Yuan Ye and film emperor Fang Shaoyi were married for ten years. After a stamp from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, they got divorced and their red booklets became green booklets. Back when they had gotten married, they had proudly announced the news to the whole world. After their divorce, though, neither dared to speak up, determined to hide this development.

Film emperor gong vs writer shou. Regarding accompaniment, regarding companionship. Regarding those things inseparable and difficult to speak of about affection.

Summarized in one phrase: We were in love for thirteen years, and then we got divorced.

DNF. The reason for the divorce (which you don't find out until like halfway through) is cruel and inane. MC gets punished for a mere slip of the tongue. If this is what 10 years of devotion gets you... MC, leave the damn man. Plotline around the ML's acting gigs bored me to tears, and the sole Taiwanese character in the book ends up being the bad guy which I personally found offputting.

Rating: 3/5- I dropped this around chapter 50. I usually love angst, but this was not angst- it really was not my type of book but I commend the skilful writing and passably likeable characters. Also excellent translation, CG is truly my favorite set of translators!

I don't think this book was written for a reader like me. The pacing was so frustrating and illogical but I tried so hard to persevere because I'd enjoyed the author's previous work "Tattoo", but it felt like I was clawing out my own eyes... more>> as each chapter passed.

Eventually I started skimming through chapters because for the life of me, I could not understand why the author would leave the reason for their divorce towards the end of the book. Perhaps some people like being led by the nose but it made everything feel really anti-climactic when the MC boldly announces he will pursue the ML, only to make you think was there really ever a need for him to do so?

The reason for this divorce was plain spite and honestly there was no need for the MC to try to emphatically win over the ML because the ML insisted on doing what he did even when the MC stated clearly that he didn't want to divorce.

In my opinion to plainly hurt a person for making a mistake by using divorce as punishment, is cruel. The ML clearly intended on hurting the MC the entire time simply because the MC did what he always did- spoke before thinking. After realising the reason for the divorce I didn't feel the need to finish this book.

Maybe because I'm a child of divorced parents, to see someone do this to another person because they were upset and being spiteful and because there were problems that they didn't bother to work through first; I eventually felt that this story made divorce look like a joke to this couple. As a means of punishment because the dynamics of a relationship were changing.

I couldn't continue after feeling that way. I'm not really disappointed with the book, the author writes beautifully, but this story became a trigger for me emotionally and I didn't want to delve into that. If people don't have qualms or personal attachments to divorce then you may feel differently when reading this book- but it was a big no for me. <<less

This tells a surprisingly believable and mature story about what happens after two people get together and were in love for a long time-- what happens after the 7-year-itch?

Neither of the couple are really to blame for their divorce, and they still remember and feel deeply for each other. This is a story of them stumbling back together slowly, figuring out what they themselves are "now" past the bubbles of the first love, and how to fit back together again.

Spoiler

It's said that the ML forced the MC to sign the papers, but from my reading of the situation, it was clear that the MC let loose his mouth and actually wanted a divorce in the moment of anger, which hurt the ML deeply. So instead of forgiving him for that moment of anger, the ML pushed back. I understood it as one of the first and few times the ML truly expressed his feelings in such a way (and it was devastating for them both). However, I found it extremely understandable.

Yes, people do say hurtful things when they are angry and regret it afterwards, but some things once said, you can't always just take back. Actions do have consequences.

[collapse]

The portrayal of the showbiz scene was also one of the more mature takes I've seen. It's not all wine and roses for the actors and sets. I admire the author for lightly touching on the dark side (and not in a casual or humorous way).

I'm surprised by the reviewers who are troubled by the MC chasing the ML? Literally 99% of NU is ML chasing MC (het or BL) so please show yourself out and pick a different novel if you don't want variety.

Frankly, I love pro-active and strong MCs and couples that are equal (instead of being some caricature of het relationships where the top/"man" is all powerful and chases/dotes on the bottom/"woman"), so this was my jam. <<less

Most fluff bls have that sweet, youthful love which we crave to read. But what happens afterwards like 10, 20, 30 years. Does our couple remain the same ?. This story tells about the beginning of their love which is sweet like candy and how after 10 years of marriage they divorced. They do separated but not because they didn't love each other rather with time, gap comes as it happens in most relationships. MC asks for divorce and ML gives him. But their love is still there. Even though... more>> separated for a year, pain is still there.

This novel deals with emotions. It isn't all sunny like other showbiz ones where we get so see cliche role stealing then a ceo coming with investment rather we get to see more darker part, compromises done by crew. This novel has more realism.

I am a fluff reader but I feel things like this should be read once a while.

Most novels have cliche setting of how when they try to again mend their relationship, they do to bed but here they didn't because it wouldn't help them solve root cause of their relationship problem, which I actually like.

MC considers ML as his moon and ML considers as MC as his light/warmth.

It shows how communication in between couples with passing years affect relationship. ~ Both MC n ML learn from their past mistakes and mend their relationship.

Usually I don't read antgst (a start) but I like this one. It doesn't have those typical cliche antgst rather more realistic one. Even antgst is filled with sweetness. <<less

The beginning was amazing, well written, well translated, interesting characters. I stayed up until dawn reading it was that good. Even though I thought the ML was a bit boring and dull, I was really rooting for them to get back together. But the further into the story it got, the more it became apparent that the ML is a petty, spiteful, vindictive, gas-lighting, and petulant little man-child. After learning the reason for the divorce, I cannot continue to read another word of this novel, and I just want to... more>> scream at MC to run far away and never look back. Find somebody, anybody, better.

I had been getting more and more frustrated as the chapters went on but from 50 onwards? Wow.
Spoiler

All because ML wanted to punish MC for not revolving around ML every moment of every day. And then when they start to get back together, he goes and punishes him again. Again for nothing.

[collapse]
Forgive me, but I do not believe that any relationship can be happy or healthy if one partner punishes the other for imaginary infractions, or you know, at all. I understand they’re going for realism with flawed characters, but the imbalance of power in this relationship is beyond belief. <<less

Y'all up for some drama? Cause I am.

The MC and ML just divorced, but end up shooting a couples TV-show while hiding their divorce. You'll see their current situation and their past is told through flashbacks. It has this "how did we end up like this" setting: not only their love changed with time, but also their characters. Some small things, however, are left unchanged.
Perfect development story.

The shou is also not your typical shou. No white lotus shit, but a guy who can stand up for himself (nothing wrong... more>> if you can't, but it's just finally something diffirent). He is also one hell of a gangster man lmao. Bc of stereotypes I mistook him for the gong. <<less

I don't know what's wrong with chasing someone unless they're in a relationship already. But I really like the bitter sweetness in this novel. It's realistic with that underlining humanities present. The fact we can have a second chance if we choose it.

Love the translator too. Thank you.

YuanHe, Fang ShaoYi.
As expected from Tattoo writer, I love the novel to its tiny bits. The writer has certain charm in the way she wrote her stories, it's calm, with undertone angst, yet still so sickeningly sweet.

And I actually read comment accusing writer has kinks about shou chasing the gong??? LIKE WTF???
Ain't it's the charming point?
We got MC who has radiant personality, a headstrong, know what he wants and actually do something to get the man he wants! In a whole danmei world, our MC is such... more>> a rare gem!
We also got ML who may be seem stoic but actually such a warm, gentle, and attentive person. He may seems like a passive party, but he actually just love our MC so much and let him do whatever he want to do. "What could you want that I wouldn't give you?"

They fell in love during their youth, get married, get divorced, and then slowly working on their relationship once again as their love is still very much there between them.
They realized that marriage is not simply all about love and they learn about it.
The dynamics between them is really endearing. <<less

Ahaha, I pity the ML's manager, cleaning all the mess after the divorce. Since a yr after the divorce, MC kept in touch (most of the times) with ML's assistant, showing concern for ML whenever the assistant lure (chat) the MC ?

This one is well written. Probably the downside for me is their divorce. They can have a cool-off instead, since both still have feelings for each other. It is well described, the changes that lead to divorce. But divorce someone only when u have no feeling for him. Well,... more>> it's in line with mc's personality anyway, being impulsive (but it also shows that he doesn't grow up mentally since he's already 33).

Another thing I dislike is the ML's phrase for MC, "His monkey had been wild for too long and didn't recognize his owner anymore. He needed to be taught a lesson". I really dislike this phrase. It seems he only sees the MC as an object. Though he loves the MC. Also the ML is kinda shameless too, waiting for the MC to pursue him.

I feel bad whenever the MC got the end of the stick everytime he pursued or got in touch with ML.

(1) Shooting the reality show with ML: the guy little director in Australia shooting and Lin wei, used MC as stepping stone to promote himself and the reality show respectively.

(2) MC applied as screenwriter for the ML: Director Jiang lowered the price of MC as screenwriter <<less

I came here from "Tattoo", the author's other story. Because I like Tattoo a lot, I want to try author's another story. I was a bit hesitant after reading mix reviews but I still tried.

Author is really good at story telling and I thought I really like this story while reading first half. I find a lot of excuses for ML behaviour and thought ML loves MC a lot.

but when I reached the part where he forced MC signed divorce paper, I cannot stand anymore. May be I'm not understanding the situation clear because I read it with MTL, I cannot sympathetic him at all. He was like you hurt me and I'll hurt you more behaviour. He only care that MC once think of giving up and flet hurt but not thinking from MC side at all.

[collapse]

I personally think MC is too giving and ML is taking advantage of this. In real life, there are indeed couples like this but it's not satisfying to read as a romance story for me.

I give three stars for Author's beautiful writing and translator's skillful translation. <<less

I decided to write a review because this is one of my favourite danmei novels and FSY is one of my favourite MLs. I've read hundreds of danmeis, but this is probably the one work that touched me the most.

FSY is a very nuanced character, and I think a lot of readers don't fully understand him, hence the low ratings. He isn't a petty character who is using the divorce and the aftermath to "punish" MC. Rather, it's the complete opposite.

The reason they divorced is because

Spoiler

MC was always the one making sacrifices for ML's career. However, MC wasn't the only person burdened by the one-sidedness of their relationship. ML was aware of MC's sacrifices, and he also felt like his job was forcing MC to change and destroying his original values. Because of this, ML was under a huge amount of pressure and essentially held hostage by MC's "good intentions". Neither of them did anything wrong, but because they didn't know how to properly communicate, these problems festered until they ended up divorcing.

[collapse]

The author mentions their ages a lot because the divorce stemmed from MC entering a new stage of life and essentially having a mid-life crisis. Also, a large part of their communication issues started from their age gap when they first got together.

Spoiler

Because they got together when MC was an immature underage kid

[collapse]

Although neither side can be considered the villain in their divorce, the way MC treated ML is definitely unfair. MC views ML as a perfect unshakeable god who only cares about acting. He puts ML up on a pedestal and idolizes ML due to their older bro / younger bro relationship dynamic. Due to this
Spoiler

he unilaterally decides ML doesn't need him anyway, and ML should choose his acting career over his marriage with MC. The reason ML was so angry was because MC completely disrespected their feelings for each other. ML also made sacrifices for the relationship. ML married him publicly even though it would have a huge impact on his career. Despite this, MC decided on his own that their relationship was less important than ML's success as an actor. His reaction was to give up instead of fighting for their marriage. This is what pissed ML off.

[collapse]

In a certain sense, MC is a little self-centred, because he doesn't understand how ML feels. Instead of trying to understand him, MC just views ML as this beautiful, frigid bodhisattva who only cares about his art and is above all mortal affairs.

The only place where ML was really wrong was when he
Spoiler

broke his contract and didn't properly explain his thinking to MC.

[collapse]
However, I think this was mostly due to a difference in personality. ML is more reserved, and he doesn't care about things outside of their relationship and his job. I think he genuinely couldn't understand why MC would be so upset about it afterward, and MC never explained it to him because they don't communicate, so it's not really his fault.

Very cute and rare gong chasing crematorium. FSY not really caring about what other people do or say is a lot like the ML from A Cupful of Spilt Water, but I feel like FSY's characterization is a lot more realistic. <<less

Like many others I read this because of the author's other story Tattoo. Although the author has a great writing style and truly knew how to set the scene, I was disappointed.

At first I was really rooting for the ML and MC to get back together. MC seemed regretful and melancholy about it all so I assumed things were his fault.

After I started reading I realized that...

Spoiler

The ML is a petty bastard. He was too jealous for MC talking with another male character for an hour so he picked a fight and they had hate s*x. To the point where the MC was bruised the next day.

Again. It was like a one hour conversation with a younger man who was already in a relationship. But the ML was a dickhead and took things too far; MC had balls everywhere except to tell the ML no and went along with it. Ugh.

Then the ML let MC take the fall for the "crazy" night when it was the ML who started the sh*t to begin with. Not to mention the MLS pov from there on out was that MC needed to be punished and to recognize his owner.

THE f*ck?????

They bring out the worst in each other.

[collapse]

I wound up dropping this book around chapter 27 or 28. I couldn't take ML's awful behavior. He didn't seem happy until the METS world revolved around him. It is just completely toxic.

Now having seen other people's reviews +spoilers I know I was right about the ML being a narcissist and borderline sociopath.

It's really a shame. <<less

This novel was very good, I loved how the author potrayed the difficulties of marriage. I loved the couple's interaction. It teaches us that love in itself is not enough to keep a relationship going. I personally don't agree w some reviews that down-rated the novel because they didn't like the ML's behaviour. It's pretty realistic to explode at someone who you've spent ten years cherishing if they tell you that they think your relationship will rot into something ugly lol.

And it's clear he was aware of his own impulsivity, based on how he tried to get back with the MC (albeit, very awkwardly). If anything, I thought the ML's emotional outbursts made him more complex.

Pacing was great too.

My only problem, was:

Spoiler

I was soooo tired of the author repeating the MC & ML's ages. Especially with the phrase 'together, their ages added up to over seventy...' I think I saw it at least a dozen times.

Like we get it!! They're middle-aged! No need to mention it twice a chapter. It's like the author projected onto her own story and conveyed to us her own mid-life crisis. If it hadn't been that, I would've rated this 5 stars.

A bittersweet, complex, and nuanced relationship. Love past its prime, feelings held for so long they turn sour. Mistakes, apologies, and healing. This novel felt very mature, and very human.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but after reading so many frivolous and silly, golden-thigh-hugging, cliche stories of OP, rich, beautiful, virtuously flawless characters, this story was very grounding and refreshing. The characters aren't superfluous youth. The subject matters are mature.

A few days after completing the entire work, I'm still in awe at how well it was written. The... more>> non-linear story telling was very interesting - as a reader in the moment, it was frustrating, but having finished it, I thought it was very clever and good story telling.

The angsty tone of this was very well delivered. The story is slow-paced, and that pulls you into the heartache of the characters, who have so much history between them. Time truly does pass so slow when you're suffering. There were moments where I felt that it was a bit too slow, but overall, the story is pretty short, so I wasn't displeased.

The ML was a bit ambiguous, but his emotions, when they're eventually revealed, feel very heartfelt and sincere. It's clear they're both truly trying to become better characters. One of my favourite moments was when the manly, gong-like, cold and hardboiled ML
Spoiler

openly admitted "It makes me feel panicked when you act like that" (not sic). It was pretty early on in their relationship re-development, and surprised me a fair bit.

[collapse]

I also liked the very real and grounding displays of intimacy. When I read about billionaire actors buying houses and signing multimillion dollar deals to spoil their partner, well, sure it's cute but it's not relatable or touching. But having the actor ML, tired after a long day of work, lie on his ex-husband MC's lap so the MC can apply skincare to ML's face, and eventually fall asleep there? That's a very realistic depiction of intimacy and closeness, makes you feel their long-lasting but troubled love, where they know each other so well and feel safe with each other, even while knowing the other has the ability to hurt them so deeply.

More than throwing money at their problems, the small things like the MC worrying when he sees the temperature outside because he knows the ML's old injuries hurt him when it gets humid, but feeling unsure about whether or not he can express his concern because of their history and current status - the small details really pull the work together and sell the emotional confliction which is the backbone of the story.

There are a few things that I thought were a bit... eh.
Spoiler

Like the casual treatment of a r*pe of a side character... that was too heavy and not treated as seriously as it should have been. Or the ML's behaviour/comments at times, like "His monkey had been wild for too long and didn't recognize his owner anymore. He needed to be taught a lesson." That was a bit much, especially at that point in the story, and I had an unfavourable impression of the ML at first. However, it may be that the writing of the ML's POV as a whole is not as strong as the MC's, the MC is much more well-fleshed and relatable/understandable. The ML does treat the MC very well, all things considered.

[collapse]

The side character story was also very... why. I would personally recommend entirely ignoring that subplot and the last extra chapter. The main story is done very well, but the side characters were very undeveloped, and so their 'ending' was really unsatisfying, and I actually didn't even finish it because I knew it would ruin the taste of an otherwise really good novel. If it had been given more time throughout the novel, it may have felt less out of place, but as it was, the last extra is very sudden and has a really different tone than the rest of the story.

But overall, the story is very interesting. One theme I really liked was the recognition of how dirty the entertainment world really is and how a truly moral person can't accept it so easily. When I first started reading entertainment webnovels, I had the same attitude as the MC, and was utterly disgusted and angered by the behaviour that everyone seemed to support so much, all this petty blackening and slandering, blackmailing, s*xual favours, etc. But as I read more, I slowly became more like the ML - willing to turn a blind eye to this gross, greedy, selfish, corruption as long as it supported those who I like, or gave interesting faceslapping plots. I really appreciate the MC, and the ML for recognizing this purity and wanting so badly to protect it. I appreciate the reminder that I shouldn't be willing to accept dirtiness just because it's common, this was a good reminder of my morality.

This isn't a story about a fresh, youthful spring; it's a story of lovers overcoming a cold winter. If you're looking for something mature, grounded, bittersweet and angsty but ultimately with a HE, I'd recommend this to you. It's definitely one of my favourites, for sure. <<less

This... Isn't this too painful?

The novel is well done, raw and realistic. A story about two men who loves each other so much even after their divorce. The divorce part is very painful but both of them are also very stubborn. Then again, if you read the whole novel, you'll realize that their divorce is a much needed one.

Both of them are mature and they know what they're doing. It's sweet its painful. It bittersweet. There are some times that I am frustrated with the ML as it kind of... more>> feels like he's leading the MC on, but then again, they both love each other.

I am also pained with the side couple. The gong is emotionally constipated while the shou thinks too lowly of himself. Shou is also very mature and not clingy, but his love is also pure and deep— maybe one can even call it obsession.

It's really boring. I saw it had many reviews rating it highly but I don't see the appeal. I think it's too slice-of-life for me.

It also keeps mentioning 'this day' and 'that day' when talking about their past and it gets really confusing. I also can't distinguish when it starts describing the present again. I'm not sure if it's the author or the translator. However, Chrysanthemum Garden has always translated superbly so I'd say it's the author that phrased it weirdly, making it off-putting.

I don’t understand how this novel is rated so high, maybe its because its from the same author as tattoo or maybe because people were in need of a novel where the shou is after the gong. Anyway I don’t find a problem in either of this. I freaking love getting back together stories. What I dont like is the Ml/gong. He’s controlling and manipulative, does he really love the mc? Maybe yeah, but its like an accessory, like a watch or a pet. And he doesnt change. The MC... more>> must chance otherwise they are done. Most of the time he’s like oh the MC is hurt, oh well.
