I Became The Stepmother of My Ex-husband

Description

Lin Wei Xi found out after she died that she was just a cannon fodder in a novel, used as contrast to the gentle and considerate and virtuous female lead.

The male lead was her ex-husband, the dignified heir of Yan Wang, his family were superior and brilliant, but the female lead was not her.

The female lead was her concubine-born younger sister, and her husband’s white moonlight, his cinnabar mole, no wonder! After Lin Wei Xi died, her husband finally married her sister as he wished.

She watched coldly at the two like honey in the oil, in love and harmonious, everyone using the success of her younger sister to contrast the impropriety of the original wife.

Lin Wei Xi sneered, okay, since your love moves the world, then this sister will come back and be your stepmother!

So she married her ex-husband’s father, the father-in-law she never met in the previous life, the country’s God of war, who has not remarried after losing his wife, the one that hold military power, the brilliant Yan Wang.

Later Yan Wang, who was in his prime years and used to act decisively, looked at his small, delicate, much younger wife, and had a headache.

No matter, she is still young, he have to spoil her, indulge her, teach her.

It's a beautiful story of having a second chance in life...

MC is strong and witty, a cold and indifferent woman to others yet childish and playfull in front of ML.

Whereas, ML is supper caring and understanding... He doted MC from the beginning to the end... He's not also someone who will trample others in order to clarify his self.

Spoiler

(related to his dead-wife) He also didn't shattered his son's perception towards his mother where the "son" thought ML and his mother have a fairy tale like love story. Although it create a misunderstanding but I think as a father he did a really good job..

Awesome & beautifully translated.

a story of Reincarnation of FL, the 'cannon fonder from her previous life VS her sister, the 'modern soul transmigrator' are quite refreshing here.

Most transmigration story i've read, the 'modern soul transmigrator' TYPICALLY written as an Over-Bearing character without flaw.

But here are different.

And the ML... if we didn't read toward the extra... From his (an ancient man) perspective, he's actually felt guilty for marrying his daughter-in-law's "soul"...

but im glad they both (FL & ML) manage to talk out & clearing everything andbe happy towards the end.

A heartwarming, healing story told from the point of view a "cannon fodder" type of character who usually suffers to hold up the transmigrator protagonist's halo.

I love how it didn't try to be complicated with palace intrigues or inner courtyard fights. It focused on the developing love story between FL and ML. And also getting justice for FL's past life.

It was painful reading through what FL went through and it was satisfying to see all the knots from her past get detangled and smoothened out as she gets the love... more>> and happiness she deserves. <<less

What not to do as a transmigrator: the story.

It's a fun, sad read, and the length is just right for reading. Deserves the 4.5 rating, this novel is just one level away from malicious empress (who isn't malicious, this based title is from the view of her enemies lol).

Very tame read, nothing mature happens, no winks

Translation is good but rough, big plus is you can binge it right now!!

I really really love it. It's been a good while since I've last read a good ancient bg. It made my heart flutter, just the right amount of angst, fluff and schemes.

MC is coquettish but headstrong. I love how the writing made me not mind that he married his previous father-in-law. She's very smart and I love how she maneuvers her way around the mansion. ML is mature, he's very caring, very doting very indulgent. He's not tsundere, not overbearing but very indulgent. I really love this kind of... more>> trope, I'm tired of seeing overbearing MLs.

This is v domestic, the secrets were found out by the end but not explicitly stated. Those who should suffer, suffered, those who deserve a good life, lived a good life. The secrets were out even regarding the previous wang fei.

I love it so much. 5/5 <<less

I was a bit hesitant to read it but after going through the reviews I read it. It was unexpectedly interesting to read. The ML is one of its kind as in whatever story that I have read there is none like his character so far. FL is also one interesting character.
It became one of my favourite.

Enjoyable read, nice pacing for 105chapters (minus 3 bonus ones).

Complex and well written characters in a rather easy/beginner stage world sort of imbalances the overall story though.

Everybody (at least with decent amount of screen time) have their good sides and bad ones.

The MC is a teenager, so under the impulsiveness and explosiveness and headstrong willfulness, she has a very charitable, just and thoughtful side to her. That seems to pair well with the apathetic, indifferent yet overly selfless and gentlemanly ML. (Everybody should cut her some slack for a 17... more>> yr old teenager, come on)

Bu the drama are your typical telenovela dramas and the antagonist can hardly be called smart, same for the original male lead that seems to be only functioning on his last single brain cell who loves blaming all his problems on others while sticking his head in the sand refusing to face the reality before him.

Reborn with a devastating visage, MC might as well as bring down a country or two; she sets off well with the trained skill set of a noble lady and returns to the stage, yet quite unwillingly, face slapping her way through to happiness with ease. The lookism is quite strong with this one and might rub one or two people off.

She did NOT want to go back neither did she want to have ANYTHING to do with her former life or the people from her former life, let me be clear. She didn't throw herself onto the father in law in a form of disguise of revenge.

Spoiler

Author seem to have forgotten her own early storyline of the main leads and how insistent the ML was in bringing MC back with him instead of settling her somewhere, which she had hoped for. Later on, ML was even conflicted to why she came with him... Hey bro, you made her remember? She thought up all kinds of excuses but he beat every single one down. The last bit of confusion and reluctance towards MC that he had was incredibly unnecessary to the story.

[collapse]

To be honest, everybody had a hand in this long lasting misery. The ML is rather too laissez-faire as a parent and OG ML was raised too indulgently in the presence of people who either schemed for their own merits or those who are not quite right in the head.

The transmigrator's life views were also already set in stone, she obsessively wants and easy life and marry rich. She had a strong shadow of her past and little self worth that transformed itself in her second life into paramount arrogance and protagonist complex because she could utilize the 26 year long accumulated life experience to outsmart toddlers... It's really pathetic when you read it, and how incredibly proud she was in beating children...

But because she treats everybody like inferior life forms and with insincerity, everything was bound to go wrong.

For the MC it was quite a smooth road to success. Transmigrator had become so arrogant, she was lax in learning and polishing herself so she fell behind everything she wanted to compete with.

It took a while to be able to differentiate between the pure favour of a beauty and actual love that ML had for her, but after that, their intimacy (not sexual) and bickering fights become more and more sweet and sugary. I don't care how often they smash unless you give me details and thank God the story didn't go like every once every dozen paragraph about how exhausted she was the next day. (*cough* unless it's smut) <<less

The MC had a pretty bad history of love. Common problems in ancient stories where me have 3 wives and 4 concubines. How can they expect a child to grow up well in this environment. Really tho.

With the MCs thought upon rebirth were relatable, it was during the taunts of the sister that she deviated to a peacefull life she planned to have.

The ML, GHY, was simply an endearing, patient and wise man. Meeting the MC was fate, they compliment and made each other whole.

MC character after she rebirthed and achieve more higher power : prideful first wife, self centered, hard worker, aloof and can act cute toward her golden thigh, willful, spoiled, not doing any struggle coz she was now in better position than her shu sister.

No wonder she died back then, it was her own fault. She didnt... more>> try to ask for explanation, for whatever reason as a prideful and self centered person, didnt try to think the other way.

And now after she married into the family, she turned into a more self centered spoiled version of her past self.

MC and her shu sister (the protagonist of the novel) were truly peas in a pod. It was just we're reading from MC's justifying pov.

This story is truly forgettable. I finished reading in Feb 26, now March 10 I alr dont remember anything abt this book. The MC is just that... selfish but written in a sloppy not smart way that made me felt bored and negative of her own justification. <<less

damn, I never thought I'd fall in love with this book. the main conflict is just FILLED with misunderstandings ugh. Though I wonder, who should I blame for Gao Xi's misfortune? spoilers ahead-

Gao Ran

Spoiler

Gao Ran is a transmigrator and the original heroine of the novel. honestly it surprised me a bit how she was similar to the MCs from rebirth/transmigration manhuas with all the "i'll remember this and return it tenfold!" attitude. She transmigrated into a 6 year old useless concubine daughter and always hated the legitimate daughter, Gao Xi. (because everyone looked down on concubine children during those days, , rlly cant blame gao xi lmao) she vowed to steal everthing from Gao Xi. Although I don't know why she feels accomplished for being better than a six year old when you're mentally 30.

[collapse]

Gao Xi

Spoiler

She grew up without a mother, and without a father's love. After her younger concubine sister fell down into a pond, her achievements kept growing more and more. Gao Xi felt insecure and while the other kids would play outside with each other, she would stay in day and night pushing herself to be better than Gao Ran. One day she got a pair of Jade Pendants that she really liked, and casually gave the other half to Gao Ran. That's where the misunderstandings start out.

[collapse]

why GCY thought GX saved him:

Spoiler

the person who saved him left half of a jade pendant. He took it and asked his father to search for the "owner" of the other half, which was Gao Xi. He never even mentioned the jade pendant incident and proposed to her, her family accepted. Only after he found out that it was Gao Ran's pendant, he felt lied to and thought Gao Xi was vicious asf to steal her younger's sister spot... bruh.

I was currently on chapter 9, but this novel is so good that I have to make a review about this. This novel is quite similar to married to the male leads father but I like this novel better. I love that the MC is trying to live a simple life when she was reborn. I could totally relate with it. Instead of trying to revenge, she wanted to run away from all of that stuff. I mean, isn't it similar to all of us. I would run away to... more>> if I found out I was in a novel and my life will not go smoothly.

Currently on c64, I went to mtl, but my capabilities of reading was limited since it was historical. And I wanted to fully understand the novel so I'm just gonna wait for the translation. I also want to clarify, I do not pity the son at all. He should take full responsibility and he sure does is guilty for causing the death of his first wife regardless of his mistakes or whatnot. And now he wanted to regret it and suddenly he fell in love with the current mc? A scumbag for sure. U're trying to gain sympathy by projecting urself as innocent. Idk for now tho, I haven't seen his action that shows he truly regrets his mistakes. And even if he feels guilty, he shouldn't be excused just because of that. Every crime is still a crime. His negligence cause the death. There're so many novel that mostly justified their ML actions and wrongdoings and it just sadden me. Who am I to lie when I said I'm not going to mtl it. Currently on c90. The mtl is easy tho despite it being historical. Thank god I find the right website since the mtl ones haven't fix their repeated chapter yet. Will continue after I finished reading.

I completed it. Just two words. Painfully beautiful. I feel sad but at the same time happy? Idk tho. Just feel something stabbing in my heart. Gonna reread second marriage to a wealthy man after this. This bl is my comfort novel and its relatively similar but more light hearted. <<less

This story is memorable because the main couple experienced a terrible first marriage, and each payed a heavy price for it leading them to closing their hearts to future prospects. On the one hand, Lin Wei Xi/Gao Xi was immersed in self-reflection, but always true to her nature and heart. On the other hand, Prince Yan was immersed in political turmoil and self-restraint. One was lively and unrestrained, the other was reticent and guarded. And their journey to becoming a couple began with the cause of a life-saving grace and... more>> self-recommendation to a second marriage.

There's almost a nonexistent scheming mind of the FL, but it was satisfactory to see all characters who wronged her receive self-inflicted punishment for their own actions (karmic retribution).

This writing style in these kinds of novels bothers me. First, the book gives you a family tree that you’ll never care about, then all the past relationships these people have and then when you finally come to the conversation part they are only one sentence and the rest is that one sentence’s explanation... This exceeded my expectations. Previously read a novel with a similar premise (It's better to be the Empress Dowager, which I just realized is from the same author), but this one is way better in terms of story development and logical flow (despite transmigration being a fantasy theme) for me.

, but I was still quite disappointed with how she ended up. The story featured different character POVs, which greatly helped me as a reader in understanding the thought process that led to their actions. Also kinda surprised at how much regret was present in a number of characters here, but there is very little redemption arc for them.

FL is ok, meets what I would expect as a female lead, sometimes quite annoyingly foolhardy and childish that it seems a little out of character. Not OP but capable enough because of her background. There are also a few more childish main characters parading as young adults here. ML equally shines in this novel, who made quite a number of mistakes that shaped how things turned out the way they were but have found the motivation to fight to change things. I found it hard to empathize with the second ML up till the end- because how he ended showed how little he has matured.
Spoiler

It's not that he fell in love with FL, they didn't have enough time and interactions for that. It's more that he was unable to move on from the possibility/idea of falling in love with FL in the past, and decided to torment himself multiple times throughout his life. So now, he may never escape the love-of-a-lifetime-that-got-away syndrome.

[collapse]
. And I don't wanna start with that "protagonist FL" of that heavenly book, I think she has been well outlined in the story.

So yeah, it is a good quick read for this genre, and maybe I'll find some more similar stories like this moving forward. <<less

I quite enjoyed this novel. It adds a slightly interesting twist to some pre-established tropes, but the story doesn't take itself to seriously. It moves along at a nice pace and it's to overly complicated.

Spoiler

What I found fun, was the reincarnated? Vs the transmigrator. Both the protag and the antagonist are aware that they're in a novel. The transmigrator doesn't know the contents of the book though, she only knows "she's the protagonist". Our MC, is aware that the world is a book. At the very least, she has gained knowledge of past and future events. By reading the "book" near the beginning of the novel.

[collapse]

What I also like, is the way the novel plays with cause and effect. But doesn't necessarily point it out to you, just hinting at it sometimes.

Spoiler

A really nice example. Would be Lin father going to the capital with his daughter to try and find work. Only for his daughter to get ill, so he stood on the side of the street to beg. He inadvertently drew the attention of Gao Xi (her name before her death). Gao Xi, seeing the father daughter pair, melt remorseful seeing there good relationship. She didn't have a good relationship with her father. So she gave him 20 taels of silver. He took that money, got his daughter medicine, set her up with her aunt and then went to join Prince Yan's army (our future ML). Fighting for 6 yrs on the battlefield, he exhausted his life to save Prince Yan. When his daughter found out, even though she was conferred titles, lands and money, she knew she'd never see it. So she decided to leave with her father, leaving her body behind for Gao Xi to wake up in. As thanks for saving her life all those years ago. This inexplicable connection, is also what brings the two love interests initially together.

[collapse]

The entire book is kind of like this. It flows very smoothly and when one event happens, it could end up being connected to tons of other smaller or bigger events. I also really enjoyed the ending, I was actually quite satified with the antagonists ending. Though I've read a few reviews say they were slightly disastified, because the son didn't really get punished much. I kind of disagree.

Spoiler

When the antagonist realizes in her madness, that Lin Xi is Gao Xi reborn. They confront eachother in private with no one around. This, conversation is later eluded to be heard by Prince Yan. It's at this point in the story, we realize, he also knows who Lin Xi is. Because he goes back, and makes sure she can never tell anyone the truth in the future. It's also made obvious, that Gao Xi's ex-husband has also figured it out some time ago. He also realizes, he's f*cked up. He actually loved Gao Xi but didn't appreciate her, so he lost her and lost everything that should have been his. It's very unlikely he'll inherit, or even marry again. We also find out, he never actually loved the antagonist in the first place. He has to live with the knowledge, that his decisions drove two women to death because of his own s*upidity. Our end scenes describe his life as extremely mediocre, he is destined to fade into the background from now and never rise again.

[collapse]

All in all, the story is really great and I loved the romance too. Even though there is a large age gap, it doesn't seem to off putting for some reason and it may be because she comes across to much more mature than anyone else in the story. <<less

Body Swap! The FL, Gao Xi, died of illness after being mistreated by her husband. If that's not enough, just after she wakes up in a new body (the body of a girl named Lin WeiXi), she finds out from a dream that her whole life was a book in which her younger Shu-sister, Gao Ran, was the transmigrated protagonist. As the protagonist of her novel, Gao Ran stepped on the FL and ended up becoming the second wife of the FL's husband. For her second chance at life, the... more>> FL doesn't have great aspirations, but because of her new body's past, her road ends up becoming entangled with Prince Yan, her ex-husband's father. So, only a couple months after she had officially died, she ends up back in the same home with her ex and her sister.

The story is mostly drama and character exploration. I don't really like the FL that much, her personality doesn't suit the era and it makes everything feel unrealistic when everyone fawns over her being

well, shrew-ish. I found the premise of her being the stepmother of her ex most interesting, but that's actually not explored in detail, and her romance with the ML, Prince Yan, is pretty so-so. It's that typical story where the wild FL ends up being the apple of the stoic and righteous ML's eye.

If you're interested in this kind of simple drama, I still think it's worth the read. I just wasn't overly interested in the characters and ended up dropping it mid-way. But I'm already considering rereading it one day, though not anytime soon. For the TL, since there are two versions:

  • OLD: The old TL uses more Pinyin, so if you're more comfortable with it, then you shouldn't have too hard of a time comprehending the novel, though it's not the cleanest in terms of grammar.
  • NEW: The new TL from Moon Jellyfish is the one I read, this one westernized some of the more complicated titles and explains a lot of what's going on in the beginning to improve comprehension. It's very clean and what I'd personally recommend.
Warning: This novel features a 16yo FL and an over 30 ML. This is quite normal for the time period and nothing is actually explicitly written (it's fade-to-black and doesn't even feature kisses!), but I thought it best to say it here. Other than that, there's the usual warnings for this era where women are considered inferior.

RATING: 3.35/5

It's not my favorite, but despite me not really liking the characters and the occasional inconsistencies, it's not too bad. I liked it mostly for the initial premise, and am already looking for similar novels to pick up lolol. <<less

4 stars because I like how the actual story played out, and enjoyed the pictures and scenes the author painted with her words. I like this author’s stories a lot, even though the plot tends to be similar (But I like her plots so that’s a plus point for me). Despite liking this story so much and immensely enjoying the time I spent reading it, I’m taking of a huge star in the ratings to be fair.

One reason is ... more>>
Spoiler

she transmigrated into someone else. I feel like Gao Xi didn’t get any retribution’s or any regrets from anyone. I would have liked it better if she reincarnates as herself, stopped the engagement with the original ML, somehow encountered the current ML, and the story took off from there. However, that would have been a different story than what we got.

[collapse]
So this one is a personal reason.

The real reason for my 4 stars is: I dislike the FL, ML, and the antagonists.

Haha. Yes, I dislike the main couple. They were very good together and I enjoyed all the dog food they threw, but as people, I dislike them. What I liked though, was that the author depicted their flaws but never stated their flaws so the reader can interpret for themselves. Most readers love the ML, but I don’t.

Spoilers ahead... Let’s do FL first.

I dislike her character because

Spoiler

1) her golden finger is too much. Everyone falls in love with her, for example,

Spoiler

her grandmother accepts her new body instantly and without question and instantly transfers all the wealth to her upon meeting her.

[collapse]

2) She’s very childish, which I can accept but sometimes she’s unreasonably childish.

3) I can’t fully accept (2) because as GAO Xi, she was ‘strict with herself’, yet she’s reborn as another woman and had a swift personality change.

4) She never got retribution for her past life. She seems to have swept that under the rug. The other characters quickly forgot Gao Xi and acted with the norm of the time - a woman died wrongfully but so what? She’s just a useless, unimportant woman, no great loss. Just forget it. However, I didn’t expect Gao Xi’s reborn self to think the same about past Gao Xi.

5) She helped her maiden family after they used her and sacrificed her. She comes off as wishy-washy overall when she does this. She also was supposed to be ‘smart’ but she made moves that constantly caused people to suspect her.

[collapse]

For the ML, he’s far from the perfect character people say he is.

Spoiler

He’s so passive in his life. Too much so. Passively got married, passively left his son to raise himself, passively let the estate fall to ruin (because you know, he has so much money it doesn’t matter who steals how much from his coffers *rolls eyes*), passively granted his son’s request to get married (without anyone asking the girl), passively let his son marry 2 months after 1st wife’s death (he thinks it’s an injustice to the first wife but not enough of an injustice to do anything about it or even mention it), passively got married again, passively refused to talk to his ‘beloved wife’ about issues between them,

Spoiler

passively left her pregnant self

[collapse]

... passive should be his name.

He also fails to communicate with the FL. This is a part of his passivity.

He’s also ‘too busy’. But I want to call it as it is - he just didn’t care, was too passive to care, or didn’t not want to bother. He was so ‘Too busy” defending the country so didn’t even send a steward to his house after his mother and wife died and his son is left all alone in the house with no one to raise him. Also no one to manage the house. Yet, he has ‘eyes in the capital’ and ‘knew what was going on in the house’. Then dude, why did you not deal with it? Too busy? No, he’s just passive. For a great decisive general, passivity is kind of weird.

He also fails to investigate his DIL’s death, even after he understood she was his ‘beloved’ wife.

[collapse]

I just hate that everyone just brushed Gao Xi’s first life and death under the rug.

And that’s why I shaved off a star. I wanted to shave another one off, but in all honesty, despite the above, the story entertained me. It’s not the best story, not the most original story, but not so bad either. <<less
