After The Vicious Cannon Fodder Was Reborn

Growing up in an orphanage since he was a child, Tao Mu, who had suffered so much, never thought that his life was actually a result of picking up the wrong script.

Eighteen years ago, two children were born at the same time, but due to the negligence of the medical staff their name tags were switched. Tao Mu, who was supposed to be born in a wealthy family, was sent to an orphanage instead.

Eighteen years later, the mistake was discovered. Tao Mu originally thought everything could go back on track. However, his parents and siblings who were supposed to be the closest family disliked him deeply, lovers and friends also turned their backs on him.

Receiving such a shock, Tao Mu completely revealed his dark side, becoming a vicious cannon fodder that everyone hated. In the end he found himself utterly isolated and committed su*cide by jumping off a building.

After being reborn, Tao Mu was surprised to find that he actually lived in a book. The male protagonist in the book was the Silly White Sweet** who was the other baby that he had mistakenly switched identities with. As for him, he was just the vicious cannon fodder encountered by the Silly White Sweet in his sweet and pampered life.

Tao Mu: f*ck this plot, and f*ck this stereotypical routine. I won’t be playing along in this life!

In other words, this is a dog blood story of a highly provoked cannon fodder no longer mistreating himself to please anyone after being reborn. Instead he will be relying on himself to build an entertainment empire that will catapult him to the top.

** person who is s*upid but in a sweet way

The summary of this story sounds good, and the storyline has a good potential for a 5 star rating.

However, the flow of the story is a bit rough, the pacing is too hurried, there's quite a lot of discrepancies and just too much information crammed in a paragraph.

I feel like the characters are a bit.. Annoying? I would have thought that with MC's experiences in his last life he would have become someone hard to read, however the author write it so that every other side characters are able to... more>> judge his intentions easily.. When the MC has intelligently pull himself out of a discord, people would think of him to be scheming and crafty. This is one of the reason I find this story to be a bit.. Distasteful. Haha, I just wish that MC would have keep this side of him from out the open.

I also find MC childhood friends to be very idiotic. Im sorry but im not sure of the purpose of them in the novel other than to add a bit of trouble for the MC? They are childhood friends who would stick with MC but tbh I do see how they would be beneficial to the emotional and mental health of the rebirthed MC.

There's a lot of thing I want to say, there's a lot more characters I want to criticize. In the end, all I can say is that it is not my cup of tea. <<less

This is a good story. I'm at chapter 48 and I feel that the MC is relatable, in some ways.

His relations with other people are the biggest pro to this story and I love how well the author has depicted MCs relation with the various people.

The downside to this story is also related to MC but mainly I feel is the pacing of the story.

48 chapters in and we have barely moved 3 months into the story. Honestly I feel this is the biggest downside for this story as it... more>> feels like the author is trying to cram so much things happening to MC in such a short span of time.

Spoiler

Another downside is the capabilities of MC. MC is both an actor, stockbroker and now apparently a developer of websites.

The part where MC is both a good actor and knows about the business side is mainly explained by him having lived 10 years of both acting and working and studying business. My main problem is the fact that he also just decides to pick up learning how to code and now developed an entire website in just what appears to be a week or two.

Maybe I would have an easier time to accept this if not for the fact that MC admits he never even worked with websites before.

[collapse]

Pacing is the storys biggest fault. The translation is however excellent and should only be applauded <<less

Dont look at the title

This isn't just a reborn Gary stu with a bunch of 2-D villains and side

Its definitely Gary Stu but its gary stu with a plot

... more>> The characters are well fleshed out

The villains have a reason why their villain

And even in the end when everything comes to light, youd have never expected it

The white lotus isnt actually a white lotus and the vicous rival isnt actually a black lotus either

Either way this novel is really good for a quick read

There are definitely some emotional parts and you'll definitely enjoy watching TM come out of the shadow of his last life

The Gong is pretty good too

Like a big husky, sticky and protective

I reccomend this <<less

Second chance. Rebirth. Going back in time.

Kinda revenge. Theres so much drama. MC is indifferent and doesn't want revenge but he can't really choose because cannon fodders just jumps onto him.

It's really good and pretty exciting at first but it turned boring later on.

... more>> The antag wasnt really annoying for me. He's a green tea b*tch. Also he lacks logic and is really s*upid. But he isn't really capable of doing anything big so I don't really care about him.

The mtl is super easy to understand.

Patriotic. The novel is kinda patriotic. Most movies MC acts on are about soldiers and war. But it ain't anything bad so I don't really care

There's an actual reason why the MC goes back in time and I like that.

I actually like a chracter in this novel. He's kinda like a small villain character. Shen Chen. I really like him for some reason. <<less

Who doesn't like a nice second chance novel?

It's mostly OK as of chapter 97... however....I do have one complaint...

Spoiler

The author gives him so many 'skills' that it's ludicrous. In theory he had only 10 years to get all these talents/skills etc... and even if he somehow never needed to sleep I don't think it's believable for him to have that many 'trained' skills. If the author would have had him come back from 20 or 25 years in the future then it would have been slightly easier to accept it.

This is my all time favorite rebirth show biz novel because everything in this novel makes sense, there's a cause and effect behind the characters, their actions, and the whole situation. This novel is not without flaws but just because of how much there's a mystery that's revealed and how there's no useless brain dead cannon fodder (or of so, they're bbeing manipulated by the plot halo and most realize this and escape it). Rather than falling into the vague cliches, this novel is far more gripping, to the point... more>> where I finished it by MTL. <<less

The author dragged the story way too much. It should have ended around 200 ch, that way it wouldn't have made all the points others are complaining about so visible.

-There is a repetition of MC and villain actions and effects again and again. (There was the belief that the villain did everything on purpose, but honestly, until the latter part of the story where he has turned black and the hows and whys are explained, the author was like "did he or didn't he do this on purpose?").

-For international... more>> readers, like me, the over-the-top nationalism after a while became tiring. I mean I was really ok even around 210 ch, but especially in the last 50 or so chapters I got fed up.

-the many, many, many talents a person learned in the small period he was in the acting industry and after he left it.

-the short period of filming/establishing a company/ making movies / resolving issues.

So yeah, this should have fewer chapters with less filler information that deviates from the plot and maybe it could have been good. Still not sure. <<less

It's a very long read but if you're idle it's a good way to spend it. Translation was good and the story was good as well. First time reading celebrity novel and the plot was good enough and well written enough to grab my attention.

While the concept, storyline, and characters are great, the author sometimes "over tells" a few parts that has no importance/correlation with the plot. Example, the plot of the movie, background of the movie and characters, and etc. It drags for many words, only for the part to be of no importance djdjjfj

And how is this canon fodder so amazing? He codes, he acts, he photographs, he invests, this doesn't show how he's a canon fodder, other than the fact that he was vicious in his past life😭 it's satisfying to... more>> see him steal ideas of his past life tho, and he works hard for it so I guess the golden finger just cancels out lel <<less

It was fun and interesting, love MC and ML and MC’s family! Both are very OP, with golden fingers to whazoo but it was still great to see MC continually succeed after all the tragedy in his life. It was also great that he really tried to let go of past hatred and just try to live his life and obtain happiness. Too bad he keeps getting dragged back by villain (in more ways than one we ultimately find out), who I have to say is truly a brain dead... more>> white lotus to the extreme! And so are all the ppl who support him. Author did a good job making them all so shameless, it was crazy aggravating, but at least everyone else recognized that villain was completely illogical and loves to play the victim. Wow he was f&#&&g annoying! Can’t stand the weak and pitiful victim act who can’t stop crying and moaning about how hard their life is!

The netizens as usual are super callous, hypocritical, and judgy and it’s quite exhausting reading all the vitriol and absurd righteousness they always spew out in this novel and all other entertainment type novels. Of course, they’re always wrong, face slapping ensues, they feel s*upid, only to jump up and down like clowns the next time. Truly portrayed as losers and busybodies with nothing better to do than insult strangers on the net. It’s quite sad how ppl feel so entitled to judge and insult others behind the screen of anonymity. But I detract.

Story would have been better without the suuuuper lengthy descriptions and explanations, though they were oftentimes very helpful in really digging through the situation and exposing and analyzing the characters’ actions and feelings. I’d say story was a 4 until the last 100 chapters, which really should have been cut down cuz then it just went on and on and on for really no good reason other than author just wanting to drag it out. Then all the loooong ass chapters and descriptions were no longer helpful but just tedious. I basically skimmed through to the end just to complete it. Really, once they got revenge on the villain, they should have just wrapped it up and sent the couple to their HE rather than go through more and more filming and hyping of the Motherland (which we get it, Chinese are Uber patriotic, and China is just too strong, amazing, and made up of red blooded citizens whose blood continually boil over for their country).

I know some novels have an abrupt ending that either leaves loose ends or just wraps everything up too quickly. This one was definitely the opposite and probably what dragged down the rating on an otherwise fun, light read. Nothing too original but certainly worth reading to pass the time. Just skip or skim last 50-100 chapters at least. Nothing really happens. Other than Shen family continuing to be brain dead disasters who can’t learn from their mistakes (esp the sister - she takes the cake. Too bad she didn’t get killed off. In fact, most of the villains live, which was rather disappointing and dragged the story, since they just kept popping back up to create trouble. Sorry, I guess I enjoy more ruthless revenge novels!) and detailed descriptions blow by blow of whatever they’re filming. Like literally the script of the films. And leads getting measured for clothes (like 5 pgs of that), and mentions that leads are worth billions of dollars. That’s mentioned at a dozen times each chapter. We get it. He’s/they’re rich. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel. It had some unique twists to the common rebirth/revenge tropes, I loved the emotional development of the MC, and the villain was put together in an interesting way.

Main reasons I'm not giving it a full 5 stars is that it petered out at the end... the story should have just been ended with maybe an extra or two for the after-fluff, but instead it went on and on and I ended up skimming through multiple chapters, feeling like the actual story was already over and... more>> why was it still going on for so long.

My other complaint is, while I think the villain was put together well, it shaded towards the idea that part of the reason he was bad was because he wasn't the family's son by blood and thereby "fake". There were so many reasons to dislike him; there was no need to make it sound like being switched at birth/basically adopted was a point to hold against him. <<less

Ok. Let's start or by saying IF you don't like authors who portray solider and policemen as super patriotic heroes, don't like the nationalist and patriotic propagandas, don't like it when authors bring up the China-Japan war or don't like it when author compare China with Hong Kong and Taiwan SKIP THIS NOVEL. For reals, there are seriously heavy themes of these and it's present in almost all of the MC's acting career.

Now on to the review. I'd give this novel a full 5 stars if it wasn't for the... more>> above because this was a really well written novel. What I really enjoyed about the novel is the unique overarching plot. It is one of the most unique plot used in the entertainment circle genre (though it may have been present in other genre but not this).

The key uniqueness being (MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS) :

Spoiler

- The MC actually being stuck in a reincarnation cycle loop

- The backstory and style of the loop as well as the fact that the loop was revealed to all parties involved (though the face slapping after it was revealed a wee bit on the dull side)

- The antagonist Shen Yu's white lotus aura that can actually be perceived by people around him till a point people even think it's black magic!

[collapse]

Another thing I enjoyed about the novel is the thought process of the MC and the other characters. We actually see a situation from many perspectives and there are so many grey areas in a lot of the situations (and the outcome which you may or may not agree with) which was a very interesting addition to the novel.

There is also the MC's character development from being the scheming insecure people pleaser to someone who does what he wants and knows that he's loved (well, there being any character development is already a plus point). And I love the fact that him being scheming is actually addressed. There's also the addressing of his rebirth and his knowledge of the future being time limited so he doesn't actually see himself as a genius or portrays himself as so, knowing that his success is actually attributed to his rebirth and is time limited.

The side characters are nicely developed with people who love him and hate him and love and hate him! The start of the story was so infuriating that I was BOILING inside but it does get better about 4 or 5 chapters in. I actually like the fact that the author didn't focus too much on the Shen Yu (the cuckoo occupying the magpie nest and this term is used A LOT) and he is randomly inserted into parts of the story along with his brain dead white lotus nonsense (trust me there's a reason behind it) in occasionally and made the story not about counterattacking and more about finding love for himself and appreciate the people around him.

The romance was good too! The ML does a gentle attack on the always-on-guard MC and the romancing process is nicely developed!

I'd agree with other commenters saying that the story is very Gary Sue. He knows how to do a lot of stuff (ie programming, photography, make up, producing etc) which is lightly explained and is logical but yet not logical if you put more thought into it. And actually if you think about the butterfly effect, the fact that he changed a major financial player's investment plan would have actually led to a lot of his future knowledge being redundant. The butterfly effect would have resulted in many changes especially in such an ever changing world like the financial world.

Now, the entertainment circle part of the story as well as the business management part is superbly written! I enjoyed it. The author didn't put too much details in the filming of each role and basically touch and go when explaining which made it a good read. In between, the MC also carried out some other stuff too. The author does get into some nitty gritty for certain topics to a point where I think that she may have a business management/ finance/ marketing/ IT/ law/ filming (for reals the author even talks about the conflict between the mainlanders filming and Hong Kong filming) background.

On to what I mentioned at the very beginning. I don't know what the author is tryna do but almost the entire story is a nationalist propaganda. The movies and series the MC takes on are all related to that! All the police and solders are written in super heroic light. Though it's well written, it's still a bit HMMMM to read. You literally can't think too much otherwise you'd be a bit ekked out. The author even goes into details of the film censorship department like she/he's an insider who knows their troubles and is tryna whitewash them and make them more lovable. I think it's quite interesting to read but it's like a proud parent boasting about their child so you get the vibe. Nothing wrong with it but... 🤔

I would say, the ending wasn't satisfying. Some endings give you a super completed feeling but this was a meh-ish ending where (I don't think it's much of a spoiler because almost ever other novel has these kinds endings but just in case it is to some)

Spoiler

The MC graduated and got married on a private island. The end. Yucks.

[collapse]

Not my type of ending at all. I like those 20 years later kinda ending or till their deaths and they leave a place in the history book type soooo ya.

After my review, if you wanna give it a chance do go ahead and read it! It's really well written with a face-pace not boring plot (don't let the almost 300 chapters deter you it flies by). If you enjoy entertainment circle, business management, an interesting well developed plot line and don't mind heavy nationalist themes, this is a definite read for you! <<less

What an amazing story. I know some people didn't like the verbosity, but I personally loved how detailed the author's descriptions were. There were a couple times when the author repeated descriptions, but for the most part, I felt they really added to the realism of the story. The translator probably wanted to muffle the author during some of the descriptions, but I really appreciated the hard work on the translator's part.

The next thing that really solidified this novel as one of my favorites was the explanation for the rebirth.... more>> I loved it. Some commenters said it explained why he had no expectations for his birth family, but I think it's more than that. It shows how useless it is to compare yourself to others and envy what other people have. Rather than wasting energy on being jealous of someone else for how their privileged upbringing allowed them to have a blessed life, put that energy towards creating the best life possible (and enjoying it). Railing about the unfairness of the world is a waste of energy - of course it's unfair. Comparison and jealousy is a losing game, and will make even great successes feel like losses. I thought this moral was so profound and applied so well to the world today. There will always be people born with better genetics or background or circumstances, but what does that have to do with me? I just need to focus on living my life to the best of my ability.

The other lesson I thought was very meaningful was appreciating other's help. If someone else provides help, it doesn't matter how condescending it might feel, or how it barely requires any effort on their part, it's help they didn't need to give. Nobody owes it to anyone to be generous people. It's strange to feel that someone hasn't done enough just because they gave a little, but not "enough" (whatever enough means). Have people benefited from even the little charity they gave? If so, then just accept the charity with grace.

This also highlights one major difference between the MC and Shen Yu. While Shen Yu would quickly go to others to ask them to help or be generous, that was the extent of it. He rarely did anything generous himself. This kind of generosity is at most virtue signaling with no substance. Forgive others, give to others, help others, but don't think that telling others what to do is the same as doing it yourself.

Finally, I think some might also see this story as an advocate for abandoning "family of origins" in favor of non-birth family. But I don't think that's the lesson here. It's more about how people should appreciate the love of the people who have spent the most effort in raising and loving them. They might get on each other's nerves - people tend to do that when they are around each other often. They might fuss or nitpick or make a bunch of stifling suggestions - that all stems from the fact they actually care. People who never bother to fight or raise contradicting opinions with someone just don't feel close enough or care enough to do so.

Finally, this book isn't prefect. I'm petty tolerant of (though still don't like) patriotism, especially in Chinese novels. I think some authors put it in to help them minimize the chances of getting censored. However, this book takes it to the extreme, especially towards the end. Some of the first movies and TV series the MC participated in were vaguely interesting, but towards the end, the author just ran out of ideas and waxed poetic about the handsomeness of soldiers. First off, I think movies with only action and little plot are some of the least interesting movies out there. Secondly, why describe the soldier TV series and movie both so vaguely and in such detail? I got quite sick of hearing how amazing the fighting and explosions were. If you're going to skim over the plots, skim over the shooting as well. <<less

I avoided reading this novel because of the bad reviews.

I thought this would just be a cliche novel that I would drop instantly but boy was I wrong!!

I couldn’t put this novel down at all. Even when I was working, I was thinking about what would happen next lol

... more>> It’s not particularly exciting, there are also some cliche points and boy its so long because I think the author tends to over explain stuff —— but this novel has a certain charm to it that makes me love it a lot!!

I love how MC interacts with his family, it’s so heartwarming I teared up 🥲

I didn’t like the ML so much as first because 30 chaps in and he only got like 1 scene and in the next chaps, he is barely there plus I feel like him suddenly liking MC is too sudden —- but!! When it’s came to the romance arc, boy was a giggling and smiling like a fool (there’s also another reason why ML seems to suddenly like MC but I won’t spoil you hihi)

Another reviewer mentioned that Shen Yu (the white lotus enemy) was pitiful because he’s dumb and naive but he isn’t a bad person. And I agreeeee!

There were times in the story when I also pitied him but at the end of the day, Mumu (MC) also doesn’t deliberately hurt Shen Yu after his rebirth. It’s Shen Yu that keeps bothering MC and it’s so irritating that he would be like ‘I want to be friends with MC” then he’ll force his ‘righteousness’ on MC. Like MC shouldn’t revenge on his enemy #2 but then when Shen Yu was fighting enemy #2, he himself retaliated. What a two faced, hypocritical b*tch!

Plus, MC majorly ignores him in this novel, MC has a scheming heart but he doesn’t retaliate against the people he hates in the new rebirth life if this people won’t do him wrong

Anyhoooo, it’s a really really good read! Don’t miss out on this just because of the bad reviews.

I recommend not reading this in one go because if you do, you’ll get fed up with how long the explanations are making you skip some paragraphs. But if you don’t read this in one go and take your time, even if there seems to be a lot of paragraphs/explanations it makes the story better

Thanks to Mumu and our Ceo Li for making me smile these couple of daysssss hihi <<less

Starting off with the cons:
There are two big hurdles in this novel. The first dozen chapters were unbelievably unbearable. The pacing is extremely slow and it was hard to adjust to all the brainless idiots around the MC (story gets better as soon as he gets out of H town though). Then it was the intolerable shameless act of the antagonist which exceeds the average amount you get to see.
And there's my pet peeve of repeating a type of phrasing too much, in this case, it's about foretelling... more>> information that always gets followed up with a sentence about it being in the afterword.

But otherwise, it's nothing but great fun.

The MC's abilities are convincing, though definitely exaggerated, those were skills that he had acquired himself over the years of working hard and still works hard on. The ML, though can be a bit too pushy at times, is nothing but a gentleman who knows how to communicate and work hard to understand and be understood by MC.
Both of them also have their negative sides too, which the author never obscured.

The brainlessness of side characters is mostly attributed to the negative IQ nerfing halo of the antagonist.
The rest whether good or bad, are fleshed out properly to look like people and not like one-dimensional background backups. There were sufficient self-interests from all sides to support either protagonist or antagonists and it was exciting to see it all come/clash together.
Foreshadowing is done moderately to leave the readers enough enjoyment when something surprising happens.

I hope you can also at least persevere past the first arc because the latter half was incredibly enjoyable. <<less

Holy crap!!!!! Woah!!!!!!!

Starts off as typical cannon fodder rebirth (revenge ish) entertainment novel!

But this one goes a little more into the halos and how characters are influenced by the halo (MC being no exception!)

... more>> Overall beginning first 200 chapters is something you can probably guess, MC gets famous and is the real son of this family and he gets a CEO ML yadayadayada

It's at around the later stage where the reincarnation mechanic gets explained!!! This part is where the novel goes from 3.5 stars -> 4.5 stars! (I put 5 because I'm emotional and biased, 4.5 only cause beginning was cliche but yk I enjoyed reading that too!!)

The 1 dimensional characters are explained, the multiple reincarnated ones! The love lasting several lives! Time and reincarnation loops! (I love loops sm

Ending is a bit anticlimactic, with MC just letting go of the past + ML taking revenge on ult villain and restraining him so he can't continue the loop but!!

Everything gets explained and there are no super big plot holes as far as I can tell!

Took me about a week to read with many breaks in between! Def would recommend if you can't find anything else to read <<less

Dropped it early. Not because it was bad, but because it was drawn out for such a long time. Each paragraph states the same thing in a different way and drags on before eventually getting back to the story. Kind of tedious to read. I don't really see it getting anywhere.
