end

I can forgive the rushed final and other mistakes. But not write a few extra caps ending the side characters was the worst mistake this novel makes.

For example the marskman Daniel who says he likes the greenhaired witch I wanted to know how that ended. It was like after almost 1500 caps all side characters were a waste of time reading them. Instead we had the two very detailed and boring magic films.

An Isekai where Chinaman Chen Yan's soul transfers to, the already grown up, European-esque nobleman Roland Wimbledon, is the kind of Isekai transfer I usually don't like. However the world building here does a phenomenal job of making up for it. Especially when dealing with the very nature of witches, the Battle of Divine Will and the various other mysteries of the world. Where Low Fantasy meets Science, creating a fascinating element to the Industrial Revolution and the ongoing effects it has on the people's way of life. Especially with... more>> how it often switches perspectives for other character's Slice of Life moments.

Honestly it makes this one of the, if not the best Kingdom Building WN. However those Slice of Life moments also slow down the pacing a bit too much. Then a new realm is later introduced to over complicate the story and trivialize the earlier experimentation & ingenuity. And a shame that Roland, although ridiculously smart and proactive, has a dry personality. A stark contrast from all the amazing side characters. <<less

This was definitely one of my favorite reads. Out of all the novels I read my favorites usually include not only the character changing but the character also advancing that around him like his territory, technology, etc. Or maybe it would be described as the world changing alongside the character. Not only that but the story itself overall left an impact on me. The suspenseful moments and cliff hangars kept me up at night, the constant technological breakthroughs allowed me to feel like I was witnessing humanity develop, the story... more>> showing different soldiers perspective allowed me to witness the story from different angles and get a clearer picture of war from the frontlines. Sadly it came to an end after many chapters.

Edit- I really enjoyed how the novel revolves around knowledge which made me feel like I was understanding things more as I read through the chapters. <<less

Spoiler alert. I read it like 2016/17 when VolareNovels first started translating up to when WebNovel took over. But even now, I'm still debating whether to finish it or not.

I like the idea of witches, devils, war of divine wills, church and how witches evolve or the devil hierarchy. I like all that concept and the plot setting. There was so much Er Mu could build from it. The world building would have been excellent if the he did not overdo it. By 800 chapters, Roland can confidently delve in... more>> the field of engineering, construction, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and so on even though he does not have power, he's basically OP. But the author was not satisfied with it and also gave Roland the Dream World thing which kinda ruined it for me.

As for the antagonists, he constructed it in a good way. For example the church, they even have the Judge Army, God's Punishment Army, virg*ns, Popes, and the devils have Eye demons, Mad demons, Lord of Hell, Senior demon etc. The history also is very well written. Therefore, I kinda expected high as the event to war builds up. But once the battle is on, they did not put up much challenge. The most anticipated battle events eventually became unsatisfactory. I just could not take how such a beautiful masterpiece is slowly ruined. I had to stop reading around the time Ashes evolved. There are so much more to say like how bland the FMC is or how Roland basically has no opposition in his government (like how China government is now). Everyone is like a puppet that just follow everything he wants. That also ruined it for me. So I don't know to score this one. The concept is really good but there are so many questionable plot holes. <<less
