HA-HA-HA!
I, Xiaoshen, the great and mighty dragon have awoken! I might be the last dragon remaining in the world, but my power is unparallel… Huh?… Where’s my lake? Who took my water?! Yuling Sect’s Founder, Fang Cun?! I’ll go there, and make them repay every debt they owe me from thousands of years ago!
Now, where’s my bride? …Huh? He blocked my power then disappeared? Humans can’t be trusted… One cheats you, the other steals your water… Hmm… This Shang Jiyu guy is not as bad as the others… But only sometimes, which is weird…
Illiterate? You’re the illiterate one! No, I’m not an octopus. Not a Jiao either! And definitely NOT a turtle!
I am… the last azure dragon of the cultivation world!

Fluffy, cute relaxing read. In a fantasy xianxia world with cultivators and nature/animal shapeshifters, the MC wakes up in human form and discovers:

a) He's the last dragon in the world.
b) Ten thousand years have passed.
c) He can't use his powers.
d) He's been sent a new bride.
e) Someone stole his great Lake!

It's only 42 chapters, but feels like a much fuller novel. Plot twists were good. Really enjoyed the side characters and the MC's dad deserves a novel or three on his own.

Enjoying the translation!

Despite being a bit pedantic, I actually enjoy how the MC a lot! Xiaoshen is a funny and cute character, truly the crux of the whole novel. I find that his interactions with the ML can be a bit confusing, but I think that's really just how things are supposed to be. Over all, a good light cultivation read that lacks the heaviness of many other novels in the same genre.

I'm sincerely looking forward to finding out how this series will develop and end.

This story was great fun. Not too long, plot was nice and tight. Characters had distinct, developed personalities. And the screwiest cultivation sect you'll ever find! It took a little bit of doing to understand the ML but it works, and EXRs translations are lovely and very readable as usual. Very worth reading!

I loved it by the end. Part of the first half is a bit slow, but it does pick up, and there are some really surprising plot twists and revelations by the end.

I skimmed some of the slow bits and wish we could have seen more of the romance, but it's amazing. It's also fairly short at 42 chapters.

If you are looking for a deep plot and hardcore dragon action, then, no, this novel is not for you.

After all, considering the fact that this is a short novel, in my opinion, the author has done a good job. There was a good plot, some fluffiness and romance and a notorious villain. A well compacted read that lasted for only 42 chapters but gave a brief overview of all things needed to make a well founded world.

A pretty good read!

I would say, it's an okay novel. Definitely not a must-read, if one considers all of its pros and cons, then in the end it will amount to a pretty mediocre piece of writing.

I am not a fan of MC, I understand why he is the way he is and why many people took a liking to him, yet for me he was too annoying even for a dragon. ML is even less likeable than him, he is bland, and now that I think of him, I can barely describe... more>> his personality with any other words apart from arrogant. Their interactions were neither interesting nor pleasant to read, the reader barely gets any idea of what is happening between them, since they don't really do much together (for better or worse, as, again, I did not like them separately or together).

The plot is quite decent though. Storywise, the novel is much better than if considered as a romance centred fiction. It is entertaining to follow, and there is a variety of different side characters to get to know. Nevertheless, the reader will not see most of them develop or learn anything about them, as the story follows MC extremely closely, leaving hardly any room for anybody else to shine. <<less

I'm just reading the extra chapters now but I want to comment before I go to sleep and lose my momentum. This book is funny, inventive and has both a very imaginative setting and several unique characters. The last dragon XiaoShen seems naive, unworldly, unsophisticated and even a little uncouth, but has undercurrents of shrewdness, strength, romanticism and kindness. His significant other, Shang Jiyu seems to have two personalities, one of which is not favored by XiaoShen; nobody else has any idea that there are two personalities, but everyone... more>> notices the couple seesawing between lovey-dovey behavior and energetic bickering. In addition to these two, there is a magpie demon cultivator whose constant talking and frequent puns get on peoples' nerves, several ink spirits, one of which seems particularly enamored of our dragon hero, an apparently easygoing clan leader, a few disgruntled elders, many eager cultvators and members of other water folk clans.

XiaoShen's emergence from seclusion is full of awkward and mysterious surprises and the story progresses in a lighthearted, occasionally slapstick way with many unexplained elements that do not start to make complete sense until the last couple of chapters. And the last couple of chapters are real doozies! The narrative that was once mostly comic in tone, begins to expand rapidly through an action packed conflict between powerful beings and into a mesmerizing and moving exploration of life and death, individuality and collective responsibility, selfishness, true heroism, wisdom and profound love.

It's almost shocking how strong and beautiful the last few chapters of this book are, and how all of the little mysteries and happenings and all of the idiosyncratic and comically flawed personalities of the characters combined to set the stage for the exciting and very moving climax to the story.

I read this on Exiled Rebels Scanlations and the translation was almost entirely very good - a few awkward moments here and there, but not enough to mess up the flow of the storytelling. The footnotes were just right, explaining several Chinese idioms I hadn't heard before, without drawing a lot of attention to themselves.

I highly recommend this book to anybody who enjoys cultivation stories with comedic elements. The book is relatively short, the setting is very imaginative, the romance is present early on but has mysteries that aren't made clear until close to the end of the book - the romance has immediate attraction, some peculiar conflicts but no anxiety and proceeds without a lot of extra gushing from the author.

I was expecting a light diversion, but got a lot more. <<less

it was a nice read!! The latter and the journey to the 'suprise reveal' gave more excitement to me than the first half.. Also the first hf bored me and almost lose my interest BUT I pushed thru the end and yay it was nice read~~ recommended only if you're bored. Plot is a little bit draining cos am not that enthusiastic with water myths but the MC AND ML interactions are cute.

It's okay on a general level.

I once or twice had to bring myself to continue reading because of that principle of mine to finish something that I started reading.

The characters and their personalities aren't this novel's stronger side;

... more>> even though their behaviour and motivations make sense, it didn't leave too much impression on me. Especially the nonexistent romance. I mean, it's there, but seems like it's only in name. Xiaoshen's and Shang Jiyu's interactions felt honestly flat.

What pleasantly surprised me were those unexpected revelations which connected some things in the story and I liked that part of the novel a lot.

It's not bad, it's okay and just okay. <<less

    1. Laid back, funny, well built story
    1. I misunderstood who is the ML at the earliest chapter
    1. I am not fan of dragon (due to being implicated from a lot of cultivation novel with typical hateful arrogant dragon) but I certainly love our Xiaoshen
    1. Totally recommended!

It was interesting. Fluffy and relaxing read, even in the few chapters where there was a bit of action.

MC is kind of eccentric and for me somewhat annoying. ML doesn't really have much of a personality apart from being the strong and silent type with a strange temper.

Storyline was ok but I feel the writer could have done more with it.

But still I kinda liked it at the end.

It's an okay read.

Overall, the story and world-building are what make me going.

It's actually a decent slice-of-life with a bit of motive given to MC. So don't be too surprised if the motive is put on the back.

... more>> However, the MC was really not my type. Dumb of me to keep trying to read a book with this type of protagonist.

ML was okay tho. He's not with MC all the time, giving an idea that he had another life/side beside being with MC, which give him a score for me.

But because the story is from MC's pov who is already enough self-centered.... basically you got the idea.

Perhaps everyone and everything are made only for MC. <<less

i’m surprised there’s a fairly good amount of positive reviews when my entire reading experience had been so dull because of how flat this novel was. if you’re looking for something written seriously, don’t read this. I can read a good comedic novel from time to time but this isn’t even purposely funny, it’s just such a big mess, you get so mad that you can only laugh sarcastically. I only finished this so that my review would count and to see if the ML has a happy ending. yes,... more>> just the ml. idc about the MC here & i’ll explain why later.

sigh. 21 chapters in, the author finally remembered a plot is supposed to move to make a story so the plot that had been dragging on moved for once. 34 chapters later, the author remembered there was actually a major plot behind all this and a villain. there is so much you can do with just three major plot points—if that was their worry—but they didn’t know how to f*cking write it.

Spoiler

the author could’ve properly fleshed out all of these into mini-arcs or something and just do proper worldbuilding: the mc’s identity, the mc’s waters & property, the spirit bracelets, the man behind the spirit bracelets, the ml’s split personality, the ml’s cultivation, a side story for supporting characters to enhance world building, the complicated bickering relationship of the MC and ML to probably a romance???? and then we could’ve had a decent story. but it’s so lacking.

[collapse]

there’s so much the author could have done but they couldn’t even properly write One plot point right, I was so disappointed I could make a book from all my swears. you can’t write the characters properly and you can’t write the plot, then what’s the point of all this? I've seen fanfiction writers, who are primarily not professional or published writers, write way better, more coherent, more creative, and more memorable than this. alright, this Is memorable but in a way that only happened because of how bad it was.

lazy and heavily flawed. it lacks too much narration that it leaves you confused while reading the next passages. besides, for example, “his hair is blue” that’s all we get in a passage. there’s no “it was reminiscent of the ocean and flowed just as coolly” or something. the shifting of pov’s is also a mess. one minute, it’s one person and the only hint that it’ll shift to another person’s perspective is when the name of that person is mentioned in the next sentence. it’s clunky and chaotic, it ruins the reading experience. the author writes on the basis or assumption that we know what’s going on and what’s going through the mc’s head so there are no in-depth descriptions of what’s happening, no foreshadowing, and we don’t see at all any of the mc’s thoughts. something just happens and then we find out “ah MC planned this” or “oh so that happened” exactly because the MC f*cking says it as part of his dialogue. when there Is an explanation to how MC decided to do something, the narration is so little and so simplistic. it doesn’t leave any impression. there are parts where the author could’ve emphasized mc’s power as a dragon and how he understood his dao etc, but it’s like the author seriously just wrote whatever happened in passing. the protagonist can be lazy, but even his thoughts and course of action need to be written out. otherwise, we’d have both a lazy protagonist and a lazy author, which seems to be the case here.

don’t even count on the romance here. MC is too childish, immature, and unreasonable and there’s no explanation whatsoever about why he’s so immature and simpleminded like this, he just Is. the ML is treated badly by his own MC and the people serving MC. he gets called a consort bit*h and a treacherous consort. their “like” for each other doesn’t even have any tension or reason. like another review said, it was flat. the romance here is only in name, pretty much nonexistent. how they even started liking each other doesn’t make sense, they just suddenly start having mutual feelings like it’s whatever..

Spoiler

the MC just got attached the same day they met and the ML indulges him because he made him feel comfortable thanks to his being from the water race. 35 f*cking chapters in and there hasn’t been Any progress in their relationship. their relationship is so shallow and fragile. the ML is so blindly in love with the MC who won’t even treat his split personalities equally and idealizes the noble and more “dignified” one.

and then MAJOR SPOILER WARNING—

he was born to basically exist for the MC. can you believe that? someone who didn’t love all of you, or didn’t love you at all, even??? you’re only in the world because you were meant to be used by them and give them power when they haven’t been treating you well??

[collapse]

as for the characters and some other things, i’ll write them under a spoilers dropdown. please be warned that I don’t hold back on completely spoiling novels. i’m going to explain exactly why I got so pissed reading this that it took me two weeks to finish reading it and why I only continued reading to see if the ML is f*cking happy in the end, even if it means being stuck with such a brainless MC.

Spoiler

the MC is pathetic, lacking dignity, and so flat, he feels like he was supposed to be a canon fodder character meant to be the foil to the protagonist. all he does is loaf around. he doesn’t even seem to care that much about the spirit bracelets and his property until he’s reminded that those problems exist. we literally see None of his perspective in things for us to even know if he’s just being lazy or not. we have little to no indication of whatever the hell he’s doing throughout the story except for the parts where he actually speaks or is outright doing nothing significant to the plot. he’s too one dimensional and the only defining traits he has (he’s a dragon, supposedly powerful, and good-looking) aren’t at all emphasized or drawn out where it should be. they’re all mentioned in passing without any backing up lol. alright, he’s supposed to be a dragon, dignified and noble. where is that in how he brings himself? or in how he fights? he can be lazy but still have those traits. we don’t even get an explanation to how MC breaks his own restriction.

the MC is so disloyal, so easily distracted and captivated by anything “beautiful.” he supposedly likes the ML but he has like 100 other brides and when the imperial harem (population: 1, the main and only wife) is established, he still gets distracted by some f*cking fish. how shallow are his feelings lmao. this is why I can’t understand why ML likes him so much. the ml’s “noble” personality can’t even tell if the MC actually likes him but clings to him. it’s hard to tell if the MC even loved the ML lol. what love? he just seemed to be captivated by the ML like every other pretty thing out there. we don’t see any insight on what makes ML special, just that he is, but that’s it. he’s not even firm about his feelings, isn’t outright about it, doesn’t validate ml’s feelings unless ML asked. he really doesn’t seem to care. if I were the ml, I would’ve already choked on blood from having such a pathetic spouse.

later on MC is finally willing to acknowledge ML as your lover. why? because he realized he’s his lanyu lake. how convenient. after ML saves his life by using his, he suddenly just falls for him?? you’re finally willing to f*cking act right, mc?..........i pity the ML so much. imagine being treated so bad by the person you love and you were actually born to serve him to protect and die for him without your own will because your life isn’t yours. that’s so f*cked up.

the entire story is MC bickering with one of ml’s split personality. it was so sad to read. not sad as in angsty but sad as in someone please get the ML the f*ck out of there, Save Him. he’s treated so badly by the MC, I want to beat him. this seriously doesn’t count as a romance. I hope MC regrets for the rest of his f*cking life but he’s so simpleminded, he won’t even remember his own wrongs. and as I guessed, he doesn’t even remember how he made ML feel lol suddenly everything just worked out after ML was revealed to be his lanyu lake. no “sorry I treated your other personality differently” no “sorry I didn’t listen to you about the imperial harem”. even worse, after this, ml’s personality becomes incredibly flat and forgettable. what happened to his gentleness and being indulgent??? he got injured but also became 0 in personality or what???

[collapse]

too messy, too many inconsistencies, too many things missing. <<less
