A bookworm who had finally found a job as a librarian at a university was sadly killed shortly after graduating from college.

She was reborn as Myne, the daughter of a soldier in a world where the literacy rate is low and books were scarce. No matter how much she wanted to read, there were no books around. What is a bookworm to do without any books? Make them, of course.

Her goal is to become a librarian! So that she may once again live surrounded by books, she must start by making them herself.

The MC could be better but the writer did that on purpose. She improves as the story goes on. The world building, well, so far just a little walled city and its immediate surroundings like the forest, is why I'm giving this story 5 stars. I've read so many novels but I don't remember ever reading anything as realistic as this.

While most isekai stories are fantasy stories in a historical fantasy world, this story is a fantasy story in a historical fantasy world. The depiction of an European style town in the Middle Ages is the best I've seen in any novel so far and it's depicted from the viewpoint of a poor commoner. Of course there are twists and fantasy elements to it, but the general lifestyle and conditions are rather well depicted.

As most people have pointed out, the MC is more of a book fetishist than... more>> a book worm and indeed doesn't quite act reasonably at all times. However, I found that to be secondary as the overall plot development is still pretty much on point, at least after the MC stops crying after the books and actually starts doing stuff.

A rather serious tale that has more akin to traditional novels than it does to Japanese web novels. Starts off kind of weak, but picks itself up and barely manages to earn 5 stars from me. <<less

The novel is pretty different from others from the reincarnated genre. I've seen reviews saying how she is so spoiled, how she only has useless knowledge, how she acts craizly because she doesnt have books. Firstly concerning the last one - I think we can safely assyme that at least 50% of readers on this site would go absolutely crazy if we didnt have acces to books/novels/games on a daily basis - I know at least I would. Second how many of us actually has any useful knowledge about making... more>> things without the help of machines? And about being spoiled - I believe she is like that because a) she meshed with a 6 (!) year old and b) because she was a little bit spoiled book otaku in her last life. Really, she is not that bad.

Now about the actual book. There is character growth and the characters are not one dimensioned, which is pretty nice. The MC doesn't get everything right from the first time. She grows, she learns. The same can be said about those around her. The only vice for me is that the story has a pretty slow pace and the translator (through he is a good one) is also slow. <<less

In one word, this series is disappointing. I've only read to where the translations stopped, but also went to the Fandom Wiki to see the rest of the plot so know a bit more. The issues I have with this series differ from what some other people have mentioned, so wanted to leave a review to give another viewpoint.

The translation is passable but has too many issues to be considered decent. TL couldn't decide how they wanted to spell multiple names, including the MC's. While it's fine for a TL... more>> to decide to change the spelling of names, they need to go back and fix them in earlier chapters too. There are also incorrectly loaded chapters, so in certain sections near the end, it skips some very important stuff and you only see the aftermath.

A notable issue for me is that the author wants the MC to be a minor too much, there's no excuse other than the author being a lolicon. MC starts as physically 6 and the series end when she's physically 14 I think? There's too much emphasis on the MC being petite, child-like, younger than she looks, frail, delicate, has to constantly be carried around by male characters, etc.

Spoiler

The author seems to really want romance since MC is engaged a few times and there are plenty of romance flags. Even if she's mentally an adult, it still feels weird. She even loses 2 years of physical growth by being poisoned and put into a coma which doesn't help. It's fine to have petite/delicate/etc MCs, but author seems to be going to too many lengths to emphasize MC is loli. It would also be bad if she was written as being too mature looking for her age (like big b**bs or whatever) but the answer is still to age up via time skips or something which the author is apparently allergic to doing.

The fact she gets together with Ferdinand from my understanding is even worse. Ferdinand is constantly referred to as her mentor/guide/patron and even pseudo-legal guardian in a sense. Teacher/student couples can be interesting but there are lines that can't be crossed which are here. Even if Ferdinand knows about her first life, the fact is that an adult man over 20 meets and guides a 6-year-old to 14 and feels a romantic attraction to her including her physical state. Even if she's mentally older, that doesn't change the fact it feels disgusting.

Just because nobility in irl medieval times got married very young, fantasy is fantasy for a reason. It doesn't have to follow any historical trends unless the author writes it. Plus the MC's modern sensibilities didn't kick in any?? Even if Ferdinand thinks it's normal, that doesn't mean she should. I've only read about this in synopsis/spoilers, but have no reason to doubt it and am extremely disappointed to see it.

[collapse]

The pacing sucks. It feels like the author wrote a list of major plot points down and followed them without adding anything for transitions. It's like listening to a song with only lyrics and no instrumental transitions. It might not be bad but it's boring because it's only 1 note and too abrupt since things aren't connected well.

Spoiler

The merchant arc is about 1 year, and the priest arc is also around 1 year. I get that she only could start the priest arc after her baptism but like... the author could have just made the baptism age older or something. And there's no time to see what some of this stuff actually does to the society she's in.

Her big thing for a long time was making paper but the second she makes paper it's no longer a big deal. There's a little dispute with the people who make parchment but then it's resolved in the next chapter. They also keep talking about how she's able to sell the paper to get more funds but to who??? The author talks more about the impact of the hairpins on society and that people are buying those versus anything about paper. MC is the only one mentioned who uses the paper she makes to make picture books later on.

[collapse]

When MC is around, all the adult's IQ lowers. We know the MC is an adult reincarnator. But everyone else sees this random sickly 6-year-old who has only rarely left the house and always go along with her ideas/etc no matter how much doubt they have in the beginning for no reason.

Spoiler

For example, Benno, a merchant in his mid or late 20's looks at 2 random 6-year-old children he's met like 1 hour ago who say they can make him paper and goes "yeah sure lol I'll spend (the equivalent of a few thousand dollars) helping you guys get set up". Like??? At that point, they had nothing to show him except conviction but he still decided to become their patron. He even says when they succeed, something along the lines of "wow I didn't think it was possible" so it's clear he wasn't 100% convinced from the start.

[collapse]

But my major grievance is the overall thematic shifts. It goes from being about invention/trade to religion/nobility politics to court drama combined with school life. Like what the f*ck? I wanted to cough up blood. If the author wanted to do a magical school nobility drama (which seems to be over 60% of the whole series plot) then why didn't they start closer to it and spend so much time developing her as a merchant... if you like the direction of where the series starts, don't expect it to stay there.

This series isn't unlike the typical xianxia where the MC conquers 1 realm and then moves onto a bigger pond before conquering that one, rinse and repeat until becoming an omniscient god. But that honestly doesn't fit this series. Maybe it's just because I liked the merchant arc, an arc that only exists to make sure the reader knows how smart and special she is where she establishes her connections with non-nobles.

Spoiler

Shifting "realms" as it does also makes MC's feelings feel cheap. The MC loves the family she's made in this new life and is willing to stay with them and die versus trying to find a way to live that seems like a dead end. Then she gets adopted by a noble and starts living that life and they're suddenly irrelevant to the plot. I get there are socioeconomic barriers but really??? The whole reason she sets down the nobility path is because she needs help managing her condition.

MC discovers a method to negate it that's not related to nobility. The MC had her death faked to become a noble. Why didn't she have her death faked and go back to being a commoner? It's stated multiple times that she's very business savvy (despite being naive, oblivious, etc in general) and she's pretty rich/well-connected at that point. She did have the option to negotiate going back to her previous life but didn't. She's written as an oblivious protag type but it's stated multiple times the things she'll go berserk over are her family/friends and books. Guess it's only when their lives are in danger that she'll do it.

Not to mention, Lutz, the first one to learn her secret, who has an exclusive contract with her and her inventions so that she's tethered to her family, her closest friend becomes a non-entity unless the author needs the MC to do merchant things. The author was definitely playing around with Lutz being a romantic interest. I'm guessing they realized that would be kinda messed up, and decided the best thing to do was to get rid of him by just not talking about him. It would leave a bad taste in my mouth if they got together due to mental age, so I can't say I mind him becoming irrelevant from a romantic angle. But it really felt like a lot of loose ends were left by leaving him to collect dust.

[collapse]

TL;DR...I liked the premise, how things started, some of the characters, and the way things were handled so 2 stars. But -3 stars because the plot direction was a headache for me and the author shafted so many leads I thought were interesting & the translation was subpar. This is the type of novel people who are fine with slow plots/builds and have an interest in noble political intrigue/drama since that's the real meat of the story versus how it starts off. <<less

For someone who's going to joint the workforce she's unbearably naive. Though she's kind of an oddball to begin with so it's still in the acceptable range. Though her decision in many case rub me in the wrong way.

Spoiler

Why did she decided that letting Benno adopt Lutz without his own parent consent is a good idea? Even if it was Lutz's decision she didn't count his parents' feeling into consideration. On their side it was like some evil merchant sweet talk their own son into some shady business.

[collapse]

She's selfish, yes, arrogant, yes, ignorant, even more yes, and she have been growing throughout the series, which annoys me even move because it's actually consistent writing. Though I don't think she fits as the main character. She's lacking something to appeal to the audience, the "I am the main character" vibe aside from her reincarnation bonus.

But in the end I don't think she needed it. The world around her did that job for her already. So let's give this novel a try.

On a side note, I would prefer that this story is being written in the perspective of Lutz, with him being the narrator or something along that line. Or even better, in third person. The world building is just too good for it to be written in first person. Or different POV for example, no, that's a bad idea, it would just end up being an info dump. <<less

This is a rather good reincarnation isekai about a girl 'inventing' items from the modern world to sell for profit. The tone is positive and happy but manages to be realistic and not cartoonish. The author does a great job of addressing the lifestyle and useful items for the girl to sell.

My one complaint is the ages. The girl and her best friend are supposed to be around 6 years old but they are way too smart. The girl is acceptable because she was an adult when she died but... more>> the boy has no excuse. That is my pet peeve though and it is easy to ignore. No action, just trading, inventing, and cooking. If that sounds appealing, give it a shot. <<less

I've started reading this after watching the two seasons of the anime. It just blew my mind, as the world building is many steps above most Isekais I've read before. The narrative focuses much more on the character interactions, it's very refreshing to read a LN focused on commerce, religion and societal issues rather than combat.

Spoiler

While this is all fine and good, on the second half of the story, whem Myne becomes a noble and goes to the Magic School, it devolves into a more generic Isekai setting. While Rozemyne has a lot of health issues, she just gets more and more overpowered and we see the traditional peanut gallery being like "oh, her magic is so huge, derp". It's still a good read, but this is a blemish on an otherwise great Isekai story.

[collapse]

It's a really refreshing LN, both from the female POV, the (mostly) wholesome characters and character development and relaxed setting. <<less

Everyone is complaining about Maine's personality, but I found her on par with most of the absent-minded but obsessively hyper-focused grad students I've met, so I would say she is a believable character, though not terribly likable. It genuinely doesn't occur to her that she is being annoying or burdensome, because she doesn't know the effort required, or doesn't realize other people aren't as obsessed, so they would find the same task onerous.

This is less of a quest for one obsessed bibliophile seeking books, and more of journey on how... more>> an obsessive bibliophile discovers she even better at other things and learns there are things which matter more to her, though her original interest is kept on the back burner as the fire to keep her going.

What they do well:

World building. Just incredibly rich and detailed, with multiple class systems, cultures, practices, and environments. It's not a very likable world, (their class system is enraging,) but it is a full and detailed one.

Maine, the MC, fails a lot when she tries to make stuff. Things don't work, things explode, things are utter failures. She is a normal human, when it comes to remembering how things are made. Instead, she relies on expert craftsmen. She describes and details what she's thinking, and then relies on people with significantly more experience and skill than her, to figure out how to make the actual thing. It even goes into how difficult it is to simoly make the things necessary to make the things.

Maine tends to act as more of a consultant, than anything. People mostly pay her to for her random thought dumps.

I love her family, who accept she's a bit cuckoo, but go along with it and love her anyways, and how she starts viewing them as her real family in turn.

The characters in general tend to be wonderful, complex, and interesting.

Weak areas:

It seems like it is far, far more fun for the author to write the easy "genius inventing" moments where Maine astounds the others by casually coming up with a new idea (usually food), than the trickier plot-advancing scenes. As such, when anything seems about to get too complicated, it steps back and we watch her come up with another idea and run around to various shops making it happen, while we sit and wait, kind of bored, wondering what happened with that one character, or that one plan, or what is happening at home.

It always picks the plot reigns back up in a bit, once the author decides where they're going, but this does mean the story is longer than it needs to be, and some things get dropped or forgotten by the wayside. It drifts and takes the long (loooong) way around.

She becomes more and more Mary Sue (by degrees) as things go on. It's getting a bit "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". I also don't care when they start detailing how much money she's making or how much things cost.

The author doesn't seem to know the difference between a merchant, a venture capitalist, and a manufacturer, or how some of the inventions actually work (like, metal nails in a steamer basket, or using what sounds like salt scrub in your hair, which would be horrible, and while she knows enough that special ink must be used in printing, she doesn't know what that ink is actually like or that a very specific and special metal alloy is required for casting type letters).

Merchants generally do not set up factories, or require their apprentices to invent things. They're resale.

You will have to suspend belief that a wealthy, intelligent merchant decided to give two six year olds a cart blanche budget and a year to undertake the immense project of revolutionizing an entire industry. Then has the start up capital and mental capacity to do it again the every month as she comes up with more businesses.

And there are times when you'll be like, really, no one's gonna...? Like, you have been obsessed with having a book, but still take seasons to get around to making one after you went through that trouble? You're horrified by the orphans, but not the "flowers"? Or, you've just been told magic is real-- is no one going to try to use it?

Still, I enjoyed it a lot and binged the entire thing. <<less

A really casual and a slice of life novel. The manga didn't give justice, to be honest. This one could have been another sweetness and lightning kind of anime but was reduced in terms of quality and such. The novel is much more focused on the protagonist. The author though didn't really give a depth characterization on her nor to any character that exist in this novel. It was too casual. The author just made this casually to the point that it lacked depth. But people like it, as y'all... more>> could see. It was okay in the beginning until the author just decided to make the protagonist be a complete genius that is not really a genius. If you know what I mean. She just started being the boss of anyone and everyone. The story could have been exploited a bit. It was a good plot but wasn't given justice by the author. A shame. <<less

I will have to say that I love how unique this MC is in the way that she's weak, and she actually stays that way. No OP power-ups nor miraculous cures/opportunities. What could be considered the MC's golden finger, is actually turned less OP due to her still Japanese mindset/naivety. When compared to other kids her age, for the most part, she is very mature and pretty OP mentally, but when she tries to negotiate with adults, she always ends up getting taken advantage of. However, in the deals she... more>> makes, she doesn't completely lose out, it's just that she doesn't make as much as she could as she is unaware of how much her knowledge is worth.

The pacing of this novel is really slow due to her physical constitution as well as her unawareness to the worth of her knowledge.
Spoiler

a lot of the development of products, or work get put on hold because she fall sick with fever so often.

[collapse]
I can see how it can get a little frustrating since you just want the plot to hurry along but because she's constantly getting sick, a lot of things get dragged on.

As much as I love this character setting, I don't think I can give a full 5 stars due to the fact that I feel that the plot hasn't really picked up and it's already 74 chapters in. It may very well start picking up later on, but will have to wait to see. I will probably put this story on-hold for now while I wait for my next phase for isekai stories to appear. It's currently a little too slow paced for me while I'm not in the mood for isekai. <<less

I love this novel. First, hats off for the writing and the translation, they all did an amazing job.

This story is really different from your common isekai novel, and while the MC was irritating at the beginning by how selfish she acted (I really wanted to smack her head) and I totally agree that she should be called a book-fetishist instead of a bookworm, she slowly changes for the better. I enjoyed discovering the other characters as well, MC's family is really adorable especially Tuuli (she is the MC's big... more>> sister).

The plot, while not very surprising, is accompanied by elements that do not let you feel bored, and I felt that I wanted to see more as I read.

One of the fact that I truly liked was how this novel describes the lives of the commoners at the feudal era, their relationship with their neighbors, how they pass winter, what do the children do when their parents are working, etc... I'm not knowledgeable about that so I don't know if it's really how they lived at the time (with some fiction added in the story), or if it's just the author imagining and inventing all of it, but that really interested me.

Some moments are really moving, like when MC learned about her illness from the other girl, talked about it with her family, and when they started crying, my heart nearly broke.
Spoiler

And when MC woke up in the middle of the night to see her dad (who was the only one brave enough to not cry at the time she explained about her illness) drinking alcohol and shedding his tears silently as to not wake the others up, my heart finally broke. With just that moment I think that it was worth reading this novel

[collapse]

Even if I love this story I don't think that I will continue reading it. I just didn't like what happened at the church when she was participating in her 7yo ceremony. It's like someone just poured cold water onto me when I was feeling excited. She was doing well and all but she just suddenly acted selfish again like at the beginning. I was really surprised.

Spoiler

When I think about it again, it's relatively understandable how she acted, because it has been a long time since she's last seen a book but still, I didn't like what happened.

[collapse]

Maybe others will like it but, I didn't like the events at the ceremony and I don't think that I will like the story that will follow these events so I stopped myself from reading further. Still I think it was a good read...

One last thing, I think it would have been a lot more interesting if there were a bit more of Lutz's or Tuuli's POV. <<less

At the start, I'd say the MC is a selfish body-swapper... and then the author made her someone who can invent things yet she remembers from her past life conversely, it also mentioned several times that she's a girl who easily forget things and relied too much on her notepad in the previous life.

There are parts that can make you cry and more parts where you'll most likely want to flick her forehead or squeeze her skull with your knuckles many times over.

The acc to some spoilers it'll later turn... more>> into magical girl Maine. I initially rate it 4 or even go with 4.5 for not leaning on romance but because it turned out into same OP reincarnator, I'll give it a 3/5 <<less

For the first few chapters of AoaB, I am quite annoyed on how selfish the MC can be.

Like how troublesome and pretty useless she is to her family and to the people around her. But then she still wont even control herself and think about others before she make a mess...

Then I have come to like that peculiarity of her and those ideas of her eventually paid off for everyone and everything so it is satisfying to see her being productive for once.

And now Ill try to read the MTL... more>> because I cant wait for the update! <<less

I will admit I tried to get into it and I simply couldn't so I am bias to this story. That said; it's not a bad novel simply... slow. From what I've read it's quite slow and relaxed as a slice of life novel, that goes about Myne's daily life.

characterization wise; she's your pretty typical isekai protag where she's more advanced than everyone else because she's a transmigrator. She then stuns everyone with her brilliance as per formula. Her bookworm background is the hand wave for things like shampoo,... more>> making papyrus, etc. but some are a stretch (she's the only one to try and eat 'bird feed' and create pancakes???? Really???)

With it's lack of grand adventure and dramatic happenings, a lot of it relies on whether or not you like Myne, at least at the beginning part of it. If you're new to the isekai world you might enjoy it, but if you're a veteran it's the same old story. <<less

A great story that showcases a girl from a very poor family growing up to be someone important even though there are many factors that forced to fight against her. But then again her love for modern things including books makes it a worthwhile read. Too bad the translator has decided to abandon this.

Just a small warning, like the previous reviewers, this novel is not for anyone. So you might get bored really easily if you're not interested in her daily life.

It's an ok read, the beginning is fairly rough but does get way more interesting later on. The reason why its so rough at the start is the MC's personality is fairly irrating as with a lot of MC in JP LN. I wonder if only people with zero self awareness get transmigrated/reincarnated to another world. What really kill it for me for a while is just how much of absolute child the MC is. I mean she is like 6 years old but she is suppose to be have... more>> the mine of a 22 year old but aside from her knowledge she acts just like a 6 year old...

However once it get over her acting so childish all the time and things progress it gets lot more interesting as other stuff is introduced. The novel does really move too slow at the start and focus way too much on really boring and unimportant stuff. Which such because by the time things pick up I reached the end of the current translation. <<less
