My favourite Chinese webnovel. It's not quite 'meta', but it does subvert or ignore several of the normal Wuxia tropes. It's nice to have an MC who is not overpowered from the jump; he fails repeated, has to run away, or has to rely on his companions. It also manages to avoid harems, and even romance for the most part.

If you want a Wuxia that is not the standard 'weak-to-strong swordsman fighting the sects and ascending to godhood', definitely give this a read.

Why do I read the negative reviews? WHY? It took me too long to start reading this novel because of some bad reviews. It is a chinese novel so it has defects (a lot), it has plot armor yes but that's inevitable and I'm already used to it.

It has a lot of good points, for example:

  • He doesn't get to save everyone
  • He isn't OP from the start and it takes him a while
  • He doesn't get everything for free
  • It has some interesting characters some with a little bit of development
  • Some nice world building
  • Has a base and grows his territory
  • NO s*upid YOUNG MASTER TROPE, I mean I don't hate the usual s*upid young master here and there but there are some novels that abuse this too much
  • The pets are cute and don't get abused/forgotten/else I mean they are like his children and they are fukin adorable even Silly bird (for me the pets are the best part of the novel)
It is somewhat rushed at the end. You get your conclusion and it is OK but it would have been nice to have another 10-20 chapters to close everything a little bit better, specially the lil' ones you don't get much of them at the end and that made me sad I'm really gonna miss them.

Anyway it is a really entertaining novel. It... more>> is refreshing on some ways and it is worth the read. Those that dropped it most likely have read too many chinese novels or are too picky, if you give this one a chance you are in for a treat.

Thank you Fang Xiang I really enjoyed this story. <<less

One of my favourite Xuanhuans. If you like Kingdom building novels this one is definitely worth a look.

This story is about a boy with mysterious origins struggling through the tough world of cultivation. Initially he has simple interests of being a cultivation farmer but as circumstances change he is forced to adapt. In a world with three main factions/ races, the MC goes on a journey of both getting stronger and carving out a piece of the world to call home. He is taught by spirit advisers along the way... more>> and builds a team of immense talent from scratch.

The cultivation levels are solid albeit blurred by the end. This novel has far fewer tiers than a typical xianxia does but fills in the gap by letting the MC explore other paths like formations and forging.

If you like money grubber protagonists like MH from ISSTH then you'll like this MC! However, there is virtually no romance in this novel which may be off putting for some.

The translations are well done especially the translator notes which remind you who old characters are when they reappear in the story. The one thing to be aware of with the translations is a lot of pinyin (Chinese terms) are used which can be hard to follow at first.

The end is satisfactory but slightly rushed like many Chinese novels. Other than that, it was a well paced enjoyable novel. <<less

Overall when in comparison to other wuxia type stories, this is actually quite good. We start with a guy who has a history of memory loss where the story begins as a standard wuxia novel in his sect. He grows in his abilities and powers within the sect until the story changes direction.

The next phase is more of an armies and management phase. In this phase we are introduced to the MC's companions for the rest of the story. There is also the growth of those companions along side his own. Durring this phase we learn of the nature of the 'world' that seems to be made up of islands within a void connected by verious rivers.

The third phase comes along where a new type of energy is 'reintroduced' into the world. The MC's faction has already grown but this new type of energy creates massive disturbances into the power structure of the 'world'. At this point once again the MC's faction takes a massive lead in several areas of growth.

The final phase I will call the ten years later phase. Having had a massive battle the MC and some of his companions are greatly injured and lost from his faction. The verious factions have stabilized in a growth situation where they are each increasing in power. In this phase the MC establishes a 'hidden' faction and finally completes their revenge on their old enemies.

Overall this how the story flows and there is a lot of things that are interesting about it. Yet to me it was somewhat irritating to read as well. The nature of the world made it seem confusing, but I also think that it would probably in general make a rather interesting game.

The Good parts.

Very decent MC personality wise. Farming part at the start is very fun and fresh to read. The military actually mattering in a cultivation novel is rare and an expert can be killed with a simple strategy of fight few with many which is great when a lot of novels will simply use the army as a way to make the MC/villain look cool and strong (why even build an army if it can be killed by 1 person, just focus on building strong persons). The faction/nation building... more>> was fun to read. There are more characters than the MC that actually matter, its ridiculous how few cultivation novels seem to focus on teamwork and even this one doesn't do it enough imo.

The Bad parts

This novel is too short, it needs to be about 40% longer at least, a lot of the plot and build up gets abandoned or not resolved satisfyingly. The ending is rushed and a lot of events that could have been amazing get a few paragraphs explaining what happened instead of the chapters they deserved. MC goes into killer mode way too quickly, this actually took me out of the story for a bit - He is this nice cultivator in the beginning of the novel and is mostly focused on farming and when he first kills an enemy he doesn't even get phased by it. The adventurer parts of this novel are full of plot armor and enemies doing unrealistic moves to make it possible for our great MC to win, he also gets way to many treasures handed to him and so few of them actually end up mattering.

Overall this was a pretty fresh reading experience for me and I would say worth a read but if you start not enjoying it then just quit reading, ending kind of sucks anyway <<less

Finished this one a while ago and thought I'd commented before but I guess not. first off let me start by saying I love zuo mo; he's one of my top three all time favorite webovel MCs. that doesn't stop me from realizing that this story has its flaws.

Like others have mentioned this story could be divided into two separate novels. the front half is a 5 star with great world building, wonderfully quirky characters and and a well-designed well thought out plot, the second half is between a 2... more>> and 3 and gets really, really... messy. perhaps the author only had the first half outlined ahead of time, or maybe the story got axed so it needed a rushed ending, I dunno. a lot of things gets skipped over or rushed through, or ignored completely.

Also, in the second half the author suffers from POV diarrhea, crapping them out all over the place for no good reason (same problem in the more recent arcs of avalon of the five elements). it's fine if there are two or three, or even the occasional five POVs but the second half of the story follows everyone, including a bunch of shmucks who only end up dead in the next chapter anyways. you go through chapters and chapters only to get one paragraph about our MC before the author moves on to more chapters about more people I don't care about. annoying doesn't begin to describe it.

Lastly, the ending left me feeling unsatisfied. I love brother mo but the later half of the story was painful to read at times. after wavering between a rating of three or four I decided to go with the four because the first half of the story is really worth it. if only the second part was eve half as good as the first I'd rate it a five. sadly, it's not. <<less

First time doing a review so bear with me. I'll try not to spoil anything.

The story follows a young guy who has no memories of his past life. Living his life while trying to earn money to live more comfortably he gets pulled into the matters of cultivation, fights, world. He's cunning, decisive, protective of his own. Based on this description you'll think that there's tons of MCs like him but when you start reading you'll figure it out that he's actually unique. He doesn't cultivate to fight, he's not... more>> interested in the way of the sword, fists or anything, he just wants money to live a comfortable life but life ain't that easy.
Following Zou Mo in this story you'll laugh with him, you'll cry with him and you'll have the urge to kill with him. That's the kind of guy he is, he'll pull you into his circle and you won't leave.

I can honestly say that this is the best novel I read out of the 7 I currently have finished and 7 that I'm reading. In my opinion it's a little better than I Shall Seal The Heavens and it's on par with Renegade Immortal. The only thing you may not like is the ending but if you think about it you'll figure it out why it ended the way it ended.

I'm sorry if I said irrelevant stuff and wasted your time while you're reading my review but I guarantee that you won't waste your time if you want to read World of Cultivation.

P.S. Accidentally rated it as 4/5 but I'll try to correct it to 5/5. <<less

The World of Cultivation is a very interesting story when it comes to cultivation, its characters and its pace being one that prefers to build things up slowly with one of the best cases of world-building for this kind of story. However while it has many fantastic moments, there are shortcomings especially in the latter half of the story.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed most of the story but as other reviewers have already stated, World of Cultivation can be split into two halves to what the story is trying to tell us... more>> and this influences how each chapter is written for the worse. Due to this, while the first 400 or so chapters can easily rate a 5/5 for me, the second half is stuck between a 3/5 and maybe a 3.5/5 due to how much of a mess much of it was.

To describe it, the first half was a well researched paper written by a man who know what he was doing. The second half was more like said man loss his notes and just winged it. The story itself should've been much longer with the content it was exploring instead of rushing through many plot points. This can be seen in how different the pacing of the story is in the first half of the story compared to the second half.

Basically the story can be split into four major parts. The first being the Wu Kong Sword Sect Arc where we are introduced to Zo Mo the ever face frozen zombie farmer trying to make a small living as an Outer Sect Disciple. Many many concepts are introduced here with our protagonist struggling to make a living even when raising up the ranks as his expectations of his goals differs from the expectations of his elders. We are also introduced to many interesting characters who have each unique and fleshed out personalities. However it is sad that by the end of the series, so few even get mentioned let alone play a major part.

Spoiler

Wu Kong Sword Sect basically off-screen gets ens*aved by Big Bad Kun Lun and used as bait against the enemy and almost completely gets wiped out. The Sect leader and Elders? All dead. Almost all of the Inner Disciples? Dead. The Outer Disciples? All dead. The only ones that escape the fate of being killed off are Xiao Guo, Li Ying Feng, Luo Li and Wei Sheng. And even worse is that there is a brief rescue of the former two only to never be mentioned in the story ever again. The latter two were fortunate enough to disappear and eventually reappear in the story later on.

[collapse]

Of course all things need to end and The Beginning of Mo Cloud Sea Faction is the second major Arc of the series till Zo Mo like with the Wo Kong Sword Sect gets separated from everyone else due to circumstances. This Arc changes from the first in the scale of how it does things. The world is at war. Individual strength is no longer supreme and battalions of men become the dominant force for everyone. Frankly the best part of this section of the story is where Zo Mo just gets down and studies and innovates new techniques and concepts for everyone else to use.

Spoiler

The most boring part of this section is the part with the Yao ironically enough. I was enjoying the Golden Crow Camp and Zo Mo's people doing stuff and becoming stronger bit by bit. Then all of a sudden we get introduced to a new cast of people that frankly don't make much of an impact on the story later on. Of course there are many foreshadowing parts that are extremely important to the story though doesn't exclude some horrible pacing and plot points that were cut too short.

[collapse]

The third part of the story is where it goes downhill with the Rise of Shen Power just after Zo Mo's adventure in Mo lands. Shen Power, a concept that was introduced in previous chapters as something lost to the current era 'suddenly' rises up again with apparently every major faction 'secretly' researching it and coming to achieve it all at the same time. Not only that, Shen Power in the series is supremely overpowered in a very different way it was portrayed in the past. It was seen as extremely powerful but simple which contrasts with the current three systems of power that are very complex with many use but weaker compared to Shen Power.

While there were many parts of the third section of the story being enjoyable, I've noticed that much of world building, much of the small things that made this series great and the development of... basically everything was completely consumed by Shen Power.

Spoiler

While the decline of the old and the rise of the new generation where Shen Power will once more become the strongest kind of power out there, the story more or less dropped the ball on this development in the last parts of the story. After a certain point, no one not important isn't using Shen Power. As in, everyone else who doesn't use Shen Power just... disappears from the story and is never mentioned again. Not to mention the focus on what used to be the main cast and their supporting cast gets discarded in favor of new characters in the Mo lands and basically Zo Mo getting one power-up after another which completely contrasts with his character development in the early parts of the story

[collapse]

Then there is the last section of the story known as the shit-hole of plot that leads to the ending which covers maybe the last 100 chapters of the series which is very small for the amount of things that happens. Basically we are eventually (after a time-skip) introduced to God-Level. What is God-Level? Think of how overpowered characters are in other Wuxia series when they go through a certain high enough rank. This is it. No longer are numbers, strategy and tactics the most important thing in a battle. Now it is just the power to literally destroy an entire region.

Spoiler

Not to mention how rushed everything was with too many POV changes and random minor characters getting screen time but not the ones we want. Zo Mo suddenly becomes King of the Mo lands and revives his companions that now barely get any screen time, the Big Bad Lin Qian also becomes God-level but loses to also God-Level Wei Sheng, Zo Mo takes over Yao lands via past scheming of Puo and Wei, Big Bad Kun Lun gets rekted by the power of God-Level Wei Sheng and eventually the final battle is really just the world against Kun Lun where Kun Lun as a whole is forced to surrender, not even getting the final battle death they want. But the ending is the worst part really. Nothing about the aftermath is mentioned before Zo Mo and Wei Sheng go back to where everything started for a brief conversation where the series just... ends. Series, what the hell is the current status of the world? We know nothing beyond the 'final battle'.

[collapse]

Despite my misgivings of the last parts of the story, most of World of Cultivation is really enjoyable. <<less

The start was good, but it all turned into a complete mess later on.

There was like 10 different POVs the 2nd half of the story. It was a complete mess. Worst part of it all, nearly all of em were boring. I found myself skimming chapters being bored...

Gorgeously Large Panda
It's a complete mess later on in the story. The MC gets more annoying and less likeable as the story goes on. He has all the bad and none of the good of Bai Xiao Chun. So many freaking powers get introduced and replaced. The shen power that the MC could only learn due to very lucky encounters? Everyone suddenly starts learning it too! Random person he meet along the way? You're my best bro and I'll kill and die for you!

The war is very boring to read. Too many... more>> characters to keep track on. The power levels seem to be only for show. MC is shown to be able to fight above his level, but at one point he goes up 2 levels but his fighting capability doesn't seem to improve much. And no one seems to be surprised at all even though he just becomes very very powerful (in theory). I gave up because I didn't like being forced to read about a meaningless war I didn't care about. <<less

Ah, World of Cultivation.

A story that has become a part of my daily routine since the moment I started reading it out of curiosity.

Now that it has ended, I feel it is time to share my thoughts on this piece of work.

... more>> But enough of the melodrama, time to get to the review.

Spoilers btw.

***

WoC feels like the author wanted to write an epic about the coming-of-age of a nobody, then it somehow became a failure of a narrative about a man becoming the king to a massive empire. Like he just gave up in the middle and just wanted the story to end. And it shows in how he was pretty in-depth with his details in the first hundred chapters, and then he just said "f*ck it" in the 300 or so chapters before it ended. As if he got tired of writing his story.

Which is sad, really.

***

Another downside to this work is in how it ended abruptly.

I read the defense of the translators/editors with regards to the abrupt ending. And while it does make sense (the story is about Zuo Mo and Wei Sheng from WuKong Sword Sect, not the other cast/other plot points), I still feel like the story could have been given more meat if the author just did not give up. Expound on the relationship on Zuo Mo to KunLun. Expound on what happened to WuKong SS after the YaoMo incursion. Expound on the what happened to the rest of the WuKong SS that Zuo Mo saved.

There is so much things that the author can expound upon that still revolve around Zuo Mo, Wei Sheng, and their debt of gratitude to WuKong SS.

***

As for what WoC did right, worldbuilding would be one of them. It has a very rich cultivation hierarchy, and a diverse set of cultures. The MC was also charming, at least for the chapters when the author was motivated at telling his story. I also like how the supporting cast had some measure of personality, at least until the author just gave up and made the supporting cast as backdrop for the main cast.

Really, I would rate this novel much higher if not for the fact that THE AUTHOR JUST GAVE UP. There is so much elements in the story that would make it entertaining good, if not literary good.

***

On the entertainment scale, 3/5. Decent, entertaining at the chapters before author gave up. Became a grind after that.

On the literary scale, 2/5. Okay start, charming MC, albeit a bit stiff in the personality department (pun intended). Supporting cast have actual personalities too. And then the author gave up. So I gave up too. <<less

After around 700 chapters into the book I want tell you guys what I think about this novel. Not in a comprehensive review but in a short text where I just tell you how I feel about the story till now.

Tbh I love the premise, love the characters, love the world but this novel suffers from a disease very common to long novels. Repetition. You can't just write 900 chapters of original content if your not some incredible talented author and sadly Fang Xiang is not one of them.

The whole... more>> book can be separated into two parts till chapter 719 and I am 99, 99% certain that there will be a third part.

Part 1: The premise (Chapter 1-100)

We're starting with the extraordinary event that gives the MC better potential/more power and a glimpse on where the story is heading. Characters are introduced, friends and enemies are made.

Part 2: Filling pages with fights to get money (Chapter 101-approx. 775)

Very fitting description IMO. There is no reason that the story is going where it goes. There are just random events that help MC become stronger through fights and lucky encounters. Some characters are introduced that may play a part later on in the story but you just feel that the author just wanted to introduce a character and "reactivate" them later on in the story line with the pathetic try to look like a wise author with foresight.

Part 3: The end (approx. Chapter 776-915)

This part should start in 50-100 chapters and will be used to finish up loose end (I hope the author doesn't forget any) and close up the story line.

Overall it does feel a little cliché but if the ending is good, which I have a feeling could be the case, than it deserves the rating: Average <<less

i totally recommend this, mostly due not having the 'underestimated protagonist tag'. Its very tiring to read the word 'disdain' 'cold' and 'arrogant' for every character the MC meets, especially the audience where the only words that comes out of their mouth are 'he's looking for death' 'cant see mt. Tai' 'a s*upid person' and then after the fight is gasping.

this novel for people that like reading Xianxia with army building where the MC has lots of loyal friends, few one dimensional enemies. Interesting and funny characters. The MC is... more>> especially funny and he is having fun with his life unlike others who is filled with revenge getting stronger and mu*der. <<less

Perhaps the best novel in this site. Not only is the cultivation and world interesting, the MC and the trope of characters feel like real people. There are also enough scene from the point of view to give us a wider scope of the situation (and not only what the MC sees) however these scenes are not too much as to distract us from whats happening to the MC.

Give it a try and you will be satisfied and if by some reason you initially do not like it try reading... more>> 10 more chapters, that will change your opinion. <<less

[might contain minor spoilers from the raws]

Honestly when people recommended me this, I was really excited. They said MC was shrewd and funny and smart and all that jazz. But honestly, he's not as shrewd as people make it out to be, I was expecting a little more based on people's descriptions of him. Honestly, this wasn't bad, it's probably one of the better written novels, but it's not as good as people make it sound to be.

I feel like the author did a really good job in setting up a world set the beginning. I was even rather impressed, it seemed like a well done self contained world. But the further it goes the more this world becomes vague, and I feel like the already established rules starts to crumble a little because the structure is not as solid as it could have been. Perhaps because as it goes further, author stretches himself thin. This goes not just for the world build up, but also the character evolution and the plot. Our MC is given a clear goal at the beginning, which is what really pushes the plot forward. However we are never really given a statist actor answer, as the "big reveal" to the answer we were looking for kinda just drops in importance and then skimmed through. Doesn't mean the author forgot about it, it just means it was more a means to an end than the result and we don't actually learn much in the end other than "oh he accomplished his goal". And the accomplishment of the goal doesn't really affect the plot in anyway, doesn't change the MC's personality, doesn't really answer questions. It might have as well as not existed. This is really a bummer; the mystery was set up in an intriguing way that it could have been super interesting. Which means all the mysteries from the beginning of the series you really wanted to know and see a result never really happens.
Spoiler

Which means all the mysteries from the beginning of the series you really wanted to know never really gets answered except in passing at best. Not just MC but important side characters as well, and it doesn't really affect the plot.

[collapse]

The characters kinda lose their shine at the end as well because everything is just skimmed through so much. I feel like the author just got tired about it in the end and just rushed everything. The ending was rushed to the point it felt like summaries and then we are given a cut out scene.
Spoiler

For example, rather than explaining the logistics of the battle, the author just goes like "X is battling Y", -insert a random half a chapter scene where Y shows briefly his feelings in the midst of the battle-, "X won over Y". Even the end battles are like this. Which is a great contrast from how the author used to describe in detail the earlier battles. That's why I said the author stretched it too thin, everything was clearer at the beginning/middle, but in the end too many fights were happening, which means we get only a brief glimpse of them (if we are lucky) and the fights are done.

[collapse]

Honestly its not bad, I think the other reviews have given fair points on the positive points of this novel, but I am writing this to point out the weaker points as well.

World of Cultivation is a great novel with good actual character development and a good plotline. A defining factor of World of Cultivation which makes it stand out from other xianxias is that the novel is not focused solely on Zuo Mo, but also features well fleshed out characters that grow along with Zuo Mo. Many people dislike the slow pace in the begining, but the slow pace is one of the things that makes the novel so great since it was able to lay a foundation in the backstory... more>> and world building that would happen throughout the novel. The title of World of Cultivation is great, since, the novel isn't just about Zuo Mo, but about the world and inter species politics and conflicts. Zuo Mo also shows a gradual change from a small and weak nobody to a powerful warlord who cares deeply about his subordinates. The novel should definitely be read to past chapter 100 because it truly picks up after chapter 100. <<less

Slow moving story at times, but very funny and incredibly interesting. Personally I love details regarding the supernatural, magic, cultivation, etc. There is a lot of balance in the story between comedy, plot, and action as it moves forward, but this is from a patient reader. The MC is enjoyable, how he moves the plot forward and his character is clearly defined, sometimes to the point it's annoying, but his perspective is refreshing. Instead of having the will to defy the heavens he wants to survive and make a profit,... more>> his priority is keeping his "little life" and in a world of cultivation I understand why. Again, enjoy the slow plot development and it's usually more enjoyable to let some chapters pile up to binge read, that helps the slow plot development.

On a different note, great translation at Dreams of Jianghu. Just an easy read. <<less

This story is one of the gems of CN LNs. It is truly genuinely funny and charming. The MC struggles with farming magics and finances are just wonderful. As is his greed and scalping of people.

Hundreds of chapters into the story it starts getting weaker as it moves to being mostly about fighting. Which author is not that good at (author even states himself he is bad at that). But there is still the occasional funny moment.

Still, since the first ~300-400 chapters deserve more than 5/5 I am still giving... more>> it an overall score of 5. Read it, you will enjoy the first few hundred chapters immensely. <<less

As for WoC, I think it's my favorite. I'm relatively new to Chinese LNs, and I honestly have enjoyed all that I've read, but this is my #1. The humor, the world, the characters... all really well done. The translator puts out a chapter every day, so once you catch up you only have to wait a day in between chapters. (Usually the wait feels too long because of how... more>> enjoyable the story is, but at least it is only one day.)

I can't say enough good about this story. Just go read it :) <<less

Awesome story. MC is crazy about money, but remains quite moral. Awesome fight scenes. Loved the transition from farmer to fighter. Wish there was romance, but I won't dock points for such as silly reason. Solid plot, although the current arc is a bit too long for my taste. Doesn't really harp on about insignificant stuff which happens in some other stories. (ATG, TMW). Top three on the sight. Highly recommended.
