Well, this is my first review, so bear with me.

The story's just starting out, so it's hard to write anything definitive, but I feel as if it has potential so I'm doing this. Also, there aren't any reviews yet, so I might as well put down my first impressions. The reason why I'm giving it a 3 is pretty obvious, I think.

Thus far, the writing is pretty good. No unnecessary descriptions and I don't get the feeling that the author is trying too hard like in a lot of novels... more>> with an overpowered protagonist. The story goes that the MC is a poor, street urchin that ends up getting picked up by a strong woman. World building is decent so far. I'm honestly just glad that it isn't another reincarnation story, so that's probably what drew me in the most... Though, within the first chapter, we've already encountered a well-overused trope. But, I'll blame it on the lack of a creative way to showcase the MC's strength early on.

As for the characters, there's only the MC and his master. But from the looks of it, she isn't going to be a relevant character. She just exists as a reason for the MC's strength from what I can tell. But that's whatever. At least his power is explained; he was trained hard and worked for it. The MC, Shou, he's pretty blasé and probably naive. But it's just the beginning, so I can't say that I like or dislike him. So far it feels like the story is happening around him rather than him acting in the story. If anyone read the Great Gatsby, they'd probably understood what I meant. Even though it's from his perspective... I don't feel as if he's much of a character. This can either get better or worse.

That's about all I have to say for now. I think that this story has an awesome possibility to have well-constructed dark undertones (the prologue gave that feeling) or be a flat out dark story. Everything seems to be cast in a dreary, dull, gray overcast. That's the feeling that I get from the writing. It's interesting. Looking forward to reading more. <<less

The only other review of this novel by 'Tripping' was very unreasonable in my opinion, so I am writing my own review.

The world building seems fairly decent, though we are only at Chapter 10 as of the time of this review. This is another reason I disliked the other review. He's given it 3 stars based on only a single chapter. There are so many crappy novels that have a rating of more than 3, so giving this novel a 3 is pretty unfair. It seems like a pretty decent... more>> novel so far.

The characters are fine so far, nothing particularly dislikable about any of them.

The power system is interesting. Some people can use a magical power, and these people are nobles. Commoners can't use this power. Some extremely strong people are able to inherit extremely powerful crystals from their family and live for hundreds of years. Honestly, the power system feels pretty broad, but since we are only at Chapter 10, I haven't been able to find out about it in depth.

Looking forward to more chapters. Read through the chapters and see how you like it. <<less

binge read 32 chapters in one day

Where to begin, this is undoubtedly the best novel i've recently come across. The way author author spins the story is totally engaging. Worldbuilding, characterization is such detailed that you could vividly imagine yourself there. Also, this attribute is largely accentuated by Translators superior ability. The author writes fluidly, and translator has a fairly commendable grip on vocabulary. Adding them together, you get a awesome WN

On the other hand, it seems each arcs length is about 12 chapter. It may seem short, but... more>> dude each chapter is fairly long, at least on NU standards. Author is sure picky, writing the story to his utmost concern. He published 99 chapters in 10 years. It may seems slow at a glance, but we get top quality chapter.

This novel is the epitome of mild dark fantasy. We can see how the protagonist develops along with the side characters. Also, another fresh breather is that, despite being jp fantasy novel, MC IS NOT A PUSHOVER. NO TRANSMIGRATION/REINCARNATION, DEUS EX MACHINA sh*t IS DIVULGED HERE

The focal point of the novel (with backstory)

Spoiler

Basically, shuou (mc) was discarded by his parents at birth due to his deformed facial feauture (Tbh his backstory is ambiguous). He lived his early life as a stray cat. He, a commoner, had superior kinetic ability akin to a hornet. He got spotted by an assasin and she adopts him to impart her technique to continue the lineage. He got trained into a bonafide martial artist in 12 years in desolation. But his desire to see the outside world seperates him from his master. Basically, the focal point is for him to find the meaning in human ties, various forms of relationship. As i've stated before, he grew up in isolation. He's about 18 years old, the age where people long for ties, burn with curiosity.A completely normal teenager going through a ride called life, resulting in growing up. That's it

the charming point to me is the worldbuilding. We get suspense, melancholy, comedy, romance. Author wrote the worlds nature, who can use magic, how it affected the society overtime. The illustrations he paints about the society is similar to arachoid, intricate yet intriguing

Romance. There are multiple girls. Going by the standard term, it can be classified as a harem. But not shallow, MC spends time with each girl and deepens their relationship. Which clouds the border of friendship and romanticisation. Unfortunately, C32 is still to early too comment on this topic.I'll update this by reading further into it

[collapse]

Defintely recommend fellow readers who's looking for a good fantasy to read

edit: On hiatus. WN is running. Read at your own risk <<less

I'm conflicted when it comes to this novel. It feels like it has two extremes to it. One contains a unique and very intriguing world and hierarchy. The monsters are vaguely explained but still do well in the setting. The MC is a weird mix of apathetic/naive and competent but manages to be likeable so far.

The other extreme which pulled this novel from 5 stars to 3 in my opinion is the pseudo-harem novel feel. While the tags and actual story so far has no indication of a harem or... more>> solid romance, the interactions between MC and the characters in this world give a similar feeling that you would get from a harem novel.

Spoiler

The part where a high level female military officer, and adjutant to one of the top four families in the kingdom, picks up a commoner's used underwear and proceeds to vigorously inhale the scent is far from necessary. Include the fact that two noble daughters as well as a military woman from the fort he served at shortly are obsessed with him and it becomes hard to believe that 'harem' isn't a tag on this novel.

[collapse]

My conclusion is that Lapis no Shinzou is a good novel that is being dragged down by obscure harem elements. There's a chance that this novel can devolve into the dense MC harem trope because the outline is all there, but I will give the benefit of doubt and continue reading as it updates.

Pretty decent story so far. There's no FMC. (Yes apparently this is a harem story, NU please include that tag so people won't be misleaded. Thanks) There are some remarkable female characters so far and all of them are not your perfect heroine type:

- One of the noble girls is pretty conceited and only opens up to the MC when he carried her ass. The other one is a coward and asked him to bring her back, abandoning the test and her teammates, even her noble friend.

- The duchess's retainer.... more>> Graceful and responsible but is a closet pe*vert. Unlucky MC is her target.

- The duchess. She is caring towards the MC but is very manipulative and wants to use him for her future plans.

- The princess is a heavy drug addict and acts like a total spoiled douchebag.

- The princess's retainer is one of the best girls, but she enables the princess, which is also a wrong thing to do but guess she can't go against orders.

- The female friend from the fortress. She treats him like a little brother but then looks at him like a monster when he comes back to save her.

I look forward to future chapters to see how it turns out. <<less

The story started exciting and interesting however it quickly becomes boring. Nothing that happens evokes excitement and that really is a major turnoff. Descriptions are often VERY descriptive thus they can be a chore to read and the characters, although were explored an acceptable amount, I found nothing noteworthy and memorable about them besides their appearance and some of their behavioral tendencies. The main character feels lifeless and gives off an emotionless vibe that is contradicted by his thoughts displaying emotion, more often than not I find myself unable to... more>> determine what kind of expression he is making during the various interactions in the story.

In short, this story can be interesting however the reader will have to be prepared to sit through slow, excruciatingly painful, and boring sections to be able to experience it. The characters aren't very memorable and the main character is bland. <<less

I am so disgusted by this novel. It frustrates me sooooooo much. I wouldn't even care if it didn't have such a great start. THEN you find yourself asking "Really author. After all that that's the direction you want to go with this novel."

Our MC is not an idiot or a dic for brains yet he is a hero of justice passive man who gets pushed around a lot. He supposedly is young and wants freedom yet he doesn't have the matching hormones for girls (negligible). He wants friends so... more>> bad it's annoying how is this an assassin's protege at all. Overall it was a frustrating read where you question his decisions all the time since they make absolutely no sense and usually involves other persons forcing things on him. I didn't come here to read about this pushover. <<less

Till now I've read a lot of fantasy novel. But majorettes of them had a MC who was way too dense to understand that he's op. But this MC understands how he's powerful then others. And it's not only about the MC the story is good and its not rushed (although there was a time skip of 12 years in which he was training but I don't hate it). Also like some other op MC he's not s*upid. Well, in my opinion I'd say instead of reading the reviews give... more>> the novel a try. Because soon enough some genius author will start giving their one-sided opinion. Everyone has different tastes some might like or hate it. <<less

so as usual, my review can be called as just ranting stuff, but if you're a new reader and can accept the rants I said please go ahead and read this

but if you can't accept it, might as well forget it and read another novel

well ch 1 was no good for me, was a disappointment

sigh what was that, the series of events looked really forced

Spoiler

the lack of heavy reason for his departure (leaving his master and making her cry).... but I guess him leaving seclusion on his own will without any heavy reason is better than being forced to, whether it's due to some antagonists or some mishaps)

his reintegration to civilization (going there without any money) and the acceptance of a shady job (which will throw the MC to people in power/status that will look down on him) is done without any sort of planning

the fight to showcase his power/abilities (nobles (so them being rich is the a given) being fine with stealing some possessions of some commoners)

[collapse]

the author really could've done better sigh, all of that just to make the plot progress

ch 2

pretty much ok I guess

Spoiler

well it's another one of those trope

some higher ups saw the MCs ability cause of some debacle thus having an interest in him, whether it's due to his ability or his personality

well chances are it's gonna be one of those annoyingly unnecessary meddler that will force the MC into some events

heh wouldn't be surprised if he's gonna be stuck with the army, with his freedom to explore gone with the wind

[collapse]

ch 3

the test is really shady if you ask me

Spoiler

with that pairing and stuff

[collapse]

can think of some ways the test will progress

also wouldn't be surprised if the test might take many chapters to finish

ch 4

the MC in this chap looks like a dumbass

Spoiler

can already what might happen with their teamup

he's already regretting things, what a dumbass accepting jobs without thinking it through

well if he doesn't like crowds or some interactions with others, he shouldn't have left his master then, dumbass.... he really has the tendency to avoid paths that has heavy traffic (where would you explore new things then, if you don't like places like that? the slums?... really an idiot)

getting into a fight without resolving things just begs for trouble (could've beaten them up after the break up without anyone knowing then asking them to clam their mouths), the whole scene from getting angry towards the end was unnecessarily dramatized (heh he could've dodge being wet by that drink but he didn't, it's just an attempt to add some weight)

[collapse]

ch 5

well it's pretty entertaining for me so far although I might rant about things

looks like his master only trained his body
Spoiler

his master is an assassin

she could've taught him on how to be calm and control his emotions, on always having a concrete plan and be ready at all times

here we have him getting into a fight that can be avoided and not being in his top condition when the test started cause he didn't slept well

[collapse]

looks like he's just a strong dude

ch 6

Spoiler

making the test look bleak can be a good time to showcase the mc's ability

well the only problem with that, is that in some situations it can be downside.. cause by making it look so bleak, you're gonna wonder how the hell others passed that test

[collapse]

well tbh I'm not really sure if their situation is under that downside
Spoiler

he can hunt for food if I'm not wrong, so their food problem should be solvable

[collapse]

it's still a nice read for me

ch 7

I really like this chap

Spoiler

they talked about the test, ladened with contradictions

[collapse]

goddamn 12, 13, 14 really irritates me <<less
