Ok I am the current translator of this series so my opinion might be biased but the reason I picked up this series was because of how the characters are well developed and how few incongruities it has.

This light novel wasn’t on the top 10 of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! For the past 3 years for nothing (2014 2nd, 2015 10th, 1016 3rd), the story flows really smoothly and makes the reader entertained.

Furthermore the main character is smart, not op but smart, and its not a smartness that makes... more>> the reader think everybody could think of that solution and it’s just the other characters that are dumb.

I consider myself an avid reader and this was the first time I found myself thinking ‘Hm, this is so good, it’s a shame that it not translated anymore (both translators on BT seems MIA), I should translate this so others can read it too!’.

It’s very consistent, the pace is good and overall it’s a very good read. <<less

The story is interesting and well written, with a smart, funny MC, but I dropped it because of the female characters. First, the female lead, she plays the straight-man (woman), it is funny at first but it becomes annoying later on. She uses physical violence on the MC whenever the MC express his ideas to someone, even though he brings up great points. Just because she is blindly loyal to her ideas, it does not give her a right to enforce them to the MC and censor the MC from... more>> expressing his. Their relationship is complex, but they do not seem like friends, or else she would not let others talk bad about him to her face, and she should understand that the MC does not want to join the military. Next is the Princess, the MC is obviously belligerent to authority, speaks out against the rulers of her country, and he does not want to join the military, but what does she do?
Spoiler

She makes him into a hero, and an officer candidate, where he tells her and his so-called friend that it might be the worst day of his life compare to the death of his mother

If those three female characters are killed, it will make the story a lot better. <<less

Why do we read novels?

I think we do it to escape from reality and imagine that we are the protagonists of these stories. We empathize with the main characters, we laugh with them, we cry with them, often getting emotionally involved with their lives.

I don't know about all of you, but I prefer the effort and sacrifice to be rewarded. It doesn't always happen that way in reality, but it's the least I expect to happen in a novel. Here, however, it doesn't happen.

Spoiler

Not only is the female lead, the childhood friend of the protagonist, killed, but the protagonist himself is executed at the end of the story.

This novels will suit you if you're looking to a novel that handles things a bit more mature than the usual jp novels. All of the characters are being developed and have actual backstory. Relationships get explored, battles are fought and blood is being spilled.

This novel is mainly about warfare strategies. And thus I would compare it to a more of a mature version "Altina the sword princess" with a MC that has bigger balls, is very smart, less dense, and an overall cast that somehow creates a very comfortable... more>> feeling when they are together, as if you were together with your own friends joking around.

A little warning before you start reading but this one isn't for people who can't deal with tragedy because there is going to be a lot of it in it. <<less

Ahhh... Where to start...

Story: 6/10 - The plot overall is a "OK" at best BUT, the ending left me with a very bitter taste in my mouth, many intelligent characters reaching s*upid conclusions, the author in my view uses "science" in a very distorted way, furthermore he tries to approach about "religion" but I can't expect so much from a Japanese when the subject is "religion" and his distorted way of dealing with the subject, I won't go into too much detail, the other topic addressed in the LN is... more>> his view on "technology" it is very distorted, as much as the work wants to convey a message of hope, seeing the characters go through a lot of despair, this for me was very unbalanced, with the sides (Empire & Kioka) that it addressed in the story.

Art: 5/10 - I found it very inconsistent, the anime did a great job, and the novel as it went along, it was very different from the age of the characters with the art shown.

Character: 8/10 - For me what carries the LN on his back are the characters! And how charismatic they are, their interaction and their "evolution as a person" were great, but we have the problem at the end of the story.

Enjoyment: 5/10 - I was loving it until I got to the last 3 volumes, I read it forward, I felt that the author was completely lost in his story.

Overall: 5/10 or ★★ - The story tries to approach it in a mature way, and it fails miserably in my opinion, as much as it showed certain consequences of the war which was interesting, its PLOT, which is OK, was finished in a s*upid way (Vol.12).

Spoiler

Do you remember the "Zero Requiem" case, if you remember, that's basically what the author TRIES to do, and in my view he fails miserably, at the end of LN he manages to solve the Empress problem, and throws the MC into a s*upid decision, being that he is one of the most intelligent characters in LN, moreover, the other side of the "war" and its core, has no loss, for me it was totally unbalanced in that sense.

The first half of this series is great! The characters are lovable and relatable. The first of the series is sprinkled with tragedy but situations are generally resolved by the MC’s Tactics (plot armor). If your looking for a realistic book about military and tactics WHY ARE YOU READING LIGHT NOVELS. If you enjoy a good enough story with good characters and a decent plot with plenty of humor and at times heavy undertones read up until the 5th book. If you actually thought that The End of Evangelion was... more>> a fitting ending for the Evangelion then continue reading. <<less

Gonna try to keep it simple but I tend to ramble. Overall a great and not afraid to do certain things. That said after events midway through I found myself speeding towards the end hoping only to find it far from what I would want. As such I can't give it a fair rating.

If you can go with the understanding that life happens to all of us, even in a story, I'd recommend this. If you can't like me then stop about a third of the way through.

It is a great read if you are into well thought out characters with good pacing and development as he deals with situations in an intriguing manner that keeps your glued into the story, unlike the typical cliches that are used it makes you get that feel of 'wow' or 'interesting' as he solves his problems in a calculated manner.

A favourite of mine and I highly recommend you read it (sadly it updates slowly)

Well, This is a War Novel, with so much tactic, strategy and logic emphasized on every single chapter. Hell, this is go on detail about strategy that if you didn't like descriptive type of novel, you'll not like it. But, if you're a sucker for description about strategy and logical move, this is your novel.

And for character, the beginning is a bit bland, but you won't regret it. The chara development will be shining on later volumes. And there's no Gary Stu character that can do anything. A positive value... more>> for me.

For romance, i'll say this: it's mostly platonic. Why? This is A Novel with War as theme. No one would expect romance in middle of war and killing right?

For now, i'll give it 4.3/5 stars. <<less

Spoiler

Really are you sure???? This is a really humongous spoiler that you really don't want to read unless you're really far into the story. Gotta be sure, there's no turning back! Yatorishino Igsem dies (and in Ikta's arms too, blocking bullets for him). It was super heartbreaking that after all they've been through, the author chooses this. Well, I guess that just means the ship for the princess is sailing for sure. Or not at all.

Give it a read. You will definitely like it. If you can read Japanese I recommend getting the rest of the novels since translations have died down. <<less

A very well written and solid novel. Exceptionally strong main characters, each with their own way of living and characterization that shines through and manages to maintain a level of uniqueness despite being somewhat tropey (or rather overdone) archetypes*1, good pacing and solid world building that focuses on setting things up for future use in the first few chapters of a novel then making use of them as necessary. The hook that is dangled at the end of Volume 1 is very compelling indeed and if each volume has a... more>> hook as powerful as that one, certainly worth reading more of it.

*1 For instance, considering Yatori's extremely straight laced attitude when it comes to military matters, 9/10 of those characters in other novels would focus on her inflexibility but here she's shown joking around and swapping boke and tsukkomi with Ikta. Some of the side characters like Haroma don't really break their stereotype but well.. At least in the first volume, they don't really play a major part as of yet. <<less

Okay, I just want to express my thanks to those people that has give spoilers in their review.

Usually I hate spoilers. I just want to read by myself to know about a story and their ending, either I like them or not. But I accidentally read the spoilers for this story, and now I dislike spoilers instead of hating them.

Sometimes spoilers are really needed, but lots of time, they are not. 🤔 I like stories with happy ending. And although some story has tragedy tag on them, sometimes they still could... more>> get their own happy ending. I haven't read this story myself, so I did not really know if this story has happy ending or not. But from the spoilers that I already read, I put a conclusion by my own self, that this story does not have happy ending, therefore I stop myself from starting to read this story. Although I also like "already completed stories", but the spoilers manage to stop me from binge reading all 14 volumes of this story.

But still, I don't want to give bad or negative reviews for this story, so for those other people that want to read this story, please go ahead and try reading it. Perhaps the story could give your own version of happy reading, because some review also mention the story have comedy and have their own happy and funny moments? 😅 I know some people would say bad about my review while I did not even read the story yet. But I read to have fun, and if I read this and get attached to it while reading till the end and found out the ending is like that, I don't know if I have fun or not. 😥 Because there are still lots of other stories that I haven't read yet, so I'm sure I could found others that I prefer over this. 😉 <<less

world building is good, and the character development is good until they get into critical situations, but the thing that gets me is the plot. At first the MC says he doesn't want to go to military academy be cause of how wars have affected his life, family and he does want to be around death (a valid argument) then gets convinced to go pretty easily by his childhood friend who knows his family background and why he doesn't want to go (kinda a d*ck move). Next he doesn't try... more>> at the academy because he doesn't want to be in the military, changes his mind pretty easily again, because of the childhood friend (who forced him to go). Later on the princess (worst character in my opinion) suggests to the MC that they should lose battles and land on purpose so that they can absorb the culture of the enemy country, even though the MCs whole thing was not wanting to be around death and war but I guess that just went out the window. Once the war starts all the supporting characters become useless except yatori who comes in and saves the day once an above average enemy comes <<less

Barely into the start of the story and already I can't stand the protagonist.

Supposedly smart, he lets himself get cornered into situations he loudly claims to hate. In a way I have sympathy for him since it's mostly inverse plot armor shoving him into the situations he should easily be able to avoid. It means the writing is weak and there isn't much of a chance it'll get better.

Is there something to like? Sure, just completely shut off your brain before reading.

First of all, through these 7 volumes I came to love this series and more importantly I came to love it’s characters. There is a level of detail in characterization and an element of likability to the main cast that I have only seen matched by works like Spice And Wolf or Assassination Classroom which are masterpieces in their own right. These fantastic characters are further developed as they are placed into a setting that was clearly tailored to explore each of their personalities in intelligent ways and introduce conflicts... more>> that felt both natural and unavoidable. If you are looking for an intelligent thought provoking novel that also maintains a compelling narrative and extremely lovable characters then Nejimaki Seirei Senki - Tenkyou no Alderamin is the novel for you. That being said while I do believe it is a masterful piece of art I cannot reccomend it without a warning that may contain a few spoilers about the overall shape of the plot.
Spoiler

There is simply too much tragedy in this story for me to personally enjoy it to the fullest. It does the work of getting you to love these characters and then uses that against you by torturing them and by extension you. I can’t say that it was a poor writing choice as I don’t believe that every story needs to have a happy ending, but I personally don’t enjoy a story going out of its way to make me sad. So if you are used to crying with your characters then you will have no problems with this novel but don’t come into it expecting there to be any hope left by the end.

In hopes of someone picking up this series for translation... I'm so happy it has been picked up again! I really loved to read this and basically binged it the first time. Now I'm re-reading it to remind me what has happened before going to newer chapters and it is still highly entertaining even with second read.

Good build up for the story so far. As a person reading mostly fantasy novels I highly recommend this if you like this genre. I also like the romance and military theme in this... more>> particular story but the best part is definitely great interaction and bantering between characters that are likable.

A great story that tackles corruption, duty and relationships. This novel has plucked multiple heartstrings of mine. The author was able to produce a light yet detailed story-telling and gave it a bitter yet sweet ending. This novel is surely not for everyone. First of all, the novel starts ok, not great or bad, just ok, with the classical lazy genius that dreams of spending his life leisurely but can't because of reason. Also, there is another MC beside Ikta, called Yatori, she is straight up a Mary Sue, and the story will make damn sure you are aware of that, with her being basically capable of inhuman levels of combat, leadership and charisma, and can never do wrong.

And there is where the trouble starts, with the novel unable to decide if it... more>> wants to be a military novel with Ikta as the center, or an action novel with Yatori beating up everyone, so you have parts where you just finished an awesome campaign against the every using your brain, but suddenly a super powered enemy appears when nobody expected and here comes Yatori to save the day, in every single volume.

Also, every person in the side of the enemy is a genius, and in the empire side everyone but the main cast is completely incompetent, so don't expect much there.

Lastly, the plot progression is "train wreck" bad, meaning that you know it's horrible, but you can't look away for some morbid reason.

Just read if you have nothing else in your reading list right now <<less

The Man Who Was Too Lazy To Fail Goes To War!

Vaguely Napoleonic in tactics, Indian in geography, fantasy by setting and drama by genre. This is one of the better light novels that I have read. The characters are well developed. Their motivatations are understandable. And the inevitability of human nature to make an absolute mess out of any given situation.

I'm really enjoying it, and the anime (available on crunchyroll) is highly entertaining as well.
