The six prefectures of Zhongbo were offered to foreign enemies on a silver platter, and Shen Zechuan was taken into custody in the capital, reduced to a drowning dog* loathed and condemned by all. Xiao Chiye followed the scent of the furor and made his way over. But instead of setting others on him, he kicked Shen Zechuan with his very own leg, rendering the latter an invalid. Who would expect this invalid to turn around and bite him in a counterattack until he was all drenched in blood? That was the start of an epic feud between both men who tore at each other every time they come face-to-face with one another.

“Fate wants to bind me here for life, but this is not the path I choose. The yellow dust submerged my brothers deep under. I have no wish to bow in submission to an illusory fate. The imperial edict can’t save my troops, and the imperial court can’t fill the stomachs of my mounts. I’m no longer willing to lay down my life for this purpose. I want to surmount that mountain. I am going to fight for myself.”

Note : a ‘drowning dog’ is someone who is down and out, having lost favor or power.

QJJ small review after letting it marinate in brain for a few months

One of the best novels I have experienced personally the MC was very complex the ML was a person with goals and feelings too which I loved and their relationship was one of the best I've read the slow trip from hate and disgust to the absolute understanding you are my soul relationship they ended up with just chef kiss 💋 (also they are extremely h:rney for each other which made me laugh)

side characters all had moments... more>> to shine and the antagonists my god they were brilliant some we would get a whole picture of their goals and lives or chapters into their stories and others we would get a peek and it would be just a enough
and man the female characters in this story were just great all of them were actually people and the battle scenes were so good I would get excited or scared just so immersed
And with how this Novel is structured it's such a good reread because you catch hints the author left that you missed.

The politics were also just can't put into words it definitely had me on the edge of my seat quite literally a lot of times

the story takes it's time which I appreciated it was nether slow paced or fast just right definitely will be following this authors other works from now <<less

Characterization is great.

Equilibrium betwn couple is present. Healthy relationships. Story is detailed and plot oriented. Focus is given on every event not just on MC and Ml.

Beginning's confusing as the story starts from the middle of nowhere. Readers r directly thrusted into the ongoing plot with no whatsoever clue as to what is happening who is MC and just how the things are progressing.

... more>> Heavily focused on politics and war. The detailing of climaxes were severly lacking. The scenes which should be detailed were just implicitly written.

Relationship just forms right off the bat and couple development and intensity was lacking. At some point things just start dragging on.

According to me it's average. <<less

I dropped this story before I finished chapter 102. One of my problem why I can't stand reading it is because Chiye's calling Zechuan "wife". This is my pet peeves when reading bl / gl, one of them were being called as wife or husband. I hope the author knows they're writing a gay couple and not a hetero. If some doesn't care about it, but not for me. I dislike how cezhou was like some stereotypical mlm couples out there, the reason why I read danmei was bcs I... more>> can't handle the stereotypes in bl manhwa.

And also, the story is plotty, I have no idea what does Zechuan wanted to do. The story has a lot of characters, too. I'm so confused who's who because they're connected to e/o but thank god it has a character guides.

The thing I like about qjj is that it has a great plot, though it's plotty for me, but I'm still interested with it. I'm also getting attached to Cezhou, but I really can't stand the wife thing of Chiye. I know this will continue in the future so idk if should I pick it or not. And also, there's a wlw couple here so I'm really looking forward to read it before.

I want to read the author's other story, I think it's called nan chan? But I'm kinda worried if the ML is also like this to the other MC, too. I heard the dynamics are like Cezhou too. <<less

OMG!!!! I cannot gush enough about this book.

I am leaving a review mid-way during the reading of my book for the first time because I couldn't contain myself. I will definitely add to the review once I complete.

First and Foremost, Qiang Jin jiu has everything I look for in a novel. However, be warned I can understand this book is not for everyone. Most people will enjoy, some people will absolutely love it and quite a few will not like it at all.

Yet I would say it... more>> is still worth a read.

Power Couple, Flawed Main Characters, Beautiful Sibling/Father-son Bonds, Elaborate Political plot, Fleshed out Enemy characters, Detailed side characters.

The beauty of this novel for me is that there has been some thought put into even the smallest interaction for each and every character in the novel. The author has put a concentrated effort into telling us not just a course of events with the main characters leading the show. Rather she has woven a story of many people and many lives all intertwined together by their actions, their passions, their motivations, their loyalties, their ideologies and beliefs, their greed, their envy, their hatred, their love.

The Main Characters, Shen Zechuan and Xiao Chiye are flawed. They are not a Mary/Gary Sue by any definition of the word. But while reading you come to understand them, their actions and the people around them. They are powerful, yet they lose too and have lost badly. What I like is that they are not invincible or completely OP.

This might be the first time that other than the main characters, I ended up loving so many side character

The plot, the twists and turns of this story literally got me to edge of my seat, they were so thrilling and I am only mid-way through.

Update:

I finished it. It has become my FAVOURITE Danmei novel of all time and I don't say this arrogantly but I have read almost all the cream of the crop danmeis. If you want to read better reviews, all you have to do is scroll through this website, some amazing reviews to read on qjj. But you know the best thing would be to just go and read this actual masterpiece of a novel.

I won't say more, just even months later

"lanzhou ah, where is lanzhou?"

"here...I'm here"

Makes me feel things. CenZhou is beautiful! <<less

the romance part is incredible, the relationship between the MC and the ML is very good, it's all consensual and they support themselves in their goals without diminishing and imposing themselves on the other and I thought that was amazing. Now the story, it's good, but many times I found myself lost in the story, well I don't know Mandarin and there were times when the author threw many names in Mandarin and I found myself lost trying to remember where the names were, anyway it was ok It's hard... more>> to understand (I'm not used to reading political intrigue novels, the only one I read besides this was sha po lang) . I was a little disappointed because at times it felt like the protagonists just needed to point the finger for something to happen, especially towards the end. I think it's worth reading the novel is sensational and it's also worth remembering that it contains very heavy scenes:

Spoiler

MC literally skinned a person and left him alive.

apart from that there is also animal cruelty, pe*ophilia, mentions of r*pe and several other things. <<less

I will write my opinion as spoiler because I'm sure some of you wont like to read negative opinions Not that I didn't like the novel it's one of my fev but have some objection
Spoiler

This novel one of the best novel I ever read until CeZhou separated many event many stories, The writer didn't focus on the main couple and their story after they separate many chapters not even a letter between them
some of the event seem meaningless to me just to make the novel longer I finished the first 140 chapters in 3 days now not even read 5 chapter in day because nothing encourage me to keep reading
I don't say it not worth reading It's really amazing story as long as CeZhou together so hope they meet again soon because I miss them together so much

DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!!! (5/5)

This is heavy on political schemes and war. It says this is enemies become lovers, and here, enemies means bone deep grudge holding ones, who try to tear apart each other's throat, but later begin to have a better understanding and become each other's strength. If you're craving for some intimacy, don't worry, you won't be disappointed. This is a well balanced novel!!! (According to my taste, of course)

MC's cold demeanor, WOW!!! He never failed to surprise me. He's a super genius and... more>> when he kills, a ruthless killer!!!
ML- the wolf pup who loves freedom, SO strong, SO tall and smart!!!
Both MC and ML are super handsome!!!

Plz bare until at least chapter 10, 15 cause, at first you might not find anything special about this one, but I promise you, later you won't be able to stop!!! This one totally crushed my favourite list and now, is among top 3!!!

I must thank the author for writing this masterpiece, because the novel is like a poem!!! Translators are doing a great job here, every chapter is a gem. Totally fell in love with QJJ!!! <<less

Okay, soo.. I've read it two times so far. During the first time, I had no idea what's going on and just rushed through only stopping for a while on the CP scenes. But I've missed so much.

In the second read, I paid a lot of attention to the names, cases, cities, and everything and it was literally so worth it. The politics are really well written, but to enjoy it you have to pay attention to the plot first and well... have some interest in this topic. Also omg...... more>> the descriptions are so nice. Especially the nature ones.

As for the CP- I really liked them both. Their interactions are so funny and satisfying. I really liked how amongst the power struggles happening around them, you could still see that they are both still young. Their relationship might seem a lil toxic to some people at first but I honestly loved it especially after they both finally realized they're in love and supported each other.

Oh, also, the translation is honestly perfect and is progressing so fast.

I'm not even halfway through and I'm waiting for the translation to be completed, but I just wanted to say that it's really worth reading :) <<less

Amazing!! I have been waiting for a story like this. Why is this novel not more famous?

Favourite BL novel so far. Imperial China, political intrigue, military themes, multifaceted characters and BL romance!

Plot, plot, and more plot. Never a boring moment. Seamless transition from plot to plot. Unpredictable.

Intelligent, strong, cunning and very grey main characters. Very much a power couple.

Good writing and excellent translations.

I love this story so so so much.

The plot, the conflicts, the schemes, it's all a complex thing driven by the greed and interests of multiple groups that affect each other in unpredictable ways. It feels so real, the chaos and unpredictability, the way things rapidly spiral out of control, both for the main characters, the side characters, and the antagonists.

And the characters all feel 3D, multifaceted, unique, and distinct from each other. I love that most of them have internal struggles to deal with. And also, the main characters,... more>> especially, make me think of the saying "one man's hero is another man's traitor." <<less

My all-time favourite danmei.

Every time I pick this up to read, it draws me into a fantastic world of mysteries, love, revenge, scheming, plotting and so much more. It has been a few months since I finished this, but still, it is not over me :) I would randomly pick some chapters to let myself escape into the world of Lanzhou or Ce an.

Rating - all the stars in the sky 🌃😉

This is a great novel. But. It’s VERY plotty. It took me two days just to get through the first twenty or so chapters because you’re thrust into the story with no build up, just boom here are 50 different characters living their lives and plotting against each other, enjoy!

So that threw me off at first, but if you stick through it, it really gets very interesting. And the main couple made it worth it also, definitely in my top five best bl couples. So devoted to each other, I... more>> love them !!

HOWEVER, the reason for my four stars (which should be 3.5 really) is that after a certain point in the story, there’s just too much happening. It gets a little suffocating when things seem to be going right and plot points seem to be concluding... only to look at the chapter count and realize you’re not even halfway through. Personally, I think around chapter 120 things started to drag on and on and even though I want to keep reading for the main couple, it’s just really mentally exhausting.

So, in conclusion. This is a good novel, it has great characters and an amazing main couple BUT it can get to be too plotty and heavy. If you can push though the mental gymnastics this novel will make you do, then congrats but it’s just too long for me:d <<less

Not gonna lie but QJJ will be always one of my top danmei novel all the times. Even its full with political conflict, a bit heavy (and sometime I’d get loss and gotta read twice to understand), but it was so good and I got no further complaints.

Out of danmei couple that I’ve came across, I think Cezhou shows me what is the real meaning of love. I love the way they keep showing how they always thinking and their feeling about one another. Guess the translators did a really... more>> good job in order to potray who is Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan.

And my heart will always be with you, Yao Wenyu. Just like Qiao Tianya T.T

This novel was a whirlwind of emotional ups and downs.

Honestly, I was skeptical cause I just so happened to read a review comparing this novel and Nan Chan and saying they were basically the same. And now that I've finally completed this novel, I am completely confused on where they are the same.

Nan Chan Follows the 8 sufferings of the world and goes through the mystery of the MC's missing memories and the little fish he kept.

Spoiler

Meanwhile, this novel follows the MC who's branded as a traitor thanks to his traitorous father and no fault of his own. It goes through the heartache of losing those closest to the MC while also showing how much more he manages to gain on his way. The ML is possessive but not even in the same vein as most Dominant ML's are.

[collapse]

If anything, this novel reminds me of "Back to the Beginning of Ming to do Charity." The similarities in these 2 novels are mostly held in the fact that
Spoiler

the plot is palace intrigue and the MC overthrows the emperor. Also that the woman characters are sick as f*ck and badass.

I appreciated that the relationship was prevalent in this unlike it was in the one mentioned earlier. But at the same time, while the relationship was there and very much prevalent, the author did a great job at balancing the romance and the plot. It was totally plot heavy, but the romance also didn't topple the plot and turn it into mush. I appreciate that balance.

If I had to point out one place that bothered me, then maybe it would be the disappearing act of some of the characters. I'm glad that they do end up coming back up randomly throughout, but Characters like Jai Gang just go from very much relevant to invisible background character. I get that certain ones are just plot devices, but still, I get attached.

Also?? Didn't Taitan Hu have kids? Like what happen to that whole thing? Am I trippin or was that completely tossed away once it served its purpose of making him pitiful? Like initially, he was this straightforward, stubborn blockhead with kids he picked up from Zhongbo. Then, the kids disappeared and suddenly he was more hothead and rash. It complete flipped. That or maybe it was a whole other character? Anyway, this novel was great and although I did have difficulties with the site, the translation was top tier and made me completely okay with it.

Top rated. Totally recommend. <<less

I completely LOVE this novel. Yes, it's very heave political, and that may confuse some people but I think it's really fun to read, and totally worth it.

Shen Zechuan is the type of character that I ADORE, so I love him so much. He's so so smart. And it's so fun to read his interaction with xiao chiye.

I recommend this novel 100%

What a ride. This book has shades of Sha Po Lang and Clear and Muddy Loss of Love. It is REALLY heavy on the politics. There's three parts - first part is set in the capital, second part is in Zhongbo, third part kind of spans both.

I really loved the first arc, kind of liked the second, and wasn't really a fan of the third. The thing I love most about this novel is the arcs of the two protagonists, Shen Zechuan and Xiao Chiye. They had really beautiful arcs - Shen Zechuan's PTSD, anguish, and trauma and the beautiful symbolism and meaning behind his name, and Xiao Chiye's restlessness and pain in being trapped as a glorified hostage in the capital, his growth as a person and as a member of the Libei family and army.

This author is really really great at writing angst and the responses and growth of the characters when they face setbacks, suffering and loss. First two parts had a lot of this, and there were some really unforgettable scenes and quotes. The moments of vulnerability and intimacy between the two leads was so perfect 😭 And I still remember that poem and the explanation behind Shen Zechuan's name 😭

The third part was full of heavy politicking, with multiple side plots being dealt with. The novel no longer felt like an intense character study of the two main characters, but now focused on this huuuge ensemble cast. I started skimming POVs and chapters. I even got a bit bored of the main couple by the end because their interactions became fairly predictable? As compared to the growth, tenderness and depth that was being explored, built and developed in the first and second parts.

I really struggled to keep up with the huge cast of characters, their histories, motivations and political leanings by the third part. I didn't really feel invested when the author included a poignant moment about the side characters, because there were just so many of them. The chapters also ended abruptly and scene transitions often seemed to be missing in the Chinese edition I read, so it was kind of abrupt and jerky sometimes.

That said, I loved the female characters to bits!!! It's so rare to see complex, competent and likeable female characters in danmei, especially women who have relationships with each other. It's almost a given that danmei fiction is misogynistic; if the women aren't unlikeable and despicable, then there usually is only one (1) likeable female character. I also feel like the author was implying the Qi Zhuyin/Hua Xiangyi relationship?? I love the female characters so much and wish there was a whole novella about them.

As usual, in ancient China political novels, Chinese imperialism is very much part of the foundation of the novel. I also found it a little disappointing that Shen Zechuan became the Emperor... This didn't seem to be where his arc (his name) was leading. Not to mention it's hard to believe that things would really change and there would be less cruelty and corruption, when the author spent most of the novel showing that the system is the problem.

My first review ever.

1st, would like to give my thanks to translator for the great translation. Without you I think the beauty of this story won't be conveyed at all.

This story have a heavy plot with war, conspiracies, political intrigue as background.

... more>> The relationship between MC & ML also deep & intriguing. The intimate scene between them also written beautifully. I'm in love with both of them equally <3.

I have read many stories (danmei) before I start to read Qiang Jin Jiu, for me this story have its own style. Can't be compared with the others for sure and it's on my no.1 favourite danmei even though I haven't finished it yet.

And I also agreed with a review that said this story is a masterpiece. I feel I will never can get enough give a praise for this story. Love it so much <3 I wish I can read Chinese so I can read the original text (laughs). <<less
