Not long after Ning Wan was ‘banished’ to a rural neighbourhood by Zhengyuan Law Firm headquarters, a second victim was exiled to join her.

Vivacious, tall, handsome, a complete gentleman, he exuded the unique aura…

…of a character likely to die off-screen in a historical drama. Were he to become a community lawyer, he would surely end up berated by middle-aged aunties until he cried a river and came to doubt life. He was a big, silly softie, a newbie easy to pick on!

Ning Wan decided that she would beat this poor neglected novice into shape—

“Fu Zheng, isn’t it? Newcomers here must be obedient and discerning.”

“When I dig a pit, you’ll fill it in. When I eat meat, you’ll drink the broth. When I head east, you can’t head west. In short, consider me your God in this remote wilderness beyond the reach of the government.”

Although a little silly, the newbie was handsome, obedient, and tactful. She developed a soft spot for him and decided to impart the ultimate skills she had cultivated for a lifetime: how to shift the blame; how to loaf on the job; how to pay lip service to the boss.

She was very sincere, holding nothing back—

“Truthfully, my unique skills are not without cost. I advise you to like me as soon as possible. Let me analyze the advantages and disadvantages of liking me…”

That big, silly softie, Fu Zheng, succumbed to her coercion and temptation. From that day on, he devoted himself to Ning Wan.

Half a year later, Ning Wan attended the annual meeting at headquarters. There, she was introduced to the new senior partner…

A vivacious, tall, handsome gentleman.

“Hello everyone, I’m Fu Zheng,” he grinned. “I joined this firm to get rid of the bad atmosphere, such as: shifting the blame, loafing on the job, and paying lip service to the boss…”

‘Fu Zheng, you—! Goddammit! This is fraud!’

This novel is a great mix of serious, realistic cases and romantic or situational comedy. The main characters both have strengths and flaws, both actually have quite a bit of character development. The author's point of view is at the same time realistic and compassionate.

I can really recommend this novel and can see myself rereading it in the future.

PS: Having studied law myself, I actually disagree with another reviewer's opinion that the lawyering aspect was unrealistic. Sure, if you only do commercial law for big firms, the most important... more>> thing is to use the law brilliantly. But when it comes to normal people's lives, there are lots of practical obstacles to getting what you want or even deserve by using the proper law channels. Some things the law cannot solve. And in China a lot of people still see it as losing face or airing their dirty laundry in public if you go to court. A Chinese law professor told me in 2012 that it is still hard to convince people to go to court instead of solving everything privately.

i don’t even usually review stuff, and I want to give this story a chance since everybody else is giving this a high rating. No problem with the translations btw, very good in that aspect, but I always get pissed after reading chapters just because FL is too nosy and assuming. I get that the ML is some rich brat, and this was supposed to be the character growth/humor arc, but FL is just always up in his business and forcing him to comply to her. Like, everything ML had... more>> to do/buy is because FL insists him to do/buy. And idk, she’s supposedly smart but her conclusions about ML are always off and even though it’s out of her compassionate heart, she just ends up making me uncomfortable because of how forceful she is, and it just makes her look s*upid in my mind. Like she’s the epitome of “it’s the thoughts that matter” but she’s also annoying in a lot of instances, including bragging and looking down on ML’s fake identity. She has her reasons but I just find her (and tbh sometimes ML) so insufferable in almost all chapters and it’s just going and going and going (i’m still at chapter 35). I just hope SHE can also have some character development ‘cause if not, ML, you’re so strong to like that kind of person. <<less

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

ML was really annoying in the first few chapters but after that I started finding him cute! Like a silly dog!

BUT HE'S NOT A SILLY DOG AT ALL! HE'S A GREEN TEA MAN!

FL is really good. I like her a lot.

The plot of the novel is really good. There is many things that makes me laugh a lot, although there was no sweet and fluffy or heartwarming relationship in novel. So if you search for that, this novel isnt the answer.

I hope you guys dont really come to read because of the romance, because the romance thing iin here is subtle and if you come for romance, I think you will a lil bit dissapointed. But you know, I really have fun in reading this novel. So yeah you have... more>> to read this. <<less

It is so good that this is the first time I felt the need to write a review. The story is really too funny and too good! I MTL everything already.

There are misunderstandings but it's not due to lack of communication or anything too dramatic. It's more like it's essential for the plot to move.

I kinda suspect that the author is lawyer cause the case analysis are so good.

I would love another ending but meh I'm good where they at 😃

A workplace story that focuses more on work than romance. Some of the cases that FL deals with are quite poignant. In particular, the domestic abuse case that came up about 40-ish chapters in really stuck with me. It may be a little triggering, so do take caution when reading.

ML is not my favorite. His lying is built into the premise of the story, but it's only entertaining until it isn't. At a certain point, he's really just taking advantage of FL by means of her kindheartedness. 2nd ML doesn't... more>> do much either other than serve as a foil/punching bag for ML.

The romance is a cute, slow burn that doesn't really start kicking in in earnest until the last 15 or so chapters. FL and ML progress so naturally into love that when it happens, nothing feels rushed or out of the blue. Instead, there exists an equal give and take between FL and ML. I personally enjoy a bit more drama in my romance stories, but this is great for anyone who enjoys slice of life. <<less

This novel is extremely hilarious. The female lead has a really unique personality and her way of handling problems is really interesting. Considering how much the male lead is going through in part due to the female lead I am really anticipating what she will do once she learns his real identity. I highly recommend reading this novel.

This is really a very interesting and funny story. There are many funny scenes between MC and ML. They fell in with each other slowly. Concept is somewhat new as it's related to lawyers.

Omg! This book is such a gem!!! MC is just too funny. Sometimes, due to having different wavelengths, MC misunderstands ML which leads to hilarious moments eg ... more>>
Spoiler

ML sprained his ankle and twisted his waist moving furniture but he wanted to act cool and not tell MC. MC mistakenly thought he was suffering from hemorrhoids as ML was walking funny as if something was stuck in his butt. She interpreted his attitude as being too shy and embarrassed to tell her so she went out and bought for him a float to sit on and told him "Here, you understand". ML was happy thinking she was so concern about him and bought him a unique cushion 🤣. He was so flabbergasted when he found out through his friend that the "cushion" was actually for hemorrhoids

Another instance was when MC's mom called Spa 死吧 (si ba means to go die) and complaining that it was such an inauspicious name

The book also touches on some cases they enounter as lawyers. Though the cases are not very detailed and you can already guess the outcome in most cases but this added the human touch to the novel especially the case of spousal abuse, it brought tears to my eyes.

I've noticed that this author likes to write about the interactions between MC and ML and their journey to couplehood rather than their romance. Romance doesn't start till the last 1/5 of the book which makes me feel a little unfulfilled but overall, still a solid 4.5/5. <<less

This novel is great. I find it a great read and the FL is stubborn at times, but that sometimes leads to more misunderstandings. Its really funny. I'm at chapter 17 p2.

Spoiler

The ML lies to the FL about his living situation to gain her sympathy after a bad first impression, but that only causes him to gain a harder time due to his lies. I love how he suffers due to his lies, and the FL really does stand up for people in dangerous situations, which I like. I know her trying to help the ML due to the 's*xual harassment is for comedic effect as its s misunderstanding that becomes a bigger and bigger lie for the ML, but the way she tried to help is nice and admirable.

It was fun until the the ML started lying to the MC and emotionally manipulating her.

Spoiler

It starts in chapter 13 and isn't revealed to her until the second half of chapter 68. That's less than ten chapters before the end including the extras.

Ermmm please remind me to avoid this author's 'lawyer' series from now on. Blegh 🤢

I did tried reading this since people are going gaga over it and I thought it'd be fun read since I love, love law and court drama and some of my coworkers are law graduates. I found the cases so real and down-to-earth, though they weren't what I'd expect to appear in a law novel and MC's solution was often not what I figured a lawyer would do. I think that's because the author doesn't know... more>> much or bother to research about what lawyers do, so the cases that appeared were more like something a family consultant or small neighborhood police station would cover.

At first glance you'd think that this MC was an unconventional lawyer with unconventional solution, but how MC worked... *cringe* actually it wasn't how a lawyer work. Do correct me if I'm wrong, but lawyers are bound within the strict code of rules, and they're sworn into it. They must have a good understanding about definitions, how to get the real facts and how to work around it to their advantage. Half-baked law graduates with minimal knowledge about the law in their country wouldn't even bother to register for the bar exam.

I almost drop this novel early into the game because the author obviously doesn't care much about a believable lawyer for a believable lawyer's sake, this one's like an insult to the profession. From this novel alone I wouldn't want to read any of their... 'lawyer' novel series. I feel that the translator cared more about researching a lawyer than author did lol

MC's personality... Left a lot to be desired. But it's actually quite realistic, you'd find many 'hard-working and experienced' graduates from subpar uni who interacted with their junior co-workers from better uni would act exactly like MC did, all high and mighty with their noses turned up, ready to give 'motivational' sermon at working hours unasked who thought that they were giving up precious ancestral secrets. I don't even want to know how she could possibly be considered an SSR-level lawyer before she moved to the current unit. I'm honestly worried about the quality of chinese lawyers and the quality of their law school after reading this novel.

Don't be fooled by the cutesy plot description, what actually happened was a muddle-headed 'lawyer' who doesn't know much about law pretending to be a good senior, with all her hostile bias and ungrounded bigotry towards someone she doesn't know much. Besides, what kind of lawyer would judge someone's personality at first glance and based on a phone call? Did the author thought that they were writing a psychologist or neighborhood police novel? 🤣 even a fanfic has more research than this novel. <<less
