Hi, Translator here! I started translating this for my own enjoyment because I like entertainment industry novels, BL, and the author Butterfly's Shadow Beneath the Moon. She's the same author who wrote "Ascending, Do Not Disturb", and "Very Happy" as well as many others. This is an older novel by the author, from 2015, and admittedly not as good as her later works but still good.

In the author's own words this is a novel with a Sue-type lead. Read it if you're looking for a fun, light-hearted story with face... more>> slapping and sweet slow romance. If you're looking for a novel where the characters have lots of struggles, this isn't it. It's mostly how our super talented reincarnated MC gets the better of people who try to scheme against him as he climbs the ranks of the entertainment industry. I also love his interactions with his ultra loving, and ultra spoiling, nouveau-riche tycoon parents.

Our ML is a cold-on-the-outside, intimidating-to-others young and powerful company President. But he is super sweet towards the MC and always supporting him. I love their sweet interactions. <<less

It's a very heartwarming showbiz romance novel.

One of my favourite aspects of this author works is that when the MC's family is good, they are really grounded and warm. Oftentimes, showbiz novel has MC with bad family environment (cue Idol and The Crown, it was good but really heartwretching), so this novel being as it is, is a clear stream among the many.

There's no need to comment the romance of MC and ML. It's one of the best dog food out there, lol.

I've read this novel a few years ago,... more>> so I'm really happy that someone finally picked up this novel to translate.

Also recommend the author other showbiz novel, Very Happy. It's a good read as well. <<less

This is a very feel-good warm tender-feeling inducing novel. The romance between the MLs and MCs is sweet and the MC’s family dynamic is so ideal. MC in the acting circle is not perfect (though he is close to it), so it’s better than nothing.

But I did have a few problems with the way the entertainment setting was delivered. I felt it could have been more detailed and impactful. The MC typically recited a few lines and got the role. Then the director would praise him up to the skies... more>> and how the MC embodied the character he envisioned.

There was really no... acting that made me go wow. That made you feel the MC was actually meant to be a film emperor. Because of this fault, it made the story—situated in the entertainment genre—feel less complete. It’s a good story, but not great or addicting. So I’ll give it three-stars. <<less

Probably not the best slice of life nor best entertainment novel but this one has one of the best protagonist. I like the three views of MC. Although, the MC is OP, he still knows when to bend and to stretch. He also has a bottom line.

The downside for me is the ending, I feel that that the story is hurriedly finished. Though there are extra chapters, they are not enough and not as good as ch1-80. Also, the ML easily falls for MC. Time dilutes one's feeling especially the... more>> MC and ML only met once (MC's cutting classes). The ML didn't really bother when he saw MC at first after few yrs... Then the novel suddenly has the ML pursued MC after without any scenario that made his feelings deepen. <<less

Extremely disappointing.

Let me give you the bullet points:

  • OP MC/ML
  • There was romance?
  • Xenophobia and racism galore
  • Repeat, repeat, repeat... learning how to brainwash
So MC is basically omnipotent. There is nothing he is not super perfect in. Acting, singing, calligraphy, painting, being loved by everyone, talking, walking, bla bla bla... it reached a point where I wouldn't even blink if MC pooped rainbows, became the emperor of earth and everyone lies down to his feet. There were no ups and downs, only up to up to up. Was ok the first 20 chapters... more>> but became super boring. Especially since the writer changed to narration mode at around chapter 60. Yes you get 40 chapters of narration how op MC is.

The couple and romance.... there was romance? ML is a passerby. He gets even less screen time than almost every side character! He just pops up here and there and is in love with MC. Their getting together was more like MC taking him in out off pity. I swear the only "romantic" moment was when MC was filming somewhere in the boonies and ML came over to deliver food to the crew. The falling in love seems to be part of one of the countless time skips that get shortly narrated down.

Xenophobia and racism...i feel like everyone that made it through chapter 76 should get an award of honor. At the beginning of this novel it won't be obvious but when MC went to another country the first time you might start to feel uncomfortable. "Flower country" (aka China) is best and everyone else sucks. Their culture is sooo deep and everyone goes down and goes crazy for them.

The second time is the above mentioned chapter 76 and those around it...i don't even know how to explain. The arc is basically that MCs movie is shortlisted for awards and he goes overseas to attend. It starts out with a never ending ramble how the western discriminates against Chinese, that the poor Chinese never get awarded only because their movie culture is a bit lagging behind and made poorly. Ehm the writer themselves writes that their movie are poorly made but wants to have awards for them. The f*ck? And then it gets worse and worse.... the only eatable food in the world is chinese food, westerners stink (literally), they only want to take advantage of chinese people because they are such a big market and westerners are so envious because of all the rich tycoons in China... yes I was like " who are the top 3 richest people in the world"? Uhm number 3 is Asian but from India so its the next Asian on the list.

So the writer kind of inserted hate speach under disguise... calling them "friends" but with a lot of allegations. This made me extremely uncomfortable and s**ked away the last goodwill with this novel that got increasingly boring.

This also is part of the repeat and brainwash thing.... the writer seems to keep harping on the same phrases again and again "bringing glory to the country" and repeating the MCs glory again and again.

Would I recommend this novel? Well.... I read other novels of this writer and liked them a lot but this one you do not too read. If you have ever read an entertainment circle novel then you will not find here anything new or surprising. I was hoping for a nice lovestory but even that is a no go here.

So spare your time, you will not miss out when not reading this. <<less

I have it a 5 for a good ending. But it's 4/5, lack of competition becuase MC is just too OP HAHAHHA truly the son of heaven!

GUYS DONT WORRY, MC and ML's relationship are as equals, cause MC is not JUST an actor, you'll see ;) BTW, ML is such a simp HAHAHAH, even Mother said he spoils more than her! Ahh equals, just what I needed!!!

The MTL is readable. Only 10% is wonky :

  • He/her differences
  • MC's name Gong Xi Qiao will be father Xi Qiao for small moments.
I hate... more>> MTLs too, but this one is really readable trust me. If you know a lil Chinese, then you have no problem whatsoever too👌 <<less

I think this is more about taste, objectively it's a very good novel about a smooth progressing and sailing life of the MC. Everyone likes him, he becomes the nations treasure. There's still a few cannon fodder antagonists, but they were cleanly brushed away regardless of their schemed (either by the MC or the ML) -- technically, there's nothing wrong with this novel, but I have a preference for more vicious MC and more cruel pessimistic world, the netizens are a little too nice and the overall world seems to... more>> be evolved around the MC. He's a white moonlight, he's a handsome perfect male who can do anything and everyone who doesn't like him is wrong. Of course, this isnt stated, but it's what happens in the novel Lol

Which like, nothing's wrong with it!!! It's just a little too white lotus for me and not to my taste. I keep thinking about other MC novels of the same genre (showbiz) and how if they meet this MC they would definitely blow him out of the park.

He's good in the content of this novel, and you can definitely enjoy it if this is what you're after, but if youre not easily satisfied then perhaps this novel will be abit meh for you, which is kind of how it is for me...i can imagine forgetting this entire novel because nothing really stands out in like a week.

But it's a good novel if you're craving showbiz and needs something to munch on desperately. Lots of career development and while I find the romance abit laughable there's parts where I also think is sweet. <<less

I don't know where to start. I really like this novel. In fact, I didn't even notice how many days I've been reading and I was shocked once I saw [End of the text] in the MTL. Fortunately, there's an extra, or else I would really have a hard time pull out myself from this. And the extra did well, made my heart very satisfied. I appreciate many things in this novel. Like ML is an open fan if MC. MC's family, they are so adorbes! The complementary to MC... more>> to show MC's OPness is not overboard and is logical. Their relationship is a progress. There was an overview or detail about MC's last life, which is new for me based on the novels with entertainment rebirth themes I read. Some of the cannon fodderes have logical and kinda new reason to bully MC (lol who can bully him), there was not much detail about the plot of the movies/TV shows he filmed, the relationshipbetween MC and ML

is sweet and is not show-off, MC is not the only one who's matute, some passerbys or the assisstants, agent, bodyguard has enough EQ if not IQ,

I think I will re-read this once the translation is done.

Thanks for the author for giving birth to such a good story and also to the translator who did a good job tranlating this (I read the available translated chapters then MTLed the rest).

This was strangely enjoyable. I say strangely because I didn't think I would enjoy it as much in the beginning. I find that for some reason it feels like scenes end a bit abruptly, both in descriptions and characterization, so much so that I sometimes stopped to mentally question "wait, that's it?". I mostly got used to this and the story got more enjoyable as it went.

  • One thing I disliked, besides the slight strangeness at the beginning, was the fact that nearly every acting job MC's taken up to this point came with a new canon-fodder enemy. I will say all of them felt pretty one note; no notable characteristics, no real threat, no differences between each other either even though supposedly one was a film emperor, another was a 3rd rate, etc. They all dug their graves just like that and MC didn't really need to lift a finger to off them.
  • And this takes us to the second point: the OPness of the MC. The thing is, I find this OPness is the type that's enjoyable to read. I feel some of the characteristics of MC are by themselves pretty meaningless and they don't come up much at all and only exist to add to that overpowered all-rounder and high-class type he has going on.
    Spoiler

What's that? He plays the guqin, knows calligraphy and chess, all at pretty good level according to the era's standards even. What's the point of being a history major? I don't know, but it sure looks good on the resume. All things that feel like the background of the background of the background of the character, all things that I don't mind in this type of feel-good story apparently.

    [collapse]
  • Of the main characters: the MC himself is a pretty enjoyable person to follow. He's in my cup of tea of personality types, that is the exact opposite of overly dramatic, takes things as they come, enjoying life, while also being pretty vindictive from behind the scenes (this has been more of tell than show up to now though, because I still feel the "enemies" just offed themselves most of the time). The ML is also pretty nice.
    Spoiler

Probably better than the MC, honestly. I like that he has a reason for his initial interest on MC. I like that he didn't approach MC with romantic feelings in mind, and it's only in the latest translated chapters that he starts to question the nature of his feelings for MC, how they seem different compared to other people, how they make him think slightly different thoughts about MC. It's a slow burn of a relationship and I just like when there are unexpected cute scenes. Because even the cute scenes are somehow quiet in nature. It's not the general very obvious throwing of dog-food around. The author has even hinted about some fans shipping them and some side characters noticing a bit more, but there's no "loudness" about it.

    [collapse]
  • From the side characters I have three favorites.
    Spoiler

    1) Daddy Gongxi for breaking the mold and taking the role of the stereotypical Asian mom that likes to show off the son's achievements, being overall cute, and also apparently being the best cook in his house. 2) Xu Chao for being my spirit animal. 3) Zhao Yikun for being both easy and fun to bully.

    [collapse]
I'll say though that scenes where side characters get to shine are a bit lacking. There's only one or two moments where we can properly see their characteristics and after that it feels like more of a series of passing mentions. Female side characters are a bit of a rare breed. I feel like there's only been like four girls mentioned by name, the assistant and Mi Yue being the only ones I actually remember. The side characters are probably what suffers most from that strange descriptive/writing choice I mentioned in the beginning, because it feels like even if there is a scene involving them, it never goes to the finish line properly.
Still, this was a pretty enjoyable read. I hope the continuation is just as enjoyable.

Well its exactly what it says on the tin! No deceiving summary in here.

It is an entertaining read, nothing groundbreaking but its good representative of the no blood dog showbiz cn novels. I really liked the MC he is clearheaded but not a emotionless automaton, does not create drama but also do not lets himself be trampled on, confident on his capabilities but not a show off, high eq and even better the other characters are not all one dimensional canon fodder leaping like lemmings into the MC face slapping... more>> range. I really love that we are not awash in flashbacks or exposition of the MC past life (really did not feel like reading about yet another Tragic Past™ that has no bearing on the story I am currently reading), we are showed a glimpse of it by seeing the MC current personality, actions and his opinions of others.

The ML its just standard tall, dark, handsome, super rich and powerful ice block with the emotional depth of a spoon and obligatory Tragic Past™ that fixates on the MC for a flimsy reason but at least he is no r*pey (so far!) or pushy, so thats something. It is truly sad the bar its set so low that not being r*pey or an as*hole counts as a plus.

The relationship that truly shines its the one of MC with his parents, its so wholesome, loving, funny and the parents are sort of original!!! At least I havent seen one like this on cn novels. I wish the ML parts would have been replaced with the family. <<less

MC is a Gary Stu/ Mary Sue type but it works here, given his upbringing in his past life. This isn't a deep story with lots of angst but rather a feel good one with a moderate amount of face slapping and an MC who knows how to appreciate the good things he was handed this time around.

these were from my notes from when I MTL'd this back in July 2020:

Spoiler

Love this MC; smart, strong, clever, and no ones 'little fool.' he's an equal partner with the ML and they stand shoulder to shoulder (ML even mourns that there's not much he can help with). No misunderstandings between the two and MC was straight and to the point; lets hear it for two people actually talking to each other! Only thing I don't like is not knowing why he was reincarnated with his past memories, I don't think it's ever explained.

His reaction when people try to provoke him is to give them a big smile, which pisses them off. MC parents are very supportive of his career choice. ML is head of Xi family and he's only seen in passing a couple of times at the start. ML is another 'what is this thing you call love?' type with a cleansing habit so he's also "pure and never been in love" (as always). Trigger 10 chapters of him having no idea whats going on or why he feels the way he does, which, to be fair, is less than the usual 50 or so in other stories. Confession around c65.

MC is smart and doesn't pretend to be a blushing maiden. Reminds me of MC in Supermodel just a little bit. The ending was good. No one loses their IQ and the MC has very good EQ. The two are together around the halfway point and the story is solid. Hope it gets picked up.

A new favorite. The romance isn't official until like 3/4 into the story, but I can't even complain bc it was very natural. This is just a satisfying story of the MC's easy and casual journey to the top of the entertainment world. There's like 0 struggle, a bit of drama in the background, but MC and ML are able to handle it with no sweat. The parents are adorable and so caring for their son, and the MC didn't disappoint them either. A little sad that MC didn't share... more>> the truth about his past with the ML, but I can understand his intentions in trying to avoid bringing up that pain and struggle he experienced to the ML. There's a ton of dog food but I would have appreciated at least like 10 more chapters to see even more of their cuteness. <<less

MC has cute relationship with parents. The romance is also cute. Around chapter 30 my intention was to leave 4 stars, but then 0.2 stars were nipped due to three unnecessary paragraphs in Chapter 46 displaying internalised misogyny. A further 0.2 stars were also clipped away for promoting elitist mindsets a more fervently than is wont, even for the standard faceslapping novel. The author may have been writing on a tight schedule, but this sort of id is not fun to read.

Beyond that, an additional 0.5 stars were stripped for... more>> the heady PRC chauvinism in Chapters 48 to 50. While every writer has the right to be patriotic, I don't appreciate the way this one did it here. Even in a scenario where they have the admiration of foreigners, the author will feel uncomfortable if she cannot squeeze out some way for 'her own people' to look down on it. Foreigners who use principles of exchange no worse than what the 'Flower Country' industry locals take for granted in the rest of the book can still earn a slur. And, if China nationals truly feel that their delegates would be right to think and talk so rudely about others while in the very midst of being fêted as guests, then it is very hard to sympathise with their resentment over being internationally disliked.

Rounding off, it's 3 stars. The bulk of it is ok if you skip those few chapters, but it gets more boring in the second half, bogged down by inconsequential relationships and repetitive praises for MC the stu. The characters also become more prone to operatic declamations. I just got so darn bored that I had to stop 20 chapters shy of the ending. I'm a fan of the author's later works, but I won't be reading this one again. <<less

I have mixed feelings about this story. The current rating of 4.5 is definitely overrated according to me, but it also makes sense considering the quality of the tls. They are the absolute best. The translations are so smooth and well done that I ended up finishing this story out of respect for the translator even though I wanted to drop it so many times.

I personally love showbiz novels with transmigrated protagonists, especially when said protagonists are strong as well as capable. I don't mind overpowered protagonists either; in fact... more>> I quite like them. What I don't like, however, is when all the other details of the story are sidelined in favour of repeatedly praising the MC. This story has a hundred chapters including the extras, and I kid you not, it could've been finished within 50 or less chapters if the author hadn't decided to shove unnecessary praises for the MC.

I like my MC being appreciated, but not like this. It's especially irritating when the same descriptions are given again and again and again. Moreover, these descriptions pop up right in the middle of an important part and the immersion is all gone. They are also very unnecessary.

There are strong patriotic tones in the story, but unlike many other stories, this patriotism does not mean that other countries are being villified. I've read worse, and this form of patriotism where people just get emotional over their country getting some recognition in other places is kinda endearing.

I mainly gave this story 3 stars, because although I didn't like this story that had almost nothing in the way of plot, it did deliver what it said it would deliver, that is, a relaxing read (unless you find the over the top and repetitive descriptions of the mc's beauty irritating, which, unfortunately, I did). The translation was absolutely perfect. I'm just disappointed at the plot as well as the story is written. There was a lot of potential that could never be realised because the author decided to spend half the book piling praises on a mary sue protag who never encountered a single problem in his current life.

This story failed in making me feel any kind of emotion except irritation. The ML was cute but that's it. He's like a very sweet and almost invisible character who only exists to show how perfect Mc's life is. This is not a balanced story, at all. Considering how the ML was treated, I had no expectations for the other characters, and I'm glad for that.

All in all, didn't like this story but you might like it if you're looking for a mary sue protagonist who's the only focus of the story and if you particularly enjoy reading praises heaped on the MC at inopportune times then this story is definitely for you. Or you can read this if you have nothing else to read and you want good tls. <<less

What plot there is, isn't bad. Nothing ground breaking, but it's a light, warm, fluffy entertainment novel following the usual path.

I don't mind the patriotic overtones either. Authors from every other country is allowed to be patriotic, it's hypocrtical of people to consider it some kind of massive insult when Chinese authors are.

Unfortunately the plot is buried under massive, unending paragraphs praising MC over and over and over again for the same things, chapter after chapter. Like, I get it, he's OP, please move on.

Consequently it just got boring after... more>> a while. <<less

I've read the author's other novels too and if there's one thing I really love about it the most is how wholesome their family is T_T. We get too many books with very tragic family backgrounds, so to have a very supportive and funny family is really heartwarming.

Aside from that, I really love how the MC's character is just the right amount of innocent, level-headed, paying back slights without crossing the bottomline. Also, the ML's are really lovable T_T in a way that you know they need and deserved to... more>> be love the most, so for them to finally receive it and also give back mutually is so moving.
