He only existed for the protagonist at the moment for the male lead to shine.

Arim swept through the sentences on paper as if comforting Ver. She hoped he would be happy with his beloved, though she knew it would not come true.

When she opened her eyes from the end of her last memory, she had become Prillance, the villainess in the novel ’The Duke’s Lover’.

This novel is definitely the type of transmigration novel I had been searching and yearning for since I've landed upon this trope. Mind you, I have probably read at least 100 novels with this genre since I've been obsessed with it for more than half a year now.

Even if there are many notable novels where a normal girl has transmigrated/reincarnated into a villainess, 'Side Story' is definitely on another whole level. With just 12 chapters, you could feel the tension and drama that normal transmigration stories haven't let you experience.... more>> First of all, the original characters (aside from the transmigrator) of the novel remain who they are for the most part. It really feels like our villainess protagonist, Arim, just squeezed herself in and sticks out like a sore thumb. And that's one thing that I really like, too, is that the protagonist is not some very-overpowered human being and someone who definitely has lived on Earth. I also like the fact that her original life plays a part in this as well, and not just "she died by a truck" or "she's just a normal office worker" kind of thing.

Anyways, this is definitely a fresh air kind of novel if you're like me who desires and yearns for more "reincarnation/transmigration" trope even if you've gotten tired of the other stuff.

Since the latest release as of this review is still at c12, there may be some changes in the direction, but with the way it's going right now, no matter the ending, I would like to finish reading this novel. I thank the translator with my whole life for picking this up. <<less

It’s a very enjoyable story. A normal girl transmigrates into the body of a villainess in a romance story. She wants to help out her favorite character who suffers from unrequited love despite always being there for the heroine. (Second lead syndrome)

Our MC isn’t unreasonable, doesn’t act like a know-it-all and her goal isn’t to take over the heroine role. Her plans are pretty well thought out and she doesn’t come off as foolish at all. However she still gives off a cute and charming vibe.

Our male lead is... more>> a bit cautious but he’s sweet and considerate too. He’s also a big ol cutie like MC. You can see why MC likes him so much.

The duke who MC’s original host body liked isn’t super likeable. He’s not unlikeable either because it’s understandable why he acts like that but he is still kind of a jerk. We haven’t seen the heroine yet but I hope she doesn’t turn out to be a conniving fake white lily heroine <<less

I don't understand what's wrong with the translators who seem to be okay with working the same darn plot all the time, this story doesn't add anything new to the genre of transmigration female leads. The premisse seems to be no different from Villain's savior except without much drama and a psychopath ML.

Female Lead like many other korean isekai josei stories is a love-brain whose first reaction after waking up in a different world is to comfort the supporting character aka ML despite knowing that the villainess and ML never... more>> had an intersection before. She doesn't panic for being isekaied or question why it happened, kind and cute female lead just wants ML to be comforted and doesn't really mind the fact she literally has been stranded to another world!

She knows she wakes up in an ancient european setting, and still does not seem concerned that her sudden change of character could bring.

In passage we even learn that the villainess house would also fall because of the father's crimes, however this doomed end doesn't make the MC panic. After all what's most important is the ML hapiness... She cares soooo much for the ML but she isn't really in love she only thinks they are similar and because she's a fan of ML she just wants him to be happy.... f*ck I want to throw up.

Why do this female leads in most korean transmigration don't seem to have anything on their heads aside for the MLs? She doesn't have a personality or goals of her own aside for ML. You literally transmigrated to another world without any reason, you had a crush, a family and even if you're afraid about the consequences of the rumors, there should be some attachment to your life as Arim, right?

Why the first thing in your mind when something like that happens to you is comfort a dude you only read in the book? What's the point of having the MC learning the plot in the book she doesn't even seem concerned about her own safety? And let's be real she only wants to save him because he's hot. If he was ugly she wouldn't give two sh*ts about some random guy no matter how tragic he is. <<less

I don't like how she's sacrificing herself. She doesn't even think about her own well being. She's just blindly running around to help this man who will obviously doubt her motives. She doesn't even have concrete excuses for her actions. And so far, the way the plan is set up, it looks like she's gonna turn into a vixen who approaches one man and woos another just to spite the heroine. Once the connections between the four are clear, she'll be in a very dangerous position.

I do hope this eventually becomes a more poignant story. 4 stars

TL;DR the characters are unlikable

So I stopped reading after c34 because I cant get any sort of attachment to any major characters in this novel.

I love character development. Having bad traits is natural and watching characters making better of themselves is always satisfying for me. So I got a habit, I made a mental note of characters name and their bad traits. My note for this novel was like this:

Spoiler

Arim: coward
She was confronted by her enemies, falsely accused, insulted, then all she did was ran away with her tail between her legs.

I never expect her to give them a witty remark or to engage in a catfight, just retorting with a simple f*ck off! Or scram b*tch! Then its already okay for me, but no, she just silently ate all the crap.

Prillia: nosy
She loves minding other people's business, knowing the hottest gossip, giving unwanted advice, and stalking people around.

Typical collateral victim on detective stories where they got slaughtered not because they're impotant but because they saw, heard or knew something they shouldn't.

Ver: indecisive
He pushed FL away then he regret it, he pulled FL in then he felt dissapointed, he pushed FL away again then he regret it AGAIN.

He never knew what he wants so he decide things based on whether he likes it or not, one mood swing later and he will whine about everything. That type of person who will say "whichever is fine" then complain when its not.

Cecia: masochist
Her fiancee one sidedly ends their engagement, her father tries to marry her to an abusive man, her rival openly flirt with her ex and her new fiancee, her new fiancee is toying with her feelings, and she yield to all of them.

When they gave her an order she will slavishly follow like an obedient dog, when they do things to her she will endure it, and she wont even show any hint of annoyance. Infact she act like she deserves it. In one way she is similar to Arim, but with a big difference: Arim hates it, while she doesnt mind about it.

Roman: sadist
Intimidating, cunning, and playful. He dominate people with abusive and intimidating behavior, he then manipulate them into a weak position, then he enjoy the spectacle of a cowering victim.

He is your typical jerk that treat others like toys. He was so good at anything to the point that he got bored at everything. So he screw other people just for fun. If the results are just mere confusion, discomfort or embarassment the he is just a prankster. He is a bit too far, he enjoy inflicting fear.

[collapse]

So far its a promising note, I cant wait for them to develop. And they did developed, Prillia curb her nosyness, Cecia stand up for herself, etc. But I dont care. I literally dont care about them at all. I dont feel excited or happy or anything about them becoming better.

The author intentionally show their bad traits but somehow he/she forgot to show their good traits. Since I only saw their bad side I try not to associate myself to them. Ever have that person from your highschool that got so many bad rumors (drugs, crime, etc) about them you try not to associate yourself with them in any way? Yeah sort of like that. Did you know that they've gone clean rn? Orly? Cool (then awkwardly changing topic).

In short, too many bad traits, too few good traits. 2/5

To be honest, this is a breath of fresh air from the previous transmigration stories I read. Although it is a slow-burn, each situation is decently long, which makes the development between Prillance (main character) and Ver (love interest) seem very natural and pacing seem just right. I was expecting lots of misunderstandings that would be exploited to drag on the plot, but I was met with surprise that both characters are reasonable and thoughtful of one another. They're really likable and charming protagonists, so I am rooting for them... more>> and am excited about how this story will unfold.

Spoiler

I understand that people can find fault in Prillance's selflessness to give Ver a happy ending with Cecia (og protagonist), but everything she does makes sense. She's attempting to give her favorite side character a chance to get away from the awful ending of staying by his (will-be-married to Duke Tonz) ex-fiancée's side for the rest of his life. She, more than anyone, knows what it is like to have an unrequited/impossible love and watch someone else have them. She has been looking out for their happiness since the beginning, so it isn't strange that she is doing the same for Ver, who deserves way more than a false scandal that ruined his family and chances to be with Cecia. If she is going to extremes, proposing to Duke Tonz isn't a bad move since she doesn't care about her status anyway. In my opinion, I respect her so much and wish so much happiness for her. Of course, they have many cute scenes together that it doesn't even feel like she's trying to pursue the Duke so...

I really hated reading this. By chapter 35, my hatred for the FL was so intense that I had to stop reading. She came into the lives of these people, played around with their hearts and acted like she was trying to help. I've never seen someone fit the description of white lotus so perfectly. The ML deserves better.

What the hell is wrong with these characters... I know KR novels are all about angsty messed-up characters, but this just took it to another level.

I just read the comments and I'm laughing so hard because it seems like I'm not the only one who couldn't stand this after 30-ish chapters 😂

So we have a self-righteous highly entitled MC who plays with people's hearts like she's in her ultimate dollhouse thinking that she has the right to intervene with others' fate, a self-blaming hot-and-cold ML, an abusive manipulative psycho, and... more>> a doormat of a girl. Great! Just the perfect combination for a messed up plot everyone is craving for!

Except of course, the fact that not even one character in this novel is even remotely likeable.

Honestly though, the characters are super messed up, but they're so one-dimensional with no growth, especially the MC. Reading this reminds me of those cheap ass telenovelas where everybody is just so overly melodramatic with repetitive reactions and no clear moral values. Reading this would only give you a headache. <<less

The FL lead is so frustrating that I'm starting not to like her. She really about to fall on this sword for absolutely no reason. She just making things difficult and hurting people (her/Ml). Her doing all of this is looking bad like she playing both fields. Roman can kick rocks and at the moment (It might change later) I feel bad for Cecia. The only one I'm really worried about is Ver and his happiness. Him being happy means being with the Fl. She keeps inserting herself in stuff... more>> when she doesn't need to. It would have played out in her favor I can't. Her asking Roman to be her partner to these parties is embarrassing and desperate. I understand what she doing but it was still dumb. Her mentality of let me sacrifice myself for everyone is not good. I just want her to stop because I fill like Roman might agree to go with her this time. And that's just gonna hurt Ver more if he see them. 3.5 stars

Edit ch42.. So I hope Cecia doesn't turn into a "villainess"and if she does I blame Philla. From her point of view philla is playing with her and Vera heart (she is). Philla trying to put them together looks like she's trying to sabotage or ruin her life. She needs to accept that it's not a book their real people. Celia has no clue what her motives are just that her interfering is causing her pain. It seems like stuff is starting to click for her now after a certain incident. I can only hope. <<less

Based on the type of novels I'm compelled to write reviews for, I discovered that I love to immerse myself in these angst-filled, heart-wrenching stories. I haven't read too much of this novel but so far, it's fantastic. The angst is real but hopefully, it will be that much sweeter when their feelings are finally on the same page. The story is written and translated exceptionally well and I love the interactions between the four main characters, especially our main leads (and I don't mean that I like the personalities... more>> of the secondary characters but so far, I find Roman's mind games are at a much higher intellectual level, which I like better than the sounds-nice-but-b*tchy aristocratic gossip). The MC might be a bit busybody from others' point of view but I think she's such a sweetheart because she didn't take action to get herself out of her silent unrequited love, but she tries so hard to make it better for the ML and I think that's so sweet.

To start, here is a little background about myself. When I was in high school, I used to have a tumblr blog called just-invisible. It was inspired by this Taylor Swift song and essentially, it represented what I felt at that point of time in my life - just invisible. Maybe that’s why, from the prologue of the story, I was hooked. Because like Prillance (and Ver), I felt like a supporting role in my own life. I felt like I was unseen while other people stood out. (I’ve grown... more>> older now and know better now of course, but notwithstanding...)

I think that’s why I’m so protective of Prillance, because I saw myself in her. I understood her motivations and found that if I were in her shoes, I would have done the same thing. Yes, some people might find her s*upid, or “white lotus”, or a busybody, but for me, she stood true for who she was. All she wanted was to make Ver happy. Her decisions, although misguided, were driven by that.

For me a white lotus is someone who intentionally manipulates someone without regard for the other person. For instance, I disliked Aria from the Villainess Reverses the Hourglass because she intentionally manipulated Sarah, and faked her relationship with her in order to gain her connection (personal gain) while Sarah was nothing but genuine with her. Prillance, although she took action in order to achieve a certain goal, did not intentionally manipulate someone who was genuine with her. Nothing she did was for herself!!! Her actions wasn’t for her own personal gain.

I think it’s her selflessness that drew me to her. It’s because I know I would take the same actions. As someone who always catches second lead syndrome, if I had the chance to transmigrate into my favorite novel/drama, and I knew the ending for my bias the 2nd ML was tragic, then yes, I would try to make his story a bit happier. And yes, I wouldn’t even think about setting himself up with myself. I would try to set him up with the FL because I know he loves her and being with her would make him happy.

This novel felt like an ode to those who felt like supporting characters in their lives. To those who wished happiness on the character/person they loved, but ended up finding love along the way.

PS This is just my take on this. I understand people have different experiences, tastes and opinions, and I respect that. I myself am still on a journey to personal growth, but I just wanted to share what made this novel so special for me. <<less

I wont hide anything coz you can see the whole story in the first chapters. I had loved the novel but it was ridiridiculous so I stopped. First, it's probably because her experience of love is bad. She approached the "novel story" pretty badly too. F sakes. I first thought it was so effin s*upid. But oh well, that was written in the novel by the author and it was only translated by the translators so I cant be ungrateful. I'll break down:

Prillane - the transmigrator who loves the side character (originally a side character that loves the original male lead)

Vert- the side character that the Original female lead love and he loves the original female lead

... more>> Cecia- original female lead. Previously engaged with the side character

Roman- the original male lead (duke)

First, Vert is single. Why not offer a comfort by being together with him? Make him fall in love with you? Huh? Because you love him and he is pitifully SINGLE, why not approach him directly? Instead, Prillance used the original story that she-is-pushy-towards-the-duke-coz-she-loves-him. This to create an oppurtunity to Very and Cecia back together. This created a lot of unnecessary angst and misunderstanding that werent even properly resolved. Even in the end, it was badly resolved. Like a small comfort to the readers by making VERT and PRELLANCE together will solved everything. It's utterly not. SHE THE TRANSMIGRATOR instagated the misunderstanding to create an opportunity towards CECIA AND VERT by being together with f*ckin Duke ROMAN. WHICH IS UTTER RIDICOULOUS. The book one is all it has. Nothing was right. Book two, is the same and the rest is the same. Shame. I wont rate the translators for their hard work but I gave it a one star.

Such a beautiful and cute story. The ML and FL are nice people and for now, there is no annoying villain or incredibly candid character. I love it.

Also, the original work is easy to find and buy in Korean on Google App to support the author. A nice change.

Do not let the reviews and ratings fool you. The novel is horrendous, the MC is a cowardly, nosy and a martyr. She inserts herself into the lives of others without any concern for herself or others. She is a villan. All the other characters are very irritating as well. The ogML is a sadistic creep, like "call the police" creepy. The ogFL has no backbone, same as the MC, but you can somewhat pity her. The ML is indecisive.

Even though the MC knows that she has a bad end,... more>> she never addresses this and just is very very s*upid, she does unnecessary things just cause. All in all the novel is about an MC who believes she decides things for everyone else without any regard for herself or others. <<less

This story rubs me the wrong way. I rated it a two because it seems to be written well just that the misunderstandings between the FL and ML is getting ridiculous and I could sense that the author will just play this along until the end? And I'm too frustrated about it!

Spoiler

FL wants to pair ML (og 2nd ml) to OG FL because she pities their love by pairing herself with the OG ML. BUT she falls in love with ML and ML loves her too and the novel up to this point is how they secretly love each other.

  1. FL in past life was a coward and didn't reveal her love to her bff while he keeps getting on/off relationships. So usually isekai'd FLs would do the opposite of their past life, and would straight out confess their feelings aggressively but nope! She kept mum.
  2. She keeps meddling with the lives of the characters. All for the sake of making ML be with the OG FL! It ain't cute! And it causing this messy love square that's too frustraing to read.
  3. I guess unlike Villain's savior I like how that novel's FL kept the ML for herself. She didn't have to do a convoluted way of showing her love by letting her lover "go". Tsk!

Honestly, if the author's main intention was to create a satirical novel how the "pure" intentions of a white lotus FL can lead to disastrous consequences then she's done a great job

This novel is a bit tiring to be honest. There isn't any comedic relief in it either so it's a bit dull. She doesn't have many ambitions, she never has a clear plan, and she just blended into her new transmigration life to quickly and fluidly. I wish it delved more into her old life, I was always confused when it was brought up, wish it was more develped - that could be a translation issue though. It's not a bad story though.
