As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

This novel was the first Chinese novel I've ever read and I'm glad that it was the first one.

The world building is amazing and had a way to immerse me fully in the novel. The thing that I liked the most about this novel is the characters. Aside from the MC and ML that were both beautifully written, the side characters were all written with each of their own depth that made them unique and made the characters stand on their own without feeling like they're just there to make... more>> the MC and ML stand out. <<less

The novel didn't entirely revolve around the love story, and to me that was one of it's good points. Even if you removed the romance from ot completely, it would still be a master piece 100% worth reading. But that doesn't mean the love story was badly written or easily forgettable. All the contrary! Has to be one of my favourites ever, romance is not really my thing to begin with so I'm really picky about what I read. The relationship between the MC and ML is never exposed and... more>> explained super clearly which I've seen some people complain about, but that's what I think made the story this much more interesting. It actually makes you think. <<less

MDSZ is about the Founder of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian from his youth to his death to his rebirth. It's a story about war, loss, ghosts and ghouls. Most importantly to me it's a beautiful romance between a cheeky rebellious, carefree boy and a boy who grew up under the strict discipline of 3000~ish rules. ML, Lan Wangji will make your heart skip with his character development. From cold, strict and rule-abiding to the doting, adorable, sweet man he later becomes. I read MDSZ after TGCF and though it didn't... more>> grip me the way TGCF did that didn't mean it wasn't absolutely a literary masterpiece. If TGCF to me is God-tier, MDSZ isn't a slouch. Raunchier than TGCF, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying will grip you by the golden core. To say I haven't read a better novel wouldn't be an exaggeration (besides the other novels by MXTX).

First Review, tho I guess it cant be considered a review.

Its been quite awhile since I finished this novel, and I absolutely love it.

Often I'll be doing something and suddenly think about Wei Wuxian., oh how I miss this shamless little shou. I plan to reread when I have the time.

... more>> It's been awhile so obviously my memory of this novel isnt as fresh, but this is definitely a favorite of mine. You will not regret reading it.

Also review above me complained that they didnt put any warning about this being a BL in the tags.... did you check the genre before reading? Also... one of the tags for this novel is 'Manly Gay Couple'.... <<less

A SOLID 5/5. Great characters and plot, with some smut scenes as a bonus. :≫ *smirks* Re-read it a few times, also listened to the drama CD, read the manga, watched the live-action and anime. The mysterious element is good as well.

It's a bit hard to remember the character names etc, so would be good if you watch the anime first or something (after all a novel is better than the anime adaptation so if you read before you watch the anime might not turn out as good).

🟢 Suitable... more>> for those who like adventure/mystery-solving style of plot, stories with a good plot, romance, and a little touch of smut.

🔴 Not suitable for those who want angst and dog blood. Not suitable for those who can't take slow romance. <<less

Founder of Diabolism was the first BL novel I've read and I enjoyed it A LOT. I was reading the manhua at the time and couldn't sit down and wait for new chapters so I instantly came to read the novel. BOY, WHAT A GOOD CHOICE I MADE.

The romance, plot, characters, everything made this story perfect.

World-setting is nothing superb, just normal wuxia stuff, but it was one of my first experiences with this genre aside from another novel which is completely unrelated to danmei. MXTX could still turn the common... more>> aspects of wuxia into something remarkable by enriching the story with many events that indicated turning points in the life of our protagonist, as well as the life of the male lead. Everytime I read some wuxia I feel nostalgic over Mo Dao Zu Shi and remember how marvelous of an experience reading it was.

At first I was a bit uneasy with the sudden flashbacks in the novel. However, it's not hard to get used to them since they aren't misplaced and don't occur every two chapters.

Side characters are topnotch, mainly the cute juniors, who are always really supportive of Wei Wuxian and don't go around believing every crap people say about him.

Even the antagonists deserve some praises.

Spoiler

Except for Wen Chao and his whole gang. Hate them forever

When it comes to romance, Wangji's love for Wei Wuxian is so huge and wholesome that almost made me cry. He was beyond redeeming the moment he first interacted with our protagonist hehehehe (‾́ ◡ ‾́)

It's satisfying to see how their relationship develops and there's no doubt their chemistry is INSANELY GOOD, even though their personalities are complete opposite to each other's. It works so well that even I, who was not exactly a great fan of yaoi, cheered for them madly. Wei Wuxian is funny, shameless and the dense mf we already know. It is really great to have him as the main character. And Lan WangJi is our cold piece of jade, an out-of-this-world beauty and a complete simp for Wei Wuxian.

There is more to their personalities than just this superficial description, of course, but you'll have to need to novel to have a better grasp on how much both of them are truly determined and true to themselves.

After reading it I got obsessed with MXTX's novels; they're all amazing, mainly Heaven Official's Blessing, which is my personal favorite novel of all (MY REGARDS TO HUALIAN).

It was a great experience. Mo Dao Zu Shi is basically the beggining of my obsession over ancient China's long-haired men doting on each other. Once you start reading danmei, it's a path without turn and this novel is a great way to start going down on this road.

Rating: 5/5- this novel got me into BL so it gets an unforgettable rating from me.

Realistically however, this novel is pretty much a solid 4/5. The plot is actually quite messy and I felt many things were not well explained or left unexplained. The narration is also very difficult to follow and I found myself getting quite bored during certain parts, but I dragged myself to the finish line.

Overall I stayed for the characters and my most memorable parts have to be the confession scene and all those weird extras.... more>> The interactions between the leads pretty much make this novel unforgettable.

The thing about MDZS that makes it stand out is how well the characters are written and how realistic, loveable and relatable their personalities are. Each character is consistent and true to themselves and the chemistry is electric. This novel has some of the most amazing romance but also some of the most amazing intrigue and action scenes.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan are simply unforgettable. The book gives them so much life and personality. Their interactions and discoveries and their character growth especially, really stay with you. I think even when the story fell short here and there, it’s really not so noticeable because of how wonderful the MC and ML are.

Lan Zhan is certainly a wonderful seme (after Hua Cheng though- that man is seme of the century!)

I think this is a novel you have to read for BL experience purposes. Read with an open mind and look forward to the characters, it just makes this book so special and captivating overall. <<less

I totally loved this novel. I came from watching the series 'the untamed' and fell in love with the story and its characters. I wanted more of this that's when I discovered the untamed was adapted from a web bl story and I was curious, and now I'm totally whipped for wangxian! Even though the romance is only slowly introduced, the plot keeps you engaged. This is the best chinese web novel I've ever read.

The MCs summed up:
Wei WuXian = 🤡🤣😏
Lan WangJi = 🗿

MDZS is the kind of story that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. One moment you'll be laughing out loud at the MC's shameless actions, the next you'll find yourself crying because he, the person who acts like a clown most of the time, is also the same one who carries so much pain and regret in his heart.

This is a long novel, but trust me you'll breeze through it. There's a reason why this novel is... more>> considered by many as a BL classic.

The main character, Wei WuXian, is the great patriarch, the man, the myth, the legend, and above all, the world's ✨most shameless troll✨. He gets a second chance in life and decides to appear as brainless and shameless as possible so people won't figure out his real identity. It works.

As the story progresses, we get to know his character on a deeper level. He's loyal to a fault, tries his best to uphold justice, sacrifices so much of himself for the people he loves, and yet the world still labels him as a demon. He's not an entirely good person, true, but he does regret his mistakes and ultimately paid for them.

Lan WangJi, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of him. As a wise man once said, "If LWJ had no manners, then manners wouldn't exist in this world." He's perfect from head to toe, excels in everything but passes out after one glass of alcohol, owns a rabbit farm, and is so completely and utterly in love with WWX that I teared up a little bit whenever he would show his love through actions, instead of words.

They may be polar opposites, but they find home in each other. It takes a while for them to finally get there, but the wait is worth it. Good things take time, after all.

Spoiler

That scene in ch. 101 where WWX gets scared because of a dog, hugs LWJ and says, "Lan Zhan!"
LWJ: "I'm here!"
WWX: "Hug me!"
LWJ: "I am hugging you!"
WWX: "Hug me tight!"
LWJ: "I am hugging you tight!"

Istg these two are so perfect for each other😔🤚

[collapse]

The novel switches between past and present quite a lot, which is good to explain each character's back stories, why certain things happened, etc. My only complaint is that sometimes when the plot starts to thicken, the author's like bam! Here's an info dump about this and that. All the excitement I'd felt just went down the drain after that.

Aside from that, I have no other major issue with this novel. All the characters are wonderfully fleshed out and the different plotlines are tied together at the end. I had a blast reading this and I'd like to thank the Exiled Rebel Translations team from the bottom of my heart for translating MDZS into English.

If you're reading other people's reviews right now and contemplating whether to read this story or not: Do it. You won't regret it. Be prepared to lose sleep over it.

Quick rant about Xiao XingChen:
Spoiler

That man was a national treasure yet he ended up being used by a f*cking psychopath. His death absolutely broke my heart. He didn't deserve that shit. I was hoping the author would write more about him in the epilogue, but nope. I just hope that one day his soul returns and he gets a happy ending with his best buddy because he deserves all the good things this world has to offer.

I really love it. My absolute favorite on this side. Not only deep characters and a deep story with lot's of conflict, feelings and moral questions bus also good smut and such a nice pairing. Even if the flashbacks sometimes are tiring they're so important for the story and character progress! I also like, how the MC is riddled with real flaws but still being so likeable. God. I love it! Deserves even more than 5 stars! Not much more to say, read it!

I never thought this novel could leave me a deep impression. I really hope that it wouldn't come to end, because their interactions were harmony and full with understanding. Their interaction either in the present or from the past, truly cute and funny. Give yourself a chance to dive deep in this storyline, you will fine it full with reality without realizing it. This is the second novel that able to make me cry and feel sorrow for the ML which is Lan Zhan and MC which is Wei Ying.

However,... more>> the extra part are gem, and addicting. I can't stop finding Wei Ying so cute! Also the way Lan Zhan put We Ying as his priority really make my heart weak. Lan Zhan is the best ML ever!

AHHHHHHHHHH! This is frustrating! I wish we will have more! QwQ <<less

First of all, I would like to say I really loved this novel, many chinese fans have called it an epic and this is not an exaggeration.....

the author has done a really great job... all of her novels are on a completely different level.... respect man....

this novel is like a detective/mystery novel with xianxia elements with a perfect combination of drama/tragedy and comedy and fluff...

this was the first novel for me where I began to question the nature of things like good and evil... who can decide what is good... more>> or evil.... who is right.... what is important "the greater good" or the little things that make up our life choices.... is any person completely bad...

there are shades of grey in this novel which makes you cry with regret at the same time you wish there was nothing better that could have happened....

all the characters are such complex beings that you never really hate anyone... not even the "villains".... there is always some point in which you equally love and hate the characters...

at first, some might not understand what's happening... but the beautiful way in which the plot unfolds is really worth the wait

CHARACTERS- mc-such a riot...i really liked this unreliable narrator... intelligent, shameless, hilarious, caring and kind beyond most... righteous... villainous...

ml-seems like a cold boring personality but you might never find such a precious treasure again

translation is also so sool... thanks for that... it added to the experience...

again I want to say that it just so GOOD... this is something I will always remember... <<less

This is the first danmei novel I have ever read and I wish I had done it much sooner!

I am not exaggerating when I say I am in love with it and I don't think I can ever get over it. The characters are all lovable (most of them) and there is amazing character development for them. The beautifully constructed plotline really circles back and hits you right in the feels!

I cried quite a few times and laughed a lot of times. The MC is incredibly SHAMELESS and it's freaking... more>> hilarious!! I feel that the tragedy/drama and the comedy in this novel are well balanced, giving a satisfactory feeling when completed.

Spoiler

The thing I don't really like is the fact that they kissed (and without consent at that) and had papapa before confessing anything. It kinda ruined it.

Idk where to start but this novel is so good. I laughed, cried, got angry, and etc. Reading this has been a roller coaster ride of emotions. This was actually my first danmei and the reason why I fell onto the so-called "danmei pit". This is also what made me a MXTX fan lels. Stan MXTX y'all.

Ok onto the review. I love the characters so much. Like I love everyone (even the villains), they're just so likeable and sometimes relatable. Everyone's sort of flawed in a way and I really... more>> liked that. I really don't know how to write reviews but I just wanna recommend this sm I had to write an incoherent review. Just read it. Won't disappoint. <<less

This is the first BL novel that I read and tho novel that made me who I am now..... Bl fan :3

this story have like good details on every plot and they gives the emotions a real like feeling.

after I read this I quickly became obsessed with it. so everywhere I see red and white blueish I sorta cried.... it's too beautiful..

funny tho, the first time I discovered it. it was an anime and I was like what is this, seems intresting, why is there corneto ads. then I realized... more>> months later that it had shounen ai tags and like.. now it's getting more interesting. so I found out it was a novel which lead me to where I am now :3.

I'm also a fan of their drama ' the untamed ' tho I haven't watch those, I still like Wang yibo and Xiao zhan.

anyway it's good tho it's probably too much of like cultivation stuff that some people might get confused. <<less

This was the first danmei novel I ever read, and was the beginning of my long downwards spiral into BL novels. I DEFINITELY recommend this, and I love the authors’s other novels too!!

It doesn’t focus so heavily on the romance, but you end up not minding at all (well, for me) because you’re just so into the story; you can’t wait for certain characters to find out about some HUGE secret, and you anticipate their reaction. More romantic scenes get sprinkled in near the end of the novel, but for... more>> the most part, it focuses more on the past; of what happened to the characters for the present situation to be so crazy. We see how Wangji slowly fell for our Wuxian, and it’s so satisfying!! All in all, I just adore this so much!! <<less

MDZS was my introduction to Chinese novels and specifically, this genre and I'm glad it was because for one, it made me want to learn more about the genre itself and I started reading more and more Xianxia. I loved it so much right from the start that I finished all of it in three days instead of writing my life and death master's thesis... And then, every adaptation of it in the same week. I became obsessed and I'm not even ashamed.

Even though the novel has a lot of... more>> points one can criticize, it is, nevertheless, a great work and I applaud MXTX for the plot, the details, the complex characters and the atmosphere she created. <<less
