Cheng Yujin was the elder twin sister, who was supposed to be engaged to an excellent man. However she later learned that her fiance, Marquis Jingyong, had proposed to her because he mistakenly recognized her as her younger twin sister. Marquis Jingyong and her younger sister had a deep relationship, and after many twists and turns, finally broke through all hardships and became eternal lovers. While Cheng Yujin was the villain who replaced her sister’s good marriage, kept framing her sister, and hindered the main couple to be together. A really wicked older sister and poisonous late wife.

After the younger twin sister was reborn, she revealed Cheng Yujin’s ‘conspiracy’ early on. Everyone scorned her, and her so-called fiance was indifferent. Cheng Yujin sneered and tore off their engagement letter in front of her fiance.

Everyone was gloating and happily waiting to see her regret her actions. However, before Marquis Jingyong had a chance to see Cheng Yujin’s regret, he saw his former fiancee marrying her uncle.

The ninth uncle of Cheng family was truly a hidden dragon, his real power frightening everyone.

***

Cheng Yujin, this coquettish little wife, lightly lifted her eyebrows and casually said, “A mere Marquis Jingyong, is he worthy? Do you think that robbing him away will affect me?”

Almost forgot to say, ninth uncle wasn’t surnamed Cheng. His real name was Li Chengjing, the crown prince.

I like the MC! After reading some of the reviews I wasn't sure I would enjoy this novel but I do! Yes, the MC at times does some unscrupulous manipulative maneuvers but it is all for her to survive. She is a product of the harsh environment in which she grew up so it’s understandable she has to be ruthless at times but she doesn’t unnecessarily hurt or blame other people. She’s a fascinating character. She does talk a lot but having a glib tongue is one of the most... more>> effective tools she has in her arsenal so why not use it? I hope they translate more soon! <<less

I really enjoyed reading this. The relationship between Chen Yujin and Li Chenjing was both refreshing and heartwarming. They were both lonely lost souls that completed each other. It was so wholesome to watch them confide in each other and their interactions always leave you with a fuzzy feeling.

Chen Yujin is a likable protagonist who is extremely intelligent and witty, but she's not way too powerful that it isn't believable. Watching her in the beginning pursuing different husbands to finding her man was really a journey. It makes you wish... more>> the best for the both of them <<less

The novel is like a breath of fresh air after all the awful powerful Mary Sues and supreme, cold, powerful male leads. Cheng Yujin knows what she wants and she schemes for it. Yet, the fact that she is so capable makes it clear that sometimes ignorance can be a blessing. She had no choice but to sharpen her mind to survive in the hellhole she calls her family. Anyone else would have collapsed from the pressure. I often feel for her when she gets cornered by her entire family,... more>> who always tells her to 'bear it for the greater good' for her entire life, and she never gets rewarded by her family. Not one ounce of love she received was unconditional, except for the ML's love. It is no wonder she took a while to accept his love, because she was very aware of her situation; since she is from a declining family, how can she possibly marry a crown prince? It's much more realistic to go for someone nearer to your social status but also slightly higher.

The male lead, Li Chengjing is not your typical cold ML. He is capable as any other ML and his thinking is actually unique compared to the male rivals in the novel. For one, he actually believes that men are responsible for what happens in the rear court, a place that men often just throw their women in and never think about what happens inside. Most men think that it's the women's job to handle... their other women. Cheng Yujin said it clearly in the novel, how is that fair that women's great deeds are recorded under a man, and men get all the glory when things are great while women get all the shame when things goes wrong? Li Chengjing would literally make the ML of The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir ashamed, really. As a review of that novel mentioned, the ML of that novel literally lets his rear court be set on fire and never tries to extinguish it. Li Chengjing ensures none of that sh*t will happen when he is around and this is due to his personal experience. Also, living in the Cheng family has already shown him the shitshow of a rear court when managed poorly. He respects Cheng Yujin and never forces her to do anything against her will. He is patient and protective of her without being far too possessive.

The novel's short length works in its favour. Although it is great the political battles are not dragged out, I wished there was more of the main CP's time together. Cheng Yumo and Huo Changyuan gets screentime a little far more than I would have liked, but it makes a nice contrast to the main CP's development. I just wished that Cheng Yumo would have had matured, sadly she does not. It is fun to watch Cheng Yujin scheme and protect herself to the very best till the very end. This is a good novel where the main leads are nuanced, where they both empathize with each other on their loneliness caused by their personal circumstances.

About the male rivals: (spoilers ahead)

Spoiler

The other male rivals are kind of despicable except for Cheng Yujin's cousin and the official Li guy, tbh. First, Huo Changyuan is a fickle coward. He can't decide if he wants Cheng Yumo or Cheng Yujin, and it sickens me that he had second thoughts about his engagement by the time Cheng Yumo is wed to him. His second thoughts is partially due to him going back in time from the first timeline as well. He refuses to see the consequences of his own actions and he even caused Cheng Yumo to miscarry because he couldn't figure out how to handle his mother. This is a man who pushed his wife because he was fed up with her arguing with his mother, and Cheng Yumo miscarried as a result. Cheng Yujin dodged a bullet there, and it is no wonder she was so happy to escape the engagement. Dude, you made the bed, so now lie in it. He ends the novel completely depressed of what he had lost. A good dedicated wife that was Cheng Yujin. Even in the first timeline, he failed to protect her, and he still remains an idiot who cannot escape his mother's babying. Cheng Yumo was blind, but this side 'ship' is proof that sometimes love is not enough when you do not communicate.

Duke Cai is an as*hole through and through. He literally decides on Cheng Yujin being his second wife just because she was beautiful and that she happily fits the criteria that no other woman can possibly fulfill. What woman is willing to be a stepmother to a spoiled brat, get suppressed by his family and has literally nothing to gain from the marriage when said family says she should not desire fame or wealth. He thinks Cheng Yujin is being coy with him each time she rejects him, and he is complete scum. He coerces Cheng Yujin into a corner into marrying him by sending betrothal gifts, believing that her 'rightful place' is beneath him. Am not surprised that he is an example of a chauvinist living in those times. Cheng Yujin was right, what does his family have to offer her for a lifetime of hardwork? He was so 'shook' that a woman would dare reject him, NO.1 BEST GUY IN THE WORLD? Because of his meddling, Li Chengjing decided to reveal his true identity and marry Cheng Yujin. He disappears after they get married, so good riddance. Reading his monologue made my blood boil and pity Cheng Yujin as his offer to marry her forces her to her lowest point as the entire Cheng family tries to coerce her into marrying him as a second wife. This eventually led to her realising her increased dependence on Li Chengjing and slowly, she falls in love with him, so it's not that bad.

5 stars because I love the relationship between ML and MC. They are equally balanced and salvation to each other. However be warn, this is a slow romance. But its nice to read how their relationship gradually build naturally.

MTL most of the novel.

FL is very cunning, hilarious and smart. Her personality was very entertaining to read, her three views were eye opening. It took me awhile to get used to her way of thinking.

I enjoyed her interaction with ML the most. However, what a pity the romance is abysmal. At least until chapter 99 (raw), even snusnu time is unromantic. In fact it was not mentioned and they're done. Aish ?

There are some inconsistencies in the plotline. The timeline mentioned previously didn't match with the following scene. It's... more>> like the author lost track of the storyline. Overall it's a promising story but kinda flat. Sometimes it had deep meaningful scene but then it fell to a monotonous dialogue which was mentioned over and over.

I was impatient with the repetition of memories recollection of the past that seemingly endless. Thus I skipped to the last few chapters. For me, the completion of the novel was anticlimactic.

An unvarnished MC and a slow-to-defrost ML, if you like (or at least don't mind) both the MC and ML having a veneer of arrogance. I say "veneer" since it's more appropriately just plain confidence: they're both very good at what they do, so their arrogance is warranted, because they both are that good.

That aside, it's a bit of a wish fulfillment for stoic, self-contained readers (not counting when the reader, like the MC, puts on an act). By the end, the story sure seemed to conclude that if you... more>> were excited, interested, bedazzled by your betrothed -- even if it was mutual -- that it was inevitable the man would grow disillusioned. Apparently vivacious young women who were fun and interesting somehow inevitably make for miserable and shrewish wives. (Which it seems is not the man's fault, nor does the story punish any man for that perspective, other than by being miserable as well.)

The other part that bothered me was the lack of plot-points where our MC is really pushed to the edge. We never see her practicing, or even failing and then perfecting (her calligraphy might be an example, except despite judged as lacking compared to someone else, she still considers her own skill stellar). She enters the story having already perfected all the tiny things, including (for reasons never explained) the esoteric intricacies of palace etiquette. (I would've been fine if she'd taken two or three times to get a movement right, and the palace ladies were more astonished by how quickly she could master things, because then we would've seen her making effort.)

What the MC never, ever lacks for is a sharp comeback. She's like an urban fantasy MC where she can fight well at night, wears couture during the day, and has a snappy comeback for everything, courtesy the script. The rare times we see the MC start to falter, someone sweeps in (most often the ML) to save the day, whether the MC knows it or not. She endures her family's nonsense yet remains a paragon of perfection, and we never really see her pushed to the point of desperation. Okay, maybe once, in the last few chapters where she actually has an argument. Which by that point, I expected a hell of a lot more fireworks to make up for 100-something chapters of buried emotions. But the last thing that bugged me the most is that there really isn't a reason for any reincarnation, let alone three different characters "remembering" a previous life. The only thing that reincarnation provided was a) an excuse for the MC to know the misery she'd face with one possible choice plus some bare outlines of other future events, and b) an excuse for the MC's sister -- and eventually the sister's husband -- to end up thoroughly miserable. The story doesn't even provide resolution for either; the sister is left angry and certain it's the MC's fault. Actually, there are several other women who end up with the same angry, bitter attitude towards the MC, who of course just sails forward in unbroken perfection, ignoring the haters.

If you can get past those things, you'll probably like the story.

(As long as you're also okay getting past the need to learn pinyin-mandarin for things that actually translate easily. I'm baffled at the insistence of di/shu, since legitimate and illegitimate capture the most important points for an english-speaking audience. Or using gu/zhen/etc for the royal family's version of 'I' -- we have the majestic plural in english that works the same way and gets the point across. Don't get me started on 'biao'. Just spell it out: maternal aunt, maternal elder cousin-brother, etc. We have english for all these things, and all the pinyin does is trip readers up.)

Other than those quirks of pinyin-intrusion, for the most part the translation is well-written and flows naturally. It's absolutely not the translator's fault that the original author couldn't seem to realize that it doesn't detract from the MC's happiness if other women are also allowed to be happy. <<less

I wanted to like it I really did but compared to other historical romances this was subpar. The Romance between the main leads felt off. And as I read further it felt like a chore, bland and boring.

It's just my opinion.

BEWARE of SPOILER

The blurb was the biggest spoiler.

Spoiler

1st Life
Chen Yujin and her entourage saved Marquis Jingyong, who was recuperating inside a cave. They got married. But, Chen Yumo, her younger sister, told Marquis Jingyong, that she was the person who saved him first. She left him in the cave to go and look for help when Chen Yujin found him. Marquis Jingyong accepted Chen Yumo in his family and wanted to make her his second wife. Heartbroken, Chen Yujin died after she gave birth. Her son was also dead after being neglected by the family.

Li Chengjing as the Crown Prince and then the Emperor, never married. A Taoist Master told him that he only had one life partner and she was already dead. Li Chengjing then started to have vivid dreams a.k.a. The 2nd Life. He found out about Chen Yujin and how Marquis Jingyong and his family treated her which led to her death. He retaliated against Marquis Jingyong even though he only met Chen Yujin in his dream.

2nd Life
Both Chen Yujin and Chen Yumo were reborn. Chen Yujin was already engaged to be married to Marquis Jingyong but, Chen Yumo told him early on that she was his savior. Marquis Jingyong decided to break his engagement with Chen Yujin and chose Chen Yumo as his wife. Chen Yujin then met her Ninth Uncle and both of them were given a task to prepare a gift for the Emperor. She also met with Ninth Uncle's friends. She decided to find her own husband and came to the conclusion that Ninth Uncle's friends were the best candidates. Little did she know that Ninth Uncle wasn't blood-related to her and was also interested in her. He was her biggest obstacle in finding a husband. After some ups and downs, Chen Yujin married her Ninth Uncle, who was Li Chengjing, the Crown Prince. Her desire to one-up Chen Yumo finally paid off.

3rd Life
Li Chengjing was reborn (from the 1st life) days before he returned to Chen's Mansion. With the knowledge from his 1st and 2nd (dream) life, he decided to make his dream life come true.

[collapse]

Note:
Chen Yujin was portrayed as someone with knowledge and experience even though she was only 14. She knew how to tackle every problem that came her way. In her 1st life, for example, she knew how to handle her annoying mother-in-law. In her 2nd life, she overcomes every problem thrown her way.

Chen Yujin's fraternal twin, Chen Yumo, never had it easy in her life. In her 1st life, she had Chen Yujin as a shield against Marquis Jingyong's mother. Even though it wasn't told in detail the aftermath of Chen Yujin's death, but, from the input we got from the 2nd life, one could already imagine the ending for Chen Yumo. In the 2nd life, Chen Yumo thought everything would be easy for her. But, without Chen Yujin as a buffer, she's practically a fool.

Marquis Jingyong was another fool in this story. Technically, both Chen Yujin and Chen Yumo were his savior. Chen Yumo found him injured and got him inside a cave, and instead of finding help, she did the unthinkable. She stayed with him in the cave for a few days, using her body to shield the cold. Chen Yujin found him in the cave after Chen Yumo left and with her servants, brought him to get help. But, because Chen Yumo used her body, in his eyes, she did more than Chen Yujin. He regained his memory from the 1st life. In the memory, we could see that he regretted his decision to take Chen Yumo as his second wife. Alas, it was all too late because Chen Yujin died. He then neglected their son because he looked just like Chen Yujin, which led the child to his death after he drowned in a pool. In the 2nd life, he was again too late as Chen Yujin was already betrothed to Li Chengjing.

There was debate about whether Li Chengjing was reborn in the 2nd life or not. Most agreed that he was reborn in the 3rd life as there were some discrepancies if he was reborn in the 2nd life. For example, he only showed interest in Chen Yujin when she started pursuing his friends. If he was reborn in the 2nd life, he would have shown interest in her the first time they met.

Overall, I like the plot. Chen Yujin and Li Chengjing made a power couple. It may seem like they were icy in personality but, their background dictated them that way. I followed the translation team for almost 2 years and was sad to say goodbye. <<less

Absolutely loved this novel. So great, the palace intrigue was not overstated, the time skips were made appropriately. At no point in this novel did I every feel like I have to set it down do to boredom. Amazingly paced, and I absolutely loved the characterisation made by the author. Completed through MTL. This is my second novel by this author. The first one was I Became The Stepmother of My Ex-husband. I have to say I like GNU more. Cheng Yujin character is well built and well explained on why she is the way she is. She is really really long-winded. If I were to meet her IRL, I'd tell her to shut up LOL.

The way she tried to catch herself an ideal husband while being ignorant of Li Chengjing's feeling was funny and cute.

I enjoyed reading it but... more>> the reason GNU is not one of my top favorites is that the romance felt very one-sided. Only toward the very end, Cheng Yujin "kind of" reciprocated. I understand her character: she's perfect for this story and perfect as Li Chengjing's crown princess. If I were her, I'd think like her too. But the story doesn't give enough scenes of Cheng Yujin eating humble pie/ surrender to be satisfactory for me. <<less

It was a refreshing read. The MC is capable and hard-working, but she, as a woman in that era, had a lot of limits and suffered a lot. She doesn't seem to long for love, she has a goal and does what she can to achieve it. Along the way she suffers and finds love unexpectedly.
Spoiler

She struggles a lot at home and has to be calculating to not suffer too much at the hands of her family, her bad treatment is not obvious in the way that she gets physically abused or things of that nature, but she gets excluded and mistreated in other ways, she does not truly have a family and feels lonely (which the ML changes later on ;)).

[collapse]
Because of the ML there are some political themes and there is also some palace intrigue, but it is not the focal point, at least not in the majority of the story.

There is romance but, while there are some romantic moments sprinkled through the story,
Spoiler

she only really falls in love with him some time after they get married or rather she notices/accepts it at that time. The reasons she marries him are not really romantic and at the start it left me feeling a little bitter, but I completely understand why she does what she does and I respect her reasons as a person in that position in that era. He knew about her reasons as well. She is a product of her experience so the slow paced romance and her reluctant/distant attitude which she mostly sheds in the end but never completely, is really realistic.

[collapse]

The ML has some flaws but he is actually so respectful and loving to our MC, he dotes on her so much and treats her as an equal, everyone that sees their interactions gets flabbergasted and envious, they got me giggling and blushing.

All in all it's a well rounded story, never really boring (some things made me so nervous my heart palpitated) and shows you how two people who only ever planned to achieve their goals and never thought they would find love or true happiness, found each other,
Spoiler

opened their heart to each other and got to be together after some hurdles :)

Translation quality:🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Plot quality: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Character characterization quality: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

... more>> Ease of reading: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

FL Quality: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Quality of ML: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Quality of supporting cast: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

No unnecessary bashing, no decrease in IQ to advance the plot, characters have their own personality and intelligence, no unnecessary and tiresome excesses that don't seem to lead anywhere, every scene seems to carry a purpose to the story and the details are very real. There are smart people, dumb people, altruistic people, self-centered people, etc. What increases the credibility and quality of the work. I can easily see this becoming a palatial historical TV drama that I would binge watch. Despite carrying some clichés everything is well crafted and not overdone.

The hardest thing here was keeping track of all the titles, so I took one star off for readability, however all the etiquette, policy, and schematic details, including the titles are a vital part of the story that I wouldn't give up, the point taken is due to my own lack of knowledge of the subject and not the quality of the story/translation.

Another point that attracted me a lot here was the lack of the standard helpless maiden routine waiting to be saved by the big strong ML, while there are times when she needs or depends on the ML, the FL is not dumb and helpless. She is highly intelligent and adaptable without being obviously Mary Sue. The ML has its own personality and plot, rather than being a wall of ice made to support beauty to progress the plot. He's not some scum that anyone with the slightest bit of a brain would date in the in the real world unlike many other ML's out there, he is respectful and caring of FL and their relationship is based on trust and they both support each other.

This is currently my favorite read in the Chinese/historical/palace genre.

In conclusion: this is a highly recommended work for anyone looking for a story with depth and quality, it is certainly worth reading and indispensable in its genre. <<less

First of all, thank you for translating this novel 😘

This is a typical novel about FL rebirth and gets second chance to live her life to not repeat the same mistake she did. She married a scum in her previous life but after rebirth she 'befriend' her 'uncle' without knowing his true identity.

Everyone in the FL's family is pathetic and her initial antagonis was her twin sister. Typical evil twin sister keeps on snatching her stuffs and envy her beauty and talent but eventually dig her own hole. Later on... more>> when the FL gets married, she has to deal with her monsterous in laws.

Well, the story started off pretty good. The characters, plot and schemes were not complicated or heavy. This is like a light version of 'The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage' novel.

When I read novel like this kind of genre, I always want to know the ending of the all the antagonis/bad people and the FL/ML family. For the complete satisfication. Unfortunately, this novel has happy ending for both FL and ML lead but hanging on some of the side characters. The ending seems to be a bit rush I guess?

My main complaint is that from the very beginning, FL is known as cold 'boring beauty' hence she was avoided by most of the man. She was described as way too perfect with no emotion her face. The ML was the one who will slowly break her ice and makes her warm with emotion and love. He was yearning for her genuine love and affection. The author did shows that but unfortunately it was not much of it. The story will be much better if the author can give more interaction of the FL and ML. There was not even a scene of their first kiss lolll. It's just mentioned they had their successful wedding night and the ML continues the 'deed' while being shameless. Not asking for smut but at least a more details POV of the FL will help the reader to feels the changes or emotions if the two of them. I'm highlighting this part because entire the novel, the FL is constantly labeled as such even the ML always teased her that.

I like to read a complete novel and fully invested into it. This novel is good, light and less complicated than other rebirth + scheming novel but I was expecting a little more. 😊 <<less

The story is overall great. FL, Cheng Yujin's Adoptive mother doesn’t love her; her biological mother is waiting to take benefits from her. She’s so pitiful. The annoying part is that the author keeps repeating her story over and over again trying to get sympathy from the readers. But afterward kind of stopped repeating at the end.

Cheng yumo is one ridiculous character. She time traveled after rebirth, so she is slightly older when she dies, but she still acts like a 14-year-old!! Damn, she’s so naïve.
