Endo and Kobayashi’s Live Commentary on the Villainess

Description

『She’s always putting on that grumpy face even though she’s not actually that upset! Oh, why can’t she just be honest with herself…!?』

『She is a tsundere, after all? When her embarrassment levels exceed a certain limit, she will explode into anger. However, the point that she’s suppressing under the surface is that she wouldn’t mind that sort of thing if it were in a less public place.』

As Endo-kun passionately reacts to the antics of Lady Liselotte, the villainess of an otome game, Kobayashi-san provides a painstaking breakdown of her tsundere behaviour.

Suddenly, one person could hear their voices; Liselotte’s fiancée, Prince Siegward.

That is where this story begins.

Reading this novel will cause you to get severe diabetes.

I think this novel is perfect for a sweet and wholesome novel that you can read without worrying about future problems are drama. The only problem it has is how quickly the thunder villainess got thrown away as a side character and lost her tsun part with her pov chapters.

To describe this novel in short, it is a novel about two shippers actually having control over who they ship with who.

I think the author made a very good decision ending the... more>> novel shortly instead of stretching it too long and making it boring. It is perfect for making you get a quick dose of diabetes. <<less

This at it's core is a very lukewarm romance story.

When I started reading this I really was enjoying what I was seeing, there were a few romances and what could be interesting bits here and there and of course the cute tsundere female lead getting called out and reacting cutely. But that's kind of as far as the story gets. Very few of the characters have any sort of depth to them at all and there are even some that are supposed to be main characters but in reality get... more>> a handful of lines and are promptly forgotten. The plot really doesn't go anywhere either, there's sort of this vague impression like they're getting things done but the ending is so milk toast bland it just makes me wonder what the point of any of the things they did was. A huge part of this is just that the story is afraid to have an actual bad guy, everyone's just caught in some unfortunate big misunderstanding so nobody's at fault and love saves the day. It pulls it's punches so hard sometimes I don't even realize it's taking a swing.

I think it's really a strange read for the characters because it often falls onto the "tell dont show" issue where all of the character development is explained briefly as a cliffnote about the game's other romance plots. Some of the characters have weird like hive mind emotions flowing over from the other plots too?
Spoiler

Finne remembers her Himbo dying a bunch even though that never happened in reality? They never explain that

[collapse]
Everyone just falls in love with everyone else at first sight too and everyone ultimately ends up feeling very flat. Under the guise of breaking the characters out of the game's tragic ending and letting them choose their soul mate everyone neatly pairs up the way the author intended them to. The main pairing was the best one (Kobayashi and Endou) because we see the most of the two of them, but even then it's just okay, none of them really wowed me. Also, the tsundere girl getting embarrassed and running away bit is pretty cute, but once you realize that that is all there is to the princess it starts to get old very quickly.

They had these two characters which I mentioned earlier have chapters dedicated to discussing their history and importance to fighting the big baddy (I don't remember their names fittingly, it's the teacher and the little boy) who then get like 3 sentences of dialogue and don't even matter to the plot in the end anyways.

The ending? It blows but here's the specifics:
Spoiler

So they spend the entire novel preparing to fight the ancient witch that would try to possess the princess but she just poofs in as Gandalf the white now because love cured her evil. There's also the whole bit about getting the male god back to his own world but it's really just bread to hold the main character's confessions, he doesnt matter that much. Actually I didn't even mention the whole thing about how Finne is the soul of Eve, the first woman and the male half of the god of their world wanted to f*ck her so he mu*dered Adam and now tried to trap her soul by making a dating sim rpg on earth and trying to force people to choose his chad self insert character so that his love magic would be strong enough to shove Eve's soul through dimensions into a f*ckable corpse on earth. I didn't mention that for a reason.

[collapse]
It just makes me wonder what the point of anything they did was, the two irl teens are constantly stressing how the game world is real now and if they mess up? People will die for real. And then we never see any actual danger at any point, no characters ever really have to do any meaningful combat and the ending is how it is.

All in all I'm a little disappointed, there's a ton of fluff here but if you try and look any deeper you're going to fall through the bottom. <<less

Good, adorable but short story.

It could use the hand of an editor to polish the plot a bit more, maybe give it some depth and I would love to see the remaining chapters, but overall it was a super fun read.

I hope it becomes popular enough for others authors to try their hand on such type of story telling because this one left me wanting more and more.

I like this because it has most of the things I'm looking for in a story, and a pretty solid writing and translation. It was never headache-inducing to read, the plot flows smoothly etc. I wouldn't say that the plot is innovative, or brilliant or deep, but that's not what the writer is aiming for in the first place. It's a nice relaxing read and that's it.

To determine whether this fits you, let me provide a checklist of what it is and isn't:

Pros:

    • No messy/prolonged love-triangles/n-gons that provide emotional drama. Those stuff just tire me out, so this comes on the pro side for me.
    • Nice pacing and writing style. It doesn't drag, even if it is generally slice-of-life.
    • The Prince character is as stable and well-educated as you'd expect a noble would be in that position. I didn't have any urges to strangle him, unlike some other princes I've read.
    • All the characters have some depth; they're not just a cardboard cutout of anime/LN tropes.
    • Fluff. Nice, light, feel-good read.
    • Some semblance of common sense in how everyone tries to solve the problem of the Big Bad. It really makes more sense for them to tell the king/noble parents of some of the characters instead of fighting it on their own when they're just a bunch of teenagers. What's acceptable game-logic is weird in real life.
Cons:

    • Fluff. If you want heftier plot, this is not it. There is the usual Big Evil lurking in the background as can be expcted from a world that's supposed to be in a game, and the plot revolves around that, but I don't perceive it as dominant.
    • Ensemble cast. I personally don't mind the ensemble cast as I find most of them interesting. Yet if you want the writer to focus more on the Prince and the supposed Villainess, (and inwardly grinning as she acts tsundere while he can read her thoughts easily with Endou and Kobayashi's help), that is not this story.
    • See the above point; ensemble cast. Thus, there are actually several couples in this story that it focuses on.
    • Actually feels too short. Probably because of the above point. The focus is spread over more people, but because of that, it feels like there are dozens more chapters that can be written for all of them.

The premise is fluffy and unique but the execution is so-so. Typical Japanese Web Novel. Very slow pace.

The story is too focus on fluf and romance, so don't expect much deep stuff going on. Perfect if you just want something to smile when having a bad day.

A fun, short and to the point WN that is honestly quite and does not overstays its welcome IMO.

I didn't have any issues with the change in POV but I imagine some will.

Absolute adorable and pure sweet. Liselotte is so far the "Most Kind-hearted Villainess" I have ever seen. She deeply care about her loved one once you able to get close to her.

Her villainous side is showing up few times to show that she's still a Villainess, but a caring one. Her personality is strong but she's easy to tease when it come to love. Totally best girl!

Very sweet... very nice, very Japanese...

How come? most things happen because of common Japanese tropes.

Although I really enjoyed the twist, it's like, when you read the fan-fic of someone that loved the game but didn't like the story, they go in and shift things around to make it to their taste.

I felt that the humor was actually hilarious because when the clichés were broken, it showed, and it made an impact on the story (IE:... more>>

Making the Heroine an OP LVL99 character being a battle maniac that seeks thrills and thinks with her stomach, a muscle head, who fights by... regenerating her own body instantly with her "white magic" instead of your regular airhead oblivious Otome character... you can cut off her arm and she'll just attach it back and keep on fighting

)

That is to say, to really enjoy the humor of the novel you have to be acquainted with the common clichés and tropes of the genre... if you look at my reading list you'll find what I mean.

But it's not so smooth, somethings felt forced and became a let down afterwards when we didn't get a satisfying pay off from the set up, although, I found it bothersome in some scenes, I quite liked the pacing because there is always something interesting happening.

If anything the split of the arches I didn't enjoy fully, on the "B side" you focus on the POV of Endo-Kun and at first it felt bothersome, intrusive because most of those chapters are just to dump the expository aspect of the setting, until they begin to develop their own story.

It's not a bad story, but it's not that great either, if you are a fan of "Otome" plots you should definitely read it because it IS an interesting twist and there is a bit of everything you will enjoy here.

My only mayor complaint is that, as pointed out by the comments, they ruined the "Tsundere" aspect of the "Female Lead" by plainly explaining everything that she's thinking to the "Male Lead".

Oh, if you don't enjoy "Tsundere" characters you may actually enjoy this portrayal... <<less

Really fun. Obvi in the game our two irl MCs are OP gods (literally) but their irl interactions have them be relatable humans which is fun. You get two sides of the coin with them.

Spoiler

With our game MCs they are all incredible and also incredibly cute. With (to them) a Literal God and Goddess on their side they can power through.

It's adorable. It really is just so cute. It does rush and jump a bit, but it does not feel out of place because of the game atmosphere.

Liked it for the most part, but I feel that it's a bit overrated with an overall of 4.5. The direction of the story was actually pretty interesting with how the ML and FMC were portrayed more so as spectators to an otome game, but the characters honestly felt a bit flat. Sure they're endearing all all, just not anything special that separates them from other characters with similar personality traits. Really lost its charm a little more than halfway through, and if the story wasn't as short as it... more>> was, I wouldn't be all that tempted to read to the end.

Author delivers on the relationships with the in-game characters, but I was left disappointed with the development between the ML and FMC. We get almost everyone else's POV but the FMC's, so we don't even get a clear insight into how she feels about the MC until the last few chapters of the novel and even then their confessions were quite abrupt and shoved into a single chapter and they simply get together. Not in the least bit romantic and was a letdown.

We get a happy ending, so I'm glad about that at the very least, but this novel truly isn't anything spectacular. Would recommend reading, but don't set your expectations too high with how good of a rating this novel has. <<less

Not bad and the translation is good but it's not really to my taste.

The start had promise but eventually it just kinda got dull. On top of that it find that the relationships between the characters went a bit fast.

Like I said not for me but give it a try and see for yourself (´ω`)
