Rebirth of a Star General

The ancient saying goes: Most generals come from Guan Xi, while ministers come from Guan Dong.

He Yan was born to be a Star General.

She was merely a stepping stone for her family, and was used as her brother’s substitute. She had fought on the battlefields for years, bringing peace to Xi Qiang, stopping the barbarians… When her brother recovered, she gave up her position with great laurels brought to her name. Without further ado, she was married off.

During her married life, she was forsaken by her husband and even suffered from a strange illness, thereby losing her eyesight…

The young and pretty concubine stood in front of her, speaking softly: “The decoction you drank that made you blind was instructed by the elders of your family. As you know, the dead tell no tales. If you lived, you would be your family’s greatest threat!”

A great general of her time, the heroine of the country, died pitifully in the hands of those shameless women, who only knew to fight for a man’s favor… How absurd!

When she opened her eyes again, she had become the drill fields officer’s daughter, who was weak and arrogant, innocent and naive.

They had stolen her glory, taken her life, lead her army and betrayed her feelings! She had crawled back from the depths of hell and would take back everything she had lost, one by one.

Bring the world under her feet and with her beauty and nobility, overwhelm the nine prefectures!

But would she get out easily once she entered the barracks?

Hardly did she begin her adventures when He Yan met her arch-enemy of the previous lifetime, that young hunk whose “enemies would retreat as soon as he attacked”.

The chic and cool female general versus the handsome and ravenous young man. Two efficient generals team up to conquer the world!

4.4. He Yan is pretty great, rather atypical for stories set in an ahistorical time. Enjoyed the story overall, but I do agree that I felt slightly disappointed by the romance focus towards the end. It was still decently balanced, but still.

Also, docked some points because a lot of battle strategies are copped from Romance Of The Three Kingdoms/records of the 3 kingdoms (although I don't remember which parts of ROTK are fictitious, there's a lot of overlap here). I love ROTK, but it was kind of unnerving to see... more>> the same strategies used and praised here. In any case, Three Kingdoms is (at least mostly) real (ish) history, so it's not unfair to use it in a novel and I guess it can be counted as a homage to Zhuge Liang, lmao. In any case, ROTK is famous and studied enough that any original CN readers should be able to tell, plus commonly borrowed from in general, so it's not an overly big issue except for making me pause briefly. The only thing is that I wish there were some more derivative strats that weren't so similar.

Spoiler

Sending straw men to scam arrows from the enemy, for one. Sending small grease-laden boats to burn the enemy's chained-together ships when a wise man predicts that there will be wind to turn the tide of the battle, for another. A variant of empty city strat, when He Yan's master sits atop the city gates with his Qin and deters the enemy after most of the city has already evacuated and there aren't enough troops, although he's more OP and deals real damage with his arrays compared to Zhuge Liang's bluff.

Damn... this author really loves to have a tragic side couple. And it's so well written to the point I get super emotional. Last novel it was the brother of the ML and this time there were two... I really want to crawl myself in this world just to somehow save at least the second tragic couple. ... more>>
Spoiler

First one; the teacher of the FL and his sweetheart the queen. Second one; Yan he and his wife. Both times the male dies.

The first one was already super sad but the second one was just heartbreaking. First letting us see him as an arrogant/agressive general. Later seeing him love his wife wholeheartedly and bragging about her. To then just letting him slowly die in the war when he was looking forward to seeing his child get born and looking forword to being a great dad. It really ripped my heart apart.

Although you can't really say it was a couple but the Chu guy (second ML) and the maid were also pretty tragic. I was actually rooting for the 2 but there is always a guy who can't get over the FL even years later. I just don't like that concept but it gets repeated so many time. I hoped he would have a happy ending with the maid but that went to hell because of the crown prince and Chu's stempother&fiance. But even if that didn't happen, the author would probably make it so that he still wouldn't get over the FL even if she's by his side.

He deserved a better ending. His life just too cruel without any real choice. The only options he had where between two kinds of hell. The maid once said that she knew his cruel side but I don'tagree with that. He didn't have much choice and had to be cruel but it wasn't something he liked. It was pretty clear because he was never cruel if he didn't have to be. If circumstances allowed it, he would always choose the kind way. So he really deserved a haply ending or at least an ending where he gets over the FL. But even that wasn't granted

This novel is great. The only complaint I have is the unnecessarily long flashbacks of too many people. But maybe that's what makes it more immersing. Still could have been a little less in my opinion. Like the old best friend of the ML. It was quite redundant.

Intrigue is a part of it but more on the background than the last novel. Not necessarily worse because of that but an observation. In the beginning it seemed more of a: intrigue/conspiracy on the front and romance in the back but it's actually the opposite.
Spoiler

Because the moment the ML realizes his feelings, the conspiracies and intrigue that was built ul slowly, gets solved pretty fast so that the focus can be more on the relationship progress. Not that I'm complaining. Their relationship is great and funny. Just a little disappointing how the built up was amounted to one big action and ML handing all the other evidence afterwards.

Solid 4.5/5

P.S.: After reading two novels of this author, I can almost for sure guess that they have a type: cold, ruthless but also a kind side, 100/10 pearless appearance, and a sad/lonely past that only the FL can take him out of it and gets to experience "normal" emotions (love, jealousy...) for the first time because of her and only her. But that seems to be in line with most Chinese MLs.

Just glad that he was a great father too. Because I always hate it when they make the father jealous of their own child because they "take away the attention of the FL".
Spoiler

Maybe because it was a daughter but well, I've seen too many MLs like this that make it hard for their children just so that they hand over their responsibilies to them to have more time with the FL and explore the world together

Writing this review at chapter 90.

I actually enjoyed reading this novel. It has a similar yet different vibe compared to the other works of the author. This novel is slow-paced and focuses more on the character build-up. Another thing that I like about this novel is that it really highlights the minor characters which is unusual for an isekai novels since they tend to focus more on the MC, but this one didn't. You'll grew to love the minor characters. And the relationship between the MC and ML is buildin... more>> up gradually which is fantastic.

Unfortunately, the translation's still ongoing. I tried reading the MTL but my head hurts after it so I'll just wait until the translation finishes. <<less

❤❤❤

very very very good!

the romance came later but hey it also came at the right time.

... more>> Character building is superb! Everyone grows up and change is inevitable - but in a good way.

This novel really made me "feel" that birth had nothing to do with what one can accomplish. Truely talented peoole may be rare but stubbornly dedicated ones are even more so.

Circumstances may have pampered a person when young but life will eventually force everyone to grow up sooner or later. Owning up not only for the mistakes they made but also for the regrets that can never be undone.

In summary: It is REALLY hard for ordinary people to understand the minds of great people. Like it is hard for those who had great ambitions to sympathize with the easy life of the unambitious.

Spoiler

PS: the villain died so easily in my opinion. maybe cause he's already so old and had no sons to take over? a son-in-law can be viewd as a son somewhat but will never compare to a biological one. There's lot of plot holes in the end but more importantly SEND A KNIFE TO THE AUTHOR!!! WHY DID YOU KILL THE LIVELIEST ONE OF THE BUNCH????? Hate you hate you.......i cried a river cause of you! imma gonna find ice now my eyes are swollen. Author also has great opinions about love. many cahracters are left single by choice and author-made circumstances like being killed by said author........ humhumhumhum

[collapse]

But despite everything~~~ I stilk love you author even though I really want to send you a knife! 😬.. 😧..😩..😑....😗😗 <<less

Another amazing work from Qian Shan Cha Ke. It's was totally different from any of her previous work which I think it's really refreshing to read. Instead of sticking with the same plot with different characters. She was able to make a difference on this one although it's still about rebirth. I think it would be much interesting if she actually make the original MC to re live her life but making a decision to be herself instead of making the portagnist take on another girls body. But anyway it's... more>> still not satisfying. Writers always focus on women portagnist tho. And I hope she can make more story for women empowerment. It's good. Worthy of my time to read it. <<less
