The Legendary Rebuilding of a World by a Realist Demon King

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

In a rotted away castle, Ashta awoke as a Demon King.

With his ‘wisdom from a past life’, he would rule over his lands as a thorough ‘realist’.

“Demon King, why are you attacking the level 1 Heroes?”

“Defeat them before they become stronger. That is called strategy.”

“Demon King, why are you sending fake money to the enemy country?”

“To bring chaos to their economy so they will self-destruct.”

“The werewolf troops have attacked. Should we use silver bullets?”

“Not bullets, shoot them with canons.”

And like that, Ashta ‘reformed’ the old tendencies.

He became a lord who was loved by the people and his subordinates and would go on to be called the most powerful Demon King in history.

I wouldn't usually give a rating, especially not such a low one, so early in but at this point I think I've seen enough.

The guy keeps coming up with "innovative strategies" that any rpg noob with half a brain can come up with and recieves cringingly overwhelming praise for it every time. You mean to tell me that of all the 71 other demon kings that have been existing before this guy that not one of them have thought of killing off any of the 72 heroes before they grow... more>> up and gain power? And why in God's name would every Demon king be tasked with keeping in their castle a weapon that the hero specifically can use to gain a huge advantage against them? Probably so the MC can come up with the BRILLIANT idea of getting rid of it beforehand, you know, cuz unlike all the other "s*upid" demon kings he's a realist and he has no problem reminding us of that at least twice every chapter.

Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if the dunge-*ahem*, Demon king castle system at least was somewhat interesting, however to summon monsters all he does is literally throw ingredients into an actual pot and something pops out, also apparently using the same ingredients doesn't give the same monster. This is literally a gacha that's been unsuccessfully reskinned.

Pretty sure it won't be long before this novel flops into a burning pile of MC being glorified by all his companions for coming up with subpar and overused ideas. <<less

Like reading a manga... without any pictures.

Chapters are short, descriptions are minimal to non existent. There is practically no world building. Battles are lackluster and done in one or two sentences, and most of the written content are meaningless generic dialogues between the characters.

Aside from the dialogue almost everything else is 'tell but don't show'.

... more>> This feels void, empty and lackluster. A summary of an idea that could be good if developed properly, but useless as it is right now.

If you like the premise read the manga instead, since it attenuates these problems. <<less

Shallow. The protagonist is supposedly a genius character, but the author isn't clever enough to write one. It's just constant ego m*sturbation over simple strategies.

Welp, here we go, STYLE REVIEW! with your friend HentMas!!!.

First things first... he's a realist, you know, a realist, the most realist of realist there was, is or ever will be, have I mentioned how much realist he is?? because, you know, a realist he is... get ready for the first few chapters to get hammered with this simple fact.

the author loves his historical references, he injects everything with memories of past generals and such, the way he views things is biased against American nations, and he haves a hard... more>> on for european/asian countries, not saying this is "bad" just pointing it out because the tone of the novel is exactly that, a knowledgeable person that does everything needed to win, thinking several steps ahead with historical similes to account for his actions, I wouldn't make this comment if he hadn't specifically mentioned disliking America in the novel by the way, there are means of portraying things without dissing an entire country... did I mention he's a realist?

That being said, the style of writing leaves a lot to be desired, there is like 3/4 dialog and the rest miscellaneous details that don't help to convey what is happening, where or how, the jumps in sequences are... weird and you're left wondering when he got that particular "thing", because the author super focuses on advancing the plot without any leeway on exploration or world building, this leaves the whole scene up yo your imagination but when he does come with an important detail you have to rewrite the world you've being building to try and understand things more, which feels jarring and breaks you out of the world, a lot of things are left unexplained "well... so... he lived in a cave and now he's got a castle... what?", oh and he's a realist, I think I haven't mentioned that.

As for the characters... they are well written with set personalities, there is no character growth as far as I've read on any of them, but since you're still getting used to their existence and their particulars so far it's not a problem, well, maybe for the characters introduced at the start, but since new characters are being introduced regularly it doesn't stagnate although you kind of miss the other characters you've gotten to know before, they just have some conversations and that's it, no one really does much besides the battles, although it's weird that he focuses on scenes with the "harem members" when this work is clearly focused in neither romance nor s*x... it's just your flirty banter while MC is plotting something or other and the feeling of "love" is completely out of the picture because it's just too forced... OH! right, the MC is a realist!!! I forgot!

Since there is no character growth, the world building is left mostly to your imagination, and the character interactions are... boring, you would think the action scenes would be outstanding since the author loves to focus on them so much, but nope, not at all, it's your run of the mill "I can hold on to a conversation with everyone while swinging my sword", the whole scenes focus a lot on how they are "doing this thing" for an extended period of time until his "trap" activates... which so far has being repetitive and boring, I do wonder if the current act will be interesting but since it's all being worked "behind the scenes" the author is focusing on character interactions, which are again, unrealistic and boring because you know nothing is going to happen because MC is As*xual and emasculated from the start... at least so far, and he has never even showed any kind of romantic feelings towards the female characters (not even platonic).... pssst... realiiiiist...

The pacing is all over the place, the dialog is kind of interesting when he touches some historical fact or other, but besides that, it's repetitive and dull, the author loves to repeat things over and over (realist) and over again, to the point where I want to yell at him "I GOT IT GOD DAMMIT!"...

Those are all the notes I have o this work... hope you found this review helpful!

Started reading the manga and thought I was reading a slightly changed version of Dungeon Defense, but after a while I realised that it was just a failure of a ripoff of it.

It said he was realistic but, rather, everyone else was s*upid in this, as opposed to the original's protagonist, Dantalian who is literally fighting against everyone and only has himself and his own wit to rely on (and some knowledge of future events).

I read the manga and was very disappointed since its just a ripoff off dungeon defence... more>> down to very many small details, like being the weakest of that many demon lords, getting a demon maid, being a "realist" except that the ripoff failed.

Because Dantalian is smart without everyone else being s*upid, doesn't rely on getting his hands on good and reliable subordinates for no reason and doesn't have any real personal fighting power. No I didn't read the novel and won't bother to since I know I'll be disappointed. Go read Dungeon Defense instead. It's great. Though it did get dropped, so don't, if you dislike that. <<less

The backstory for the MC is that he has no solid knowledge of the past, and came from a world that isn't Earth. Then suddenly the MC remembered he used to research Japan so now here is a bunch of knowledge obtained from Japanese games and earth's history. The author wanted to fool us that this would not be the generic isekai. Instead of pretending the MC was born and raised in not-Japan, just say he was a former Japanese person as it'd be more believable, given the amount of... more>> knowledge he knows about Japan.

This story is shaping up to be your generic copy paste. Japanese MC who is meek against women. Maid. Gachas. OP levels of luck. We'll see what happens as the translation continues but it seems like a knock off of "How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom", except the author is trying to have this MC be everything the opposite of Realist Hero's MC (demon, being deceptive and cruel, physically strong, win without uniting nations, annihilating the enemy, etc.). I say knock off because this WN came out in 2018 and Realist Hero came out in 2014. <<less

Shallow, empty, hero is NOT a realist and both MC and author can't use card of him acting smart... They even can't use overused 'smart' moves properly.

In details. First of all, 'rebuilding' and 'realist' tropes require nice world building to work. You need a lot of knowledge about world system to give proper feeling of changing aka 'rebuilding' something. This story lucks world building even on the most basic way. MC just randomly remembers some common game trope about DK, gets praised for this knowledge and then spawn some idea... more>> about it to get more praise for it being 'revolutional'.

Second point, MC is s*upid. It has nothing to do with him using overused ideas from our world or overused quotes of Sun Tzu. But about him acting without thinking. He hatch a plan to get resources from his neighbour... to get praised for his plan and then getting kindly suggested 'may be we need to send spies too?' You know, Middle Ages or not, but you think about sending spies before you start making plans. 'Know yourself and your enemy...' you have quoted it just several pages before! Also, if there is nothing pressing, you usually start from 'knowing yourself' aka learning about things you have and can do and why something is as it is. Only then you act. Our MC hasn't bothered. If his maid said they are low on resources, then it is so.

Third point, gacha and minions. Well, for me, it was a point where MC proved he is simply a fanboy of 'realists', but isn't one. No self-respected realist would use some probably rare and expensive Yggdrasil leaves for something with unexpected and random outcome. He will sell (or use) them and hire others old-fashioned way. Also, realist needs ppl who have skills he doesn't, but outthinking everyone around is useless and anyone even slightly smart will know having someone praising them constantly is bad. Your subordinates need to have some opinions and question your actions to some extent to be useful. Actually, his maid clearly shows MC is missing the point between having walking Wikipedia in a maid outfit, actually reading it and having real knowledge, based not only on books.

I hoped it'd get better, but...
Spoiler

here is up to chapter 7. Hero came up with genius ideas:

  • Kill Heroes while they are kids. Are you sure noone tried? Heroes tend to have plot armour, can't be found before they come into power, and... let me point on the Boy-Who-Lives. Those books had question in it: was he born a hero or unsuccessful attack of the Evil One made him into the one.
  • Destroy that item which can kill our MC, but is kept in his castle.... well, again, have you really thought it through? Such items tend to be indestructible in the most games, so putting it into volcano means someone will be able to get it from it with some magic... or divine help. Or they can be core of your power, not an empty symbol of it, but MC decided to not even listen to its description before commanding.
  • Use his weakness as a way to provoke two states around him to fight each other.... skipping all those arguments about how wrong it could have gone (there are too much if them), MC has zero info about neighbour relations and... it comes in question why neither side demanded him to add his army to theirs. Even if as a token force they should have done it.
[collapse]

Dropped it. I really wished I'd be able to read all 100+ chapters as an idea sounded fun on paper, but... it's just constant praising MC for every word he speaks with nothing behind it <<less

It's not particularly bad, but quite shallow. Few things are explained properly, characters are not that developed and personalities are not great either. We already fell into common harem tropes. In addition, the "realism" is pathetic tbh. The things that are making out to be smart are not that smart in reality, but more of a common sense and anyone can come up with them. Overall it feels cartoonish and underdeveloped. The concept is good, so there is a faint hope that the author might get better over time.

Another tr*sh written by an amateur.

The MC constantly reminds us that "he's a realist" as if it wasn't clear enough (and yes, he's not a realist at all lmao). It seems like the author is a fan of the "tell, don't show" style, which speaks of his writing ability.

Conversations are flat, the characters don't have personalities at all, and the MC feels more like a manifestation of inner thoughts rather than an actual living being.

Anyways, what I can say is that author tries too hard to make the MC come... more>> off as an intellectual "realist", but falls way off. <<less

I thought I had experienced all the forms of bad writing out there, from grammar so bad it is almost as hard to read as machine translated Chinese novels, all the way to a “smart” MC that walks around in the open with a harem of celestial beauties in a Wuxia novel, wile trying not to catch the attention of any young masters. But it seems I was wrong.

Spoiler

So far the MC is in the middle of planning world domination and we know almost nothing about the world. It could be bronze age to steam age. MC's cave could be 15 km from a kingdoms capital city that has an army that can kill him as a after thought, and yet the MC is setting up plans to attack a demon lord. It mentions the MC having a castle town but for all we know there could be any were from 0 to 1, 000, 000 people living there.

Over all I'm very disappointed in the lack of details. <<less

I like how the story progresses, and the idea of incorporating famous figures in this novel is interesting, but that served as a double edged sword.

The writing and the pace aren't bad (imo), but I can see why some if not most reviewers aren't satisfied with it. I'm not much of a gamer myself but I can tell that the battle tactics are somewhat easy to guess and lack the element of surprise (for the readers). That said, due to the era the story is based, I can go with... more>> that.

This story has potential, and one of those are [the gathering of famous figures throughout history.] But that potential as I said earlier became a flop, or on its way to at least. The famous figures summoned happen to be Japanese for some reason (excluding Jeanne D'arc, who was 'coincidentally' summoned by the goddess into that world. And she's the only summoned historic figure who came from outside Japan so far.) Not only that, he loves to add Chinese figures too in the Maou's monologue/narration, but there's not a single Chinese hero summoned.

Don't get me started on how the author glorifies the Eastern figures, hinting favoritism towards them evident even in the Maou's monologue. I mean, huh? Sure, I don't know much about Japanese or Chinese historical figures since I'm not a native from the respective places, but I can tell how much the author 'admires' these figures, or being lazy for not researching enough. I mean, you can talk abt how great Eastern tacticians are or hustorical figures in general, but the West (Europeans), Middle East, Russia (North), and South/South East/South West have great figures as well. Heck huge scale wars (Hole Crusade War, French vs Russia etc) often happen on those continents as well so why not add/quote them?

All in all, the novel's a good read, but either the author has other plans to include or just lacks the intent to do research, it'll may turn bland as it progresses. <<less

Yes, chapters are short but they aren't filled with unnecessary stuff, just the most important aspects of the story, no dragging one conversation across 10 chapters.

If course I would like longer chapters or more updates, not just because they are short but because I like reading this...

Someone might complain that the MC isn't a genius but nowhere is stated that he is, it's just that the enemies are just following the same steps, without thinking about anything crytically

It's okay, not great, but okay.

As others have said, the chapters are a bit short and the fights aren't really high in tension, but it's nice.

The biggest critique I have is definitely the "great nippon steal" and similar.

Casual Machiavellian know it all, with a smart loyal maid..... there may be some wish fulfillment self projection on the part of the author.

Chapters are extremely short so it’s a slow take off, but TL is pretty smooth. As other review has said, maybe let some backlog build up to you can keep a flow going.

A manga without pictures.

Biggest flaw is that writing is inadequate in defining the scenes.

Mc's actions become less realist more like someone who just wants to flex like some historical figures.

... more>> Instead of creating more adventures or something genuine, it more about glorifying japanese culture (for eg. With mayonnaise)

For a demon king, his power is tr*sh tier. (Even fighting a small group of low tier beings like goblins and kobolts was overexhausting.)

Author just changes MC peronality as he likes.

Over glorification of historical figures. I know author must be a history major but we dont read isekai for japanese and chinese history lessons.

He talks all about economy but then leaves it to maid to handle (because author cant justify his tr*sh decision on his 'realism' theme so just lowkey hid plothole like that)

He just leaves his core defenseless out of trust (as he says). But problem is that at that point half of his crew had questionable loyalty to him. Way to go realist guy. SO MUCH REALISM.. XD

Conclusion instead of realism and stratergy, he just relies on luck and plot armor. <<less

note: if you want a story which has minimalist writing and jarring flaws in a story about the power of "realism" look no further.

The premise is very promising and shows where it could've shined if it wasn't for two things

1.) Reincarnation/ transmigration

... more>> 2.) Ideology choice

With reincarnation stories, they are typically caught in a difficult balancing act between pacing and exposition which eventually cripples the story's ability to entice the reader to continue reading. What this story suffers from is the lack of "realism" in the story, the main character is somehow in the favor if god, a battle manic's blood lust (never use a thirst for random blood as a motive unless the character is insane), and finally quite literally walking exposition.

What I mean by ideology choice is the conflicted nature of the story that switches between dark, very well constructed scenes and fluffy, unnatural exposition scenes that overall make the pacing somewhat erratic. Making it difficult for the author to convey the story / world he wanted to show.

Despite these flaws I mentioned, the author had a very good idea of the world that he wanted to create and the ideas are quite good. If the story was remade with a more careful approach to these issues then this story would become quite good. <<less

This really remind me with "The realist hero rebuild the kingdom".

But in lite version...

The story is straight to the point, no unecessary story.

But I remember... this is a web novel, written by author who seeks ideas and feedback from internet.

And giving it around 30 chapters, I believe the plot density will increase.

And I always appreciate small chapter to let out some steam out of my head.

I rarely write reviews but just had to for this novel. Usually when a novel is just bad I skip it and move on, but this one is one isn't bad per se its just a big case of unused potential due to the writing style, the premise, and storyline are actually solid (tho the overuse of the term realist gets kinda annoying but that's more of a minor gripe of mine than an actual problem), but the problem lies with a very tell don't show writing style, coupled with... more>> an insufficient amount of details in most cases. We just get told that the MC is doing something, but we rarely ever see it or hear any details regarding it, for example we know he has a town, but we don't know almost anything about it, no idea how many citizens it has, how it looks it, its size, nothing, we know that the population consists of humans demi humans and demons, but no idea about the social order, about how they interact.
Spoiler

At one point he gets new citizens from a town of a rival demon lord he killed, we are just told that they joined the city and that's it.

Promising premise, terrible execution.

I'm a realist. Get ready to hear that line over and over, because the author won't let you forget that the MC is a realist. If you took a shot every time the MC says he's a realist, you'll probably be dead within 20 chapters.

Let's do X. It's because I'm a realist. Let's do Y. It's because I'm a realist. Let's do Z. It's because I'm a realist.

However the story has a much bigger problem, and it's that the MC's 'realist' ideas are only good because literally... more>> everyone else is an idiot. His good ideas so far:

Let's personally kill the hero before he has a chance to level up. This is probably his best idea so far, and should work unless the hero's plot armor kicks in. Still I can see it working, but like I said I think this is his 'best' idea, so let's take a look at his other ideas.

All demon kings have a weapon that is secretly effective against them hidden in the castle. Instead of hiding it in the castle, let's toss it into a volcano. So you're telling me no other demon king noticed this? Yes, this is a good idea but it's not because you're a realist, it's because apparently all the other demon kings are idiots.

His first plan (first ten chapters), let's swear loyalty to two different factions and have them fight it out. Also while they're fighting it out, let's raid one of their bases. The idea itself is good, but the execution is terrible. What happens is:

    1. Spread rumours that the new Demon King is a coward.
    1. Faction A sends an envoy, demanding tribute. Agree but say Faction B is threatening him with their army.
    1. Faction B sends an envoy, demanding tribute. Agree but say Faction A is threatening him and if Faction B could show their might it would be great.
    1. Faction A and B end up fighting one another.
    1. Profit???
Neither Faction A or B, have any guarantees of his loyalty. They don't do any real investigation. This entire thing literally happens in like 3 chapters. How this could work is if there was more build up/preparation. If Faction A or B had guarantees but the MC worked around them. There are a bunch of ways to make this plot less dumb.

This entire novel feels less like a smart MC manipulating his enemies, and more like a dumb MC hitting down on the mentally challenged.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Except, this one-eyed man has an eye injury and can only see blurs. <<less
