After leading a life of luxury, Aria unfairly meets death because of her sister Mielle’s schemes. And right before she dies, she sees an hourglass fall as if it were a fantasy. And just like that, she was miraculously brought back to the past.

In order to face the villainess, she must become an even more wicked villainess. This was the new path Aria chose to take revenge on Mielle who mu*dered both her and her mother.

The official translation for this starts middling and gets worse with time.

The initial premise is quite interesting and probably the first 50 chapters or so are pretty nice. Like a 3, 4 if the transaltion was decent. The MC is an actual villainess. She plots, she seduces, she is a bit vicious, pretty fun.

A minor gripe in this section is that the Count and especially the Countess don't really make sense as charcters. Why would the mother that worked so hard on keeping Aria alive in the first place... more>> just abandon her after she is the Countess ? At least explain this.

However, as the MC gets close to the main lead, things become significantly less interesting since Aria is no longer at a disadvantage, but at the same time she has no particular plan, she just responds to events while accumelating money. I don't understand how she can even do that as a minor, but fine. Like that Empire has some seriously progressive property rights. I'm not sure minors today would be allowed to do what she did and not have the money transfterd to the control of her parents. It was fine when she was doing things secretly, but she revelaed herself...

Then the plot becomes increasingly sillier.

Spoiler

For example, Aria knows Millie plans to trap her on a particular day, but she has no idea how, and she still decides to blindly step in for no reason. If you know it is coming and staying at a hotel for a night will ruin the scheme against you, why not do it ? This whole arc is pretty silly. Even if Asher didn't teleport her out, there would still be no actual evidence against Aria. Only Millie's word against hers, and since Aria has the support of the Crown Prince, I can't see how Millie can threathen random minor nobles more than the Crown Prince... It was just a bad scheme, which she should have avoided in the first place.

Then the whole treason arc is just ridiculous. That plan is way too complicated to have no one suspect a trap. Also, why would the aristocrats have zero soldiers of their own ? The whole point of a high ranking noble is that he is paying for soldiers. Then, there are chapter after chapter on how exactly this plot against the aristocracy will be upehld in court, while it depends on things like convicing some of the aristocrats to rat on the others for a reduced sentence, but we are also told that said collaborators actually will still be hanged because their crime is so serious that the reduction is meaningless. Are you serious ? The aforementioned collaborators didn't demand to know what sentence they will get ? How s*upid are they ?

Then we are told the accused nobles can't hire lawyers to defend themselves because part of the plan was to rob them and confiscate their lands before they are found gulity. This isn't intelligent or moral. I can't see how behaving this way towards part of the nobility will not lead the rest to rebel seeing as they are under clear threat by the royal family. Any one of them can be arrested and prevented from being able to defend himself. All of this behaviour just justifies the Aristocratic party in the first place. Not to mention the one judge in the story that is responsible for dealing with the nobility is part of the royal family.

I don't understand the implied immorality of the aristocratic faction simply on the basis that they limit the power of the royal family... that sounds great to me. While far from a democratic republic is still better to have a 1000 powerful families insetad of 1.

[collapse]

So all of this is very poorly written, and the conflicts of the MC are already basically over by chapter 210 so why are there still 80 chapters in the story ? I didn't care enough to find out. <<less

I like this story!! The MC is strong women in the second life. In the first life she was a poor brat that live with her prostitute mother (her mother isn't a bad person), she had a rough life and didn't know anything about politic or high society, but one day her mother married with nobleman and that the start of her sh*tty life. Her new siblings cant accepted their father action especially little sister, and this girl is the one who manipulated our MC to be a villainess in... more>> her first life.

Spoiler

In second life, MC now can see what is what and act as like a noblewomen should do and try to revenge. I like that MC now know that her step sister isn't clever like she thought in her previous life and how much idiot of herself in the past life so she try hard to improve her knowledge and her skill. In the end I think she is now better than the prince.

I decided to pick it up after several times putting off reading this book because of the reviews.

To me, it's not as bad as said in reviews. Just what I need after reading a book with heavier plot. It's a light read that'd require not much thinking, and sometimes it's nice to just enjoy the read without putting too much thought in everything.

I would personally rate this 4.1 star based on how much I enjoy reading this.

The VILLAINESS reverses the hourglass

(So I forgot what site I'm supposed to reply this because I accidentally cleared my chrome data so i'll just post here)

Might be a spoiler

Spoiler

I don't know why some people hate MC for being 'wicked' (he or she hates Aria because of what she did to count's family) because if you read the title you'll know she's a villain (And if you read the novel/manhwa you know that the count's daughter and isis tries to put dirt (/kill her like the carriage thing if I remember it correctly) on aria's name both in first and second life so she's just getting revenge and if she didnt stop count's daughter and isis plans to ruin her she might be dead now

3.5 "almost there but not quite" stars

I came from the manhwa, which is pretty popular and going strong. I found the place the manhwa left off (around ch 160 of the translated chapters) and I was excited that the novel was fully translated. Buttt I had trouble reading the novel version and was just not invested in it. The fun face-slapping and schemes in the manhwa felt dull and tedious in the written novel, and I skimmed until the HEA ending. I'm disappointed since the manhwa was pretty strong, but... more>> the novel itself just failed to catch my attention.

TRANSLATION

So Novel Updates doesn't list the chapters, but you can find them (up to ch 288) by Googling the name of the novel. I thought the ending was quite abrupt, and it's because the side stories aren't translated, although I pretty much figured out the storyline thanks to the spoiler forum for this book on Novel Updates. In short, the side stories are about
Spoiler

the main characters' kids who are twins and their antics/powers

[collapse]
. It's super sweet, but bummer that it wasn't fully translated...

The translation itself is a little rough. When I first started, there were quite a few syntax problems but it kinda got better along the way. At that point though I started skimming because the story was getting drawn-out (especially the denouement after the big baddies got taken down). It wasn't perfect, but I'm grateful for the translation all the same.

CHARACTERS/STORY

Reading the manhwa, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and was much more invested in them compared to reading the translations. I'm not sure if it was the translations or just the writing that made me lose interest. Anyhow, the ML crown prince, Asher, was mysterious and charming in the manhwa, and the MC Aria was revenge-driven and slightly selfish (in a you-die-or-I-die kind of way). Aria does grow a bit throughout the story, and people she used as tools end up becoming her good friends that she makes sure also gets their happy endings. (Yay!) It's actually quite sweet despite the violent beginning.

Basically, Aria starts out with a fairytale story of her prostitute mother marrying into a noble's household. However her step-siblings hate her and her maids conspire against her. This basically creates a toxic environment where she's caught up with the traps set by her, called a villainess, and dies by the hands of her step-siblings. At the time of her death, an hourglass appears, "saves her" by rewinding time, and she gets her second chance by using her past life's knowledge to beat the aristocratic families that discriminated against her so much in the past. In short, she's acting to become the saintess rather than the villainess in this life.

I really enjoyed Aria's character, as she not only used her previous life's knowledge, but read up about accounting and finance to undergo business ventures. I admire female leads who do that because the author's showing rather than telling about her wit and smarts. Asher, the male lead, is a less drawn-out character who remains pretty mysterious (seriously, is there even a scene that talks about his father the emperor?? I might have missed it but I'm pretty sure he's a non-existent character). Even so, in the manhwa Asher is charmed by Aria's determinedness and wit. His motives aren't explained that well (ex: why is he always roaming around in the streets as a crown price? Lmao) but in general this story doesn't have extreme depth to its scenarios.

THE STORYLINE ITSELF...

Like I said, ya ain't gonna find any mastermind-like scheming in here. There's a lot of satisfying face-slapping (so yes, this story stays pretty true to its revenge theme), but the methods are simple and straightforward. The actual "climax, " like another reviewer stated, is minimal in action and maximal in anti-climax. A lot of the planning by Asher is done off-screen. It's quick and gets the job done, which makes for a fast read, and nothing that will make your gears turn. The villains are composed of the step-siblings and their supporting faction of aristocrats that are trying to undermine the crown prince's power. They're not very smart, but they are fun to hate so it didn't bother me. I would say to read this for the face-slapping, rather than any intricate plotline.

I enjoyed the screen time given to Aria's maids and her friend Sarah. I thought they were really lovable female characters that may have had a transactional relationship with Aria in the beginning, but changed throughout the story (mostly due to Aria's character development). They also made for some nice comedic moments too. I'm happy to report that they get good endings as well.

OVERALL

I'm actually pretty disappointed at the actual translated chapters compared to the manhwa, which was addicting and beautifully-drawn. It would have been nice to read the side stories translated as well... either way, The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass is ultimately a story that had all the right components in it, but not exactly the right execution. Like I said, not bad, but it could be so much better. Overall though, I liked Aria's character and the romance (aka the main reason why I read these things, other than the satisfying revenge), was sweet enough. That's why it's a 3.5, which is "decent" in my books, but rounded down, because if it went through a little more editing as a whole, it could've been better.

Trigger Warnings: poisoning, beheading, mild torture (minimal blood/gore but still mentioned on page), psychological warfare and abuse

TL;DR Read this if you're into:

  • Villainess stories that are straightforward in their schemes
  • Cute romance with smart leads
  • Manhwas that are better than the actual translations... sorry author/translators :')
  • An MC who grows to recognize her love for the people around her
  • Hidden parentage, mistaken identity, and grand reveal themes
  • Satisfying face-slapping revenge plots...
  • And a happily ever after!

A cool nice FL and interesting story. I would like more of her revenge sometimes, but there is a nice pace and enjoyable development. There is only one open thread with one male character that was not resolved per se, but it was a nice novel. You should read if you like revenge stories with a cunning MC and full of badass moments for her.

This is an awesome story. (I'll read the novel when I have time.) I've only read the manhwa up until chapter 54. I have no problems. Absolutely lovely. Love it very much. I rather not read novels because I'm someone who gets bored very fast to the point I fall asleep. The story itself isn't boring but specifically reading is boring to me. So sadly, I'll just have to stick with the manhwa because it actually shows me what's going on 'cause sometimes I have a hard time understanding most... more>> things when reading novels. Whenever people say the Villainess Aria is so boring it makes my blood boil. So do me a favor and shut up. I know it's a review but your destroying people's hopes and dreams for this story. I like Aria and Asher a lot. I don't understand why you will say bs in your review. Though, there could be some unlikable things near the chapters above 100. But I don't give 2 f*cks bruh- This story is good for now. Probably will bring some triggers along the way near the ending but I'll still give this story a 11/10. Nice! <<less

In the beginning I thought Aria actually fell for Oscar in the beginning but as the story goes on you can see that she really just wanted to use him even though she couldnt. The relation between the MC and ML is so cute. The MLs reactions to the MCs teasing is so cute!

By the time I got to chapter 195, I got kinda bored and just wanted to finish the novel. Luckily I found a review that basically sums up the whole novel which helped me skip 40-50 chapters and motivated me to continue reading. The story is unique for a novel with a villainess theme. The FL was resolute of being the villainess herself while changing the future. For me, the romance was like a sideline of the story haha. I mean, the main part of the story was her revenge to her step sister, brother and father. FL's character development was good, using everything she have in order to survive and using quite of her brain cells. She's definitely a bad and malicious person considering how she manipulates people even though she didn't... more>> directly hurt someone. It's a nice story/plot but then again, the romance was quite lacking for me.😅 <<less

It is really refreshing to finally see an actual villainess make her appearance. As a character the MC seems more genuine to me than others in the same genre. She does not go through a sudden personality change but she learns from her prior mistakes and struggles in her own way to her goal. Throughout the read she seems to grow and tries to challenge her troubles head on instead of avoiding them.

This story is amazing, I had read it til the 'end' (to those who knows what I mean *hands up*) and I'm still reading it again and again. The protagonist is very witty and wicked to the point I wanted to join her revenge. This story is very polished if I may say.

However, the story is cliche for a 'villainess' to reverse the time and take her revenge. In addition, rich/wealthy protagonist + wickedness +witty + beautiful MC = the best villainess

it's a new source of life to those... more>> who likes vengeful villainess.

I hope the story will be finished soon (here) <<less

Finished the novel.

Really interesting and satisfying yet not fully. Feels like the revenge wasn't all out but fully justified. Love the growth of the FL and ML, plus the connection they had explained the hourglass so I feel like the story was complete but makes me yearn for more. Hopefully there'll be a sequel, because they have a interesting story they can follow up with the power of "survival" and I want to see more from the end game couple!

First time writing a review so, don't expect me to be so detailed on this.

It's basically a fight between evil sisters taken on another level. The MC is refreshing, she knows that what she wants and does it independently. She's evil and is portraying a saintess, kind and loving facade to enchant her prey 'Oscar'. She gets her happy ending and all the people who did her dirty in her past life gets beheaded in her stead. But things I didn't like was the fact that

From the start I was fascinated reading the synopsis and it did not disappoint me. The characters are much like alive with their advantages and disadvantages, further in the end both accepting their faults and who they were. All the stages were written logically and almost flawless! Nice character development and all in all I would give 100% to this novel.

So its been a long time since I last read this novel and now I decided to write a review.

Spoiler
  1. The plot is extremely interesting and could make you 'feel' sad, angry, happy and many others. Readers would always like to see a 2-faced b**** be face slapped and her family tr*sh included. Also face-slapped she did.
  2. Female lead is awesome. She's truly the definition of a badd ass female lead. Also FL is also a bit no a two-face but it was all for a good cost. To me, nothings wrong with FL just that she's a bit viscous like how she used her tutor and used her maids but I can understand why she did though cuz the others were viscous first so how could she not be viscous.
  3. Male lead has many flaws for me but he still has the attitude of a ml. Flaws like he misunderstood MC and her sister although he did not know who is who so I could understand but I still feel a bit resentful cuz how would you feel if your enemy is being given valuable stuff while your being ignored especially if the gifts were suppose to be for you. Also I didnt like at first how ML was flirty and clingy was he to the FL cuz out of nowhere he almost killed FL and also just because he wants to flirt with FL means he could I mean he's a stranger and he almost killed her but thats the how novel works where the to main leads will fall inlove. It would be great if he didnt fall inlove immediately and first start to get along with the FL but not just suddenly giving flowers.

All in all its a good novel and very satisfying for she succeeded on making all of those who deserve to suffer indeed suffered.I especially like how the count realizes how evil his daughter is. Theres also that evil sister dying that felt good. Everything ended as how it should've been. This novel is one of the best novels I had read I recommend for you to read it♡.

This novel is quite nice and engaging. The FeMC gives very satisfying downfalls to those who had hurt her and that's very entertaining to read and makes you want to know what kind of antics will she pull next. I love some of her insight into politics and also the scheming, although I find her business exploits too easily achieved but understandable as she could predict the flow of trade by knowing the future. The ML is alright. He isn't forceful and tries to respect her boundaries and even had... more>> an inkling that she didn't really feel like a kid playing around. I really liked how these two characters interacted with each other and their efforts to put their plans into action. The plot twist certainly caught me surprised but it was a good explanation as to how she got her time-travel abilities.

All in all, this had been a fun read and would recommend it! <<less

This is easily one of the best webnovels I’ve read. (I’ve only given it 4 stars bc I don’t give out 5/5 unless the novel is near perfect)

The MC uses her knowledge of the past very well, but it never felt like she was way too op. She’s also not a saint and actually sometimes feels like a villainess, unlike many of these “villainesses” in kr/jp novels. I feel like all of her actions were mostly justified even though she might’ve gone a bit too far sometimes.

What I also... more>> found refreshing was the natural time progression and character development without needing to use time skips. <<less

The last sentence of the novel perfectly sums up the story. The main character Aria is an unrepentant villain, and has good reason to be, but she has a good heart to.

I enjoyed the journey a lot.

The one thing to keep in mind is that NO ONE is good in this story. Everyone is flawed and terrible. The MC is just as flawed and villianess as everyone else. The people who aren't outright awful people are just semi awful people who let the truly awful people live out their truly awful potential.

The MC is beautiful, smart, and has memories of a tragic tragic past. And she's out to get those who did her and hers wrong, even if she stoops to... more>> their level. She admits that she's an awful person, and just shrugs. I really enjoyed the small touches of the VERY FEW (like 2 out of a 25+ characters) genuinely good people in this story and how they affect her, slowly showing her that the world isn't truly the hell she's always thought and thinks.

I've seen comments saying that her treatment of the other characters is too harsh, and I'd have to say I totally disagree. They're terrible people. They not only completely tr*shed and destroyed her in her past life, but even in the present life where she stops them from doing all the awful things, they still are truly terrible people inside.

The ending was a bit weak, but the 200+ chapters was an enjoyable read for me. The ML was sweet to her (although both are questionable on the good to evil scale), I loved seeing her find peace for herself. Not a reread, but def should give it a try. <<less

I initially had reservations about this novel because of the mixed reviews. It was difficult to read the first 100 chapters as it was mostly on establishing the plot and the villain vs villain roles (it is especially dragging if you wanted major romance, since that only starts after ch 150). Buuut, I actually enjoyed reading this novel. Among the Villainess stories out there, this is the one that truly stuck with the definition of a villain. Early on it was stated that to defeat a wicked person, Aria has... more>> to be more wicked. My favourite part of this novel is this:

"The wicked woman who had killed the wicked woman was not a saint, but a simple victor who has been given the opportunity to carry out her evil deeds. It was not right for someone of the same filth to pretend to be more holy."

It started becoming more enjoyable on the latter half. The plot wasn't very intricate, but I appreciated that the MC remained a Villainess through and through.

And contrary to what others say, I actually liked how the ML fell not just for MC's pretty face but for her smarts as well. Some say that this was just cheats because she already experienced the future, however it was emphasized that just having knowledge isn't enough, but knowing HOW to use it is what made MC smart. Later on, it was also elaborated that ML accepts MC wholly, and even enjoys her dark side. So I am quite happy with how everything turned out.
Spoiler

On the ending of Mielle, I believe that Aria still gave her a chance to prove that she could change. She advised to control the amount of the poison flower so as just to induce stomachache, and did not directly say to plot to kill Annie. Also, really? To sympathise with someone who was willing to push their own father down the stairs and blame it on someone else. That was like the ultimate flag ? Saying *MAJOR EVIL* Even Aria said that she wouldn't think of doing that herself, as she worried about the count and was even willing to use the Hourglass even though she would be left alone in the villa in the forest. So yeah, the ending for Mielle was well-deserved by her in my opinion.

Cain however, I was a bit torn. But then, even in real life there's a saying that, "He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it." ― Martin Luther King, Jr.
So for all the early days where Cain didn't even try to mingle with Aria and her mom, or rebuke Mielle, he is just as guilty. Same is true for the count. Even the countess said so, that all the problems wouldn't have happened if from the start he advised his children that, "they are from humble origin, but they are family now." He basically did nothing to prevent the animosity within his family, only repenting in the end.

[collapse]

What I just wished for more was just a peek about Aria having a child too and staring their own family, since "having a family" is basically the huge plot point in Aria's growth. Nevertheless, this is one realistic novel. Even in real life, you can't always be a saint, gotta be a villain too. :) <<less
